Why You SHOULD Visit Llandudno! - Seafront Tour, North Wales

- Llandudno is a coastal town in North Wales. It’s known for North Shore Beach and 19th-century Llandudno Pier, with shops and a games arcade. Northwest of town, the cliffs of Great Orme headland jut into the sea. Ancient tunnels lead to a cavern at Great Orme Mines. A 1902 tramway has an upper and lower section, and travels to the headland’s summit. To the east, smaller headland Little Orme is a nature reserve. In 2022 the Great Orme Tramway will celebrate its 120th anniversary, yet each year thousands of people still take immense pleasure in travelling to the summit of the Great Orme in an original early twentieth century tramcar. Others prefer to wind their way around the headland, admiring some of the most strikingly beautiful and dramatic scenery, which is visible only from the Marine Drive. This four mile shelf was cut out of the sheer limestone cliffs in 1878 and is designed for vehicles and walkers alike. Alternatively, it is possible to catch a bus in opposte the Pier and go on an informative and visually rewarding sight-seeing tour of the Orme.

Llandudno will always hold a special place in my heart. My parents met at the end of the pier back in 1969. They got married a year later and were together till they both died in 2018 ❤🏴
sorry to hear that
My mother loved Llandudno her last holiday was there in 2019 she died in 2020.
Sorry to hear that. Mo Jo. My mum and dad both loved Llandudno. Everytime I go back to visit I think of my parents. I have good memories. I'm sure you do to.
Your parents must have married when I was born and died when I would have been forty eight. Many times my parents took my brother Anthony and myself to Llandudno, and going there on holiday is time well spent. My father died ten years ago and Anthony is now an expat in Geneva, Switzerland.
So without llandudno.. There would be no you...
My beautiful home. I came here as a student thirty years ago and fell in love with this magnificent town. I never left.
So you went to Bangor?
The reason to visit Llandudno, is that it has a distinctive Victorian charm.
Also 98% of the land the town is built on, is owned by Lord Mostyn, its been like this since the late 16C.
Lord Mostyn lives permanently in London, but his land agents, Mostyn estates, rule llandudno with a rod of iron.
Any hotel or B&B that looks a little shabby, is told in no certain terms to do something about it, that's why the resorts famous North Parade looks so magnificent.
No ice cream or chip shop vendors or even amusements are allowed on its famous promenade, and the oldest Punch & Judy still operating in the Uk, the Codman family only recently gained permission for a permanent stand on the prom.
Richard Codman first arrived in town in 1851, and the family have been entertaining the visitors ever since, but actually sighting the show on the prom itself, was only granted recently.
llandudno is such a lovely resort, with an easy paced way of life, and its been my home town for 23yrs, and i love it.
I have the privilage to live in Llandudno, my family having lived here for around 150 years. Its always great to see videos like this one showing the town at its best. Diolch yn fawr iawn i ti (thanks very much to you)
Thanks Graham , means a lot
Hi looking to stay in hotel with 12 year old do you know best hotel can spend £100
My family and I are visiting your beautiful part of the world in July and I can't wait for it
I spent most family holidays in Llandudno and loved it .We used to take the open topped tram from the Little Orm to the town,so exciting .When I was 18 I worked as Assistant to the Manager, Mrs Carter of the Grand Hotel. I loved it ,a lot of the waiting and kitchen staff were from Italy. We all went to see the Welsh National Opera perform Nabucco in the town.
Fantastic, lots of Bravos etc and we were invited to the last night party, lots of singing a d dancing .Wonderful memories.
A rare thing to find a welsh speaker in Llandudno...my family were from Trefor, the quarry village and I miss visiting since theyve passed.
It's nostalgia time again ....
Way back in the 1960s, there used to be a ferry service from Liverpool to LLandudno; if you didn't want to stop here, you could stay on to Bangor, but most people would disembark at the LLandudno pier for a few hours; there would even be time to take the tram to the top of the Great Orme. This service enabled a relatively cheap day out during the school summer holidays when one parent, usually the mother, had to provide entertainment for her bored children.
I don't know when the ferry service ceased to be in business but I can clearly recall being with my girlfriend (later my wife) on top of the Great Orme listening to Alan "Fluff" Freeman host Radio 1's Pick Of The Pops on my transistor radio. By the time we returned to Llandudno to catch the ferry, Alan concluded the show with The Rolling Stones' Jumping Jack Flash, so that dates it to the summer of 1968.
Wow thanks fir sharing Anthony
Must have been 1950's we went on St Tudno from end of pier to somewhere in Liverpool. Remember big funnels!
As a Gen Z kid, I've only ever known most of the UK's old seaside resorts as run-down shadows of what they used to be, but Llandudno seems to have avoided that decline. It is really nice that we have this preserved old resort town to enjoy even today, and I can vouch that the cable car is definitely worth a go.
agree
Exactly. I’ve just visited Llandudno for the first time and was really pleasantly surprised at how it has retained its character. Good shops and restaurants lots to do, transport rallies, views from the Great Orme, attracts a nice crowd
@@proudofyourroots9575 I've been to Barnstaple.
They haven't declined. Seaside tourism expands every year. There's nothing special about Llandudno; it doesn't have the visitors many resorts have.
Llandudno didn't go hell for leather to attract as many people as possible, I think, so it never became tacky and overdeveloped like Blackpool and Weston-super-Mare.
Somehow it's kept its Victorian charm and the people are friendly and welcoming, which isn't always the case in larger resorts
Llandudno a really beautiful place I love to sit on the pier and watch the world go by it really is my happy place
I am very lucky to live here in Llandudno. Such a great video 😀👍🏻
My Honeymoon Town in 1978!
Stunning Town fabulous views.
My Hubby his Granddad born Conwy Family lived in Llandudno.
Now my Son and his family live in Deganwy.
My Father was a Policeman in Llandudno from around 1962 until around 1968. He is 86 now and has plenty of old stories. He remembers The Beatles playing at the Palladium. Was born there back in 1965 lived near West Shore.Still my favourite place in the UK.
mine too
I believe the reason Llandudno has retained its charm (unlike other seaside towns) is because a local law was past back in the 1800s preventing any kind of trading along the promenade other than hotels, not even an ice-cream can be sold on the prom, the arcades and fair rides etc are gathered on the pier. The nicest seaside town in the UK.
agree
Nahh …. Tenby is the nicest
@@SuperGilly71 Tenby is significantly smaller & less connected tho
That’s interesting. It’s a shame the beach is grade one rock climb.
Tenby is ok if you like bingo !
I'm literally on holiday with family in Llandudno. I've been coming with family ever since I was small and I absolutely love it! Thanks for making this video. Wales needs more appreciation and love
Great video, I'm from neighbouring Colwyn Bay and the council took a different approach with our beach in recent years, they turned it into a permanent beach by raising its level with sand pumped in from the seabed a little further out to sea, it's a much better solution to pebbles and has made the beach here really popular again like being back in the 70's when Colwyn Bay was a much more popular destination than it is now. This approach would look amazing on Llandudno's North Shore, my favourite local beach is Llandudno's West Shore though, amazing when the tide is all the way out (and it goes out a LONG way!)
Yes I heard the reasons, thanks for watching mark
Wales is just stunning 😍 👌

