  • This video shows the repair of PS4 System Software Update Loop Error SU-41283-8. In this condition the PS4 will not pull out of the system software update loop and will endlessly continue to attempt to reinstall the system software. Safe Mode can be accessed but the OS will always fail to reinstall.
    This issue is caused by a corruption of the BT/WiFi firmware stack within the Flash_Main NOR IC or potentially a complete failure of the hardware module. In this video we repair the firmware corruption at hand, re-program our NOR flash IC and finally we're allowed to complete the firmware upgrade procedure and get back to doing some gaming.
    Many thanks for watching this video - if it helps then please COMMENT, LIKE and SUBSCRIBE for more content like this.
    If you're a new viewer then please check out the rest of my channel - I have over 60 videos on the channel focusing on PS4 / XBONE / Apple Macbook and iPhone repair.
    As promised, below is the video tutorial series for repairing Flash_Main NOR corruption of the BT/WiFi firmware stack for SAA/SAB/SAC revision motherboards. Follow these closely - this is FIRMWARE and any mistake caused by not following these procedures to the letter may result in a permanently bricked device!!

      Andrew Paul One big question! I have different update loop, but now console not working at all (only blue light). I checked it and problem is Main flash, every dump is different! All 13 :0
      Only few differences, 4-5. Its 100% bad IC, it is possible to fix it somehow? :(
      I flashed that dumps on another working IC but still nothing. IC must be corrupted then and keeps changing

    • @AndrewPaul
      @AndrewPaul  7 лет назад

      +Gabriel Anacik Not good. Sadly as the dumps are encrypted there's nothing you can do - be sure any connections to the chip are solid - poor joints or dirty connections in a socket could cause mis-reading and affect the quality of the dump.

    If you have a NOR chip on a donor board and just about the soldering skills to take off and replace, could the donor chip be swapped in and then boot to Safe Mode to flash a new / latest / other firmware, or are there other contingencies / considerations that make that unworkable? Would a donor chip of the same FW level change that?

    Hi Andrew, loving your channel. any ideas for SU-42118-6 error?

    • @AndrewPaul
      @AndrewPaul  5 лет назад

      This is typically a BD-ROM drive error where the console cannot communicate with the BD-ROM. Check BD-ROM ribbon between motherboard and drive - if the tabs are broken on either side replace the cable and test. Also check connectors for breaks or corrosion. If no better, check and replace drive board fuses F501, F201, F202 and F203 where bad. Otherwise this may require Renesas IC swap to a donor board if all else fails.

    I have a ps4 in at present with a similar but different issue.
    Customer stated that the console would randomly freeze and act weirdly before finally the software went so weird it wouldn't boot.
    Now upon attempting to reinitialise, it states the file is corrupt (when it is not and it is the full 877mb file). This happens also if you try to download from the internet via option 3 in safe mode.
    My theory is that there is a faulty ram chip somewhere, the file gets copied over to ram and then cannot be read.
    Only thing I wonder is, would it be the standalone ddr3 2gb chip or one of the gddr5 modules?

    you sound like a professional. Could you please help me out? I really don't want to lose all the data on this device I've spent money on it. I'd be forever grateful if you did.
    so my problem is:
    I finish the update no problem. When it restarts however...it opens again in safe mode and loads a little bit saying "checking system storage status" then stops at 31% and says "can't open ps4. Connect usb for update reinstallation file for version 9.00 or later." I got on to the playstation website, installed the latest update file, and put it on a usb storage device following the instructions given in the website. I then opened the ps4 in safe mode (holding the power button until 2 beeps came out) and chose the third option (update system software). I then chose update using usb storage device. It reads it and downloads the update no problem and restarts and the whole things starts going on and on and on again! just a loop. I've tried the fourth option (reset default settings) but it just shows an error and shuts off the device. If you know a solution to this please, whenever you've got time, ANYONE, just reply with steps I should do. Thanks!

      It will remove all data from the console and revert it to an out of box state. If you have your saves etc backed up to cloud storage then you should be able to recover them after signing back in, otherwise once initialised whatever is on the hard disk currently will be gone.

