Loved watching this it brought back good memories, my dad would put a pound bet on for me and my brother and sister for the national I picked Seagram that year I can always remember how far back it was and it ran on to win, I was 10 years old then and now my 3 kids pick a horse for the national carry on the tradition.
i was 8 ... me and my mom both picked Seagram, it was my 1st GN win (Ive probably won 3 since !), i remember opening front door, running onto front lawn and skidding on my knees ! - £8 to an 8 yr old back then was like £30 today !!
Loved watching this again. I remember backing Seagram when it was 22/1 and thought "at least ive got my money back for coming 2nd" till Seagram found a second wind and started to get up. It was my first National winner , I just seemed to be getting second all the time . Bought a massive lump to my throat watching this again. Thank you uploader for bringing back happy memories
It is so lovely watching old videos of grand national winners, ive been so lucky as 2 have picked out quite a lot of winners & placed horses of this great race, this race will never die, it is the greatest steeplechase in the world & always will b. I remember backing Seagram, also i had Durham Edition & Auntie Dot, i pulled Auntie Dot out in the works sweepstake, i work at a care home & the old residents love 2 watch it & i always do the sweepstake 4 them & us the staff.
I remember this made headlines here in NZ due to Seagram's breeding. Back then there was no pay-TV and therefore no coverage of Northern Hemisphere racing. I love the fact that I can now stay up all hours of the night like a nutter watching the Grand National and Royal Ascot, and actually see international fields.
I saw Seagram win at Cheltenham before this race. The horse jumped from fence to fence and looked great. I promptly backed this horse for the grand national and told everyone I met to back it. Happy days. Well done, Seagram RIP.
What a horse garrison savannah was. Garry was my first ever bet, i was only 10 and got my late granda to put it on for me. It was this grand national. special horse
I backed Garrison Savannha in this. I saw it in the pub and I uncharacteristically cheered when Pitman's horse jumped the last clear, thinking my bet was safe. Then there was a snigger behind me as my shoulders slumped, head in my hands, Seagram had mugged him going for the line. That was a race that still haunts me all these years later. Especially, as I have never had a Grand National winner once in about forty years. That race was an omen and a curse.
The Grand Nationals were fantastic in the 90s. There seemed to be a good story behind ever winner. People are right about the coverage, the BBC were amazing back here, even better when Jim McGrath got involved, sadly it went downhill when Peter O'Sullevan retired. Tony O'Heir was awful. Love John Hamner. Everything about Grand Nationals here were awesome, likeable horses, fast pace, dramatic from start to finish and brilliant TV coverage. It's so sad to see what it's become now.
I backed Crammer and Rinus, but neither completed. A long way to go but thought Rinus was going particularly well at the time of his departure. Great memories and a great finish, was willing GS to hold on, so like Crisp in 1973...Thanks for posting.
THIS IS THE ONLY GRAND NATIONAL THAT I HAD FIRST AND SECOND, MY BEST WAS ROYAL ATHLETE IT WON AT 40-1 I GOT 66-1 ON THE MORNING, AND MY FAVOURITE HORSE OF ALL TIME WON FOR ME CORBIRE.
@Kate669803 My sis backed Seagram.. while i had Garrison. Consolation is I did win the following year with Party Politics. First time ive seen this race in 19 years since the actual day and the names come flooding back. To this day i still cant believe Garrison Savannah didnt win. The distinctive striped Orange top with the star. Love that horse
brilliant that u posted this thanks v much this is the 1st race i ever had a bet in i was nearly ten and had 3 horses in this 25p e/way and were docklands express garison savannah and seagram haha hence im a regular atthe bookies nowadays never had a result like tht since once again cheers for the post!!!
The first winner of the national id backed after he won at Cheltenham and sir Peter o sullevan doing commentary I miss him commentating he was the best made a 2 horse race sound exciting
How fitting it is to have a horse name Seagram, named after the company's sponsors at the time to win the Grand National. Who is still the last horse to win the Cheltenham Gold Cup and the Grand National in the same season as mentioned by commentator Sir Peter O Sullivan?
....I agree...to me it used to be the pinnacle of the sporting year...the Grand National....not any more......over the last few years the race has lost some of its character....its charisma if you like.....the commentators I associate with the race have gone.....the fences seem rather innocuous now......its sadly all become a bit flat...still we've got all these RUclips recordings to remind us of the race's halcyon days....
Luckily I backed Seagram. Ivan Straker - the chairman of Seagram refused to buy the horse. His rationale was: if it it loses I've saved my money, if it wins, the "free" advertising is priceless. A businessman I guess. Not a Grand National fan like us.
Seagram finished like a train, here, similar to Last Suspect, in 1985. Garrison Savannah's exertions in the Gold Cup, beating The Fellow by a short head, in a gruelling finish, probably caught up with him, right at the death...
Well done spelling Rough Quest right which is the only one you did. Don't think any of the ones you mentioned were lucky (I suppose Rough Quest had a small field).
Seagram also won the race after the national the year before when mr frisk won, I was in a queue to get my winnings, some bloke had him in a double with mr frisk, he was jumping up and down and screaming him home, was funny as hell.
to win the national you need to have a horse that stays 4and half miles seagram did garrissons savannah didnt . now its just a long distance chase, they,ve changed it so much
sorry have to disagree with u on julian wilsons commentary, he brought excitement to the national, bechers was his area, his commentaries in, 73,74, and especially 83 were excellent, made a few errors in 77, and he should not have been replaced in 92, he had a good 10 nationals left in him
not sure how you can say seagram was one of the worst winners - 4 and a half miles and 30 of the most demanding jumps anywhere in horse racing - granted that Garrison Savannah should have won - i agree that you need to have a bit of luck to win - but dont forget Crisp sould have beaten Red Rum in 1973 - he surely was a lucky horse that day?
Wow. What a run by Seagram. Watching it again. I didn't realise how much ground he made up on Garrison Savannah. Great win for Seagram 😊👌
Loved watching this it brought back good memories, my dad would put a pound bet on for me and my brother and sister for the national I picked Seagram that year I can always remember how far back it was and it ran on to win, I was 10 years old then and now my 3 kids pick a horse for the national carry on the tradition.
Fergie nice memorys!!
Exactly what my dad used to do for us good memories

