    We need a killer deck design Ed Wright. I know your working on it and your going to surprise me this GIE. I want a deck that puts Scag Monopoly on the cleanest cut to rest. Also my Ferris Mower provides a much cleaner cut than my Wright Stander. I know all that other stuff about transmission etc is important to you, but to us lawn guys it is all about the cut quality. IF I can mow a lawn in one pass and it looks great with no stragglers I'll buy which ever brand that can provide that.

    • @shawnkinney717
      @shawnkinney717 3 года назад

      I mow at 10mph and get zero stragglers. I use scag standard blades and have a 52 toro multiforce.

    Thanks for being civil & just true to the industry and not only your brand. It takes a lot of guts to do what you did. I love how you said, some times, they will have something better than us, but wait for our response in the future. It’s not about bringing other down it’s about us all doing well!!!

    I'm a former Ferris employee. I graduated from the village where they are built and we saw the change from when the Ferris family got out and Briggs took over. Pay, and moral went down. They began building mowers because dairy industry was going down. Ferris-Ubler built milking machines and hydrostatic feed carts.... It was cool working in a former school building but working for a multi national corporation sinks!
    Ferris was the first company, as per my memory, to offer hydrostatic wb mowers because of their experience with hydro in agriculture.
    BTW this former Ferris employee will buy a Write walk behind 48 gear drive as soon as I can:-) I will be able to drive it right onto my truck and not be too heavy.
    From one family business to another keep up the good work

    Thank you, Ed, for helping me choose the right mower after a blown engine at 1550 hrs. even though with regular maintenance ( Kohler ZT710-E ) because they use plastic components in the camshaft. I moved on after 3 Wright mowers over the years to the SRS Z1 36" ( 23 Vanguard) this year from the Stander I 36" which I sold for $3100.00 after four years used after repairs. One of the biggest issues I had is that it does not cut well, and the fact that the weight of deck along with the engine causes the push rod that attaches to the deck to loosen making the whole thing shake like crazy and that was on a 36" I imagine what it does on bigger mowers.

    Love my Ferris Z2, cuts great, stripes great, built like a tank, awesome on hills and very comfortable to ride with tons of power. I always do a lot of research before purchasing any product and I have never heard of anyone wearing out the deck of a Ferris mower? thanks for the comparison, I believe from my research and experience as a landscaper that bang for buck that Ferris is the best mower out there.

    • @davidvasquez3564
      @davidvasquez3564 5 лет назад

      I totally agree 100% the Ferris is a better built, notice that Ferris is second to compared with Wright mower he's afraid of the competition, these mower are well designed. I know I had several Wright over the years nothing but break down before I switch to Ferris. Ever since they switch deck to the oreo deck it went downhill a lot clumping or cow paddy you can even put a mulching kit is even worse.

    New guy here in the business starting out part-time with a push mower and a few yards but looking to expand and will be marketing heavy soon. Have the cash now to buy a used pickup, enclosed trailer and all the needed tools to be considered a serious business. I have been looking at getting quotes on everything from gear drive and hydro walk behind, zero turns and now looking at stand on. I keep coming back to the wright stander and leaning towards the 32". Most of the residential yards in broward county fl have small 36" back yard gates so I think I will be pulling the trigger on a new one next week.

    I am now looking for a New Stand On Mower, to replace my current 4 year old eXmark VTS730EKC52400 with 260 hours / only because it is out of warranty. My quick background: I owned a profitable equipment dealership for 26 years ( 2 years old, I sold the dealership with no regrets because I am only 55yr and can relax for while ). In 2018, my dealership sold only: Kubota, eXmark, Gravely, and Stihl ( also we sold John Deere, Scag, Toro, Ramsome Bobcat, Dixie Chopper, Snapper and Grasshopper during the past 26 years ). NOTE: When, I owned the dealership, I would purchase a new mower every few years ( as my test mower for the dealership ) then I would sell it as a used mower after the warranty ended, so everyone team member at my dealership always had a hands on viewpoint; from parts, service, and sales items / thus the customers trusted our input. Now, I can purchase any mower; so, I am looking at the Wright Stander because they ONLY have a true floating deck in which the: Engine Motor and the Drive Motors also drop down with the Deck to " Create A True Belt Tension TO MAINTAIN ALL POWER... From the Marine... I say: OH YEA !

    Cutting all tall grasses, the Wright, and perhaps all these designs, are fine. It's when you have to move from 4" to 1.5" in the same day that you run into snags. You want that deck to float over the undulations in turf, and anti-scalps to keep those ends from gouging in the short turf. Heavy thick decks tend to just plow through to the soil and gouge.

