My grandmother made me a crazy quilt years ago (35 years) and I loved it so much. I used it on my bed for so long about all that was left was ties and fabric all most all the stitching had come lose. I was about to get rid of it when a real good friend of mine was in an accident and broke her leg. I ended up taking care of her during that time and she told me to bring her the quilt. She spent weeks restitching the quilt by hand. That was about 5 years ago and its been back on my bed ever since. It is the most comfortable quilt I have ever had.
You brought back a very fond memory of me sitting and watching my great Aunty Ivy sewing something or other and doing a blind hem stitch JUST LIKE YOU did!!! I used to sit and watch her when I was a school girl, and we'd chat about her life and all the things she had done. She would tell me stories of working in the tailoring shop that made the coronation clothing for King Edward, I believe. (it would have been around 1912-14, as she left home at a very early age, around 15, and that was one of her first jobs.) Anyway, thank you SO very much for sharing something that evoked such a fond memory of my Aunty.....she went to Heaven 2 days after her 100th birthday!! 1896-1996!! tootles, Della xoxo
Well, my dear, you can just get that thought RIGHT out of your noggin!!!! (I have watched OODLES of your vids and ne'er a tedious moment in the bunch!!) I want you to hold one hand out and give it a good fwap with the other, as that is very naughty to think so little of your wonderful self, so NO more of this "I'm boring" biz...............Your fans will be keeping tabs, so DON'T think you can get away with it!!!! ;-) Lots of hugs right back atcha!!! tootles, Della xoxo
I used to love watching my mother make quilts. I have seen her make one of these tie quilts except she tied at the corners of the blocks. She also made a wedding ring quilt with tiny pieces about the size of a US quarter. She made it before any of us kids were born and she worked on it all winter one year. She got so wrapped up in it that housework and cooking sort of went by the wayside. Men pretty much stayed out of the kitchen back then and my dad used to tease her by telling us kids, in her presence, that he nearly starved to death that winter.
So glad I found your video. I've been cutting triangles (dang), because I remember my grandma's quilt. Then I realized, how the heck am I going to sew a bunch of triangles together! You saved the day! Many thanks!
I made my baby sister's grandson a tie quilt this summer ,she said it was beautiful too.i like your quilt to .I'm now getting ready to Finish my quilt of many colors .
This is what quilting is really about, using up all those worn out clothes and making them into stories about your life. That's how they were made back in the day. No doubt there are beautiful quilts out there but life isn't about being perfect, it's about the love you put into whatever you make. Thanks for the videos and stories about your life. Have good days.
I would love to come and spend a week or so with your family and just soak up all of that wonderful teaching. I have M.S. so some things are more challenging, but I love how you teach. I am an empty nester. We are trying to learn to live again.
Thank you so much Bev! There's a family quilt that's been handed down to me...it's wore completely out from years of use and I'm wanting to make another like it but didn't know where to start because all the quilts I've looked at were nothing like what I have. Yours is the closest I see to it. I'm so excited I can't wait to start!! God bless.
I absolutely love this woman!! I would love to be able to meet you. I am finishing my very first quilt...nothing crazy just a black and white square by square quilt and I've been looking for a great video on making quilts. I always watch your videos because they are so simple and to the point. I've watched so many videos on how to tie my quilt and it's been insane!! Tie this way, tie that way...don't do this, and that...but it's just a quilt that's going to be used to cuddle...I know my quilts are going to be loved even if I make a mistake. So...my advise to any other beginners is HAVE FUN and enjoy it!! I'm pretty sure no one was using fancy rulers and things back when quilting started...and they seemed to last longer as well. I love to make my quilts and I can't wait to email a picture to you. Thanks for the awesome videos and sharing your talents with us!!
WOW!!! What have my tattoos got to do with ANYTHING...ASIDE from the fact that YOU don't LIKE them?? I do not need to justify my tattoos or life choices to you...My Tattoos have never hindered me getting a job and never bothered anyone but you..You are judging me..no one else..YOU..all based on art work on my body?? I don't drink alcohol..smoke cigarettes..we raise most of our own food and live very traditionally...YET You say "Here she is a grown woman, and into this nice, wholesome hobby like SEWING, and yet she has tattoos?? And she makes videos of herself showing them like it's nothing??? Sheesh." So all I see..is everything I stand for is ruined in YOUR eyes..because I have tattoos? That it attracts the wrong kind of people? I think young lady..you may have hit the nail on the head..because anyone ELSE who watches my channel ( for all the RIGHT reasons) Once they get to know me...never even SEE them anymore..and many people..want to know the story behind them..BECAUSE they KNOW there is one. But you? YOU just close your eyes to all the love and friendship on my channel...and JUDGE me for my tattoos..I will pray for you...Because if my tattoos are all that you see...then you should look elsewhere for a channel that fits your narrow, judgmental outlook on life!
