The T5 sounds nice and lush. T6 sounds nice and fat with some brightness and projection. Your ability to play so fast and consistent is incredible. Great review bro.

Back in the 1980s, I was studying sax and working in a machine shop at night. I brought in my Otto Link and used it as a model. I made one out of brass stock on a lathe and milling machine, and it came out pretty darn good. I made the chamber a bit bigger than the Link, and it projected nicely. Still have it sitting in my room, reminding me of those days.

I use a T7 Vandoren with a 2.25 Leger Sig reed, and find that great gutsy sound.. Think they are a fine mp, especially for the price. Taken me over 50 years to find this.

T 5 seems to play/sound like a 5# Link from the eighties .Nothing wrong with that at all .

I have a Modern Vintage Otto Link vs Vandoren T5 "40's" comparison coming soon.
Both sound really nice but I favor the T5. I like the darker, fuller tone. I think both are good to have for different situations, although to my ear both had plenty projection, I’m sure the T6 cuts through more when you need it to?
I'm still surprised by how different they are. Not just a chamber resizing.
Yeah, I like a spread sound as well, in certain situations. I like a focused sound in others. I have found that even with a mic there is a huge difference between a high baffle, small chamber mouthpiece and a low baffle large chamber piece, mainly the amplified focused sound Vs. the amplified softer spread. I always play in situations where I use a mic, but there is a point where I need that focused projection that allows me to cut through.

I liked more the small chamber...a good balance with the tenor sound...opens a little bit,give a little shine to the sound....it is a taste metter...anyway,the player makes all...nice chops Man:)

Hi Sir Valorsax, what low resistance mouthpiece would you recommend? I tried Ottolinks and Berg Larssen, but man the resistance on them! I have an ebonite Jupiter 4C now. I prefer the bright sound of the small mouthpiece in this vid. Thanks in advance!
I have t 6 and t 7 small chamber I went to Sam ash and play tested the 6* Otto link and t 7 both metal They were some variations and differences between them but I like the T7 better
Was it the Vintage Link or the regular one?
In your experience, what setup that you’ve tried out allowed you to produce the deepest darkest sound?
Usually the stiffest reed with a mouthpiece that has thick side rails. You run the risk of it being SUPER HARD to play with all the resistance though. For my reviews, I've found that the Selmer Soloist and the Russeau JDX 5 are the darkest.

Every mouthpiece will be the correct one for the venue. Therefore owning and using different mouthpieces
is a very good idea. Also recording situations can call for a change. Johnny Griffin told me that Jaws
recorded on a 5*Link but live use a 9 Link.
Interesting, I prefer smaller tip opening myself. Its hard to get around the acoustic limitations though

Great channel - I’m wondering how much the different chamber sizes affect intonation. ie if you change the volume of the part that is ?ideally supposed to exactly match what would be the volume of the cone if the cone continued to a theoretical point - surely this messes with the saxophones tuning??
Good point. I thought that one would just have a larger chamber than the other but one is skinnier and longer also. Also the baffle is a little different.
Hello my good sir. Its me again. Im still confused whether to get the v16 T6 medium chamber to replace my metalite m7. Btw, is it really worth it to upgrade from the metalite to the v16 considering the price of 250 usd for the v16 inclusive of an optimum lig. Thanks sir! I hope you would notice this. 😊

Incredible! Hi, I'm just starting back trying re-build an embouchure after 20 + years -- mind you, I'm originally a clarinetist. I want to purchase a new mouthpiece soon...rubber or metal. The Kohlert tenor I purchased a few years ago came with a stock, plastic mouthpiece. I LOVE a bright, brittle sound like yours, a Gato, the late Steve Grossman, as well as a Bob Berg. I guess my question is: should I opt for the hard-rubber (while re-building my embouchure), or go ahead and give a metal a shot? I do have an old Dukoff metal I purchase over 30 years ago (whom, actually greeted me, and sold me the mouthpiece himself, btw...), but, at the time, I had ABSOLUTELY no concern for the science of the mouthpiece-- basically, I didn't know what I was doing when purchasing it (and I was just making the transfer from clarinet to tenor). In fact, I can barely get a sound out of the Dukoff metal, til this day . Say, dude...LOVE your videos, most of all your playing! You have no idea how much you've inspired me to pull my ax back out. Respond at your convenience. Peace...
I would advise you to start with the Rico Metalite plastic mouthpieces. They are a cheap way to get back in the game while you are figuring out what you want. Modern mouthpiece manufacturing is INCREDIBLE nowadays and they can make any material mouthpiece sound bright or dark. The quality of the sound will differ with materials but if you are restarting, start inexpensively! I have quite a few vids on this piece:

Watch youtube vids on mouthpieces that you like where people are playing them in the style that you like to give you a better idea of what will work best. Modern mouthpieces can cost a fortune and vintage ones are even more expensive. Believe me when I say this, buying a really expensive piece that you don't like and can't return is a DRAG!!!!