    Ed- You guys need a speed control like the Ferris. With that mechanism we could set our cutting speed and pin the handles to track straight as an arrow. Right now if I pin the handles its too fast. Also, some accessories like a perfect ACDC, deck elevator , receiver in the front, side holder for the cell phone... stuff like that...

      forgot the mention I also tried a 48 inch stander intensity and was very impressed with the cut quality and discharge. The 61 ZK was very disappointing. Now I have switched to Toro do to cut quality Issues with mohawking in between the blades as the scag deck aged and also the Turbo force cuts the best out of everything I've ever used.

    I still own a 60” Great Dane mower & I came across them when I worked for a guy as he had the 48”& a 60” both of em were stand on mowers & this was about 20 years ago .
    Once ya learn how to safely and properly use a stand on mower they outperform sit down mowers but I’m not a fan on using for very large business properties as we had em when we mowed a chain of grocery stores of which many of had acreage .
    Your feet become very tired in em as they are doing all of the work to keep ya on em . So for that my goal is to run a sit down 60” and maybe a 72” mower and the 48 “ & 36” will all be stand on mowers .

      First Dew, This is something we are always tweaking. We own a bunch of competitor mowers and test against them all the time and so we have a pretty good sense of where we stand. One of the struggles is that some conditions need a more "open" type deck and others need a "tight" deck. Every deck has it's favorite conditions and we believe we do better than a lot of deck in many situations. We believe that there is always room to push the bar higher and we are always working on things we can do to raise it. I would encourage you to demo before you buy and make your own conclusions on they types and height grass you cut. -Ed

    There is no question that Wright Mfg. makes a great mower, I bought my first one in 2008 when no-one else had Stand-ons in Raleigh, NC. Unfortunately, that's where the it stopped with me and my Wright relationship. My local dealer was a clown and when I needed spindles (under warranty) or anything else I was hosed and had to pay out of pocket. I complained to Wright where it fell on deaf ears and I felt kicked when I was down, as I was in college (Turfgrass Science B.S.) and every dollar meant it. Now I've grown my business to a few crews and have high-profile properties in Raleigh, we run 5 Toro Grandstand (two 60" EFI, two 52", and one 40") with ZERO issues and put 800hrs per year on them. I demoed the 72" ZK as we needed a 72" but again the other Wright dealer in town, not a fan of. Ended up with the 72" Ferris Z3X... We'll see how it goes! Btw I bought the 72" Z3X for $7,500 NEW (Unheard of price!)

    Nice video Ed. As you explained the advantage of Wright mowers having the Engine go down with the deck, keeping the belt perfectly aligned, I believe you forgot to mention that a key advantage is that we achieve a lower center of gravity from the accumulated weight of the engine, Pumps, engine deck, and anything else that goes down with it. I have owned a Stander 52 RH for the past 4 years. I have over 500 hours on the machine and, mechanically, it works great. However, the deck has proven to be a real clog-o-matic. After mowing (I never mow in the wet) I spend at least 30 minutes under the machine cleaning out the stuck on grass. I wonder if anyone at Wright has ever heard of carriage-head bolts? I have now replaced all the under-deck bolts because they were the major culprits in causing grass build-up under the deck. I also had to polish all the welds under the deck - for the same reason. For a machine that costs over 9 grand - I feel the under deck build quality is pretty shabby.
    Having said that, it does a nice job of mowing in all conditions and I have had zero mechanical issues - and I am not inclined to baby the machine. I just hate the way the deck clogs up.

    As a landscape contractor and owner of multiple stand on mowers i.e. the stander x, scag v-ride and a hustler stand on all 61" decks. I can tell you hustler is the way to go. They are built like a tank ( which is good because employees dont care about equipment) it also has the best cut and bagging and is very comfortable to be on all day.
    The cut on the stander x was terrible. Slow blade speed, left hairs and clumps everywhere, Even on dry grass. Couldnt get a full bag. Now its just a back up mower. Not sure if they fixed the problem.
    The scag has a very good cut but wont fill a bagger. it also feels like your swinging a piece of plywood in front of you, way too long of a machine.
    Never used a ferris but hear they are pretty good.
    If your looking at a new machine try a demo first. Each operator has their own likes. Just my 2 cents.

      I agree on the DEMO comment. Many folks who demo a Hustler won't buy it. Also, look underneath at the pumps and belt drive--too many finicky things to go wrong. One pump fails and both have to be replaced.

