More than alright! Perfection!
I always liked this song, but it has grown in me over the years! Can’t wait for the two coming up you haven’t heard yet! Be well and God bless… from Texas!!
You just would not believe how awesome this sounded live on the supporting tour at Alpine Valley in East Troy, WI!!
This is the song that got me into Rush. My brother had the album and I heard this song cranked up and I just walked in and was blown away. First by Neil's drumming, then by Alex's guitars and eventually I picked up on Geddy's bass playing. After hearing this, anytime my brother was out of the house, I would steal the album and play it for hours over and over. But had I not heard this song, I might never have found the greatest band ever. I've seen RUSH over 70 times over the years and I believe I will never hear a band as talented as these 3 ever in my life again. RIP Professor!!!
It takes a while before you get how good this song is.
I would never argue this is the best thing Rush has ever done, but it’s my favorite song from my favorite band. Can’t really explain it. Thanks, Justin.
@@BaddAtom
Not at all my friend.
So much going on in this track it will never get old!
Cheers!
Me too, this may be my all time favorite rush song
Favorite band is correct sir. But I would have to argue the best song. Camera eye is definitely top 3 for me. But give “here again” another listen. And tell me what it makes you feel…
My favorite song from Rush. I love all the fancy time signature, mythological, space-age, whatever in many of their other songs...but this song has a deep and mature resonance that goes beyond riffs and tricky parts. I think they had arrived at the place where they had nothing to prove to anybody, not even their fans. This whole album was like a great novel. This song was cinematic as well as a modern epic with something as seemingly mundane as walking the streets of two of the western world's leading cities. This was about something transcendent within the common reality.
I’m a news photographer in Detroit, every day I feel the sense of possibilities and the wrench of hard realities. This is my song.
Same with me. I am a teacher and that line always made me think of my students.
Yes, that's life.
Gets better EVERY time you listen to it, every time. Geddy’s tone has sticky tar on the bottom end of it. So satisfying and Neil’s usual brilliance varying every Fill…
Love this song out of the whole album how the hell do these guys play a concert and not get tired after a couple of songs this long
Alrighttttt? This song is superbly mixed, and showcases each of the Triumverate’s mastery of his craft. It’s a jewel of texture and tempo. The Professor shines as always, but the interweaving of Ged & Alex like two Koy fish courting in a flowing Japanese stream sweeps one away…
Nice Steve. Captured my feeling perfectly
I would argue this is one of their songs which familiarity really drives the enjoyment. I liked it OK the first time and each time after it grew on me a bit more...
@@Mike80528 you may have something there! 40 years later....it's one of my favorites of theirs!!! A masterpiece....so well structured!
Justin, I've got to say I love your reactions. You are not afraid to say if something was meh, or it's not your cup of tea ..even if it gets me in my feels sometimes. You are a true reactor, not a paid yes man...you be you...keep on keepin' on, we'll keep on watchin'.
The Camera Eye represents the end of an era for Rush. It is a stand-out track on an album that otherwise has more concise and radio-friendly songs. It's Rush's last "epic" coming in at just under 11 minutes. The next longest Rush song after this was “Clockwork Angels” on their last album coming in at 7:31 but it does not have that epic feel like Camera Eye, Natural Science or even By-Tor. After Camera Eye, Rush songs would hover around the 5 min mark for the rest of their career. Camera Eye is an amazing piece of music. This along with Jacob's Ladder are fine examples of how Rush was still able to put out a longer piece but incorporating the more modern post-70's sound. The Camera Eye was rarely played live probably because of its length. It was played on the Moving Pictures and ESL Tours then retired until it was brought back for the Time Machine Tour in 2010-2011 in which they played the entirety of Moving Pictures. Brought back once more in 2015 for R40.
Back in the days of cassettes I loved drumming to the back side of the cassette. 3 completely different grooves, back-to-back-to-back. This takes me back to senior year of high school. What a great time to be alive and aware of how music was evolving.
