Allways thought it was a missed opportunity for these ships not to be used as smaller carriers by bringing rebel fighters into battle on racks like we sometimes see TIE fighters. What would look like a group of slow, unarmed transports could quickly scramble a squadron of fighters on short notice.
In star wars Rebellion game, they were a decent, cheap anti-starfighter ship and although other transports could move more men, these were armed while the bigger ones were not.
It was also used in battle for electronic warfare. They were used to jam the enemy and also helped with coordinating attacks amongst the squadrons of fighter
I would feel sorry for being a captain on one of these ships during the Battle of Endor. The captain would ask "Why am I being sent into a combat zone in a ship that has little value on the battlefield against Imperial warships that can tear my ship a new one?" the reply back "Why simple reasons captain. We need the Imperials to shoot you guys to help provide something else for the Imperials to shoot at instead of our capital ships." In which the captain of the transport says "Alright that.......wait what?"
Gr-75. Cool ship. Also we have an ion cannon on Hoth, so dont worry about flying one towards any star destroyers..we have nearly infinite directions to flee, but we'll just fly right to 'em.
Something that a few of my readers came up with during a discussion was that the reason they're taken into combat is because of those sensor jammers they carry being used to disrupt Imperial gunnery. It's an interesting idea to say the least and certainly just as plausible as the ones you've proposed here, I rather like the idea of them dropping explosive containers on Imperial targets though I admit.
I allways thought a cool potential use for this ship would be to carry a bunch of vulture droids on racks hidden under that armor. So that whenever the fleet comes under attack, you could quickly launch a swarm of droids to intercepte any TIE fighters and stall them long enough to escape. That way, you wouldn't have to rely as much on the limited number of manned starfighters and carriers the Alliance had.
The most logical point for sending lightly armed cargo ships into the middle of a battle would be for electronic countermeasures. If equipped for that mission profile, they would be able to disrupt detection of and/or accuracy of enemy fire at Rebel ships.
For some reason, I feel like you could almost modify them into a starfighter carrier ship role. You just have to do some modifications to the cargo storage area.
I got ideas for some uses for this vessel! Use it in the LAAT Carrier role of transporting vehicles around an an AT-TE walker getting dropped off on an enemy capital ship. Or, it's used as a heavy bomber like the MG-100 StarFortress SF-17 or as a minefield ship that can deploy mines to either trap TIE Fighters or to protect the fleet's flank...
I know you uploaded this a while ago but I’m a little confused on were the cockpit is, I’ve figured it was the “command pod” but in Star Wars battlefront the command pod seems way to small to even hold a person, but in clone wars it appears that it is very large. If you know please tell me I never understood that.
Interesting adding the Gozanti in the comparison pics. Iirc, not sure about Canon but in Legends this holds true, the Gozanti "Cruiser" wasn't designed as a transport but as a convoy escort. Sort of an older, slower and smaller Imperial Lancer corvette since it was armed with mostly laser cannons. As an additional possible role in fleet actions, Electronic Warfare is a possibility.
Just a little food for thought... The GR-75's role in fleets appears to be that of a fleet support ship, assigned to a larger and more important target. To understand the GR-75's combat mission, we need to understand the ships that they were assigned to support. The MC-80 cruisers are a good example. If the original Legends canon is considered, the alliance did not have many capital ships that were purpose built warships. The original MC-80s were civilian liners which had been retrofitted and pressed into service when their Mon-Cal crews rebelled and defected to the Alliance. Since they weren't originally warships, we can assume that essential military equipment was probably jammed inside the hull wherever there was space. This type of modification would have been messy and inefficient due to the need to do it both quickly and with generally inadequate resources that could be "liberated" from legitimate sources. Additionally, there probably wouldn't have been room to get everything into a protected position inside the hull. These ships were going to have to face Victory, Imperial, and eventually Imperial II Star Destroyers in any major engagement, and be protected enough to survive the engagement. Enter the GR-75. As a dedicated cargo vessel, the GR-75 was not well suited to large scale combat, but when properly outfitted as an electronic warfare, signal jammer, or deflector screening ship, I feel that the GR-75 could have played an important role in protecting the larger ships. If you purpose built the cargo containers into ECM suites, capital decoys, Large scale deflector arrays, and power generators, a small screening force of GR-75s would effectively become "smart armor" for the ships that they were tasked with protecting. The ships could be deployed to provide additional protection for particularly vulnerable sections of the larger vessel, relying on the latter's firepower and their own enhanced defensive systems for survivability, and redeploying as required when the screening force lost a ship.
And now I'm wondering if the ion cannon version would make a good flagship for a small pirate fleet. Maybe if the interior was modded to be a carrier for boarding shuttles and snub-fighters.
Please do the nova courier. Also you forgot the star fighter carrier variant which could hold up to 6 x-wings. I would’ve used the carrier variant to house 24 Tri droid star fighters.
I personally think they could modify the crane on the GR-75, maybe some magnetic clamps/adding or using another ship's track beam and use the supplies to repair damaged capitol ships and starfighters.
