You missed one thing: Zack also had Lisa next to him for years and ignored her to hook up with Kelly, Jessie, and literally every other girl. Suddenly, when he realized Lisa is talented and has a future, he decided he may want to ride those coattails (robetails?) and decided he suddenly has feelings for her, too.
I always hated that there was never any real fallout between Zack and Screech in the show. By all accounts, Zack is the main reason Screech is bullied. He is the reason the girls are weirded out by him because Zack was always forcing him to do stuff like sneak into girls locker rooms or make subliminal tapes. We saw numerous times throughout the show that when he hung out with the girls by himself, they actually liked him and saw him as sweet and charming. And to top it all off, He came up with the name "Screech" when all of the teachers and students used to call him by his real name, Samuel.

Funny thing is Lisa never gave Screech hope that he'd ever have a chance with her. She's been shutting him down since the Miss Bliss days but Zack actually encouraged Screech in this episode to go for it then proceeded to go for it himself. Yep Zack is trash.
I honestly just believe it was poor writing. I'm not saying she has to have feelings but the whole thing could have been handled way better and Zach hand in everything was gross since he had prior knowledge and you know just being a decent person.

I would do the same exact if I was Screech I would dismiss the whole gang and stay to myself. Zack especially would never be my friend anymore and you’re right they all used him and treated him badly except for Kelly who recognizes his genius.
I think it was more of the time than the episode. I think the mixed relationship would have caused more unfortunate ruckus than anything. It was a good storyline for an episode but not a “carry on” storyline, even though in real life they were together in a relationship. I think their relationship is probably what pushed this story line, maybe the actors wanted it.
Maybe it's for better they didn't go on with this story line cause Zack would have dumped Lisa eventually. If he was trash to his friends he would be also a trash to his girlfriend(s). Hey didn't that just happened in real life between Mark Paul and Lark?
It was a great show; but the only common denominator to trash was ZACK. Jessie a distant second; however, she admitted she was immature and realized the error of her ways. Zack didn't because he can't because he's a narcissist.

It seems like, in the show, A.C. Slater was the nicest to Screech. Anything that Slater said towards Screech was honest and genuine. Zack didn't care about Screech until it benefitted him.
INFERNO95 I think Slater’s “insults” toward him were more just good-natured ribbing, versus Lisa’s which were more mean-spirited. She always tried to avoid inviting him to parties that she invited all her other friends to.

missym877 True, that’s why in my opinion they overdid it as a running gag. It was funny for a while, but realistically a guy would give up after he knew he didn’t have a chance and look elsewhere. Even though I thought Lisa was gratuitously mean sometimes, and didn’t appreciate the good things he did for her, things no other guy would do. Still, he should have taken no for an answer. The writers just seemed to want to keep that gag running as long as they could.
I think Dustin diamond was misunderstood but when you dealing with those clowns tell me you wouldn't go psycho I think back then most of them were real scumbags and pos yeah Dustin wasn't perfect but I bet you he was more grounded than they were some of them I wouldn't be surprised that they really believe they were those characters
Zach knew Screech liked Lisa. He told him to go after her at the beginning of the episode. Why would Zach say "if I knew it would bother you, I wouldn't do it." Zach is maniacal.
The writers should have just reversed the dialogue in the first scene. Have Zach be the one to tell Screech to give it up and everyone else being obliviously positive.
@@GAshoneybear I don’t think the others would have done that, though. They wanted to be honest with Screech. That was in character for them, in no other episodes had they ever encouraged him to pursue Lisa. But it was totally in character for Zack to be dishonest just to get what he wanted.
GAs honeybear true, he did in some episodes tell Screech that he did not have a chance with Lisa, but it was not consistent. At other times he would try to get Screech to do favors for him by telling Screech that it would impress Lisa if he did.
I’ve only just realised that Zack often spends an entire episode chasing a girl, only to have them disappear by the next episode. Even Zack & Kelly’s relationships were Off & On with no explanation.
jason newstead the writers said they couldn’t keep Zack and Kelly together, because it would be boring. They would let them date for a bit or tease they were going to and then crap all over it. Repeat. Frustrating preteens but kept them watching.
At least with Jessie & Slater, eventually their relationship was truly over. Perhaps in a teen comedy version of "Will they? Won't they?", best to keep young viewers guessing about when two popular characters will get together & stay together. Maybe Zack & Kelly needed to grow up first before deciding they were meant for each other. Plus, young relationships often break off for silly reasons all the time, but maybe you take a step back, realize you were wrong to call it off because of THAT & decide to start again.