Great review Adriene, I like how you sound on both of these pieces, they’re great generally, but like you I have a soft spot for that small chamber.
They sound very similar with a very subtle difference in the attack and EQ. The sound of the Large chamber sounds a little more resistant with a little more emphasis on lows. The T6 sounds more punchy.
I’d be interested to see you blow on a SYOS piece. Curious to know your take on them. I’d even be interested to see the colour combination you’d pick. :D

Yeah when I mentioned SYOS I meant custom, not artist. Don’t see much point going for it if you dont go custom, unless you really love an artist model or are squeezed for the extra $100 bucks it costs.
We all know it always comes out of your pocket when you review these pieces so take your time and we’ll be waiting (impatiently ;))
I enjoy all your videos. I saw your video on the Gary Sugal KWIII and the Berg Larsen. Which one do you think is the best out the three (Vandoren metal small chamber t-6, Sugal KW III or the Berg)?
The Berg is definitely the most balanced and neutral. The others are catered to a very specific type of sound

I would never buy a Sugal. The guy is a crook. I heard Kirk Whalum split with him for that reason.

Physics question: why would the large chamber mouthpiece also be shorter? I'd think with a larger chamber you'd push in more, so you'd want the piece to be longer to compensate. Do you notice any difference in the intonation tendencies of the two mouthpieces?
Good question. I think they were going for a 1940's style with the large chamber. Perhaps the mouthpiece they modeled it after was shorter

I like the small chamber sound better....i had a Link when i was a kid and sold it for $80. That was back in '75...when U play thru a sound system...none of these nuances matter very much...it matters alot when ur playing acoustically tho..
I totally agree with you except that there is a sound/feel that I'm listening for when I play. I try to get people to understand why they would buy a super open tip mouthpiece to cut through drums, electric guitar amps, and wanna be Maynard Furguson trumpet players when they will just turn their volume up and play even louder when they hear you playing louder. Seems like an expensive pointless endeavor to me
@@Sirvalorsax true...thats one reason why i dont play in bands anymore...i use back tracks coz i can control the volume...im an older guy and have hearing problems coz guitar players and drummers and the rest blew out my eardrums coz they like to play loud..peace and keep playing great!

Can you tell me where the v16 t45 falls? Which is it closest to in brightness, lower register, and the "scream" in the upper register? (I don't know what to call the scream, but I like it on the smaller chamber much better.)
The small chamber is the more modern sounding one with the large chamber being a more vintage oriented piece. The small chamber favors the altissimo and the large chamber favors the low end

Go with the big bore for a more free blowing mouthpiece

Your demonstrations in performance are the BEST I've heard on RUclips and I'm pretty sure that you've influenced some people to go out & purchase these products.
These are great tutorials on saxophone mouthpieces, which makes one (or should) want to study more about mouthpieces.

If the mouthpiece is longer, does that affect the tuning? For example, will a longer mouthpiece keep an older horn like a Conn in tune?
There is a relationship between mouthpiece length and chamber size that does affect intonation

Try some softer reeds. That is a good start.

Vandoren ZZ
The ZZs run a bit stiff in my opinion. I would recommend Greenbox #2 or Redbox #2 for beginners if Vandoren is your preference. I use La Voz mediums on my soprano because they are softer overall

On my V16 t6 i find I’m always super sharp and i was wondering if that has something to do with my how embouchure and when playing on a jazz mouthpiece i need to be more relaxed, but still don’t know. but even when i pull it out all the way i still am consistently sharp, any tips? Thanks!
I would work on adopting a new embouchure. I use a lip out embouchure which allows for much less pressure on the mouthpiece overall. This will eventually help you to develop more control because you are not wasting energy gripping the mouthpiece.

Sirvalorsax i figured out that just the reeds i was using were not very good with this mouthpiece but moved to some vandoren 2.5d and it works great!

@@Sirvalorsax Thanks for pointing this out (the lip out embouchure).I was using an embouchure that was really more suitable for soprano sax, but on tenor. Upon reading this comment the other day, I tried the lip out method and found I had much more control, even with a tip opening that I had some struggles with before.

Yes! But inherent design matters most. I have very low tip opening classical mouthpieces that are very resistant

Do you repair your own horn, since on the ship you cannot really get on and off and get to a repair shop? I met you at the Horn Section Shop here in Melbourne, FL. Holler at me I got new horns and a set up guy here. I've slowed down my cruise work because of my new daughter.
Congrats on the baby girl!!! I'll be close enough to a repair shop soon but mostly It is wise to stock up on rubber bands and duck tape before I head out. LOL. I'll keep you in mind if I'm in the area

I was looking into one of the Drake pieces for a more contemporary smooth jazz type of sound but I couldn't specify the one that I was looking for. There is a shop in Ohio that I'll visit next time I'm there that carries them so I'll be able to narrow that search. Thanks

Is there any specific mouthpiece for a classical player wanting to approach a jazz setting, I know the answer is prolly just any good jazz mouthpiece and practice on it but want to ask anyway
The Vandoren T35 is an interesting hybrid. I would always recommend a regular Otto Link (super tone master) or a Vandoren V16. They are super affordable and lots of people play on them. Also the Rico Metalite are a nice cheap way in. Thanks for watching.

Vandoren Redbox 2.5. I do work on my reeds but I generally don't have to do a whole lot to get them to play well.