    Hi, Andrew, love your videos. I have Slim PS4 with SU-41283-8 error (SAD-001 motherboard), however the NOR flash chip is a Winbond 25Q256FV (not Macronix), and when I try to read it with Teensy, it doesn't work (only gives manufacturer, and the rest is unknown). My Teensy works perfectly fine when reading MXIC chips, so I know it's not a problem, so I think there is just no support in SPIway for these newer Winbond NOR chips used in Slim PS4s. Have you come across these chips when fixing Slim PS4s, and do you know what tools to use to read it? thank you

    • @AndrewPaul
      @AndrewPaul  6 лет назад

      Hi James, that would seem very strange as that IC is a 256mb chip. The slim boards I've seen all have the same Macronix chip to date as per the 1200. Do you have a photo of it at all? Cheers.

    • @AndrewPaul
      @AndrewPaul  6 лет назад

      Very interesting mate thank you. Must be a new board revision - wonder what they're doing in there with a 256MB flash?
      What BT / WiFi module does the board have installed? SPIWay does have support for an earlier Winbond 25Q-series flash - if we start seeing lots of these then we may need an update to the software. A standard USB chip reader will probably dump it - it's just a question of what's in the contents. If it's a pre-existing module on board then hopefully it shouldn't be too difficult to spot the C0020001 container within.

    • @jameshunt1071
      @jameshunt1071 6 лет назад

      More often than not it's after a software update, however I have seen it where a change to a persistent system settings change held in ROM has resulted in a corruption before now but only the once. Since 4.0 the modules have thankfully been interchangeable. You can also use a DHSM in place on an AW-NB218 and vise-versa.

      Where are you doing the file comparison? If it's within Ac1dFlash (as I suspect as you mention CoreOS differences) then don't use it within there - do the file compare within HxD on the orig / orig1 / orig2.bin dumps. If HxD says the whole 32,768kb files are different then redump them after checking connections to your NOR and programmer. If HxD reports files are identical then split them out in Ac1dFlash and patch the C0020001.bin if necessary.

    • @veselinvasilev5739

      It was definitely NOR flash corruption. Everything went well until I had to use AC1D Tool. It gave me an error saying it is not PS4 dump and something about invalid header. Then I opened the NOR dump with HxD and it turned out the "SONY COMPUTER ENTERTAINMENT" sign on the first few rows was partially missing, so I wrote it manualy, checked all other bin files for blank spaces at least, and thought what do I have to lose. So soldered the chip, assembled the damned thing, put it into safe mode and initialized it. Well what do you know, it lives again!
      Thank you Andrew for the detailed tutorials! Cheers!

    hi, paul i need your help. i have done something wrong! which i am thinking. i was having SU-41283-8. i am in 3.55 firmware. and i can only install this version. i did take my nor dump in this version.. after this i did fix my nor with donor of the same version 443 template. but no luck same problem SU-41283-8 error. then i again reinstall 3.55 it goes perfectly but no controller sync. now what i did is without taking new dump, i did try new template and fix my nor.. but now i am having blinking blue light..can you please tell me what should i do noww.. thanks in advance

    • @AndrewPaul
      @AndrewPaul  6 лет назад +1

      +Mohmmad Jewel blinking blue light is a sign of an invalid NOR. If you've used the wrong template and corrupted the containers you may well permanently brick the machine - let's hope that isn't the case here. Restore your original (stock) dump from before you patched it so it's back to its original condition - hopefully it'll boot. Send over your first original unedited dump and I'll check / patch it for you. Email is ytandrewpaul@outlook.com

    • @AndrewPaul
      @AndrewPaul  4 года назад +2

      The update won't re-write the corrupted data in flash (why it won't, I've no idea!) - if it completes, you'll still have the issue. More often than not though, the update will detect the corruption and throw the relevant 'SU' error thus sticking the console in an update loop. This procedure is necessary anywhere that NOR BT stack corruption is present. Hope that helps to clear things up.