LOL...I commented before I read your comment that I hit the trifecta on this album, vinyl, 8 track and CD. I forgot about cassettes. I guess I hit the superfecta on Moving Pictures.
Same, but I'm older, probably, because I listened on vinl.
Because I was buying their records as they came out, I appreciated their evolution to this sound with the synths and the guitars often blending. Remember, this is also when New Wave was breaking in America, and that sound was very fresh at the time. I was happy to hear Rush evolve and stay relevant as popular music evolved. This song was always one of my favorites because it's such a great soundscape and Geddy's vocals are really strong and suit the feel of the song so well.
I remember you weren’t all that crazy about this one the first time you heard it live, I was the same way when I first heard it, through the years it’s become a favorite of mine.
There’s so much going on in their songs that it sometimes takes a handful of listens before it starts to come together. Hell, it took me years to like ‘Superconductor’, and I’m still not 100% sold on it.
My favorite track on this album!
The chord inversions Alex plays in the beginning movement with the 5th in the bass sound so enormous...
Agreed. Glad someone else mentioned this.
Alex's chord choices and tone together always sound absolutely huge and amazing
This is my take always loved this song this album is a masterpiece. When they played this on the time machine tour. It got the biggest pop. Hands down I loved the whole album when I bought it in 81!
The bass tone is great on this album. Legend is they pulled an amp that was meant to be thrown away out of a junk pile. Tubes were dying.
That story is connected with the 'Counterparts' album, not this one 😉
This song has been my favorite since the first time I heard it. I was a senior in HS when MP came out. I went to the concert back in '81. They performed every song except Witch Hunt. Because at the time, the technology didn't exist to be able to perform it live. Now I will disclose that I was very high at that concert, but the Camera Eye just totally blew me away. And if you go back and watch it on the Time Machine tour, the crowds reaction says it all. Also Alex's solo is one of his best. But I'm looking forward to your next two reactions of Witch Hunt and Vital Signs! 😎☮️
That wall of sound on those chords...picture Alex with his white SG double neck, playing the top neck-12 string!
I told you they were a winter band. Look at how those people on the album cover are dressed! I can't wait for the first snows!
Had some cool parts, you say ... never mind the uniqueness of Alex's solo in this. The expressiveness, the way he wrings a note for all it's worth before he kicks in the afterburners. His tone and phrasing are something to behold. Take a closer listen:)
I adore Rush for many reasons but listening to ut again through new ears has given me a new appreciation for Geddys voice and harmonies . Not easy
This is still my favorite song. Probably because when i was a young teenager my brother bought Moving Pictures for my birthday. And of course the nerd that i am, i played side two first making this the very first Rush song I ever heard. This is the song that started it all for me.
I like this one as well although it took me a number of listens to really appreciate it. I watched the Primus song as well with Geddy and Alex. That must of been a lot of mixed emotions for both of them as in their last interview Geddy said that Neil's passing was still fresh for them. Good on them for performaning again.
Cheers
I love 80's Rush! I hope you do too. If not, 90's Rush is also great. It's all so different which is so awesome. They were always evolving, so it's always interesting. Love the channel. Keep it up!
This is an epic song - if you keep listening to Rush, you will come to love it.
Sometimes it takes a long time to click with some of their tunes.
As someone who is a huge Rush fan and addicted to Rush reactions, I can’t wait to see your reaction to the next three albums. Personally I believe Signals, Grace and Windows are them at their peak of songwriting and arranging, in terms of a great balance between their rock and more synth heavy phase.
I personally believe the space Alex inhabits and his overall guitar work on these albums is amazing.
Also, I’m curious if you’ll notice the great bass and drum mix on Signals. One of my favorite sounding Rush albums for sure and I call it their “funkiest” work, relatively speaking.
I am a tad biased as those albums did come out when I was around 13-17 years old and the anticipation of those albums being released was so exciting to me.