+OurHalfAcreHomestead Wow!!!!... is all I can say safely at the moment. I have tattoos and I absolutely love showing them! As a matter of fact if I didn't love my tattoos I would've gotten them in places where no one would be able to see them. Do tattoos bother me?? HELL NO!! (excuse my language) First of all outside appearances aren't important at all! I think it's so great to see that there are more people quilting these days besides the stuck up Bradford wives! I never thought that anyone's tattoos could affect the outcome of a quilt or project!!! LOL. I honestly have never heard anything so outrageous before. I swear it would be hilarious if you would do a video with your arms covered in stick on tattoos LOL( just for an inside joke) You made quilting look so fun and free that I actually decided to try it out! I'm so glad I found your videos a while back! I look forward to watching and learning more from you in the future :)
+cindybin2001 As for tattoos I think they are awesome! They allow people to express themselves the way they want! She is an awesome teacher and quilter and her having tattoos just make me feel that much more connected to her. There should never be a certain LOOK required for art or talent. You may not realize that your words are very shallow and mean...but they are! To be honest I would be ashamed to know that I seemed that shallow. I have many tattoos and they don't change who I am or what I can be. Like I said I am not calling you a bad person because I don't know you at all but you really have to sit back and look at the way life is these days and pick your battles! I'm sure if she had 666 and devil signs all on her forehead then I may not like her channel as much...but then again I'm not on her channel for church conversation or life lessons...I'm here because she has great advice on many things, and SHE HAS AWESOME PERSONALITY! The only down fall is that I don't have the chance to know her personally! That's what is wrong with people now days is thinking different is always bad. I want my children to grow up knowing that they can be anything you want to be no matter how different they seem. The only thing I won't watch is lesbian/gays kissing on a channel...no matter how great they seem to sew! But that doesn't mean that I think it would be right for me to go to their channel and make a rude comment to them or someone else for having a different opinion. If you don't like something in life it's best to just avoid it!! Do yourself a favor and don't make yourself seem so mean and judgmental. You may even want to go a little further and go get a tattoo. LOL :)
I have always wanted to make a quilt. My great grandmother used to make & sell them & I have one she made. She also made bonnets...Maybe this will motivate me to get started. Thanks for sharing!!!
I love you ❤️ . You are helping me learn things that I didn’t learn from my mom or grandma . You make me feel like I can actually do this!! Thank you for being so awesome 😘
Very nice! It reminds me of quilts my granny used to make out of our old clothes. I wish I had learned more from her but I wasn't really interested when I was young. I'm glad there are people like you out there to help us learn these things now that we know better!! Have a wonderful day.
Awesome! This version is so unpretentious!! I love that. And the quilt looks so soft. I’m making one for my nephew. First time making a quilt. I may check in with you if I have any questions. Thanks so much for sharing! ❤️✌️❤️
This was fun to watch. I've done quilting with a machine and ties with yarn, and by hand. Love doing them and giving them to family members. It's been a while, but I started crocheting blankets for my grandbabies...newest one still is due his this Christmas...but I think I'll be doing some quilts, too, after watching this. I'd forgotten how satisfying it is to do them. Thanks.
I've only just started quilting, and this looks so simple (not easy, just un-complex). This will definitely be my next project! Thanks Bev!!! (I made a lattice quilt top, and my corners are crisp and it looks great - but I've been procrastinating on actually getting the quilting part done because it terrifies me. I still plan to quilt that one. But this tied method makes me breathe easy!! So I will make the same blocks you made for my next one.)
Thankyou Mrs! I have made hand-tied quilts before but not the invisible stitching. I was never taught how. And now I know this one and I don't have to use a zigzag.
Thanks for the many useful tips. I especially liked the added instruction on the blind stitching while you did the binding. I never knew how to do that stitch properly before now. Thank you again.
