Nice video and good work figuring it out. Absolutely stunned that BMW Engineering decided not to apply machine screws in a door handle design. Wow. This retrofit requirement should put them to shame.
This video is great. I used a soldering iron to melt the plastic rivets and used the top of a beer bottle to smash it down. I've had the parts for 2 years and couldn't figure out how to do this, but did it in a little over an hour today.
Haha nice, that's one way to do it. They should use that technique at the factory.

just replaced the handle on a 2008 328i coupe. this video was a godsend; the 7/16 thread cutting nuts worked like a charm. i think the toughest/most nerve-racking part was reassembling the door after reconnecting the wires 🤣
Did you use the handle listed in the sedan parts list? The parts list from BMW for the coupe does not list it as a separate part. Dealer says I must replace complete door panel on my 2010 E92 which costs over $1K.

Just finished installing my door handle this video was so helpful. FYI I bought the part from Amazon and it came with inner and outer handles small screws to secure the handle to the door panel no jbweld needed bought from extreme amazing.

and lets just start by taking apart the entire vehicle so we can replace the door handle.
This was a great help in the install....even before contemplating the purchase. It was confusing in ordering the part...that there is actually 2 parts to the handle to replace the whole thing, and learned that from viewing your video prior to purchasing...it was a great tip! Also to order the trim pins, all couple of kinds as some will break off when removing the door panel.
Instead of gluing the tabs, use 7/16 thread cutting nut. Works much better and clean

Looking at doing this myself, this is a great suggestion. Is it a 7/16 hex or 7/16 stud size for these? The ones I'm finding for 7/16 have a stud size of 1/4".

By the way the Chinese replacements come with screws way easier...
This will become an expensive error if you have to remove the door handle again in the future. It would have been cheaper if you had used a hot melter to melt the plastic onto the door exactly the same as when from the factory. That way you can just drill it out again in the future to replace if necessary. JB weld epoxy will be difficult to remove from the panel and may damage the surface by hanging onto the surface too much.
I bought a replacement that just screwed in, way better than glueing or melting!

This and all the other videos I've seen start removing the fake wood trim piece from the latch side of the door. It's supposed to be removed starting at the hinge side so you don't break the catch on the back side of it.

I'm not sure where it went but saw a comment that someone used a soldering iron to melt the plastic and a (beer?) bottle to flatten the plastic down. Was thinking of something like this with either butane torch (with hot air attachment) or heat gun. Also thought screws but seems post would have to be cut and then now sure how much depth left to screw into. Thanks for this video!! Shame on BMW for doing it like this.

There's a ton of VDO about this but... I always choose the Bob Ross of E90 when I need to do some maintenance.
...of course I bought the part (from this link) like 2 years ago, but I've had a few chardonnays and now's the time.
Contrary to what all dealers and parts suppliers I talked to said, the sedan handle does fit the coupe and the install process is the same. In my case the handle did not come in cream beige which was the interior color but a can of color bond oversprayed over the sedan beige color solved the problem. Excellent color match.

My 328i handle became sticky from the alcohol hand sanitizer from Covid days. I was shocked that BMW uses such cheap imitation leather or whatever Made-In-China crap it is on the door handle; but more shocked over the unnecessary complexity in having to pry open the bloody door. It's like: Hello BMW, what's wrong with just 2 accessible bolts from the OUTSIDE of the panel to change the plastic door handle? Duh.

Thanks! Your vid made the process clear and straightforward. Without your help I would have probably broken something. Took less than an hour's work plus the JB weld setting time. I wonder if BMW has changed the material so it doesn't recur. Also, wonder why it happened only on front pass door,, not the others.
Glad you found it helpful! The drivers handle is made of a different material and the handles in the back (for sedan) are used less often. I think it's a result of the oil in your hands reacting with the material and not so much heat. The ones in the back of my car are both like new as they have hardly been used.

Disappointing the quality of the interior how it just starts melting. Also the lack of accessibility and having to take the whole door panel off to replace the door handle lol plus drilling etc, BMW really didn't want anyone fixing their cars and just to buy a new one. Really disappointing really being so obviously using cheap parts that melt and designing it as a once off the way they install it all (as you mentioned)

Thanks to this video I was able to replace the sticky door handle. For the plastic pins, I used a slightly different approach, melting them with a small butane torch's soldering tip attachment, and it worked pretty well. You can see it here: ruclips.net/video/rLP_DXFl2wE/видео.html

I need help. I replaced the speakers on the passenger side. Put the door back together and the inside handle does not work (very loose). Did I miss clipping something back. Everything else works perfectly other than trying to open the door from the inside. I would like to do the driver side but I want to fix passenger first.

I'm from the UK and need a left front door handle. can only find right ones which obv dont fit. do you know if the rear left handle is the same size/ fitting as the front left as i can find them...just
yes it's the size and it fits. You can do it
I just did this repair, thank you for this video BUT this is not the correct way to install the handle. The correct way is to heat the plastic and melt it back the way it came from the factory. You do this with a small torch. I used a rechargeable butane torch like the ones chefs use to burn creme brûlée. Cheap at Harbor Freight $18 but if you want the better one it's at the Home Depot $25. They don't sell the butane at HF but do at HD so just get the whole thing at HD. First time I got to use my plastic pry tool kit from Harbor Freight and its a total POS! Don't buy that one spend more.
It takes some patience but a combination of heating the plastic and some of the metal dowel you use to push the plastic stud down. The composite board on the door panel is very resistant to the heat. This was my first time doing it and it was very easy. Probably less than an hour if you have all the tools ready.
Mike Williams Thanks for the feedback, mine has held up fine without issue thus far. Others have used metal nuts that cut into the plastic also.
Thanks DIY. Yes I went to my local Home Depot and asked for the nuts but they didn't have that size. I think the melting is the best anyway. Not going to loosen or squeak etc. Make sure the handle is pressed well against the panel. Evening gentle I broke two of the dowels that go on the plastic "wood" trim. I did use JB weld for that:)

Not really I had to just wrap it in a cloth. It was super messy nothing cleaned it up for me.
Can we just sand the soft stuff away ugh mines is horrible gets on hands clothes 🤦🏾♀️

I wouldn’t be too worried, JB weld is basically industrial super glue. Like he said in the video it’s probably as good if not better than factory.
My only concern would be someone having to do this job again 10 years down the line and having to deal with removing the old handle held on by the JB weld, probably wouldn’t be too fun.

Eyden Ramirez I would expect it to last long term. If you're concerned sand the pegs of the door pins to make them rough so the JB weld has more surface area to grab on to.

Does the 2010 E92 Coupe use the same handle (51 41 7 230 854 Beige). It is not listed as a separate part on the BMW parts list.
As far as I could find they're the same for E90 or E92.

Can you switch the door handle with one of the ones in the back seats? Or will that one melt too?
You could, I found that the ones in the back of my car are like new. I think it's the oil from your hands that wears them out. So as long as there wasn't too much contact with the one in the back it should last a while.
They are all from the same material so they get the same problem. I noticed all of them got it, depending on how much there was a passenger holding it. The least exposed was the driver's, since you have your hand on the wheel.

Has ANYONE tried doing this on a BMW 328i Coupe AKA E92 ? The leather exterior part of the pull can be replaced but this inner plastic part seems to be part of the door panel and dealer is saying that I must replace the entire panel ! Anyone with any information please share!

Seems lazy. I did this a few years back and I used a bolt that I blowtorched to get hot enough and pressed it in. It worked nicely and quick.
