Howell should never have dropped as far in the draft as he did. He carried the NC offense his last year after losing his top two receivers and running backs to the NFL, yet he was seen as having regressed. Washington got lucky. Will he be a hall of fame qb, maybe not, but he is far better than most pundits claimed he would be..
Everyone just looks at where he was picked in the draft and doesn't do there research. His softmore year he was in talks for being the number 1 overall pick. He led a unc team with no defense to the orange bowl
Thank you Im glad other ppl see it they way I do he should of never dropped to the 5th round they were talking about him being the 1st over all pick also had more touchdowns than Trevor Lawrence and Watson in college
Appears we for lucky with EB too. Hope we lock both of them up for a long time as long as the wheels don’t fall off the wagon over the next 15 games. Having a QB that can play the position is only half the puzzle you need an offensive system the QB can play well in.
@@baileyjones1854 Love Sam and I am a huge Tar Heel fan, but that Orange bowl team had two of the best running backs in Carolina history plus 2 elite Wrs. Sam was great but he had a ton of help
@@Keator0728 i know im not saying he didn't i just don't see why he dropped so far in the draft. Kenny pickett was awful for like 5 years and was good his last year and was a first round pick
He's only 22! So much room to grow and develop!
23 bday was Saturday
Sam looks fantastic. As a Washington fan, I am past can Sam be the starting q.b. I am starting to think he can be elite. This Washington team is reminding me of the 2021 Bengals with Joe Burrows. He has the same cool demeaner as Joe and is a football throwing Jessie. It is still early but Washington fan is getting excited. This might be the start of something really, really special. God knows, we are long overdue. HTTR
you have the same feelings as me, it’s not a question if he can be the QB1 it’s a question if he can get top 5 he makes great reads, stays poised no matter the situation, has a rocket arm, and doesn’t shoot himself in the foot to kill momentum, also a silent leader..
34th starting QB in 20 years. Lol I’m like this is Washington. Let’s see what happens.
Sam Howell doesn’t play like a 5th rounder. I’m glad he sat out for a full season his rookie year to develop his foot work. I’m glad he fell to the 5th round with the weapons and defense we have. Firing Scott Turner and hiring OC Eric Bienemy was the icing on the cake. Bienemy is running the RPO scheme that Sam was doing at UNC. Sam is getting better each week in his development.
Preach, exactly how I feel
Plays more like a certain late 6th rounder so far...HIYOOOOOO
The sky is the limit for Howell. He's as good or better than any young quarterback in the league.
Only qb thats better in their second/third year is joe burrow and trevor lawrence
Nvm burrow is in his 4th year💀
And he's basically as rookie, he only played 1 game the year he was drafted, that's way less than what Pickett, Willis, Purdy, Thompson and Ridder had. I think you almost have to compare him more with the qbs drafted this year
As a UNC fan I'm happy for the new owner and fans. I know how good Sam is and the rest of the team is absolutely stacked.
Yeah when Sam develops a true rapport with Terry, Jahan, and Curtis, that offense is gonna be magical. Hoping everyone stays healthy though behind that line, cuz Sam stays under siege.
@@BigTwonLTthat line is better than the media is leading you to believe. I watch every game and longtime fan of unc and washington.
Sam Howell isn't the typical 5th round pick though. He was projected to be a 1st round pick a couple of years ago. His stock dropped some because UNC lost talent around him and he had a bit of a down year, but he was still projected by most to be a 2nd-3rd rounder the year he entered the draft. Him dropping to the 5th was a steal.
He’s always been a 1st rounder. There are very few QBs who balled in college like Sam did.
I've been watching football closely for decades, and it's been tough as a washington fan for 30 years, seen more quarterbacks than Any other team cycle through, and this kid has something. He's got a team that believes in him, and we'll make some noise this year
We've made the mistake starting a rookie too soon -- some would argue we did that with Dwayne Haskins.
Not only too early but thrust him in the lineup with ZERO practice reps with the first string . Graden was forced to draft him and play him by Snyder. He wanted him to ride the bench year one. Glad Rivera “didn’t know he was this good” in his words lol!
We never should've drafted haskins..that was Dan
@@MrTHUD03should never take Ohio state quarterbacks
@@tommyriner9914leave my team alone 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Haskins never had the mental acuity needed! He was lazy and didn't prepare or master the offense. In college he was a man among boys. In the NFL everyone was as good or better than him.
