    TECH TIP - Solution to foam rubber deteriorating. I have been using this bike rack for a few weeks and it did not take long for the foam rubber protection to start to disintegrate. Especially when clamping down near the folding welds on the XP. The uneven welds/hinge area causes excessive wear on the foam rubber. I load two XP's and flip the bikes so the fronts point in opposite directions. This results in the KAC rack clamping on one of the XP's right around the weld/folding hinge area. The solution is I went to Home Depot and purchased a dishwasher drain hose. This is a heavy duty rubber hose with a 5/8" inside diameter. I removed the old foam and replace with the same length of dishwater hose. A little WD-40 and they went right on. Not only is the hose more durable, it grips the bike frame better, and not not mar the paint like the foam when highly compressed.

    To work on the bike in an upright position, as opposed to handlebars and seat, I have repurposed a heavy patio umbrella stand, using a closet pole in place of the umbrella.
    I lift the bike over the top of the pole and lower it onto the pole and into the pipe that holds the seat. It is high enough to raise the bike so I can hand pedal the bike for adjustments. Works like a charm..
    BTW, if you are having trouble raising the XP onto this rack, it's even more trouble loading it into the bed of a pickup truck. I have removed the jump seat from my truck (not needed) and load the folded bike into the back and bungee around the seat pipe to the passenger headrest.. This method will accommodate two XP's, one behind each seat..

Well new KAC 4 bike rack arrived yesterday. I spent $175 for a welding shop to replace weak part with new and heavier metal and weld gussets on the vertical posts the stronger those areas also. Looks like this rack might be going on the market

I take out the battery when transporting. Help take off 15 lbs per bike. Heavy duty rack. Do you have anybidea how to stop the side to side wobble? The anti wobble works great for the hitch insert but not the over all wobble coming from the adjustable section.

I've asked KAC for a couple measurements, but they can't seem to provide this for me--could you tell me the distance from the center of the second wheel hoop to the center of the fourth wheel hoop, and the distance from the inside edge (nearest vehicle) of the second hoop to the inside edge (to rear away from vehicle) of the fourth hoop? Also, I need 2 measurements on the L-shaped piece of frame that goes into the hitch: what is vertical distance from the top of the horizontal piece of L to the top of the vertical part of the L, and what is the distance from the hitch to the inside of the vertical part? Thanks so much.

    I just got one for my MTB and families bikes. It is super heavy duty and heavy. I like everything you get with the rack. Was missing end cap and they sent me one right away. Love everything except I wish the hold down bars would rotate making it easier to load and unload the bike without having to tilt the bike.

    • @JeremiahMcintosh

      If you slide the holding bars off then you can bend fold down the middle one and easily put the bike on then fold it back up, that is what I do with my bike because it is around 60 pounds!

    I really wanted to like this rack but it doesn't work on my FJ Cruiser. The part that bends up will block my door from opening because my spare tire is in the way. So for anyone with a rear door that swings open, you'll want to check clearance. That bend that comes up is pretty big and will get in the way. Imho this is best for hatch type doors.

    • @JeremiahMcintosh
      @JeremiahMcintosh  4 года назад

      Great question. Probably not because the receiver part of the main rack inside dimension is 1 11/16 x 1 11/16 ...outside is 2” x 2” which would be the same as your rack. You may be able to make some kind of adapter out of square tubing to fit in your rack that will fit in this rack kind of like the extender for the four bikes.

    I have a rear hitch motorcycle rack from Harbor Freight, Haul-Master, Item #:62837. It is rated at 400 lbs., made entirely from aluminum and has a attached loading ramp as well. No need to lift the bike/motorcycle into the rack. However, it is only for a single motorcycle. A reviewer indicated that he uses this rack for his heavy e-bike. I have carried a 250cc motorcycle on it; next time I will try carrying the Lectric XP.

