The design always reminds me of the Boris Vallejo spaceships on Fredrick Pohl book covers like “Gateway”. Not precisely the same design, I admit. I love the fact these ships have a design aesthetic which is completely unique to itself. There isn’t really anything else in Star Wars like them. They’re pretty good on the table in Armada.

The only issue I take with the automated functions of the ship is how expensive it would be - especially for the Rebellion. Not having to hire as many crewmen is a good thing, yes, but there is a point at which the initial cost of the ship can outweigh several years' worth in wages; a price-tag that grows exponentially the more advanced the ship becomes. Smaller automated ships make sense because of just that - they're small, they take far fewer resources to produce. Anything larger than a Corvette really needs to rely more on more traditional crewed systems, with automated *subsystems.* The AI can be relegated to minor, repetitive tasks that would otherwise bore the crew or result in numerous inefficiencies due to wasted time.
As an example from the real world, the Nimitz-Class aircraft carriers the US is fielding are heavily automated, yet they still require around 3/4 the crew of the previous classifications. The Gerald R. Ford-Class costs $6 billion US per unit - the Nimitz costs $12 billion per unit. The price of even a tiny amount of combat-effective automation can easily double the price of a large vessel - further improvements in automation may triple the price, and so on.

I'm not sure I'd call the Assault Frigate Mark II a beautiful failure. I see it as a sort of (potentially desperate) stopgap measure in order to mitigate the damage large Imperial ships could do to more important vessels in the Rebel fleet. Sort of like a tank in an MMORPG.
EDIT: Also, I just really need to state that I absolutely LOVE the Dreadnought-class Cruiser that this ship is derived from. I think the Dreadnaught could be a formidable opponent even in modern Star Wars. It just needs a bit of refitting. Modern systems, and maybe a bit of a redesign to make it more efficient.

I’d imagine that there were less Mk. 2’s than Mk. 1’s and that contributed to it fading from use and memory more quickly. The Mk. 1 being an after market modification of the Dreadnought, a very old but _very_ common and effective design likely made it cheaper to produce and easier to field in large numbers. Making many Mk. 2’s from scratch was likely a costlier endeavor.

I'd wager the MkII was built in a hurry, and even though it was good it wasn't meant to last more than a decade. Kinda like how Liberty Ships in WWII were made just strong enough to complete one or two voyages before being scrapped. It was decommissioned rapidly as the Galactic Civil War ended, more shipyards were captured or turned to the Rebels, and better and more structurally sound vessels could be acquired.

I presumed that, as Mk.2 use Mon Calamari shielding, it started to enter production right about the same time Mon Calamari fully joined the Alliance, who contributed several Mon Calamari starship into Rebel service at the same time. This put the Assault Frigate Mk.II in an odd position, as it's way too big for guerilla warfare to compare to Nebulon-B (seriously, this thing is the size of Venator-class), but also not powerful enough for straight-up capital ship combat like Mon Calamari cruisers, resulting in a very limited production run, as most resources were poured toward either the bigger ships or the smaller but quicker ships.

It’s an interesting ship to be sure. I have conflicting opinions on this ship. Naturally in Empire at war, the shields if used correctly can really make it last a while. However I was always underwhelmed by its firepower...or lack of firepower. It’s not a bad ship but it never made its way into my fleets in much numbers.
As for design, it’s not bad, but my heart rests with the dreadnaught

  • @redshirt0479
    @redshirt0479 4 года назад +3

I think the stats are good, but the design is horrible. Especially compared to the Dreadnought Heavy Cruiser that spawned this class.
I think we see the design fade away because the two things about the class that set it apart, enhanced shields and automation, can be integrated into older ship designs too with a decently extensive retrofit
Like the retrofit needed to take an old Dreadnought frame down to the keel and build a Mark I Assault Frigate.
This could also help explain the various subclasses of the Mark I we see.
Although even then, that isn't too necessary. We know that the base Dreadnought frame can also be automated fairly extensively and it likely wouldn't take much to mount the improved shields, weapons, and engines from the later classes.
Which is a good reason why we still see Dreadnoughts in service so many years later.
The older frames are like the real world B-52 or DC-3. Really good at the job they were designed for and easy enough to just pump out upgrades and variants to keep up with technology and no real need to totally replace.

    • @Eatmydbzballs

I'm pretty sure that the advantage of Mass drivers is that they either:
      A) Pass through most shields.
      or
      B) Take advantage of the fact that most ships fire turbo-lasers so enemy ships usually have all their power into their ray shields and only limited power into their particle shields.

Anyone else like myself that would rather have The Kandosi II and their missile's/torpedo's and turbo lasers over it the combination of Ion cannons and turbo lasers? With the Missiles/Torpedo's you can shoot through shields and take down the generator. With Ion Cannons you have to wait for them to drain the shields then take the shield generators down. In battle time is survival. Like most Rebel ships the MKII Assault Frigate needed to be versatile hence why it wasn't a straight up dedicated capital ship armed to the teeth with turbo lasers, missiles/torpedo's, Ion Cannons, and Point Defense systems. So was it as much of a failure or perfect for the time it was created? For the New Republic which can make ships dedicated to straight up/out right slug fights with other capital ships The MKII Assault Frigate would be a good support/troop/cargo ship.

The MK-2 Assault Frigate was impressive in appearance but other then its shields and automation I don't see much of a improvement over the MK-1. The MK-2 was a much larger target then the original dreadnought or the MK-1 assault frigate to the point that it stands out much more in the field of battle. The kind of reworking of the ships hull is likely the reason these ships fell out of use. It would take a lot of time and money to rework a ship to that point.
I would have liked to see a MK-3 assault frigate that would have been blended the two designs more cleanly and given you something the automation, Mon Cal shields and better fire power while not turning the ship into a blow fish.

Generally agree with the conclusion. The Mk 1 doesn't seem to have had any specialized components and could likely be built/refitted in any shipyard that had the capability to do so. The Mk 2 looks like it was a far more extensive rebuild than the Mk 1 and required specialized components (Mon Calmari shields) and more automation; and probably fewer shipyards that were capable of doing this level of rebuild were in the Alliance. So hypothetically if this is accurate the Mk 2 is more expensive to refit, more complicated to do so, and doesn't have that huge an improvement over the Mk 1.
The Mk 2 has better shields than the Mk 1 so is more survivable, but less weaponry. The Dreadnaught refit is less out of necessity (it's not effective compared to a normal light cruiser in it's weight class) but moreso as the Rebellion had lots and lots of Dreadnaughts. So often they would be the major front line capital ship in Rebel fleets which did not have heavy cruisers but where the Rebellion could field ships that could engage an Imperial battle line.
So after Endor when the Rebellion has many more shipyards under thier control, they also have access to more effective light cruisers so there's less need to go through the extensive refit period to produce the Mk 2, and the Mk 1 to some degree remains a mainstay just as they have a huge number of Dreadnaughts in service and they have greater capability sto upgun them.

I am repeatedly irked with Star Wars' addiction to asymmetry, exposed bridges, variable geometry (particularly when it adds nothing to the function), and thrust lines that does NOT pass through the center of mass.