Lastly there is a serious shortage of Rush reactions to the next three albums as well. Can’t wait to see you dive in. Take care.
The solo section at the end is my
favorite part of the song. They are
so locked in and groovin’!!
I don't know why I keep watching, but its kinda funny. If things on Moving Pictures make you say "yeah... ok... that was cool.... meh.. .", its going to be fun watching you implode with the later albums. On the next three albums are a few of my top ten songs by them, ever. Subdivisions. Chemistry. Between The Wheels. Mystic Rhythms, Middletown Dreams... oh, and theres one coming up about a space shuttle launch. No joke. It may not be rock and roll, but it has the most filthy fade out of any Rush song ever, lol.
EASILY one of my favourite songs by RUSH!
So while Neil may have gotten a bit carried away with alliteration in this time frame, I really love the alliteration in these lyrics. "miST in the STreets of weSTminster" (OK maybe not technically "alliteration" since it's not the first sound in each word but it's close!). I love Alex's rhythm guitar under the verse and, while it's simple, it's pretty creative and I've never come across anything else that uses C and F chords like that.
Also, this is a great example of where Alex starts to overdub acoustic guitars under his electric guitars to add an extra tonal color. This sort of situation is where the piezo pickups in his electrics really help as he can have two completely different guitar tones playing at the same time.
I think this is another Rush song where it's cool rifts strung together but that is a lot of Rush songs. And they are really cool riffs!
I think it also was in this song that the acoustic guitar behind the electric one had 'Nashville tuning', meaning it's like a 12-string but only the 6 octave strings 🙂
This is a well put together song. The time changes and well put together subdivisions of this song is great. Tough to play. To me, like Permanent Waves does not have a bad song on it. The mix is amazing, Neil's drums sound is killer and gets even better over time. You can hear the growth in their song writing. Justin just your movement to the song with not many words says its all. I hope you had a chance to view the video I sent you on Geddys right hand finger technique. Pretty cool....see you tomorrow.
The cool part is that even though this song was left off Exit Stage Left it was INCLUDED on the 40th Anniversary set from Toronto!!!!
The live songs on the 40th Anniversary set I like better than Exit Stage Left.
A great prog song. Most of this album seemed way too mainstream for me the first few times I listened, but this track kept me coming back and I’m glad it did.
I remember first hearing this in high school and wondering what on earth it was about (no internet back then to look it up). This is definitely one of my top 5 favorite Rush songs--I love the way the drums drive the song forward while the guitar and synth or bass play off each other. To me, this is a song is a perfect example of the whole being greater than the sum of its parts. I mean, the guitar part isn't really that intricate, and the bass gives a nice counterpoint, but it isn't Geddy's most virtuosic work. Even Neil's part isn't that difficult (relative to some of his other songs--don't get me wrong, it's still not a walk in the park). But man for me, this song just really works--that 10:00 minutes always just flies by.
I didn't care for this one at first...took a lot of time to grow on me, but now part of what I consider a perfect album!
Great song, love the solo in this!!
I can't wait for you to start Signals ! That's the album that inspired me to play guitar. Alex and Geddy are so tight. Alex harmonizing with the synthizer is awesome. It's his melodic playing that I like even his solos are melodic. Every song on there I like . One of my favorite albums. It's another level , and I hope u enjoy it. As always tho I appreciate your critiques and straight honesty. Don't change really enjoy your input. To Moving pictures is a good album but it didn't show its full potential loke signals and Permanent waves.
You'll get a hefty dose of the synths on Signals, the next studio album....especially Subdivisions, which is very synth-forward
I remember back in February ‘81 going back to Tower Records to exchange my first Moving Pictures vinyl album because of the static noises at the beginning of this tune. I thought it was a defect.
I think Rush is growing on you sir!
If You List Alex Lifeson Has His Electric Guitar Layered On Top Of His Acoustic Guitar Playing On This Song. He Does That Technique On Many Rush Songs. If You Have A Good Musical Ear You Will Hear It.
