    All Rush songs with the exception of about 10 in their total catalog pump me up, keep up this journey and don’t worry about upsetting anyone.👍👍👍

    This was the beginning of Rush realizing they could write slower more concise songs while still delivering compelling and complex music. Totally agree that appregio playing is one of Alex's best attributes and being just athree piece it helps to cover so much space in the music.

    Absolutely geeked on this song as a 10 or 11 year old after my babysitter introduced me to it. Would sit on the floor in front of the stereo, reading the lyrics and liner notes while listening to it.

    Yes, we like it! That's how we listened to music back then. Lots of splif's rolled on album covers like this. Weed wasn't as strong back then, but strong enough that we'd sail into the rush universe & get lost in the amazing music! Same for any great album, by any great band & there were so many great bands in the '70's my friend!!!!!

    That IS the way to do it, Tim. I love the epics and I love the shorter songs. RUSH kills it in either case, the longer epics are necessary to tell the stories and I really appreciate the epic stories from Neil so I am partial to those but I still love the short bangers.

    I doubt that will annoy any Rush fans. Rush albums are a single entity, in my opinion. The parts make the whole. In fact, even in the 'epics' have distinct parts. Similarly, the shorter tracks are parts of an entire album. I think all Rush albums should be heard like this.

    Enjoying your journey through the Rush albums. Next to the Beatles, my favorite band ever. Followed them through out their career & seen them Everytime they came to Pittsburgh.
    It's so cool watching you go through this, it makes me happy to see yet another young musician discovering Rush & getting it.
    Can't wait to watch you discover
    La Villa Strangiato one of there best.
    Enjoying the journey, looking forward to more videos
    Also Rush did Cygnus books 1 & 2 back to back on that tour, amazing

    Love it! It's the only way to listen to Rush. From start to finish the whole album! I remember the first time I bought the Hemispheres album(not cassette). I read the lyrics as it played and was like how and the hell did Neil write this and then how did Geddy sing this while playing??? Incredible!

    As amazing as Rushs' playing is I concentrate as much or more on their lyrics particularly in this song, "The more that things change, the more they stay the same". How true that is, human nature is still the same today as it was ten thousand years ago.

    You said Cygnus X-1 Book 1 was your favorite song. Wait until you hear Natural Science from their next album. I think it will dethrone Cygnus as your fave. Only because I think I have a feel for what moves you now.

    Other bands that have great long songs and great short songs? Check out Steely Dan's album "Aja." It's much more jazzy than rock, but there are a number of incredibly intricate, artistically complex and well crafted shorter songs performed by a bevy of some of the greatest studio musicians, and the title track is about 8 minutes long with tremendous drum fills by Steve Gadd. Although it is nothing like Rush, both bands share tremendous virtuosity and a love of technically challenging compositions. I might also mention Jethro Tull, Yes, and Genesis that also qualify.

  • @clockworkangel4026

    There's nothing wrong with loving the shorter songs as much as the epics (and I can't see us fans getting ticked off over it when most of us feel similarly.) That contrast is, IMHO, what gives them their power. The epics seem more sweeping and majestic when followed by short songs, while the short songs seem punchier and more intense when following an epic.

    I think you mentioned "The Production", was better here, on Hemispheres. True. Very Precise. I like Neil constant, on the highhat!! Technically, this was their Best, up to this point. As you mentioned, there is more going on. New Sounds. It just comes together, so well. Much like "Dark Side of the Moon", Studio work exceptional! "Circumstances" Great Song!!

    Even if you don't do a video reaction to it, check out "Beyond The Years" by The Neal Morse Band. It's 30+ minutes long with multiple sections. It's lighter prog than the Dream Theater's of the world, but has some interesting sounds and quite a few tasty guitar solos. Plus, Mike Portnoy's the drummer, which is always a bonus.

    Having longer and shorter songs on the same album is GREAT.
    If an album is all long songs, then the listener can be overwhelmed and exhausted by the end. Shorter songs mixed in can keep the listener engaged.

    For me Yes were another amazing band for being able to pull off amazing opus-length works, but then also shorter ones, so worth looking at their catalogue as well especially since Chris Squire was such an inspiration on Geddy and was an amazing bass player in his own right 😎 Oh, and as said by others - don't be scared to be honest. Far prefer that 👍

    Best way to appreciate an album....but several plays (as we did it back in the day) would be best for the full authentic experience, if impractical for you.
    The band is superb on this album, NP's drumming & unorthodox time signatures on full display, GL's voice is at its absolute peak best (as it would be for many more albums to come) & AL's playing is 2nd to none, inventive & truly his own, I fell in love with chorus & delay thanks to him :¬)

    Circumstances is pure Prog power, condensed into a sub-4:00 song! By the way, on your next listen, pay attention to the way Neil Peart WHACKS his drum part! He is hitting on these accents and playing on top of the beat and accenting on 1 and just playing with so much gusto!

  • @michaellynch2497
    @michaellynch2497 2 года назад

    Rush were good at doing that balance with long and short songs, only other band who managed that was early Genesis. It would have been very hard to have Book 3 on the other side! Where bands have tried to do that, an example being Jethro Tull's Thick as a Brick, the second side has not been as strong IMO, and then there's Yes -Tales from Topographic Oceans album, try listening to that in one go, 4 sides!

  • @jonathanspahn7308
    @jonathanspahn7308 2 года назад

    Well, that's the thing about Rush, isn't it? Everything they did on every album was intentional...because they had the talent to do it just that way. Were there a couple of songs that didn't quite work in those 19 albums? Sure. Most of the material, however, was masterful because of a highly educated and talented lyricist in Neil Peart who is also arguably the greatest rock drummer ever. Plus, you have two of the best guitarists and music writers in Alex and Geddy. It's what makes them, in my opinion, the greatest three piece rock band ever. 🤘👍👏

    You're being way too polite. Here, I'll say it for you. Rush said more about the human condition in these 3 minutes and 45 seconds than in the whole 18 minute suite that preceded it. It also rocked harder and it was more convincing. Everybody understands and sympathies with failure and loneliness. Neil put you right there in London with the attic window and the oppressive rain. Yes, Circumstances is a better piece of music than Hemispheres whichever way you look at it.