So why can't the NFL scouts evaluate quarterbacks? What are they looking at?
Their most recent season, typically. A drop in numbers means a drop in draft status.
Because it's really hard to separate a QB from his surrounding talent and system in college. NFL offenses are also typically much more complex than college and it's hard to project how well they will learn them. Also because it's not just about how good the QB is, but also how good his NFL team is at developing him. The best QBs typically go early in the draft to the worst teams, which sets them up for failure. Lower-rated QBs may go to a good team, but never get a chance to play above an established starter with a big advantage in experience.
They are listening to PFF morons and all of the hype going towards QBs who have teamed up with ex QBs who claim to be expert and are pimp’n them for their own financial profit.
I think Sam should've been a 2nd round pick at the latest. Jalen Hurts was the first pick in the 2nd round. Sam Howell was a far better passer in college with an obviously stronger arm and he ran for 800 yrds as a junior so you know he's mobile enough to extend plays and escape pressure in the NFL. Even if they thought his ceiling was a backup qb that's still worth a 3rd round pick. But he actually fell into a great situation. I was excited when we got him in DC
Everyone who's followed Howell's career knows that he has the talent. The question was whether he'd be able to adapt to an NFL offense. With Bienemy's help, it looks like he's figuring it out right before our eyes. His decisiveness and ability to put balls in tight windows is something Washington hasn't seen since Kirk Cousins. He just turned 23 years old and is 3-0 as a starter. Looking forward to seeing NFL media who trashed him in the offseason eat their words. This kid has got IT and he's only getting better.
That’s exactly what I want to start seeing is the media eat their words on Mr. Howell
I agree with you. I think
Sam is throwing into tight spaces and more downfield than Cousins did his first couple of seasons.
Just because you are picked in the fifth round, doesn't mean you are are "fifth round draft pick." Anyone who watched Howell at UNC knew he was a "first round" talent. He had a "first round" grade on his after his sophomore year.
His throw to Terry M for the 30-yard TD is easily the best throw of the year--and only 8 QBs or so can make that throw.
Agree. Biggest draft blunder since Tom Brady.
Dude our Practice squad qb Jake Fromm is better than Zach. Not a hard take
A half eaten jersey mike’s Italian sub is better than Zach Wilson. Dude is terrible
Fromm could beat out Jordan Love.
@@apollobernet now you are really smoking too much K2. Fromm is a JAG- just at better JAG than Zach. Who doesn’t even deserve to be a practice squad spot
@@apollobernetare you on Crack?? 😂😂😂
Unless there's a Wentz like regression, which is extremely rare, he's gonna be the QB for the forseeable future, and his ceiling is a top 10 starting QB, which I would take in a second.
the run on 3rd and 11 was a huge huge play
And it seems like the bigger the moment is the better he plays, Commanders fans we have arrived 🙌
Lets see how he plays against the bills and eagles some of the better defenses in the league
@@MrTHUD03he’s about to be under siege. Especially against philly i hope our o line can hold up
Best thing about Sam being a competent or better starter is we can pay chase young, Montez sweat, and Kam curl.
This is the most overlooked part of all of this.
100%
I don’t believe we’ll be able to pay them all unfortunately but who knows with contract restructures and everything maybe
He was supposed to be a 1st rd. His arm accuracy is way better than most qbs not just Zach Wilson!!!! Check his throws against broncos!! He has a really good OC with Bieniemy n u can tell Kansas City is missing him!!
Watch the bad QB play around the league including veterans.
Ron talked about Sam Howell saying he would've played him much sooner. I disagree! I think we handled him perfectly. He played Dallas on week 18, Eric bienemy gets hired as OC and Sam looks NFL ready
Philip Rivers sat early too. Eli Manning and Big Ben didn't start to begin their careers either, but got in relatively early. The problem with sitting a franchise QB is that your window for a super bowl is wider when they're on a rookie contact. So if you sit him a year, then you lose 1 cheap year of a QB. You start him and let him work his way through like he would in the second year. And you get one extra cheap year to compete before the massive extension. As a later round pick, I believe there's no 5th year option, so they'll need to extend him earlier as well.
Aaron Rodgers sat for like 3 or 4 years behind Favre. It wasn't until the first year success of Luck, RG3, and Russell Wilson was when QBs starting their rookie year became the norm.
