      I learned that the first exercise isn't too bad for me, but the arm circles -- oh my goodness. I have work to do!

  • @braddtatum
    @braddtatum 4 года назад +31

    Really love the arm circles! I have had pretty severe posture problems with lots of headaches and neck pain because of an overly developed chest from too much bench press abuse as a teenager. I am learning slowly how the mechanics work in the body haha after much desperation. Once the chest muscles take over the upper back muscles turn off and the neck gets stiff. So miserable.
    I love the arm circles because it's so light weight...almost every corrective exercise for the rounded shoulders I have tried results in immediate neck pain because my neck tried to control all the movements. I feel like moving to heavier resistance is a long way down the road.
    Thank you for your help!

    Wow! These exercises can do miracles. I've always found it counterintuitive to buy into the idea that "easy does it", but this is a major exception. Rather than trying to correct the posture at the gym which can easily cause further muscle imbalance I'll recommend this approach instead. Thank you!

    Btw, I thought of a variation to the first exercise where you can hold 2 nearly walls with your fingers and pull yourself. This gave my shoulders the maximum extension possible for me. But, this will work only when those 2 nearby walls have the wooden support 😅

    On the second one... One arm at a time can be better? Kind of isolating one arm/muscles at a time because when doing both at the same time could you could get a "bad" rythmic momentum in movement if you are kind of uneven in your shoulders?

    Thank you for the videos Matt and they are very helpful. The second exercise I had problems with here and cause lumbar pain. The stance seem to put too much pressure on the lumbar. Can you recommend how to adjust it or am I doing something wrong since this happens? Many thanks again for all the videos

    • @jdavis9092
      @jdavis9092 6 лет назад

      Ricky, you could potentially try a wider stance and do more of a partial squat when doing this one... Bend the knees and drop the butt just slightly while keeping the back straight until it feels more comfortable so it's not putting as much strain on your lower back...

    • @nervi2007
      @nervi2007 6 лет назад

      It just means you don't know how to lean over properly. That's really typical... When you bend you've got to feel the tension building in your butt, in the rear of your legs, but absolutely not in your lumbar spine. Try searching "hip flexion" on the net, when you pick something on the ground you gotta work with your hips, not with your knees. Best of luck !

    Thank you for this video. Would using an at home rower help? I'm 46 and my poor shoulder blades stick out and shoulders point forward. I noticed at an early age when I was cheering that I issues already standing up straight. My arms also don't straighten so I would have to invert them a bit in order to look straight to cheer. Now I have a significant curve in my lower back as pelvis sits back due to over compensation. I literally have to invert my arms out (Jesus arms) pull pelvis in with core tight in order to appear straight with shoulder blades not winging out in back. Ugh.

    Great video! *** Would you be able to do a video doing the same exercises for kyphosis/rounded shoulders, etc. but focusing on how to keep the head tucked back while doing them, since most people with this posture have a head-forward carriage. I find sometimes, people will do these exercises, but their head is still a foot in front of their shoulders...lol. They forget to line up the head with the shoulders while doing other exercises...that would be greatly appreciated!

    I have a question about the 2nd exercise. What if the back of my neck begins to hurt while doing this exercise? (I’m not sure if it is the working hard type of pain or bad type of pain). I made sure that my neck was in line with my upper back, but after doing the exercise for about 30 circles, it began to cause some pain where the base of the neck and the shoulders/upper back meet.

    • @braddtatum
      @braddtatum 4 года назад

      It would be the opposite of strengthening your back. It would be strengthening your chest. (Push-ups / Bench Press / Dips etc.) These would pull your shoulders forward and decrease back "flatness"