      @JeremiahMcintosh  3 года назад +1

      The only difference I’m aware of is the older style like I have has knobs that you turn to tighten on the center hold down clamp and only one locks. The new model has more of a ratcheting style hold down bracket and each one locks.
      To be honest I’m not sure which one is better but I would lock the bikes with a heavy chain as well if left unattended.

  • @EsverCamacho

    I like your review in how thorough it is. I'm concerned with your comment that you can remove the whole rack by removing two bolts. It that only for the last two bikes or for all four? Why is there a key connected to the hitch if you can just remove the whole rack relatively easily. How are the bikes individually secured to the rack? Thanks for your time.

    • @JeremiahMcintosh
      @JeremiahMcintosh  4 года назад +4

      Where the rack folds up on the vehicle there is only one bolt that holds it on there and if you remove that bolt You can basically remove the whole rack. This can be prevented by replacing the bolt with a locking hitch pin or welding the Nutt onto the bolt so that it could not be removed. I’m pretty sure this is probably the same with most bike racks and I recommend using a heavy duty chain lock to lock the bikes to the vehicle if you leave them anywhere unattended.

  • @daveruggles4450

    One thing that is important is the quality and grade of the metal throughout. low-grade metal will fatigue. Especially the hook that holds down on the frame, As a precaution, add winch straps for safety. Also as previously mentioned replace the foam hook hold-down pads with rubber. Foam is unacceptable.

    • @JeremiahMcintosh

      The only issue I see is the clamps that come down to hold the bikes. you may have to shift one bike to one side or the other for the clamps to come down to hold the bikes if that makes sense or figure out a way to put a top tube bar on for the other clamp to hold the bike. kind of hard to explain but I haven’t really tried it yet with two steps throughs that’s just from my speculation.

      You should not have a problem with 2 bikes on the 2” version it seems very strong however the spring loaded latching pin that keeps the rack from tilting makes me think maybe I should drill and put a pin under just in case it fails and Pops out.

    Great review, well done. But I don't think the locking mechanism with the square pin that slides into an open slot is good enough. You noticed it too, and made a comment at 3:05 of your video. I bought the two fat tire bike version for my 1.5 inch receiver last fall. The rack flops around loosely in the receiver because it arrived without a set screw to tighten the connection. I have scoured the internet for any mention of Overdrive bike racks, but the company does not seem to exist. Amazon also says that the company does not exist either, and offers no warranty support whatsoever. So now I am stuck with a defective product from a non existent company with zero customer support. Does anyone know what kind of screw fastener I need to look for is that will allow me to tighten the bar to receiver connection?

      It should of come with a Locking anti-rattle bolt as seen in my video, in fact mine came with one extra one as well. The company you are looking for is overdrive brands and you can contact them through Amazon where it says shipped from and sold by maybe they can send you another one but ultimately if it was missing when you received it you should’ve maybe just returned it and bought another one if they would not send you a new pin.
      I’ll see if using a regular pin you may be able to use an anti-rattle mechanism like this amzn.to/2x3KptX
      Just keep in mind This is a affiliate link and I will get a small commission if it is purchased through this link which is no extra cost to you. Hope this helps.

    HELLO JEREMIAH, VERY GOOD VIDEO on the fat tyre bike rack heavy duty electric bikes , Overdrive sport for 4 bikes. I may purchase this one for a two wheel e bike and a adult European UK tricycle. ( ALPINE EXPLORER ELECRTIC TRICYCLE , in ENGLAND UK and a fat tyre 2 wheeled e-bike like the SONDORS XS FOLD . ) THIS WILL CARRY THE WEIGHT fine if I remove the battery packs. can you tell me if I am able to fix a LIGHT BOARD ON THIS BIKE RACK for tail lights and directional indicators can be seen clearly. this would be fitted onto my RV HERE. AM WAITING FOR some info from the manufacture off the ALPINE EXPLORER TRICYCLE ( its on RUclips & there website video ) for the distance measurement (gap) between the rear two wheels centre off the tyre to centre off tyre, CAN YOU TELL ME MATE is there any way off adjusting the gap closing it up or widening it off the wheel tray ( wheel holder ) on one bike rack too the other wheel holder on the bike rail. so you can move the bikes further apart or a little closer if needed. PARTICULAR for the centre wheel holder that you showed was only 10.5 inches apart instead off the 12.5 inches gap off the first bike wheel holder. much appreciated thank you kindly Jeremiah. Paul H