Sam Howell only sat because coaching staff sucked.
Sam Howell is SPECIAL
Sam didn’t lose his poise after getting hammered in the first half and led his team to a big win on the road he looked like a seasoned veteran!
Last year he would have been ruined if he was coached by Scott Turner on offense and he was the starting QB.
STILL would have liked him in there against the Browns instead of freaking Wentz. 😢
I love the way he gets rid of the ball. When there’s nothing open. The ball goes out of bounds. He’s making really smart decisions and that can’t be understated
Well that's just not accurate. He took multiple bad sacks that could have been avoided. Probably his biggest flaw
winning changes everyones’ perception… let’s hope we never lose
Is this even a question???
Howell is beyond a doubt the best QB of his draft class. With EB’s help he’s going to prove it……..
Sam looks so steady and calm PLUS can use his legs. Watch out NFC East
@CBS sports Radio give all props to OC Eric behinemy Howell basically a rookie he just watched he played one game.. what test can be greater for a OC then a young inexperienced QB with talent give my man his flowers Howell and Eric are intertwine no one else can take credit for what they do period
You speak truth. Sam will progress!
i dont care what nobody says sam got a great arm the throws ge be making is crazy 3rd and long i dont be to worried i swear he can theow that rock effortlessly i keep watching his highlights from colleg till now to make sure i dont over honor his arm slim make some crazy accurate throws he lut the ball in the right spot
He not mahomes already proven so give Eric his respect how he had a rookie second year QB come back like that with play calling
My big brother always said the best Redskin quarterback is sitting on the bench waiting
Howell is going to be a really good QB as pro! If he didn’t loose all the talent around him, he would have went toward top of list ! Take home over A huge chunk of the young QBs in league! He has to stop holding the ball so long but he will get it !
He was rated a 1st rounder his junior year if he declared for the draft😊
Great Juxtaposition, I have said since before Sam fell in the draft, That had he been able to declare after his Sophomore season, that he'd be a Jet, because he was better than Wilson.
Uncle Sam wants YOU!
Last Monday night after after Rodgers got hurt I tweeted that the Jets should call up the colts and give the colts what they want for Gardner Minshew. Zach Wilson was always a horrible pick if you wanted him to play early. Should’ve gotten a vet and let him sit for 2-3 years. Now his confidence is jacked and no one in the building believes in him. It’s frustrating when organizations fall in love with a guy because of how he throws the ball. And I’m not talking about accuracy. Usually its the velocity, the zip , the way the arm whips it that makes front offices drool. Accuracy can be iffy, might not have been a winner, clutch or made winning plays but if they have a live arm they’ll fix him up,
Colts aren't giving up Minshew, not with Richardson getting a concussion already
@@idawg7332 agreed. They’re late now
It was once the standard in the league to sit QBs early in their careers.
The football gods have forgiven the burgundy and gold
It’s insulting to even compare him to Zack Wilson
Joe Theismann sat early
That’s a low bar 😂😂😂
😂👏
Audio too low.
It wasnt Howell's fault, he lost two receivers a tight end and two linemen. Most of his junior year in college he lost multiple players and their replacements were mediocre at best. He had 818 yards and 11 touchdowns rushing the ball!!! If he had declared after his softmore year the talk was he would have been a top 5 pick no doubt. His deep ball is pretty, his mid feild passes have MONSTEOUS zip on them, it often surprises his own teamates. He can use his legs, is a threat in the open feild as well as in the red zone. He is still holding the ball a bit to long for my tastes and also can stare down receivers, but those can be coached up. I am absolutely stoked we stole him in the 5th round.
People wanna say we didt do alot right, yes, your right but Howell was only picked because of a trade The Redski...Commanders made at the beginning of the draft. They traded the 12th pick for the 18th n got Dotson. Then with the swaped picks from Buffalo got Robinson Jr. And netted Sam Howell and Cole Tunrner with the 5th rounder all due to a great coaching staffs idea to trade back.
The thing not mentioned here is his adjustment from week 1 to week 2. When flushed out of the pocket in week 2 he either threw the ball away, slid or and/or avoided any hits (esp late hits to the head!). That's great coaching!!! It's gotta be EB bc I just don't think RR is that smart. Sorry, not sorry! Lol

I don't know what you mean by decent weapons. Washington has tremendous weapons, we're talking about McLaurin, Dotson, Samuel, Dyami Brown, Thomas, Robinson and Gibson; that's much better than decent.
