I lived near Dayton when Pete came back to Cincinnati to manage and play for the Reds. His return galvanized the fan base and the team. I was fortunate to attend Opening Day 1985. Pete hit second and did his patented head first slide on a double in the first inning. His energy was off the charts. Anybody who evaluates Pete Rose, the baseball player, solely on his stats (which are pretty ridiculous, even as a compiler), then you never saw the man play. Pete Rose was a field general throughout his career. A difference maker. A winner.
Pete Rose, the man, was truly flawed. I went from loving him to despising him once I saw him hawking his autograph on a sidewalk in Cooperstown on induction day in 2000, mere minutes after his fellow Reds Tony Perez, Sparky Anderson, and Marty Brenneman were inducted. That's when I knew that he was lying about his baseball gambling, knew that he was self-centered and greedy; knew that he only cared about himself. Pete just couldn't let them have their day. He wanted some more spotlight and money.
I'm on the fence about whether the player should get into the HOF, but I'll never think well of the person. That being said, I hope he's at peace.
R.I.P. Hit King, aka Charlie Hustle...

I met Rose when I was a little kid, age 12. It was amazing. He was managing the Reds at the time, and I met him before the game because we got there early. It was such a thrill. I got an autograph on the bill of my Reds hat. Rose then bet me that his team would lose that day by at least two runs. I was Reds fan, so I took the bet. I thought the Reds would win. I figured nothing would come from it.
After the game, in which the Reds lost by 4, Rose tracked me down in the parking lot as I was leaving with my family. He grabbed me by the back of my jersey and demanded payment. It was only $10, but I didn't have it. I bought a hot dog and a drink at the game, and that was my whole allowance. Pete then grabbed my wallet to confirm it was empty. He then took my shoes as "payment." He said it was a "good lesson" for me. Anyway, I made it home without shoes, but I'll always cherish the autograph I have on that ball cap. Magical.

Pete Rose never bet on baseball as a player. Rose was banned by MLB for life for betting on baseball as a manager. The Hall of Fame as a "separate" entity of MLB should do the right thing and let him in. The Hall is filled with a cavalcade of whackos. You might as well put Pete in by default.
To MLB, shame on you. MLB rakes in millions annually from sports betting, but somehow you continue to shame Pete Rose and his legacy. It's time to do the right thing and petition the Hall to allow Rose enshrinement