    • @AndrewPaul
      @AndrewPaul  4 года назад +2

      Hi,
      If the dump from your NOR checks out OK against the correct patch then you can be sure your issue isn't in firmware - that leaves two possibilities, either a defective replacement module or an issue with the installation. If the new chip isn't uniformally reballed then you can get it where some of the pads underneath don't contact with the motherboard and you'll still get this issue. Likewise if you have any cold joints beneath the new module you'll see the same problem. Good luck.

    • @AndrewPaul
      @AndrewPaul  5 лет назад

      New hard drive, no.
      The issue is likely down to an issue within the firmware chip on the motherboard. Occasionally it'll throw the error with a bad module however most of the time with a bad module it'll just not work - no errors. If you're UK based then we can likely repair it for you.

      Thank you - I've no idea why it doesn't just force update it to be honest... it knows what revision of console it's being uploaded to and with the C0020001.bin container size being held in flash it should also be able to identify which stack it should be using (basically an automated version of what we manually do to fix things here) and overwrite from there but for whatever reason it doesn't. The cynical amongst us would suggest it suits when these machines end up outside their 12 month warranties - the newer SAE-based consoles are practically disposable the quality is so poor. Doesn't bode well for those new consoles going forwards - put it this way, I wouldn't be buying a new shop-bought slim now if you paid me!

    • @frankynakamoto2308
      @frankynakamoto2308 7 лет назад

      Andrew Paul sorry I should had explain myself better.
      What I mean is that issues like this are cause by Firmware, which I assume there is an issue with the Operating System, something not allowing the update to install.
      Where are this updates installed? I assume in a Hard Drive, having an SD card could allow this same issues to occur, or an SD card would have the same problems installing the updates,
      Basically my question is, reference that if having a more reliable Hard Drive makes a difference preventing this kinds of issues, and if the SD card could be of improvement here, now a days SD cards run faster than HDD's, with speeds faster than 200mbps, and OS can be run from certain SD cards.

    • @AndrewPaul
      @AndrewPaul  7 лет назад

      Ah I see. It's irrelevant really as it's a firmware issue rather than an OS (software) issue. Firmware brings up the system hardware (rather like a computer BIOS) which in turn loads the OS from HDD and then takes over. As firmware needs to be relatively secure to prevent modification and therefore combat circumvention of the security system against mods etc which could allow unauthorised copies of games etc then it's encrypted and stored in a flash ROM rather than anything like a hard disk or removable storage device which can be very easily dumped / copied and updated.

    • @frankynakamoto2308
      @frankynakamoto2308 7 лет назад

      Andrew Paul ok I see, but firmware has to be software as well, Bios is also Software, they just call it Bios because is where for controlling input and output operations, so all this basically comes down to reinstalling the firmware, would this firmware be able to be store in an SD as backup? Would that allow to be used in case or firmware error to self reinstall.

    • @AndrewPaul
      @AndrewPaul  7 лет назад

      In a very basic sense then technically it is, but the definition is as above - firmware is very low-level, software takes over once firmware has fully initialised the system and brought up the OS. The trouble with flash memory like SD cards is they're commonly MLC-based which have a limited number of cycles / re-writes and would be much more likely to fail than a specifically designed ROM IC like the current implementation.

    Hi Andrew. I have bought ps4 star wars edition wit the same issue. I have desoldered chip, dumped firmware and extracted it but c0020001.bin does not seem to be corrupted. Size of this file is 432029 bytes. Bluetooth module is AW-NB218 in 1.1 rev. Any ideas??
    Best regards.

    • @AndrewPaul
      @AndrewPaul  6 лет назад

      It's likely a failed hardware module on the 1200 series - very common weak point. Providing the console is on a firmware version greater than 4.0 then you'll be able to change it for any 1200-compatible module. If you can't do it yourself and you're UK / EU based then I can provide a quote to you for repair.

      Thank You for fast reply. If I change wifi module for 1.2 for example do i need to edit dumped firmware??Regards.

    • @AndrewPaul
      @AndrewPaul  6 лет назад

      Providing your firmware dump tests correctly against a known-good 432,029 byte C0020001.bin template then you can simply replace the module and the console will function normally again - no firmware editing required.

