    That lift you guys used is awesome, I used when my wife and I built our garage. I lifted 38' trusses onto 12' walls, it went flawlessly. I even used it to get the shingles onto the roof. What a back saver!

      I was super impressed by that piece of equipment. So much so that we decided to rent a second one to raise our large beam in the great room.
      But, you’ll have to wait till next Sunday for that excitement.

    Hiring a crane sounded like a good idea! The way you did it right on the limits took some courage!

    • @OneFootOfftheGrid
      @OneFootOfftheGrid  2 года назад

      This beam was not near the limits. We were discussing how to raise the next bigger beam which would have been close to the weight and height limits for a single lift.
      As we mentioned in the video, we think we will rent a second lift.

      We have them stay off the build site when we’re doing anything that’s dangerous. So they were both hanging out in the yard or a probably off playing somewhere.

  • @george8873
    @george8873 2 года назад +1

    I think using 2 lifts on the big beam is the safest thing you can do to get the beam up in the air. It'll be more stable, and you will have more control over it.

    • @OneFootOfftheGrid
      @OneFootOfftheGrid  2 года назад +1

      Thanks George. This is the solution we finally arrived on as well. Apart from using a crane it’s the safest and gives the most control. Thanks for sharing your perspective

  • @ACO-Amy
    @ACO-Amy 2 года назад +1

    Might be a silly question, but why didn't you just use the man lift to place the beam up there? Weight capacity?
    Awesome job guys! 👏

    • @OneFootOfftheGrid
      @OneFootOfftheGrid  2 года назад +1

      Good question. The weight capacity of the loft was only 500 lbs and more importantly that is not what it’s designed use is. Plus, the arm would of had to of been fully extended to reach the center of the house which we worried would have been a tipping hazard.
      The operation of the lift was just way too jerky for us to feel comfortable. I think we did it in the safest way possible with the equipment we had available.

    • @OneFootOfftheGrid
      @OneFootOfftheGrid  2 года назад

      Good question. We aren't intentionally backdating but we are pretty far behind on our publishing/editing schedule. We are fairly new our weekly publishing schedule so trying to figure out the balance between editing/publishing and working on the build.
      We are planning to catch up over the holidays to get closer to what is happening in realtime.
      Oh those dog days of summer when you could work in a tanktop, but man did we have some HOT days over the summer.

    WHY NOT USE TWO OF THE BLUE LIFTS

    • @OneFootOfftheGrid
      @OneFootOfftheGrid  2 года назад +1

      Number one it would be cost prohibitive. Number two man lives aren’t designed for lifting beams.
      We could’ve rented a Gradall but again the cost compared to use in the material left was significant.
      Thanks for watching!

    • @OneFootOfftheGrid

      Can you rent a mini? I kept going back and forth. The beams seemed too small for a crane but too big for the material lifts. We got it done though.

    Generally speaking I really enjoy this channel, but this lift was so unsafe I almost stopped watching. And I don't mean unsafe in a fun, wow, that took some courage way. I mean in just a plan unsafe, bad idea, do not do this way

    • @OneFootOfftheGrid
      @OneFootOfftheGrid  Год назад

      Hey Dan. It sure was a scary project but in the moment we never felt anything but secure and safe. We were well within the lifting limits of the equipment, but honestly if we had to do it again I might consider calling in a crane. Hopefully you’ll continue watching our channel.