So happy to find your channel!! So happy to see that someone quilts very similar to me!! I reuse what I can when I can. I also use blankets as batting. Either ones I reuse or buy at thrift shops. Much cheaper this way!! Also sheets do make great backing!! Many times cheaper too. Used, or on sale they're cheaper than buying fabric by the yard. I do some machine quilting, but not always. I sure can't afford to have mine done on a long arm. Anyways! Thank you, and good to know I am not the only one that likes to quilt old school style.
So? I spent good money on these tattoos..why on EARTH would I want to cover them up? So I don't OFFEND your sensitivities? you came to the wrong place!
Yes! Thank you Helen---and thank YOU, too. (my head is still smarting from the slap I gave myself) I've made a few quilts over the years, and the bindings were so much work--this is wonderful!!!!
Bev, I've just found your site thru noreen's kitchen. Nice to watch a fellow Canadian. Mom and I truely enjoyed watching your videos. This one brought back many memories for her, as a child 80 years ago watching her mother. I remember my grandma with the big warm tied quilts. It makes me want to start using my scraps and making such a lovely gift. These remind me of the amish quilts at the amish Mennonite auctions. Thanks for the lessons. will we be watching and giving you 2 thumbs up..
My grand mother used to make quilts with the fabric coming from men's clothing when a man had his pants shortened to fit him. One of the warmest quilt I remember. The top was made from the cut off legs of mens suit pants, the liner was an old blanket and backing was the fabric cut from the men's pants. I don't know where the quilt ended up but I would like to have. Both Mom and Granny are gone.Mom in 2003, and Granny passed in 2007. She out lived all her girls but left the 2 boys.
Another way of putting on the binding is to fold it over and, from the top, "stitch in the ditch" by machine. You can't see any stitching from the top and it's very quick! Thank you!
Thanks Bev, for the spark of fond, warm memories of sitting with my Nan, curled up watching The Partrige Family and Little House . One day I just might try to make one of these comfy blankets. Keep up the older and the new videos... I'm fairly new sub, but enjoy your experiences and advice.
You look like such a pro doing this as with everything you put your hand to. I could imagine dragging that quilt around my shoulders and snuggling into it - I bet its so cosy. Fabulous! Poo
OMG! I have no idea what I was thinking. I just assumed you had to buy or some how luck into some "special batting" for the center of a quilt. It never dawned on me to reuse a blanket or a flannel sheet. First let me say that I have never sewn a thing in my life. Well, there was that one time I sewed a button on my husbands work shirt so tight (I didn't want it to fall off again) that he couldn't button it. So with no knowledge I shall attempt to make a quilt out of the bags of clothes I was going to donate. The coffee stained blanket that was going to the dog bed will now be repurposed into the quilt guts. I just love barreling in with absolute ignorance for it includes no rules for me to break. Mrs. Volfie, you are the absolute best and continue to inspire every day folks just like me. I fully expect to see you continuing to whip up things from your rocker in your 90's *wink*
This is a great way to use up scraps. My sister taught me how to quilt & this is the first pattern she taught me.she called it Split Rail. I have made many different patterns since then using sheets and blankets for linings. I really enjoyed watching your video on this. By the way how is your rug coming along? I'm making my own frame also by watching Howies instructions.
Since the batting you used in this quilt is a blanket, this doesn't need to be tied nearly this much. It won't stretch or shift like batting. My grandma uses blankets for her batting as well and she does two or three tacks in the middle of the quilt and that's it.
Very good video thank you for sharing I hope my first quilting experience is successful and I'll definitely refer to your video for tying it, thanks again
This is how i learned to make quilts. Recycling the old for the inside , back is usually a sheet if not just the fabric that matches the closest sometimes putting two fabrics together in the back to cover a scrappy looking with all colors of the rainbow. Too bad girls now a days have to have it all nee from the fabric store. Right now im working on a denim quilt i have been stashing denim since my kids were in elementary cause cant get many blocks from smaller jeans. Just wondering if the invisible stitch will hold the denim and especially since we use our quilts everyday just like you and Mr. Volfie and family. I wish girls nowadays would appreciate this. I did make my new daughter in law her first rag/scrappy quilt from my sons her husbands old clothes and some remnants and all kinds of colorful fabrics i had in my stash and used an old but still very sturdy wool blanket i had put away many years ago and used two types of fabrics in the back one burgundy red and Japanese red/blue vintage i was given too by an old sewing buddy that started to de stash cause she is tired. Wish i could show you and darned it allot so it will last her. But i didn't bind it , why cause im having surgery on my left arm and it was too heavy . Just over stitched it and lots of darning maybe some day ill bind it. LOVE YOUR WORK BEVERLY THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS WONDERFUL NEE BLOCK YOU JUST TAUGHT ME. I will start making them and stashing them. 😘
I don't thunk I made it clear that the charity quilts made by the church women are all tied.... New sheets are used for the barking, and we buy a huge toll of poly batting... They are all the same size, and made with ten inch blocks.... In the Fall, these quilts are draped over the owed, and blessed, br gore bring sent to their destination....which might be halfway around the world...