Sam is here now!! That's all that matters he will shine brighter, stronger, his calm Kool demeanor is everything!! He doesn't pout get mad he do that lookup come back and kick ass!😂❤
I. thought previous reports were that Rivera didn't recognize Howell's potential; and that it was Taylor Heineke who pointed out that Sam Howell should get the start last year in the final game. That narrative does not correlate with this one. Just asking for clarification
Taylor had nothing to gain by playing in a meaningless game knowing his contract was up. Why risk it. Instead of letting Sam play the second half Taylor told Ron to start him. Ron probably didn't know how high his upside was and he probably wasn't monitoring his improvement throughout the season. But Ron signed off on picking him in the 5th because it was great value despite not planning on taking a QB in the draft at all
Rivera puts his foot in his mouth and comments get blown out of proportion.
He wasnt Peyton Manning...Can we check in on Peytons rookie year? Man, these young analysts...
The benefit of sitting is you learn how to be a professional...from study to travel to handling the media all with no pressure but to earn your right with the secretary to the CEO... Teams need to invest in Oline before it ruins a QB
Wow
True he wasn't Peyton Manning who by the way threw more interceptions than touchdowns his rookie year and went 3-13 and Sam is currently 3-0 in his career
Howell was the better prospect coming out of college. Not surprising at all
Credit should be given to the Washington Organization. The drafted Howell in the 5th round, and before that they drafted Kirk Cousins in the 4th round. Kirk Cousins is arguably the best quarterback in the NFC right now. And to strike gold twice in the 4th round or later needs to be given credit where it's due.
Cousin’s numbers are Empty stats this year but I understand what you mean
2 different front offices
Someone cooked here
Lmao, everyone is better than Wilson. Howell looks like a real good QB but if they don't fix the O line he'll get hurt.
Heineke gave Sam Howell a shot. Sam balled the entire season and was overlooked. That’s how bad Scott Turner was. EB informed people earlier in the year he knew how good Sam was coming out of college. Sam Howell will only get better. He’s far from a 5th round QB.
Only 3 QBs in the last 5 NFL drafts should have ever gone before Sam Howell. Justin Herbert, Trevor Lawrence and Joe Burrow. The main reason is height. It’s not that Sam can’t ball with them it’s simply his height. I would say same about Jalen Hurts getting overlooked. Sam had a better arm coming out of college than Hurts. I liked Pickett but once again Sam has a better arm. The others 30+ QBs are junk. Tua is fragile but still lacks Sam’s deep ball.
Good coaching by someone whose been around Patrick Mahomes for the past five years may have helped Sam just a little bit
EB also wouldn’t have showed up if Sam Howell wasn’t talented.
He was a 5th round but shouldn't have been but idk why that's what ppl talk down to him about
The problem with QBs picked high in the draft is that there is a lot of pressure to play them. Forced to play on bad teams, it can be hard if there are flaws in your game. Would Wilson be a better QB if he sat? Who knows.
The best situations are those who can afford to sit a QB because they have a servicable starter. Course, if you are drafting a guy that high, you probably don't have that guy.
Sam Howell’s line is meh. It’s not like we have any first rounders. He would have survived on a bad line. In fact, he is
@@apollobernet The tackles are meh. The interior is pretty good. Half the sacks are on Howell.
Sam Howitzer
Those deep sideline passes are just too good!
He can spin it and is accurate.
This is way too early to talk like this. You won’t know what Sam is until 8 to 9 games in the season. Let’s pump the breaks with Sam and see how he does this week with the Bills.
He’s not declaring anything, he’s just stating what has happened which is Sam developing rapidly. Who would you rather have under Center, Howell or Wilson? That’s his point.
His deep sideline throws are the most accurate the league has seen, lately. His down the middle throws of middle distance seem like he's 7 foot tall. How popular can he get, can he handle fame?
Who isn't better than Zach Wilson?! Maybe Rodgers helps him out.
Better Than Zack Wilson?
THAT'S NOT SAYING MUCH!
😭
Sam is a dawg he could have easily had a bad game planer witch would allow him to struggle
Sam( air wolf) Howell
DA musta seen Sam's feet.
Peyton Manning wasn’t very good His first year!
No shit Sherlock !!
Tom Brady was the last pick. ?
Why is his mouth so big