This is actually the best video yet and most other aren´t bad either ;). Fun Fact: In Real Life, Container Ship uses TEU = Twenty Foot Equivalent Unit. Twenty Foot is the standard size of a container an can have a max gross mass of about 24 Metric tons, so 19000/24 =791.Order66 TEUs, compared to 3,000- 14,500 of today´s large cargo ships (the big variance are because they need to fit into canals, and some don´t, so they can be bigger).
I get that its good for carrying cargo and supplies from planet to planet. As for a combat role I would like to think it also served as a multi role ship that refuels smaller fighters when needed, a light medical ship ( since they already distinguished which ship is a medical frigate) and of course to use its sensors/ jammers to act as a battle force multipler in their space battles. I think it would be most suited as a refueling ship in combat due to its thick armor/ sensor jammers to protect/ hide it also it was stated that it can carry fuel and quickly dock with other ships.
4:45 Spacedock: Again the Rebels have bought a whole load of arm- unarmed GR-75 transports to a giant battle. Alastair: Why? What do they do? Is it in case the Rebels need a snack and that's where they all are.
I think I know another reason why it could be seen on the front lines in space battles. Damage sponges. It would draw fire away from more valuable warships, probably sacrificing itself to do so. But, that's still multiple shots that it stops from hitting the larger, more valuable ships.
I got some ideas of how the Rebels could have use this thing... 1. If your a fan from Halo, (Master Chief) you will probably recognize this one... A rebel ODST Drop Pods 2. Modified into a LAAT/c role... The GR-75 can now carry AT-TEs for Boarding Imperial starships... 3. Cargo pods that can hold a Republic Interceptor TX-130 Saber-class fighter tank ready for deployment... ( This seems like the most terrifying aspect for any Imperial ground forces... Rebel reinforcements with some serious firepower... The Republic Interceptor TX-130 Saber-class fighter tank would probably have a reputation similar to the TIE Mauler's where it sparks fear among the enemy...) I think the Saber Tank's armament could potentially obliterate any Imperial ground forces...
I could never understand how in the old canon these were the troop transports before the U-wing. The U-wings made more sense. But seeing all the crates at the bottom made me wonder how troops were supposed to be shipped in there.
It only has a Few Laser Cannons, and it’s super slow. What you can do to turn a GR-75 into a fully reliable ship is by taking out that old Class 4 hyperdrive and adding in a much better class 3 to class 1 and adding extra laser cannons and an additional shield generator for good measure.
Recently i started wondering if they'd make good missile trucks - imagine replacing all those cargo containers with seeker missile boxes like the kind the Preventers use in one of the scenes in Gundam Wing Endless Waltz. Combine that with a squadron of Y-wings with datalink avionics/sensors upgrades to paint targets for the missiles, and you've got a relatively cheap way of spamming a capital ship engagement with Macross missile blossoms.
I feel like it’s combat roles where we’ll explained in this video but it could also have been fan anti fighter role/ fire absorption because of its rounded hull. You could make a massive shield of these things around a bomber squad do the ordinance could land without risk of loosing any bombers
Using some of the internal cargo space to mount anti starfighter cannons and use the ships as a pseudo screening or picket ship role like the CR80 and CR 90s would to help Capitol ships against fighters. Could help explain their presence during battles.
The bomber role sounds awesome and pretty smart too even though the ship has weak armor m. Using them as troop carriers seems unlikely since rogue one introduced the u-wing
The modules themselves could contain defensive equipment (such as additional shield generators or self-contained anti-star fighter blaster cannon turrets or missile launchers) or offensive equipment (such as a median turbolaser battery). It also seems like the modular racks could be replaced by starfighter launch racks. It seems like a couple squadrons of smaller star fighters, without hyperspace capabilities such as the Alpha-3 Nimbus-class V-wing starfighter could fit in nicely and be launched both through the bow and the keel of the ship. This, of course would make launching the star fighters, once the theater is reached, extremely crucial as the star fighters would be very vulnerable to the destruction of this very weakly armed and armored ship. This carrier method would also go against the battle doctrine of the rebel alliance, which relied almost entirely on hyperspace-capable star fighters for quick hit-and-run attacks. Having to gather up the fighters before making the jump to hyperspace, at the end of the battle, would again make the whole operation very vulnerable.
2 other non canon variants. A: forward section contains nothing but cannons b: from stem to stern traveling Shield generators . this is waht I think the rotj version was. IT's shield generated could be big enough to surround the capital ships. So that the imperials would have 2 shields to go through, this ship's and the capital ships just to get tothe capital ship.
I like the idea that the reason the rebels would bring these into battles like battle of endor. was to use them as target saturation. Like literal shields against ship fire. They were so cheap. They would easily be Droid controlled so no loss of life when they were destroyed.
Almost anything with engines *should* be a very potent weapon. I wouldn't even bother loading the canisters with explosives, just fill 'em with duracrete or even just use metallic scrap. Anything dense. Then make a long run-up on sublight engines, and drop 'em all in a cluster as fast as you can cycle 'em out. It's gonna rain hard.