It took my some listens also to like it and it would have been better compacted into a shorter 5-6 minute song but I still like it and loved when they finally played it live.
It’s probably just me, but I always expect the “yes, yes, yes …” from the end of Yes’ ‘Tempus Fugit’ to come in during the fadeout of this one.
What Steve the Designer said.
Tune in for some more amazing atmosphere in Witch Hunt. Heavy, foreboding, dark, possibly evil.
Give it a couple more times...will be like Freewill.
I love the synth heavy 80s stuff… doesn’t make me less of a Rush fan. Unfortunately some people have that view point. It all depends on when you were introduced… my first record was A Show of Hands, so that stuff is my first love.
I gotta say for me, it took quite a few listens to like this song, it was not a favourite when first released. I can't really say what the reason is, just did not appeal to me at the time. PS, I love it now and really enjoy the intricacies of the whole piece and it is wonderful in a live performance.
Same. There's just a lot of pleasant to hear and fun to listen to melodies and harmonies going on. It's just got a good feel to it.
❤ ❤... ❤
Yup...Exactly what I expected. I am not sure why people were begging for this to be played in concert for so long. On a different topic.....Alex and Geddy on stage (with Primus and the creators of South Park) playing together on stage for the first time since Neil's death. Just saw this today! ruclips.net/video/lel5JGJfwqQ/видео.html
Yea and they sounded great!
Yeah, that was really cool!! I watched it yesterday! Great to see them jamming again! Be well, my friend!
People wanted to hear this song live because it is a a great example of a vibe only a band like Rush could produce. A musical and lyrical depiction of life between two different cultures and the different internal feelings it produced in Neil in his observations of the world around him.
This song was great live. Yeah baby!!!!
@@mda037 I agree, and when I finally got to hear it live on "Live in YYZ 1981" it was as awesome as I thought it would be (I never got to hear them play it when I saw them live).
Great highway tunes!
Overall, Moving Pictures is a more "cinematic" set of songs than Permanent Waves, and none more so than this track. From a compositional standpoint I find it interesting how they created an epic song out of three pretty basic ideas. It's all very much in the key of C. There's the opening motif which is C-G-F-Bbsus2, the C#-C natural "tension" sections, and then the bright C to F verses. An almost minimalist solo from Alex and boom, done. Lots of textures, but not a huge amount of development or complexity. But it works because it plays to their strengths. They refrained from being this expansive on later albums. I guess, like the heavy prog of Hemispheres, they got it all out of their system. Plus I think this was the tail end of their prog phase and they knew the 80s weren't going to be too kind to this kind of music. My only regret is they never worked with Trevor Horn. He could have pulled some really interesting ideas out of them and done some fun things with them.
If you pay close enough attention you can hear Alex Lifeson-Lerxst say: CMON PRATT-Talking to Neil Peart-Pratt! Geddy Lee is known as Dirk.
I’m a huge rush
Fan and I’ll admit there’s music I don’t really care for but you have to give them credit for being relevant in different areas 70s 80s and 90s it was hard pressed find a good music in the 80s but rush Kept making hits I probably saw them in concert 10 times when I lived in California I remember one time I want tickets on the radio and I never even went to that concert all three of these guys are excellent musicians some of the top
This is only Cool? haha This is a masterpiece more like it. Natural Science was a banger, but this song tops it in every way. Also, anybody that says they like Geddy's screaming/screechy voice of the 70's over vocals like these needs their ears checked. LMAO! Vocals are amazing and melodic on this song.
Signals was their best synth album. it’s real good.
The one thing everybody can agree on, whether you like this song or not (or any of their songs for that matter) is that all of their songs have a meaning to them (wink and a nod to the music moguls). Peart never wrote a song just for the sake a of having another song
I don't think The Camera Eye is as strong or dramatic or bold as Natural Science or Jacob's Ladder, but it's one of their smoothest and well-produced pieces. It's thought-provoking, incites strong imagery, easily flows, is written very well, and has memorable passages. It just feels right and is something that's nice to hear when you feel contemplative.
