Good news. Wales is a transport wilderness outside of Cardiff and its environs. Govt then throws more money at it when the people of Cardiff do not need or want it. We need an all Wales transport strategy. Not just in the SE.
However as Network Rail own the rails outside of the Valleys and Bay, all that is called by Westminster. There is a lot of work to do but integrated fares, timetables and bus operation would be a good start.
Was in Cardiff bay nearly two weeks ago and first visit for a year. Really surprised with the work thats been carried out so far.
Likewise. I was down last week and it is all coming along. Be good when it is finished.
it would have been nice to have a new station at Florish it would have cut the walk to the milenum centre
Thanks for the update Bob, look forward to that coffee one day 😉
Great video, thanks Bob! 👍🏻😀
My pleasure. Bit of a spur of the moment one.
A bit disappointed really that the line will remain in its current form up on that dividing embankment, it was a great idea to knock it all down and start fresh with a new tramway with green (grass) track and 750v overhead electrification. giving some serious Manchester Metrolink vibes.
Will be interesting to see where this development goes given that looking at the plans for the Cardiff Bay Regeneration project the line is shown as diverting off into a tramway before reaching Cardiff Bay Station.
I agree on the embankment front but at the least they're greatly increasing the number of crossings to lower it's dividing status at least a little bit.
The current plans for the rebuild of Cardiff bay station have provision for the tracks to continue south through platform 2 (& proposed platform 3) I guess it would then snake across to Pierhead St, maybe with a potential stop in between at the flourish? I guess we'll see though as that is a separate project.
Nice update, enjoyed the video
Bob, I like your videos; always fascinating, especially the history and the disappeared items.
Have you considered some strange features on the old Barry Railway ? Should I say more ?
Maybe, but that remains largely upon you.
Please do, always interested in learning more
I'll email you. Idea.
Not that many years ago I remember the overall roof of the old station and the disused tracks across the road towards the Pier Head. I do wish they would stop calling it Tram-Train. Tram-Train is when the City tram runs onto the main line railway. Running tram-like vehicles on the railway might look flashy but that is not Tram-Train.
I have seen a photo of the roof but couldn't find one I can use within copyright. It is definitely a shadow of it's former self.
Why is the platform so long at Cardiff Bay? Royal train? What?
Used to be the main terminus for Cardiff so they ran very long trains up the valleys. It would have been before the days of cars, so trains were the main means of transport
Great video, I guess if it's what the people want then it's good they've listened, but is that the end of the aspiration to run the "tram trains" on street" as intended?
I think there are discussions about taking them towards St Mellons via the streets and current underused tracks, and maybe some extensions at the top end of the lines. Having got them it's easier to plan the routes than if they had conventional Stadler FLIRTs
Cardiff Council's Cardiff Bay / Atlantic Warf Masterplan depicts the current bay branch line breaking off into a new street level tramway just before reaching the current terminus, passing by the Millennium Centre, briefly running parallel with the A4232 before curving down towards Roath Basin and straightening out to run across into a disused area of the docks where I would assume the route would revert back to heavy rail style fully segregated track and switch from batteries to overhead 25kv, the route then follows a disused freight line and sidings up to the South Wales Main Line at Newport Road, with two new stations likely at Splott and Newport road, before continuing on to terminate at Cardiff Parkway.
All together around half a mile of street running tramway traversed entirely on battery power.
Cardiff Council has ambitions for this and having the tram trains makes it feasible. But as yet there is no money set aside for it or any formal plans for it, hence TfW using Cardiff Bay. I would love to see it happening but it's a long way in the future if it does.
mines a nice Tea!
Thank you for the video :-) I'm visiting for a few days in a week or so and I love Cardiff Bay.
The station has already started to change, two lines have been started already. Cardiff Bay is a great place, hope you enjoy it
My Grandad apprenticed with the TVR , Bute Docks sheds 1918-23, and became a Docks Engineer on lease from TVR.
Went to Caerphilly sheds after that, then ROF during the war.
His Dad had a boat building business on the Glamorgan Canal, near the sea lock.
He built a model of the Marchioness of Bute, and trundled it up to Lord Bute in the Castle, on a rickshaw.
He also remembered waving Scott off from Roath Basin..😃
@@althomas3168 amazing memories. These are the things we need to record and write down. Thanks for sharing them
@@bobsrailrelics Have you been to Cardiff Bay Lately? If so, How's it looking?
I was down there on Monday and an update video will be out in the next couple of weeks. Part of a short three videos update. They have done a lot it's fair to say.
swansea needs one first. the transport there is dire. cardifd has like 20 stations and swansea has 4. even neath-port talbot has more stations than swansea. the buses and taxis are too unreliable and expensive too.
I kinda agree but I think Cardiff needs some improvements, as it's the capital of a modern country and has the largest population in Wales
Its a bit disappointing that the trams will just be on existing lines. Waste of money 😔
Plan is to take them through the Bay and onto the old Taff Vale lines. Consultation is out now for it.