Tender ships of course, but those would be smarter deployed a bit further back and with upgraded Shields and hyperdrives. Perhaps a Model with torpedoes launched from modified containers and hidden turbolasers or massive shield generators int he containers to act as a wall for the MS ships?
Honestly, why couldn't those cargo containers be filled with anti Starfighter missiles? They could act like cheap vertical launch systems, as we see on modern warships. This would provide an effective area defence screen.
I always assumed the GR-75's were used for a plethora of different roles. For the ones in the movies either transports, medical or anti star fighter. My guess a mix of all. Or as auxiliary support.
The possibility of replacing the containers with bombs reminds me of fitting light mechs in Battletech with as many rocket launchers as I can get. Sure, it's a one-shot wonder, but that doesn't matter if the enemy is already dead.
It took 3 years but its worth it

it has a modular form where some act as armor and troop carrier's, a medical bey, and an anti-starfighter variant that has only point defense weapon's against starfighter's
basically, make them like the combat versions were made in empire at war
50 MGLT is around 1436 G, I think.
Correction: In Legends the GR-75 was named in the West End Games Star Wars Sourcebook back in 87-88.
SecretShopKeep West End Games did great work back then.
Hell yeah they did. It's a crime that the WEG designers are not legendary among the SW community- the Intradictor, Carrick, Strike Cruiser, Skipray and many other designs were created or realized by them.
I'd like to see those people honored.
1) Install loads of turbolasers firing straight ahead.
2) Connect them either to power cells of to auxiliary reactor
3) Aim straight ahead
OR
1) Make cockpit detachable
2) Add more engines
3) Load hull with explosives
4) Aim
Why do I love attacking these in Star Wars Battlefront
cuz theyre unarmed, war criminal style if you know what i mean
I might start a scratch build of one of these and this will be very helpful.
Here's where the fun begins
I love this ship.
The GR-75s used by Jinata Security had several laser cannon turrets attached to the hull, so the Rebel version could've had those as well.
the rebels are known for many things, Running away, Plot armor, modifying things, and being stupidly OP in Empire at War Forces of Corruption.....
@@aurorathearcticwolf4243 still not as broken as the consortium
Guilherme Velhote oh no
Guilherme Velhote the rebels are STUPIDLY OP like CR-90 beats the Crusader in a 1v1
The unsung heroes of the rebellion
In rebels Iron Squadron used cargo pods as weapons.
It was also used in battle for electronic warfare. They were used to jam the enemy and also helped with coordinating attacks amongst the squadrons of fighter
I was wondering what this ship's for. Thanks for clearing thing up.
4th variant: Gallofree Battleship (oversized GR-75 with DELETE EVERYTHING SUPERLASER!)
Great video, the GR-75 the Liberty ships, and Victory ship of the Rebels with out them they would have lost.
Liked the rebel paint job mod from battlefront
For some reason, I feel like you could almost modify them into a starfighter carrier ship role. You just have to do some modifications to the cargo storage area.
I got ideas for some uses for this vessel! Use it in the LAAT Carrier role of transporting vehicles around an an AT-TE walker getting dropped off on an enemy capital ship. Or, it's used as a heavy bomber like the MG-100 StarFortress SF-17 or as a minefield ship that can deploy mines to either trap TIE Fighters or to protect the fleet's flank...
The best explanation for these ships being in a battle is that they're operating as some sort of sensor jamming or electronic warfare ship
This ship could use some upgrades to it. Though I will say using it for transport and even a fireship was quite smart.
Yeah that ion cannon attachment was cool
I cant help but speculate that a few of these where repurposed as dedicated hangers for starfighters. It just makes sense for a ship so large.
It was mentioned in rebel files that they were used as fire support and they do have laser cannons so maybe anti-starfighter
Please do the nova courier. Also you forgot the star fighter carrier variant which could hold up to 6 x-wings. I would’ve used the carrier variant to house 24 Tri droid star fighters.
During the Battle of Endor, they were used as Fireships.
The greatest ship in the Rebel Armada.

Spacedock: Again the Rebels have bought a whole load of arm- unarmed GR-75 transports to a giant battle.
Alastair: Why? What do they do? Is it in case the Rebels need a snack and that's where they all are.
I had the idea that they could be shield projectors as well- so like tugs floating close to the bigger ships to reinforce their shielding somehow...
A rebel ODST Drop Pods
I think these were modelled after the Liberty Ships that delivered supplies to England in WW2.
finally an expleantion why the rebels had these ships in battles without carrying any weapons
You could make a massive shield of these things around a bomber squad do the ordinance could land without risk of loosing any bombers
love how the standard starwars weight measurement is just a dewback.
A: forward section contains nothing but cannons
b: from stem to stern traveling Shield generators . this is waht I think the rotj version was.
Thank go this video cleared stuff up for me😅 I always wondered “why tf would the rebels always bring their cargo to huge battles with them!?”
