    We are racing to complete our chimney pipe and our window wall so we can return our boom lift. The boom lift is costing us more money everyday we have it, but we just don't feel confident enough yet to tackle our big windows that are high up, so we focus on our lower windows for now. It may seem like we're procrastinating, but this task feels overwhelming.
    Fortunately, in this episode, we are able to complete our chimney pipe so we can ALMOST cross that task off the to-do list. We just need to add it's supports and it is complete.
    And now a little back story on us, in case you just found us on RUclips. We’re Sara and Ryan. We are your average suburban family, but 9 years ago, we purchased a raw piece of land in the Hood Canal in Washington. We’ve been developing this piece of property slowly, and this year we knew it was time to go all in. So we purchased a log cabin kit home and decided that 2020 would be the year we built a house on our property. We plan to build this cabin (as much as we can) on our own.
    Unfortunately, COVID-19 put a delay on our cabin kit being produced and delivered in the time frame we had originally planned. While we could have just waited it out and pushed back starting on the build of our home, we decided to shift gears and change our course for the time being. We purchased a 30 foot yurt, and will be setting it up as additional living space when we begin to build our cabin.
    In the summer of 2021, we FINALLY moved to the Hood Canal so we could start the build of our future home. While we are building our home, we are living in a camper trailer and the yurt that we built in the summer of 2020. We hope to have our cabin kit home built by the summer of 2022. Just my husband and I are building the house. We get help here and there from friends along the way and we do plan to get help on the roof but other than that we are doing it all on our own.
    Follow along with us as we build our dream in the Hood Canal.

    You need to install your storm collar before you put the cowl on and the stabilising brackets or you'll be dismantling your chimney again guys, great job by the way so far.

      We still have one 2 foot section of pipe to put on, so the storm collar is still to go on. Our storm collar clips around the outside instead of slipping over the top, so it can go on at anytime.

    Soul deep satisfaction I think is the word you are looking for. I often marvel at what I've accomplished in building my own place. I still hate and shake when I have to climb up on the roof (3 stories) but I haven't died yet :) House is looking fantastic. I hope you have people that will help put in the prow windows. That will be so dangerous.

      I'm looking into it as more than one person has mentioned the diverter. We generally don't get more that 6' of snow accumulation here so we didn't think it was necessary, but this winter we got over 18" so it probably is something that is wise for the long term.

    Be warned, your log wall height will shrink 1-3% over time. This has to be taken into account of your window side frame hight. Leave a gap !
    I would recommend mounting windows slightly high. And alsow cutting the left and right side frame 3-5/100 of your frame hight. 3-5%..
    Leaving a gap at bottom. ( leaving gap at top will force your screws to snapp as it sags down..)

    PLEASE Look !!! Hey the zip tape, you do not need to cut the corners on the windows, it will stretch around the corner. I have seen it on other channels doing it that way. I would think you could stretch to fit the profile of the logs too. I dont know about the wood windows, if you could take the glass out so it is lighter when installing. Keep up the good work building your own home. I built mine 6 years ago.

    • @OneFootOfftheGrid
      @OneFootOfftheGrid  2 года назад

      There are two types of Zip tape. There is the “stretch” version and then the regular that we used. The stretch kind doesn’t need to be cut, but the kind we used i researched heavily beforehand and it was how everyone showed building sills.

      We don’t traditionally get more that 2-3” of now accumulation in our area. This winter we did see over 2’ though and I manually cleared the roof so it might not be a bad precaution to put in place.

      @@OneFootOfftheGrid Key words don't traditionally..... the day very well might arrive when installing a diverter is necessary because you got some "non-traditional" snow fall and your pipe is either bent or uprooted from the roof. Well the way that I think is one must improvise and use what one has. And if I don't have a j roller I use a piece of PVC pipe it works just the same as long as it gets the job done. If I don't have a hammer handy I use a rock to drive a nail. And for a lot of people that believe that you have to have the exact proper tool to use and if they don't have that exact proper tool to use oh boy what am I going to do well I'm going to have to put this job off until I get the proper tool to use and that's why those people never gets anything done because they don't want to improvise. And for those people who improvise because they don't have the exact proper tool at hand well they always get the job done. So I say use what you got on hand to use so you can move on to the next part of the job and provides and you will be surprised at what you can accomplish.
