  • This is my 40’x 32’ garage I built mostly by myself. I paid someone to do my site clearing, footers, block work, slab, roofing, and brick veneer. I have roughly 35k in it. I hope this video is helpful. There is 8 yards of concrete in the footers, 8 yards in the block core fill, 20 yards in the slab, and I have roughly 20 yards to go for the driveway. Links to stuff.

    I like the way you did the gable truss for the overhang. When people nail the overhang to the outside it starts to sag over time. The way you have it makes it a lot stronger. Nice garage!

    I LOVE how you did the simple dimensions thing. I'm about 1/3 through the video as I post this, but so far, all I would've done differently is trip 10's instead of two 9's and a 10, and I would've gone bigger on the overhangs. Then again, if you've ever watched Matt Risinger's videos, I would've had the roof built to be seamed and sealed in to the walls with the overhangs added on top as a sub-structure that way everything on the inside was conditioned space with no leaks/air gaps or heat collection zones or whatever.

    • @savemoneydiy87

      Thanks. I appreciate it. If I did it again I would also go with all 10’ wide doors. I would have also did cathedral trusses and made my middle door 12’ tall. But that’s hindsight now. Thanks for watching. There is an update video too. I’m actually finishing hanging the last 2 pieces of ceiling drywall in the shop as I write this.

      @@savemoneydiy87 I watched the update video! :) And yeah, Cathedral trusses with a 12' center door would've been bitchin! Could've also done some weird stuff where the center was channeled out higher while the two regular sides were still 12', too. In any case, great shop build, dude. Hope you enjoy it for many years to come!

    Outstanding garage! Thank you for pointing out the problems. Getting ready to do this too, so anything I can learn to avoid costly mistakes is welcomed. It looks like you're in Upstate SC. Will have a loft for storm emergencies, one container will have all freezers and food storage along with water or whatever else i will need to live for 3-6months without having to leave.

      I just look at it from a different angle because I’m an electrician, if your getting the work done the labor is where the cost is and if you doing a new service it doesn’t really matter if it’s 200amp or 100amp it’s still the same work your only paying couple hundred bucks for bigger wire and a bigger panel.

    The only drawback I see to the 200 amp service is the added cost of the base monthly bill. If you look close at the statement I would bet the base fee is in the $15 - $20 range, which means you fork out $200 annually just to have a separate service. (that's $2k over 10 years) The actual power used is chump change. What I am driving at is depending on the house service (200 amps or more?) you could have run a sub panel to the garage. I wouldn't go less than 100 amp panel but it's one of those things that if you plan well can save a bunch in the long run. Look at it this way.... 50 amps for a welder, 20 amps for the lift, a bunch of lights... and you still have reserve, even at 100 amps.

    • @savemoneydiy87
      @savemoneydiy87  3 года назад

      Yeh I thought about that but my house currently has a 200 amp panel with a sub panel upstairs. The 200 amp main panel is located in the basement and when I finished my basement I wired off of that so I didn’t want to add anything else to the panel.

    • @savemoneydiy87

      My bill runs about $23 a month.

    • @rupe53
      @rupe53 3 года назад

      @@savemoneydiy87 ... if that works for you then ok, but my comment was more aimed at others who might be on a different budget. It's one of those things where if the house needs an upgrade anyway then it changes the game because the money can be better spent elsewhere if you can get away with a smaller service in the garage. I have worked in several facilities (commercial) where we never had more than 100 amps of power. OTOH, in one situation we had to choose between 5 tons of AC versus the welder. It was an easy choice to install a transfer switch because any welding would be done with the doors open. Still in all, we had a lift, plenty of lighting, and a 3 hp compressor in a 20 x 55 ft shop. (slightly smaller than yours)