I backed Seagram but felt sorry for Garrison Savannah. Brings back memories.

It was a brilliant race, lots of good memories. Was praying Garrison could do it, what a run from Seagram
"Rinus is down!" Classic call
I still urge 'Garry' home when i watch this... very heart breaking to watch
I like how Julian Wilson has a brain freeze on the name 'Golden Freeze' :)
Great race!! Great win!!!

It's terrible now. All the camera angles have been changed and the new announcers are awful.
I backed Crammer and Rinus, but neither completed. A long way to go but thought Rinus was going particularly well at the time of his departure. Great memories and a great finish, was willing GS to hold on, so like Crisp in 1973...Thanks for posting.

My only ever winner in the national! How can I get it right as a kid but not as a adult?
Amazing final stretch from Seagram.
DarthCipient magical!!
A true national style finish!!!.magical!! Seagram.dogged.kept at it!!!

Looked after garry when he was novice hurdler. Class act & so was the trainer.worked for some top trainers jenny was up there..
How fitting it is to have a horse name Seagram, named after the company's sponsors at the time to win the Grand National. Who is still the last horse to win the Cheltenham Gold Cup and the Grand National in the same season as mentioned by commentator Sir Peter O Sullivan?
It was Golden Miller in 1934
Nigel hawke was the jockey david barons trained paul nichols used ro ride for barons playschool great horse as well Great memories 😊
love watching the old grand nationals. does anyone know who is the oldest surviving winner or placed horse is now that miinnehoma has passed away?
Poor old Ballyhane was 1 of me favs back in tha day
The forgotten horse in 89 gold cup just creeping into it when falling
....I agree...to me it used to be the pinnacle of the sporting year...the Grand National....not any more......over the last few years the race has lost some of its character....its charisma if you like.....the commentators I associate with the race have gone.....the fences seem rather innocuous now......its sadly all become a bit flat...still we've got all these RUclips recordings to remind us of the race's halcyon days....
my first ever national winner
@FanaticFerrariFan completely agree, the coverage doesn't seem so "dramatic" as it used to be , it's certainly lost something these past few years
Even more so now. The controversy, the scrutiny, and the condemnation of the event is killing the appeal.
@Ali74 I also backed Seagram - made about £70 if I remember correctly - it was 19 years or so ago
It was my first bet on the National
My frist time bet picked Seagram glad came back to Winner
I actually backed seagram each way superb ride think l backed him each way seven or eight to one l think he was 😊
Luckily I backed Seagram. Ivan Straker - the chairman of Seagram refused to buy the horse. His rationale was: if it it loses I've saved my money, if it wins, the "free" advertising is priceless. A businessman I guess. Not a Grand National fan like us.

How many horses ran in the 1991 field?
@bigderekkeene Garrison Savannah was a majestic horse.. my first ever bet also. Never gonna forget him
hi do you have the 1992 grand national.thanks
afraid not, would like to see that myself
Well done spelling Rough Quest right which is the only one you did. Don't think any of the ones you mentioned were lucky (I suppose Rough Quest had a small field).
As a young man I backed auntie dot
Old Durham edition again
quite ironic as it was the last time the race was sponsered by seagram
Seagram also won the race after the national the year before when mr frisk won, I was in a queue to get my winnings, some bloke had him in a double with mr frisk, he was jumping up and down and screaming him home, was funny as hell.
Does anyone else think that Pitman went too soon on Garry? Maybe a more accomplished Jockey would have got him home.
to win the national you need to have a horse that stays 4and half miles seagram did garrissons savannah didnt . now its just a long distance chase, they,ve changed it so much
peter o sullivan puts his foot in it again, would have been great to see garrison do a golden miller, julian wilsons second bechers commentary oh dear
sorry have to disagree with u on julian wilsons commentary, he brought excitement to the national, bechers was his area, his commentaries in, 73,74, and especially 83 were excellent, made a few errors in 77, and he should not have been replaced in 92, he had a good 10 nationals left in him
My first ever bet in the national went on Garrison Savannah
exactly the same with me mate
@@bigderekkeene never mind...

Would enjoy all better if not tell winner before I watch it
Fair comment
Garry carried 12 stone. Seagram 10 stone.
Good shout...