      Hustler has one of the best warranties so i wouldn't worry about the pumps. If the mower doesn't cut well your wasting time and money. I take pride in what my lawns look like, thats why we retain 98% of our customers. The aero core deck cuts like crap. Time to re-re-engineer the deck and fix its flaws.

    My first wide cut mower was a gravely 34inch belt drive. My second mower a wright 32inch cut love it. The bad part a wright rep said he would bring it to me a 4 hour drive. I was told a day and time he did not show up after waiting 2 weeks I drove there to get it. Keep in mind it was already paid for. This is where I had bought both mowers. Do you think I would go back there hummm NO ! I will find another dealer not sure which brand to buy. I love the wright but the rep has pushed me away. I try to keep an open mind and you and I know a bad rep will not make you money. The funny part the place I bought the mower said there sales have slowed down wonder why ?

    I have a part time lawn service and have decided to finally bite the bullet and invest in a stand on. The closest i can buy a Wright is an hour and half away, but i can get Skag, Toro, or Ferris 35 minutes away, and they want my business and actually care. The Wright is 1200 more than the Skag and 900 more than Ferris. I also have a local Exmark and John Deer dealer but the service level and attitudes of the sales staff turn me off. This is a big investment for me to justify and i want to make the best decision. HELP!!!

    I demoed a wright 2 years ago. I had it for a day and put about 4 hrs on it. It was dry and I had to cut everything twice and still left grass. My dealer who was thinking about picking them up did not believe me. He came out and saw it for himself. We took it out to some 3ft high grass, missed 90% of everything. He took it out to his house after it rained and the grass stuck so bad it clogged up the deck and broke the belt. The only time it cut well was perfect grass in perfect conditions. I loved everything about the machine but the deck was completely unacceptable. PACE took it back and said they were going to look into it. Never heard anything more back. I will be buying a z2 this summer. The build quality on the wright is better, but the z2 handles about the same and the cut is wayyyyy better and a better price point.

    • @brianmottice3892

      I have 3 52" stander X mowers and love the way the grass cuts after one pass. At first I had a similar experience with bad cut quality when I demoed the wright x and zk. I took a chance that I could solve the problem because the machine fit my needs. I had to increase the pitch of the deck and get rid of the factory blades. I run high lift blades and had to add two spacers under the deck so the top of the blades clear the top of the deck and the discharge baffle. The out of the box cut is terrible on cool season grasses, leaves behind many uncut blades of grass due to lack of lift. On another note I feel there is a need for a compact vac collection system for grass and light leaves. I use rackem catchers with extenders for grass collection. it works great for collecting but the weight of wet grass makes the deck tip up on the opposite side causing uneven cut and wear on the deck bushings. If you could design a twin bagging system and or dump from the platform catcher/vac the machine would have no competition from a sit down machine that offers collecting. Do you see a possibility of producing something like this for your machines? Thanks

    • @JCLawn51
      @JCLawn51 7 лет назад +1

      Brian Mottice Trac vac makes a system using 50 gal trash bin as the hopper. All you need to do is hang the bin in the front of the machine and you will be in business, but you will eat dust.

    Marketing 101!!! NEVER mention your competitor as you just gave them then a window for comparison. Proud Z2 owner after the fact!

    • @audioandrew13
      @audioandrew13 6 лет назад

      If your product is better, why not mention your competitor? And even if not better, just different, I can respect that they are showing the options. These days, being a trusted source of information is a critical part of marketing. If Wright is confident enough in their product to make those comparisons, that means a lot. And the style of this video isn't "look how bad these are, buy a Wright!" Ed is just sharing information, and that information points people toward the mower that is "Wright" for them.
      PS--I do not own a Wright mower, but I have owned a Ferris (zero turn) and it was a great mower. I am going to buy a Deere QuikTrak mower today, which I understand is designed by Wright.

      @@WrightMowers As a Millennial, I hate dealers. There has got to be a better way, as I stated in another post here, my local Wright dealers were terrible and screwed me over with your machine. I hate paying their light bill and the distributors million dollar warehouse rent. That is really why these mowers are selling for 10k+. Don't blame that on taxes! So Wright makes a profit (I'm cool with everyone making $), then the distributor makes a cut (no bueno), then the dealer makes $1000ish per mower (and the complain that they have to buy so many from Wright to get a good rebate). Oh then add on financing- add 3% to Sheffield for the "0% Financing"!!! This is more complicated than a car dealership!

Briggs and Stratton also owns: Ferris, Snapper, Simplicity, and a few other brands...
