    I remember paying 60 dollars for a Morgan Jazz 5 when a Meyer was 40, Oh the pain that 20 bucks added. Pure magic when you get the right one. Played different facings but never played anything else. Still strapping reeds down with a Harrison H. My poison was reeds, to the wife, "they're a tax right off babe". So happy to have found your channel.

    Watching this video was like a trip down memory lane for me! I have tried almost every one of those pieces myself. But I certainly did not buy them all! Along the way, I have given away some of my clean, undamaged mouthpieces to my students.

    wow! that's a lot of pieces! I've only played a few over the years: a Brilhardt Level Air, Dukoff & a modified Link (w/baffle) which I used exclusively for 35 years! I recently got a D'Addario DM7. In high school I had a Selmer S-80 C** (they were new then). These were all on Tenor btw.

    • @Osnosis
      @Osnosis 3 года назад

      Good choices! I use the Level Air on my alto (can scream like Sanborn, but can be sweetened towards a mellow jazz tone). The D’Addario is an excellent piece (tenor), too. I settled on an Arnold Montgomery ANKH 7 (for big band blending) and a custom SYOS for solo work. Still love a Lamberson SB and Francois Louis Spectruoso 285.

    I bought the $30 Yibuy mouthpiece with no expectation except maybe to use it as a pretty paperweight. You are right about the plating: it's terrible. But so what. Unlike you, though, the sound is just right for me-with a moderate baffle and medium chamber, it sound just right rom top to bottom, and it's easier to play reliably in tune that my HR Bergs and Link STM. Go figure. Thank you, however, for your expertise; I have learned so much from you.

    Great to hear your impressions of different pieces as its hard to know what you are looking for without trying them yourself. Everybody's different and has different needs out of their mouthpieces. Videos like this give you a place to start. Have you ever played on Lawton or Macsax pieces? I bought a Macsax piece for $100 a couple years ago and it plays lights out, though the tip opening is a bit open for me. From watching this video, you said you could narrow the tip opening, didn't know that could be done. As always, great video and Happy New Year!

In fact, I decided to try it on alto and ended up switching from a Rico C5 on alto to an M5 because I found it to be a better match for me on alto. I have two older Eugene Rousseau mouthpieces, a 4R for my alto which I find is resistant for the tip opening and doesn't play well and a Studio Jazz SJ6 that came with my Conn-Selmer Avant DSS-200 soprano which I like and I am thinking of getting a new Studio Jazz SJ5 made by Jody Espina to see if it feels and or play any better than my current one as his mouthpieces are always well made and consistent.

    I LOVE my rico graphtonite C7 on my clarinet for jazz. Very very hard to find a clarinet mouthpiece with a rollover/circular style baffle like on the C7. Everyone should own one in case they quit making them...I actually like it more than the Vandoren JB5 clarinet jazz mouthpiece.

    It baffles me, no pun intended, how players can switch between mouthpieces on the spot and play them effortlessly. It takes me more than a week working with another mouthpiece before my embeshure gets accustomed to a new mouthpiece I play on a Runyon. I have an Otto, Berg, Dukoff, Brillhart, and have played them all at one time or another. But when I try to go back and play any one of those another ones, forget about it. Being accustomed to the Runyon I feel a foreign object in my mouth that responds poorly and sounds horrible, and what was a good reed on my Runyon sounds horrible on the others, so now i gotta mess with reeds. Sadly, I cannot just walk into a store and test play a new mouthpiece. I've got to work with it for quite some time to know whether or not it works for me.
    I envy you guys!

    • @Sirvalorsax
      @Sirvalorsax  2 года назад

      I've listened to many different sax players with all manor of different approaches to sound and I've transcribed many of them. When I play a new mouthpiece, I can hear a little bit of someone in there. I use that as a guide post for how to sound good on any mouthpiece. The thing with that technique is this, you need to listen to the people whose sound you don't like also.

    Hi Mr. Spencer.. You certainly have a large collection of mouthpieces and your reviews are always excellent However, if i may suggest especially during these times ,,,and after listening to our new president that you focus on reviewing / promoting not only mouthpieces but other woodwind accessories that are "MADE IN AMERICA" . Our economy is in dire straits and aiding the import of more Chinese products in my humble opinion just not right . I wonder if any of your other subscribers agree or disagree.. God Bless ..

    • @Sirvalorsax
      @Sirvalorsax  3 года назад +3

      I am one of the only people that buy these products with his own money instead of getting stuff for free to make these videos. I had the mouthpiece plated by an American company (Anderson Silver Plating) which costs 6 times the price of the mouthpiece itself and I encourage people to do the same.. Many American companies get products from China and sell it to us at crazy marked up prices like the $200 Nike shoes that I have on. My reviews are objective and I don't pick a side based on what nation made the product. It just comes down to price and quality. I have spoken fairly about the quality issues of this mouthpiece and even took down the first review I did of the mouthpiece where I talked about those exact issues. I think people should be more concerned about all the reviews that people do that are clearly designed to impress the manufacturer instead of informing the consumer.