OurHalfAcreHomestead My mom had one of those. She used to make wedding and bridesmaid dresses and dance costumes for Irish dancing and ballerina tutus for a couple of dance schools oh and Holy Communion dresses for Catholics. Oh and general tailoring for people. I wish I could sew like her, she is amazing. I don't have a crafty bone in my body! lol
Awesome quilt! Have you ever put the binding on by machine completely? I tried it for the first time not to long ago and loved it!! So quick and if you use a decorative stitch can be quit pretty.
Cindybin2001, there's nothing unsafe about tattoos. It is closed minds such yours that are hazardous to society!!!! Beautiful quilt , made and shared with love and kindness. Thank you for this tutorial.
Hi Mrs. V!! I'm piecing my queen sized quilt together at the moment and watched your hand-tying so I can plan ahead. I love the idea of your flannel sheet as backing and binding!! My question is, will I have enough flannel fabric to do both backing and binding with 1 queen-sized sheet? Or do I need more? My quilt will be a queen. Thank you so much for this tutorial!!!!!!
This is the same style and type our church ladies make they make any where from 100 to 150 a year. All donated fabrics. I miss the second hand store I was able to buy blankets and use them for batting, Now we have to buy it. If you have a disaster you can contact Lutheran World relief and then will send quilts.
I wish I were there there is a trick to tying the yarn using the needle . It gets wrapped around the yarn and comes back through and is done twice. I also have a quilt frame but prefer this method. Old army blankets make great lining.
I some how missed this one this is one time I'm happy youtube is a stinker with copy rights :) asking me questions don't work I hardly know any of the answers :P thanks for sharing
great video!!! Hey - am I the only one who wishes I could see the backside of the finished quilt!!! I consistently wish that...for all the quilts I watch made. :-)
What a work of art and a labor of love. Being a quilt shop owner I love love love a Scrappy quilt, they are my all time favorite for sure. One fabric does not care who it's neighbor may be. I don't know if you have heard of Bonnie Hunter, but that is all she makes, Scrappy quilt tops. Check out her web site: quiltville.com. I can get lost on her site for hours. Thank-you for all your inspiration. So enjoy your videos.
On a different note. If you use wool that comes in hanks here's a video that show an Amish swift that would be easy for Howie to make for you.ruclips.net/video/WqDvSvnjCg8/видео.html At Tamara Kelly's page. Have a great day!
You saved me from a stroke with this binding . thank u🙌

Stunning. A higher form of insanity but stunning. Only you, Bev. I can't even fathom the amount of time, care, and love that went into this. STUNNING.
this one was pretty simple..I have to make some more..some old quilts are getting frayed and I need to think about recovering them!
SIMPLE???!!! FRAYED!!!?? If I made one of these.....I wouldn't actually......use it!!! LOL! It'd be on a wall behind a glassed matted frame!
Thank you so very much… your demo is the best I’ve ever seen. God bless
Thank you Very much! I hope some day My sons will say they remember!
Those are the BEST Quilts!
Another way of putting on the binding is to fold it over and, from the top, "stitch in the ditch" by machine. You can't see any stitching from the top and it's very quick! Thank you!
That was the first time I made a tie quilt ,but I've always made guilts.learned from Mama and my two grandmamas when my twin and I were lil girls.
For me the quilting part is the icing on the quilt making cake :)
Your quilt is gorgeous.
I absolutely Love the quilting part. I think i just Love playing with machines and their tools!😄
Great teaching and wonderful skill to have for all sustainable lifestyles. Thanks so much Bev.
