  • Baalwala, a lover of poetry and literature, recently visited Anarkali Bazaar in Lahore to reminisce about the great poets, writers, and storytellers who have contributed to the rich literary tradition of Punjab. As he traveled through the bustling bazaar, he immersed himself in the vibrant culture of the city and paid tribute to one of the greatest Punjabi poets, Amrita Pritam. Walking through the same streets that inspired Pritam's writing, Baalwala felt a deep connection to the past and was filled with a sense of reverence for the many artists who have made Lahore such a hub of creativity and expression. For him, this trip was a powerful reminder of the enduring power of literature to inspire and unite people across time and space.
Amrita Pritam (1919-2005) was a prominent Punjabi writer, poet, and novelist. She was the first woman to receive the Sahitya Akademi Award for her magnum opus, Ajj Aakhaan Waris Shah Nu (Today I Invoke Waris Shah), which is a poem about the Partition of India in 1947.
Pritam's literary works often dealt with themes of gender, identity, and the human condition. She was also a strong advocate for women's rights and was recognized as a feminist icon in India. Some of her other notable works include Pinjar (The Skeleton), Raseedi Ticket (Revenue Stamp), and Aapka Bunty (Yours Bunty).

Lahore was never secular but the other way around. The major difference is that the people of different religions lived peacefully in pre-colonial India and practiced their faiths to the fullest. At the same time art also flourished in various forms. When Britishers came, they ruined everything. They did the same thing here in North America too before USA independence in 1776.

By the way my father was also studying in university Law college in those days . He completed his LLb in 1967. He also used to live in few hostels but not sure which one was that. Once he pointed a building that was behind MAO college where he lived for sometime .

@@kamrankhaliq you are right, this law college hostel is behind MAO college and we had little bit of frictions with MAO students, we thought they are too retrogressive, learning Urdu, Farsi, and Arabic. I graduated in 1972 from law college, now practice law in USA. Few years ago, I took my elder son to show him law school and hostel but could not go any farther because it was dilapidated, needed lots of repairs and also a bad incident happened that day in Lahore.

Kudos brother! what a gifted documentary and tribute To Amrita. Being a tamil speaker who lived and grew up with Punjabis, Urdu speaking and hindustani speakers, mostly families of refugees in New Delhi, I was so touched by your sensitive narration. I went over your video twice. Do provide the places covered in the description box please. Keep up the good work, and bless you!

Sheer poetry in everything that you say. It was mesmerising to hear about Amrita Puritan from you. And you are so right. Our thoughts can't be divided. We are one and will always be one. Geographical borders can't divide the soul.
Will look forward to hearing about all the other poets and writers you mentioned.

@@faizasana1275 from what I’ve heard, they were the king’s illegitimate children. Once the king died, the new king wouldn’t support them, so they had to choose other means for survival. The king usually had the most beautiful woman, so their descendants (the women of hira mandi) were beautiful also. They were cultured and refined because they knew the ways of the courts.
