this car was once ridiculously cheap back in 2020 (last model year + covid),. I regrated not getting one so much. It actually holds value very well too
@@alltrack_r all the similarities are there as the r variant... Truthfully its the engine and supporting details that make it an R. It really makes it a special car for me.

Great video Max. I had a Golf R wagon and it's one of the most fun cars i've had. I always took great pleasure in getting in to my estate car with my old mans flat cap on (Iam 70) and being able to thrash most cars off the traffic lights.😀👍
In Sweden we call them Combi-cars and they're very popular here. Volvo is still making alot of interesting fast combi-cars. I drive an Alltrack, but I do want an R combi
I used to own a 325d (F31) estate and I now I have a Golf 7.5 R SW and I must say the handling is far better on the BMW but I love the Golf for the ease of use every day, the DSG gear box is top notch and the quick rack steering help a lot in the city. The Haldex is really good too (yes, it's not the best 4 by 4 system...) and help a lot to put the power down when it rain (which is a lot here in Belgium). The car feel far more nible car then the 325d. And the boot is actually bigger than in the BMW ! 600 liters vs 550 !
Yeh….I would go for the Variant, lots more space and no problems staking my dog 🐕😀 Do like the looks of the Cupra 333hp with a similar size boot ! With these “family “ size cars Im really not interested in drift modes or exhaust with more noise…. Do appreciate the tests you do on these type of cars , keep up the good work and Happy New Year.
3:24 I just checked your 2025 GTI review, and there literally is an empty decoy button in the place of the R button...On the right side it has the heated steering-wheel button, and on the left side it is empty waiting for an R button to be placed. Thanks VW.
Got my Mk8 R in a wagon and love it! Pity they don't sell the wagon anymore in Australia, there isn't much you can buy here that isn't a Ute or an SUV.
I had a golf 7R variant, great car, brakes not that good. Afterwards had a golf 8R hatch, was even better, brakes are a great upgrade on that. Overall driving fun was also better. Now i own an RS3 sedan. Nothing beats that 5 cilinder for me. But thats a different conversation.
Hi mate, I'd really appreciate it if you could review the all new Cupra Leon Estate 333 hp. The boot in that one is HUGE and I've been told that the suspension system is nearly perfect. Blessings!
I would always go with the Golf wagon instead of the hatchback. The wagon alone isn't a huge car with about 4,63m. Its more like a BMW F30 sizewise which is compact and easy to park. I don't like hatches for some reason.
Is this infotainment really solid? Previous was nothing but disaster, so this would be one of main things that i would want to try if i go for one. I tested pre facelift and just could not handle the pain, i literally avoided the car because of it. Sales people were not even denying the state of that... I actually consider this and 340i as my next family car. In my opinion this is good value new, but you can get m340i pre registered or slightly used for very good price. That said i expect big discounts from VW on this top model, we'll see. //edit To answer your question. This is (and always was) estate/variant for me. Something like baby RS6 (original RS2) for way less money. I still think Golf 7,5 R is unbeaten, but this looks luckily way better than pre facelift interior and EXTERIOR.
I know that across the pond that the r has just been a hatch and I don’t think your r enthusiast would take to a Avant. I personally would because I have a a4 Avant and I love it
The Golf R not having physical steering wheel buttons is the dumbest automotive oversight I have heard in a while. The most expensive version has the terrible steering wheel of the previous gen.
You’re so wrong…I have a VW with physical buttons and a GTI witty the haptics in the steering wheel and I’ve come to prefer the latter. You’re welcome to your personal preference of course, but they are in no way, shape or form “terrible”. In fact, when it comes to adjusting volume or track/station, the sliders are great and easier to use than the buttons. Just a no look swipe/twitch of the thumb. And I’ve rarely if ever hit a key inadvertently.
I have it in my 8 R and i love it. The reason why they didn‘t updated (some would say downgrated) the steering wheel of the R is cause of the specific blue R button on the left side. This would have been to much to adapt.
Golf 8 R Only as a Variant? sure. but maybe with a V6 400HP Motor? that would be pretty epic. or maybe 350hp for the 4cyl even tho that might not feel that good anymore
The steering wheel situation is a shame, blaming the "r button" just to save money - same for the hatchback. The only reason for me to get an GTI instead...

from the m340i touring to this is a big downgrade, but if you are constraint by the fucking government taxes and insurances, the 2.0 comes with a big up, including fuel economy way better
Why would you go for a new Station wagon though? When it comes to daily station wagons, the M340i is the pinacle of what the Automotive industry has to offer right now... I drive myself a Seat Cupra Station wagon (Price/Perf is amazing), but I would NEVER give up an M340i for a Cupra/Golf R... I mean my next car for 2026, if plans go right, is a m340i actually...
I do agree (as an R owner, though). M340i seems to be the best daily right now (for an enthusiast's single car). Personally I wish I had considered M340i a bit more, but I'm happy with the R due to maintenance costs that do not drain me that much :)
So your point was to come on here and state your opinion that the M340i is the greatest thing since sliced bread and everyone should drive one. Got it.
I think at this point VW finally managed to eliminate any remains of doubts I had whether the S3 is just a glorified Golf. There's just something so unsexy about the VW design, I'd get actually the Audi instead even if the tech underneath was worse.