      It works good with both of our bikes however we have one of each. The only thing that would be difficult with two step Throughs is the arm that comes down to secure the bikes are two different lengths and the taller one may not come down far enough to hold the tube on one of the step throughs. You might have to figure out how to put some sort of top tube Bar on one of the bikes if that makes sense.

      No problem that’s awesome I’m glad I could help. Like I said it would probably work but you may have to add a top tube bracket like the one I showed and one of my bike rack videos to go from the base of the handlebars to the seat post and then the clamp can hold it down there. Honestly you would probably have the same problem with any bike rack. Some bike racks have the holders that hold the wheels down instead of the bike itself but you might run into an issue with the fenders with that style.

    I think any hitch mounted bike mount will work for an ebike as long as the tires fit properly. The weight should not be a factor as long as the electric bike is mounted closest to the hitch. You can buy a cheap walmart hitch mount for bicycles and a human that weighs 150 plus pounds can stand on the bike rack on the main support beam closest to the hitch. You could not stand on the sides where the tires go of course. I think the weight recommendations are just a safety factor and to keep people from trying to put a heavy dirt bike on a bicycle mount. Old timers would make anything work that they had laying around. The modern generation always wants the best of everything and tries to evaluate every aspect of products and safety. I am guilty of it myself. Not sure if that makes us better or worse than the old timers in the long run. I guess time will tell.

    • @JeremiahMcintosh
      @JeremiahMcintosh  4 года назад

      That’s the problem with most fat tires they don’t usually fit unless you buy additional fat tire racks which this one includes. I did not shown in the video but I stood on the back of the hitch when it was all together plus had my ebike mounted up close to the car and it supported me no problem at 160 pounds plus the bike.
      However going down the road hitting bumps obviously will put more stress on it but I don’t think it will be a problem at all.

    • @NightThings99
      @NightThings99 4 года назад

      @@JeremiahMcintoshYea, those hitch mounts seem to move around a little in the hitch of the vehicle. I have a regular two bike hitch carrier and the electric bike fits in it fine, the only problem is that the fat tires slide down into where the wheels go. It just makes it a little snug when you go to get it out. Whats the inside width measurement where the tires sit, on that one? I have the two bike Swagman and the inside width is 3 and a half inches. It says it is rated for 35 pounds a bike. I have had the lectric xp and another bike on there and stood on it and it is solid. That is over 300 lbs on the swagman and it does not bend etc. Maybe the companies are being cautious when they tell you that it is only designed to hold a certain weight. I am pretty sure the swagman will hold 500 pounds plus if it is evenly distributed before it would bend.

    I specifically didn't buy a fat-bike because range was my primary focus. I wanted to be able to ride 100 miles with a fully loaded (more like over-loaded) tour bike pulling a single wheel suspension trailer. More and more often when I ride on biking infrastructure I see fat-bikes riding in pairs and small groups. I'd love to be able to ride over and through everything they can with 4" tires. The biggest drawback I have seenwith fat-bikes is having to transport them places to ride. I was riding the Foothills trail near Orting, WA and watched a little lady (wife I presume) about 130 lbs. 5'7" unload a fat-bike (her husbands I think) to get to the other fat-bike and then unload it. She lifted the back tire off the stand and drops it to the ground, She squeezes the back brake and pulls back on the bars lifting the front tire up and over the carrier and down to the ground... not even straining. After both bikes are on the ground she opened the back door of the car to grab her water bottle and rode off while a guy sat in the car on the phone the whole time. Ya know... I'm not so sure she was coming back. If those bikes had been in the back of a pickup rather than a low trailer rack I might have had to help her
