That was a very nice comparison Jo and rounding the sharp points was not something I had thought of. I thought it was just me being a clutz as normal 🤣 I'll need to get a new set though as I need the pointy ones for my bookbinding.

One thing if I may ask, do you recommend a particular desktop die clicker? I’d like to get slightly more accurate cuts etc. also if you use cutters, can you recommend someone who makes custom ones?

Thank you for your video. I'm brand new to and setting up to do leather work. I just acquired some Starrett Machinist Dividers of varying lengths with sentimental value that I would like to use. When you say "rounded" would that be rounded comparable to say a ball point of an ink pen? Thanks in advance.
Probably not that wide but something similar yes, you don't want the dividers to 'scratch' the leather just leave a mark that you can follow with your knife/stitch markers. Hope that makes sense 👍
Can you explain why Osbourne wing dividers are nearly a hundred quid while you can get heavyweight precision engineers dividers for about twenty five pound.? Axminster tools have a fantastic variety at very reasonable prices
Most CSO wing dividers have forged legs, steel nuts and brass bushings whereas engineers dividers are made from plain steel with hardened points. Also CSO dividers have a fine adjustment screw on them so you use the bow leg to get you close to the measurement and use the fine adjustment to tweak it It costs less to make engineers dividers so, they sell for less. It's like asking why a Tandy swivel knife is $30 and a Barry King swivel knife is closer to $200. They both cut leather, right?
@@ffaubert1 I have forged dividers with brass fittings sold as engineers dividers they are very similar to osborne dividers but cost me the grand sum of £24.99 . I know that you are paying for the name with both osborne and Barry King but should that name really be worth three times the cost of the product.
@@markedis5902 lol you are not paying for the “name”. You are paying for a higher quality product. A good quality product is not for everyone though clearly. Some people don’t know how to appreciate it. Smoother mechanism. Forged legs, high end steel, rounded corners, well polished, well shaped and well put together, softer material (copper, brass, or soft steel) in between rivets and screws for durability and longevity. Etc.etc.etc.. all these details go over some people’s heads. Also the fact that they are made in America rather than China will add a bit to the price. Obviously the seller you are talking about is pricing them at close to 100 pounds because he had to pay import fees since they come from America. He is trying to recuperate. That being said I’ve seen a lot of sellers in America sell them for anywhere in between 60$ and 90$. One place I know of sells them for 40 USD. I don’t know how they do it but that is a steal of a deal.

Nothing goes over my head and I do definitely appreciate detail and good workmanship and materials. For example I have a skiving knife bought from Abbey England. To be honest it is one of the best skiving knives I have had in 35 years of leatherwork. The Osbourne equivalent is twice the price. Does that make it better? Or just a better known brand? Your patronising tone suggests to me that you are one of those people who automatically assume that mire expensive means better quality which is not always the case. It takes someone with experience to appreciate that with better known manufacturers it is their name that can command a higher price and they know this and spend a great deal on marketing to keep it that way.
@@markedis5902 lol the skiving knife CS Osborn is one of their cheapest tools and is sold by CS Osborn for about 10$. You are definitely overpaying wherever you got it at. It is a decent but very cheap tool made for people who want a tool at a lower price point. Sometimes, a certain name brand will guarantee a quality product while other times, you are really just paying for the name. Sometimes, it is a mix of both. You have never ones this particular product yet have decided you cheap dividers are just as good if not better. It absolutely it possible to get a good quality product for cheap, however, most of the time, you get what you pay for. I don’t think you realize how many steps go into producing high end tools as well as the very tight tolerances the tools are made at. On cheaper tools, the producers skip many of these and will also cheap out on materials, equipment, staff, protective equipment and safety. You also have the fact that a lot of Chinese/Asian made tools are made by underpaid, overworked people in workshops who are treated like animal. That is not the case in western or westernized countries. There is a lot more I could talk about but there is no point. I’m not here to change your mind anyways.
Using dividers to mark out a nice English point is my favourite trick!