No one could fault you for preferring Permanent Waves over Moving Pictures!
When does the train arrive on Track 5?
Alex's guitar has such a fat heavy sound in this song. But speaking of synth, it's my own personal opinion that Witch Hunt has the best use of synth of any song they've ever done.
Good driving song. Strong rhythm section as always, but doesn't really give me the vibe most their stuff does. I think the mix does it for me, with stereo effects and layering makes it interesting through the cans. Thanks again JP.
Not my favorite flavor but we all have different tastes. Thanks Justin.
Watch the live version neal rips. yeah baby.
The Camera Eye for me is the only weak point of the album ... it is very beautiful anyway. There are good ideas but too few to justify the duration, it could easily last half (it is quite repetitive). The next one (Witch Hunt) is my favorite of the album, an underrated masterpiece.
If you love all the synth and electronics, I'm sure you'd love or do love Kraftwerk they were way ahead of their time, repetitive and droning at times but great.
The 80s stuff sounds huge. Again, they don't do Bad.
Maybe someone can answer this here, but I've always wondered about The Camera Eye and why it sounds so much like "Space Art" by Hollywood Flanger, which was published in 1979.
ruclips.net/video/YNMSPA652C0/видео.html
It's especially similar around The Camera Eye's 2m19s mark.
I've never been able to find a tie between the two bands online.
A really good song but it never has quite grabbed me like other long songs Natural Science or The Necromancer, Hemispheres, Xanadu, By-Tor, etc
Eh..me personally..fuck the camera eye.. NEXT 🤣🤣(count down to Test for Echo 🕐😅🤌🏾🔥🔥)
oh yeah. Dog Years is much better. LMAO!

Good song on a good album.
Great song on a great album more like it. One of the best rock albums in history.
@@carlgibbons5777 I know that most Rush fans agree with you. Also, it would seem the radio agrees with you as well. I feel differently. I think Moving Pictures is over-played and over-hyped. Rush has far far better albums.
@@danalioto3146 Not any of the 70's records. lol
This one is probably my least favorite on MP. Good song on an album of fantastic ones.
Come on Vital Signs...lol.
Not many non Rush fans have heard it. Even when this album was huge, like summer of '81, I dont think I ever heard it on the radio.
BTW, pretty sure I hit the trifecta on this album. Vinyl, 8-track and CD.
Yeah baby !
Bring out your dead !
Preliminary response to you Justin before the song ends. Me thinks you got a certain amount of stank face going here, so you shall like it substantially more than some others.
Your reaction is quite short... This is more "musician listens" than "musician reacts". I love the way you usually analize music, it's too bad you don't say more about this song.
This song is just tooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo looooooooooooooooooooooooooong. I think the boys kind of slacked on this one.
This song is essentially the same tune played twice with a guitar solo at the end, so it doesn't really class as an "epic". It's nicely put together though and grew on me with repeated listens as I started to notice the syncopation in the verses and the lyrics.
Do you feel like you are developing an ear for Geddy's voice now to understand him as you listen?
absolutely
Yeah, this piece didn't really suit the heavy, squashed sound of Time Machine. If anything it should have been performed and included on either A Show of Hands or Exit Stage Left.
4th?
It’s a stoner song 🤷♂️
first
Nope!

"The Camera Eye" remains my least favorite song off an incredible Rush record. Quite a departure from their previous songs and yet it is still Rush. My first opportunity to see them live was on this tour in San Diego in 81. I was nearing the end of my enlistment in the Navy so the concert holds a lot of emotion for me.
Finally, in many aspects it is a preview of the synth-heavier music to come on their next 4 albums. Now, onto the highlights of Side 2: "Witch Hunt" (the only song they didn't play on the tour) and "Vital Signs." Peace!! ✌😊
