This is so sick!! But not fair to the goofy footers, straight backside is hardest air to do and you see 3 goofy footers not even try to go for straight airs cause its not really possible...

Might help to use a larger viewing screen to when watching Replays Might be easier to make a judgment
Have to agree with Matt about not liking surfers being pigeon-holed into a specific maneuver. The free surf format of previous seasons was awesome. I understand that you're trying to allow lesser known/less aggressive surfers a chance to catch more waves with the timed heats, but there has to be a way to balance that while still allowing surfers to freely express themselves. Conditions clearly didn't favor the maneuver.

You can't just tell people to do straight airs and expect good things to happen.
Stoked to see chiggy go through but it seemed a bit unfair to the goofy foots to try and make them do backside straight airs in those conditions

It’s interesting to watch as a skateboarder who started surfing way later. I know that airs are harder on a surfboard because of the moving landing, but the same sort of principles in style should apply: it should look like an ollie in that it is popped and levels out, or gets boned out, but then is matched to the landing transition, “feet over bolts”. Some of the ones the judges were impressed by, apart from maybe height, didn’t impress me. I think Rasta Rob had some good proper punts, where he pops, and made proper square landings; Dean too (the one they called shit because of height, was actually a perfect Ollie in skating). If surfing is going to take a page from skating, it should use skating as the bar for what’s rad, and what’s not, with regard to style…irrespective of how many more factors must come into play for airs to happen in surfing. There are certainly guys who air who you can tell must skate because they do them properly. The 45 degree rocket launch and landing manual, in skating, isn’t considered a legit air lest it is a Japan air or Airwalk, something that intentionally never levels out or gets boned.

When they said airs are hard, thats an understatement lol took me like 10 years just to get my body airborne without the board lol and I still can't get the board airborne with my feet still on it lol yea I suck but hey I'll admit it :) but I can balance and surf bigger waves that someone that runs rings around me in manuovers couldn't surf lol but I'd also drown quicker lol

Making these guys stick to only straight airs during these conditions was not the right call
otherwise an epic comp - but just weird to restrict it due to the straight air
@@centralcoastspearos5561 We spoke with the surfers before the event and they wanted this. They had said that straight airs are more difficult and needed to be included. You're right, however, so very difficult for the goofyfoots...
This comp is super boring compared to stab high Costa Rica and mentawais where the boys could just cruise and launch whatever they wanted with a ton of attempts. If you only give them an hour they’re gonna hold back so they can advance through and so we won’t see world class airs. Funny how the best air of the comp so far was a 0/10.

We have 36 surfers. If you want lesser known surfers and Ladybirds to get the best waves (not just the alpha surfers) from a lineup of locals, a big field of competitors and visiting surfers, we thought this format worked better. We still back the decision.