Beautiful quilt Bev.......I love the way you did the invisible stitch ....you taught me something new today......Thank You foe Sharing.....
Thank you so much!
I once bought a crazy quilt at an auction and the lining was newspaper !
I guess it made a great insulator back in the day.
That is so very nice, I love quilts.
Fabulous!

Absoulelty gorgeous! You are an amazing soul. I've made a baby quilt once. I miss my sewing machine in the winter time. ❄🌺
I am making my first quilt ever. I did find this video helpful. Thank you.
You are very talented, you do this with ease, thanks for sharing, I am going to get blocks cut out and try this.
CAUTION!! QUILTING IS ADDICTIVE! lol
Since the batting you used in this quilt is a blanket, this doesn't need to be tied nearly this much. It won't stretch or shift like batting. My grandma uses blankets for her batting as well and she does two or three tacks in the middle of the quilt and that's it.
I love this! I came here to figure out how to tie bind! I love how you work.
Thank you! There are more update ones!!
Really, really nice, Bev! Just a beautiful quilt!
Thank you!!
Very good video thank you for sharing I hope my first quilting experience is successful and I'll definitely refer to your video for tying it, thanks again
Let it be a journey not a job and you will LOVE your creation!
Bev this quilt is beautiful. Reminds me of my Memaw. I have never made a quilt before but think I may try to make a small one. Wish me luck.
good luck you will be amazing!
Well done, Bev. You did a fabulous job.
Thank you!!
just a beautiful quilt Bev ! great job . stay warm and hope you feel better later !! hugs n xx
I’m using embroidery floss. I wonder if I’ve made a mistake; I like the yarn you used
It's so pretty!......thanks for showing us how to make it. Love your channel :)
hi bev you are doing such a heard job but its worth it you will have a beautiful quilt when you finish , that's going take you a long time
hi bev do you have a over locker sewing machine
michelle from down under in bundy I don't know what that is!
I don't have a crafty bone in my body! lol
OurHalfAcreHomestead i think you call them overedging,” “merrowing,” or “serging.” i found the different names on wikipedia .
thank you i am now ready to take this project on with out fear hee hee . thanks again
That turned out so lovely!
Bev, once I get organized enough to have table space to sew on, I want to do this!
you will Love how you feel when it is done!
fantastic work,god bless your hands
Awesome quilt! Have you ever put the binding on by machine completely? I tried it for the first time not to long ago and loved it!! So quick and if you use a decorative stitch can be quit pretty.
Beautiful! Love your work!
Cindybin2001, there's nothing unsafe about tattoos. It is closed minds such yours that are hazardous to society!!!! Beautiful quilt , made and shared with love and kindness. Thank you for this tutorial.
What do tattoos have to do with tying a quilt??? And what is so dangerous about them???
Hi Mrs.
Beautiful!! Thank you so much for sharing!!
+Barbra Moulder My Pleasure honey!
Just Beautiful! You make it look so easy!!! :)
Old army blankets make great lining.
lu h yeah we just use the fold over style instead of making binding, Much cheaper and quicker.
100 to 150 quilts a year?? That's dedication, even as a group project!
Cudos to the time in making all those blocks from cutting the strips. Sewing. Patience
Always enjoy your you tube's! Have a great day
Thanks you!!!
I love all your videos!
I love it!! Thank you so much! Hand tied is totally the way to go! Are you using a walking foot when you sew the binding edge on?
It's beautiful Bev!
You are just the best!
Beautiful Bev!
Absolutely beautiful
I some how missed this one this is one time I'm happy youtube is a stinker with copy rights :) asking me questions don't work I hardly know any of the answers :P thanks for sharing

Excellent. Thank you.

Beautiful!

It's beautiful! :-)
thank you!
So you’re tiring each strip of fabric, which is more that the center of each block?
Yes
My pug helps me too!😂
great video!!! Hey - am I the only one who wishes I could see the backside of the finished quilt!!! I consistently wish that...for all the quilts I watch made. :-)
Inspiring!
Nicely Done!
Razeey
Thumbs up!!!!
well done..thank you
My Pleasure!!
you are so clever
Thank you!
If you use wool that comes in hanks here's a video that show an Amish swift that would be easy for Howie to make for you.ruclips.net/video/WqDvSvnjCg8/видео.html
At Tamara Kelly's page. Have a great day!
