This is one of my favorite albums by them because it was the first concert I ever saw in my life I will never forget this They did the whole album It was fantastic.
Imagine being a 15-year-old kid and you've never heard of this band and your neighbor who's a couple years older than you comes up to you around 5:30 in the evening and says do you want to go to a concert tonight... I've never been to a concert you beg your mother to go she allows you to go and you sit down to a general admission concert with 10 of your friends in the neighborhood and you see this band for the very first time in your life not hearing a single song by them before and you watch the permanent waves tour performance... I was a fan immediately...

Great Memory 👍🏻. It was this album that blew me away and I became a lifelong fan, too. I was a few years older but that they’d come to my town (Indy) a week or two before my brother came home from College Spring Break with this album and dropped the needle on TSOR and the rest of the album - I was blown away and hooked from that day. I had to wait until the March 1981 Moving Pictures Tour stop and by then I pretty much knew every song they played by heart . I don’t remember if they played this song - I don’t think 🤔 ever heard it live 🤷🏻‍♂️

First time I was properly introduced to Rush, I was 15 yrs old and my older boyfriend (18/19yro) did it. Then, when I was 16, he took me to my first Rush concert-1982. I was already RUSH-crazy with a MAJOR crush on Alex Lifeson, so I screamed my head off and had the time of my life. Everyone who knew me, knew I was a RUSH nut and now I’m 55 and they are STILL my favorite band of all-time! I was sooo lucky because I was able to see them 13 More times and each time was superb. They are one of those bands you never outgrow, you grow-WITH. “Welcome” to RUSH. It’s such a joy watching someone new to them discover greatness.😊

Entre Nous: Between us. The French pronunciation is simply: 'On-truh new.'
I always thought this song might be about English Canada's relationship with Québec. It works very well on that level also. Might be why they chose to title it in French. - - - There's a great novel by Canadian author Hugh MacLennan called 'Two Solitudes' about this very subject. Themes are so similar. Merci d'avoir choisi celui-ci Daniel! (Thanks for this choosing this one Daniel!) Oh, et joyeuses Pâques !!! (Oh, and Happy Easter!!!)

'Nous' is pronounced like 'new', 'Entre' is 'On - truh', and yes, the translation is Between Us. Learning French is mandatory for all of us Canadians (up to high school) as we are a bilingual country. I've forgotten so much of my French, but pronunciation is not a problem.

My dad, WWII generation, HATED hippies and HATED rock music. In 1978, I showed him some of Neil's lyrics and he thought it was written by a poet or famous writer (in a way, it was). He said it was brilliant writing. Then I told him it was from a rock band and showed him a band photo. He was quite angry because he'd been fooled but couldn't escape the profundity of Neil's lyrics. Throughout the day, he kept bitterly repeating, "Damn those guys are brilliant!"

Early Rush is great, but this album is where they really started putting it all together. Where they became not just monster musicians, but monster song writers as well. Production also suddenly jumped a few notches on this record. May be my favorite Rush record along with the record that followed. My 5 favorite Rush records came all in a row. Permanent Waves, Moving Pictures, Signals, Grace Under Pressure, and Power Windows. Maybe in that order with #1 and #2 swapping places at times.

One of my all-time favorite tracks by Rush - one that should've been a hit single IMHO. It's such a well constructed song and the lyrics have a beautiful message. I really love the drums in the intro and the bass in the bridge section in particular. Permanent Waves remains my favorite Rush album - it has been pretty much from the day I got it on vinyl in 1980. Another hidden gem is Cinderella Man from A Farewell to Kings. Would love for you to check that one out. 👍

I always viewed the line "The spaces in-between leave room for you and I to grow" as a double meaning. The obvious one is that two people sometimes need their own 'space' to grow as people. We all need our alone time. I always view this secondarily as the band telling itself and its fans/audience that the spaces in-between each song on its records - the blank space between the grooves of each song - is the rest, the down time, that is necessary to separate each song; each tune is unique and requires the spaces in-between.
P.S. Daniel. Please react to the fast-paced Rush rocker Best That I Can. It's little heard on radio and I don't know anyone who has reacted to it. It's a great little flat out rocking tune. Simple lyrics, hard- driving music.

Daniel, I definitely agree with you that Neil is one of the best lyrical writers ever. It is also amazing to me how Rush was able to create such great music to marry the lyrics to and of course Geddy's heartfelt singing. There is a book that I read discussing Neil's writings and their meanings titled, Neal Peart: Cultural Repercussions by Bradley J. Birzer, that I would highly recommend for further insights into Neil's writing.

Jim Ladd does a great job, despite mispronouncing Neil's last name (very common before Moving Pictures, and even today). I think Neil was too polite to correct him. Anyway, if you go to about 15 minutes in, there's a section on Entre Nous, and Neil talks about the song's intended meaning. Enjoy! m.ruclips.net/video/ODctr6co3gY/видео.html

I think the clue to the meaning of the song is in the French title. Rush are from Canada, and I think the song can masquerade as a personal relationship song, but is really about the relationship between the French speaking population, who live mostly in Quebec, which has language laws which discourage the use of English, and the English speakers who live in the rest of Canada. The bridges refers to the fact that Canada is officially bilingual, and to get a federal government job or run for federal office you have to speak French. Some of the French want separation from the rest of Canada, and many want recognition as a "distinct society" within Canada. There is a well known book from 1945 called The Two Solitudes about the lack of communication between the English and French in Canada, who live beside each other in a sometimes uneasy relationship "alone and yet together", the "sliding panels" being not just the physical borders between Quebec and the rest of Canada, but also the language laws which make living together more palatable for the French. (The French were the first settlers, but lost a war to the English in 1763.) I think Neil knew the song would be taken to be about a relationship by non Canadians, but that the song has this whole other meaning.

1980 was the year of the Quebec referendum. Voting to stay in Canada or not. If you were in Canada at the time, you were thinking about the relationship between the English and the French. The ‘60s and 70s had been turbulent times in Quebec. 1970, the Quebec Liberation Front kidnapped and killed the deputy premiere of the province. The federal government invoked the war measures act.
The French felt their culture was being lost to the majority Anglo population. I’m sure Neil was commenting on the situation.

So just a question: does your school require exposure to a foreign language to graduate? When I was in high school, this was required....I’m not suggesting you should know how to pronounce “entre nous”. (En-tray new by the way).......just wondering if you are studying Spanish, German or some other language...?