It was because the idea of an teenage interracial couple was deemed to problematic for the show’s format. This episode was meant to Segway into Lisa and Zack’s relationship since Mark and Lark were dating in real life, but the producers canned the idea.

Lisa and Zach were the only couple that should have made it though. She was on the show since the first season and was his longest friend. Low key I think people were still feeling some kind of way because he was white and she was black. Exactlyyyy!!! Their relationship was a building one and the chemistry was just unbearable, it was so cute that it always made me stupidly smile. I never felt that way about any other relationship on the show, even though there were other cute relationships but this one was just different and really special. Zack openly professed to Screech being his "best friend" at least once during the show's history. He couldn't have been THIS oblivious to Screech's feelings for Lisa, or he basically didn't care and went in when she wanted to go in for a kiss as well. Of all the trashy things on this series, this one takes the cake.
The only reason why this episode was probably made was because the actors who played Zack and Lisa were actually a couple for a few yrs during their time on the show. I grow up watching this show and still love it.

Just watched this episode the other day and the sexual chemistry was definitely not there. If anything, they had a “comfortable” type of chemistry. Their kiss was also remarkably lame for two people in a long-term relationship.

I think Screech thrived most when he was away from Zack, and came back on "SBTB: The New Class" as Belding's aide. Screech seemed more confident, having Belding's trust, a sense of responsibility, the respect of the New Class, and not having Zack make him feel bad about himself.
When Screech told Lisa, "But I love you." That broke my heart. that's one of the episodes from "Saved BY the Bell" that I remember. It's just that when Screech said that, it seems so sincere. I do remember that feeling it gave me when I first saw it.

Zach and Lisa actually was dating in real life at time. So the network tried to capitalize on it, but received backlash from fans after the episode aired, so they cancelled any further plans of continuing the on screen romance and made Zack pine after Kelly again.
literally no one took this show, or its cast, seriously in anyway. I remember the one guy who admitted to watching this show regularly, get ridiculed at baseball practice.
In reality, those two were dating in real life at the time. They wanted to do a story arc with them. But they got a lot of backlash from the fans, so they scrapped their love story.
I really don’t know why Screech stayed friends with Zack for so long, it was kind of a Stockholm Syndrome situation. Maybe Zack protected him from bullies when they were little kids, but once Screech was older Screech could defend himself, and really had nothing to gain from Zack.

It seems like, in the show, A.C. Slater was the nicest to Screech. Anything that Slater said towards Screech was honest and genuine. Zack didn't care about Screech until it benefitted him.

missym877 True, that’s why in my opinion they overdid it as a running gag. It was funny for a while, but realistically a guy would give up after he knew he didn’t have a chance and look elsewhere. Even though I thought Lisa was gratuitously mean sometimes, and didn’t appreciate the good things he did for her, things no other guy would do. Still, he should have taken no for an answer. The writers just seemed to want to keep that gag running as long as they could.

The writers should have just reversed the dialogue in the first scene. Have Zach be the one to tell Screech to give it up and everyone else being obliviously positive.

Plus, young relationships often break off for silly reasons all the time, but maybe you take a step back, realize you were wrong to call it off because of THAT & decide to start again.

Just watched this episode the other day and the sexual chemistry was definitely not there. If anything, they had a “comfortable” type of chemistry. Their kiss was also remarkably lame for two people in a long-term relationship.