    Thank you so much for your videos. This time I have an issue when I replace the content of the C0020001 template to my original orig0.bin file and rename it to orig_fixed.bin, and extracted it again to compare HxD says "The chosen files are identical. The files sizes are different, though!". Hope somebody can help me with this. Greetings from México!!

    Hey andrew ! Please answer me!
    Any solution for ps4 error su-30631-3, where it fails at 64% in safe mode? It might be a nor flash corruption but how can I be sure?? thx!

    • @AndrewPaul
      @AndrewPaul  6 лет назад

      It's not one I've seen in the flesh mate so not too sure on that one.
      Have you tried an alternative USB flash drive to install the update from?

    • @mustafamohammed9118
      @mustafamohammed9118 6 лет назад

      I tried everything that was suggested on the internet! Everything from changing usb to changing HDD to using all safe mode options! It keeps erroring with that particular one at 64%. If i dump the flash will I be able to see where the error is or the corruption in HXD :/ ?

    • @AndrewPaul
      @AndrewPaul  6 лет назад

      Hi bud,
      I wouldn't think so as it's encrypted so it'll just appear as garbage. If it's flash corruption then it's likely done for sadly.

    • @AndrewPaul

      If it's turning on and off after a few seconds then it's not a NOR issue. If it will power back on, it's likely RAM / APU. If not, PSU.

      The file at the end would be per-console so wouldn't be of any use apart from on that one machine. The only file which might be of use would be the firmware C0020001.bin template files but without knowing your firmware version or motherboard revision I've no way of knowing which one you need. In the linked videos there are download links to templates for v3.xx and v4.0x templates.

    Hi, thanks for replying, I tell you that the two 32,768kb files orig1 and orig2 I compare them with the hxd and they tell me that they are not the same, there are differences and with the PS4_AC1D_Flash-Tool I compare file by file and they all give me correct minus the Core0s that gives me a difference with the two readings orig1 and orig2 and the file C0020001.bin is corrupted too but in the two readings alike this already repaired by a correct but the core0s do not know what to do

    • @AndrewPaul
      @AndrewPaul  7 лет назад

      Re-dump them after checking connections to your NOR and programmer. if you're using a socket ensure the pins are clean and that any soldered connections on your programmer are good. If you're soldering directly to the NOR ensure those joints are good and that wires are kept as short as possible.

    • @AndrewPaul
      @AndrewPaul  7 лет назад

      Ideally you'll want to remove the IHS before lifting - you should renew the thermal paste below the IHS after rework anyway as it'll be ruined after being subject to such temperatures. This will enable you to use a less harsh profile on the BGA and it should lift a lot easier.

      The only one you can freely ignore is "Part 1 - addendum for CUH-12xx series PS4s"
      Part 1 itself shows you the necessary hardware you'll need to perform the fix and how to build it;
      Part 2 shows how to get the hardware and software required installed;
      Part 3 is a detailed tutorial for checking the dump and performing the patching should it be required.

    • @AndrewPaul

      Hi,
      Yes this is likely to be a software issue - you will however need to have the facility to dump / reprogram your existing NOR flash ROM as they're unique to each console (you can't flash any other ROM from another person to it - it must be specifically patched for your console).

    • @narutouzumaki-ds6pg
      @narutouzumaki-ds6pg 7 лет назад +1

      Andrew Paul ah vale cada consola tiene su propio rom y entonces como lo podria solucionar porque me descargue el software 4.73 y que tendria que cambiar del software muchas gracias por contestar eres una persona maravillosa gracias

    • @AndrewPaul
      @AndrewPaul  7 лет назад

      The software that needs fixing is contained in the ROM on your motherboard - because it is corrupt the 4.73 update file you downloaded cannot find the Bluetooth WiFi firmware it wants to update so it quits with this SU-41283-8 error message. To get around this you need to dump your existing ROM, patch it with the correct working firmware section and re-program it. The 4.73 update will then find the relevant Bluetooth WiFi firmware correctly, update it where necessary and the update will then proceed and complete as normal.

      Every file is unique to every PlayStation so it wouldn't be of any use to anyone else barring the owner of this particular console.
