Hey Mr. Shaddick first just want to say thanks for sharing the knowledge and now I put tight bond three and sinew on everything I just did a black locust bowl with tight bond3 and sinew on the back and then I put rawhide over it with EA 40 the past meets the future lol anywhere take care young man just wanted to say thanks
Great vid, thanks. Just started making a horn bow and wondered about TB2 instead of hide glue. I have made many laminated wood, bamboo bows with TB and never had a problem. And I like TB2’ waterproof nature. Have you ever used 1-1.5” wide long strips of tire inner tube to wrap the bow? You can get really good compression and glue doesn’t stick to it, and it is reusable. Any thoughts.Thanks
The only problem with that is the wetness in the sinew wouldn’t dry out. It has to get air to it to dissipate the moisture. It’s been awhile since I did this video. Now when I lay out the titebond saturated sinew, and press it out, I let it set with a fan on it until it’s surface dry, then press the excess moisture out with an absorbent cloth, then apply the bandages. On the current bow I’m crafting the bandages came off without sticking at all.
Loved the video. Does using titebond provide performance benefits as well or is the sinew just for back protection? I have never used sinew but i was under the impression thay hide glue was used because it for stretch amd thus provides increased cast if the bow is short enough. Sorry, i am from New Zealand and traditional bowyers are almost non existent
Sinewing using hide glue might slightly increase the tension strength of a bow, therefore increasing the cast, but not much. My purpose is to protect against breaking and keeping the reflex in the limbs, therefore maintaining cast. The fact that titebond 3 is water proof is a big plus, because hide glue can resoften if exposed to the rain too long.
Why were the sinew pieces so wide? I thought they were individual like thread. I have a separation on the belly of a black locust bow. Think I'll try that tight bond trick and some deer sinew for wrap. Have you ever tried j b weld on any repairs? Wish you'd put out a video on how you prepare your sinew to use. I have only used deer sinew from the deers legs that I've saved.
Sorry for just now answering your comment. The sinew threads in tendon doesn’t run straight. It crisscrosses back and forth. That’s why it’s hard separate into long threads. The concept of collecting bundles of threads came from pretty far back. You can hammer it and simply pull outwards on it until you have a wide crisscrossed band. I apply the whole strip. Some times I’ll pull it into two strips if I need a more narrow strip. Thanks for your comment
I probably don’t keep up with RUclips messages like I should. Concerning arrow shelf materials on my Osage selfbows. If is beaver tail, I always use what I use on my handle. It’s probably not the best material but my shelves are pretty narrow. Seems to work ok. I’d send you a pic but there’s no option. Are you on Facebook. I guess I could check. I appreciate you interest in my work. You do some really nice work yourself.
I am curious, have you ever tried a slightly watered down warm titebond 3 bath that the sinew could be soaked in and then just squeeze the excess out before applying to the bow? It might save some effort in the embedding process. You may have already tried it and moved on I was just curious. The backing process is almost witchcraft to me. lol
Thankyou Forrest---so commercial synthetic glue CAN be used to bond sinew to wood --them Koreans have a secret fish glue mixture thats top secret ---!

It’s way more water proof. Will not soften in prolonged exposure to rain like hide glue.
