  • The first week of June 2024 and we're on the train to Cardiff Bay to view the progress on the extension of the line further down into the Bay. Plus the extra platforms are being installed half way down the tracks. Finally alternate trains now go from the Bay to Pontypridd.

You are creating a record of the historic investment in rail infrastructure. It truly is a good news story.
    Awesome stuff.

Threading a 2,000 tonne coal train through an intensive passenger timetable was quite an achievement. The drivers of the coal train were excellent and were able to keep time almost perfectly day after day.

the bay is a bit of mess , but putting back the " mainline" access for service is good . Now we need a railtour to down the branch line :)

Very enjoyable, Mike. That last shot was definitely worth waiting for- great vantage point.
I do hope something is done about the lineside vegetation- it is even established on the bridge over the mainline.
I have recently been informed by Nick Millington, of Network Rail, that there will be no OLE installed between Cardiff Central and Queen Street, with the trains going to use batteries on this stretch. Do you happen to know if Queen Street itself will be wired and if so, down to Cardiff Bay? I am curious as there doesn't seem to be much published information on this in the railway press and TfW's press releases aren't very informative.

Queen St isn't being electrified. The wires north of there will start at Heath Jcn in the Rhymney branch and just past Cathays/Crwys Road on the Llandaff branch. They Bay branch looks like it'll be electrified from the new station down to the Bay (and beyond eventually)

Thank you for this interesting video. The stanchions for the wires on the Rhymney line start just south of the bridge over Wedal Road, some way south of Heath Junction. It’s a great shame that there was no provision to reinstate at least part of the former double track on the Coryton branch, for if that had been provided, the service could be at 15 minute intervals, with units crossing on the branch. At least with the new timetable trains now run at half hourly intervals all day until very late !

@@StripeyNick Thanks for that info. From a personal point of view, I feel that having so many gaps in the OLE increases the probabilities of failure, but we shall see.

I showed the date on the clip, 23rd November 2023. That was the last full delivery to Port Talbot. Some ran on odd later dates to remove the remains from the site