Great video as always Tim, many happy memories visiting Llandudno, my great great grandfather was a lighthouse keeper on the Great Orme , nice to see people enjoying a well preserved traditional seaside resort still, beautiful !!!
Yes Shame all resorts can't be like this
The stone circle represents that the Eisteddfod Genedlaethol Cymru ( National Eisteddfod of Wales ) was held in Llandudno. Many local people speak Welsh. The Great Orme is called Pen Y Gogarth in Welsh and has Sant Tudno' s Church. The pier BTW used to have ships that went to the Isle of Man.
Thanks for the info Martin
Diolch am y gwybodaeth. Fideo diddorol. Wy'n erioed wedi bod i Landudno.
Many thanks for your excellent video.
Absolutely love Llandudno.
Has somehow managed to keep it's Edwardian elegance, probably due to the many rigorously enforced regulations regarding the seafront by the organisation that owns most of the place, Mostyn Estates.
Only certain colours you can paint your hotel. No neon signs. No burger bars. No amusement arcades. No bingo halls. Etc etc and I for one, absolutely applaud them.
Also the Victorian/ Edwardian Extravaganza that happens every early May Bank Holiday weekend is truly excellent, with the highlight for me, being the procession of vintage vehicles that takes up to three hours to pass by, going along the Marine Drive on the Sunday afternoon.
I shall be there this Sunday and am already looking forward to it after a couple of years gap.
Llandudno and Mostyn Estates, I salute you.
Cheers.
Sounds good

I moved to Wales 3 years ago. I overlook the breathtakingly beautiful Brecon Beacons … I have fallen in love with Wales ..
My first seaside holiday was in Ryll the second Llandudno. I was only 10 or 11.I loved going on the open-top of the tram. One year we got on a boat at the end of the pier which cruise d to Puffin Island and back ,I think it was called the St Tudno. If I rember right the boat also went from there to Douglas in the Isle of Man.
Later I worked as a receptionist at the Craigside Hydro near the Little Orme ,it was already very dated. Then I worked at the Grand Hotel which I loved.Every afternoon an orchestra would play in the lounge. So sad to see it's decay. Once I went with the man that ran the boat trips when he went to Conway for a part for his boat, it was very, very rough going round the Great Orme, I was glad the coastguard was there as it was scary with tide running. Thank you for bringing back happy memories.
Love Llandudno, I go all the time. The other side is really pretty as well. Some beautiful beaches and amazing views of wales. Love going that side for a quiet day with a picnic :)

Visited family up here a few times each year - felt very nostalgic. Remember the Palladium when it was a cinema. Also remember the takeway right by the Orme Tram station and was 3 mins walk from aunt's flat.
Miss the place, just hated the long ride north as a kid in back of the car for hours.
YESSSS!!! One of my favorites places. Hugely underated.

I visited Llandudno many many years ago, Tim. The town boasts the longest pier, and I recall catching a pretty large passenger ship, harboured at the end of said pier, to Douglas, Isle of Man. Also, I have great memories of sitting at the top of Great Orme's head, watching the red arrows display. Cheers, Tim 👍😊
Oh yes back in the day .. shame they stopped that
Yes I remember getting a ferry from llandudno pier to Douglas Isle of man in the 1970s great memories. Thanks for the tour.👍
Longest pier? Southend-on-Sea's is more than three times its length. Llandudno is fifth.
96 per cent of the pier's customers are from England. And 90 per cent of its revenue comes from the pier entrance - that will be much higher when the new pavilion eventually becomes reality... after 30 years.
i went there for the day last august and i was blown away how beautiful the place is ,ive never been there before and its lovely family resort ,not like blackpool or rhyl ,i loved it .
No rhyl was good and has a great beach
So lovely to see Llandudno, happy family holidays here back in the day. Must get back soon!

Wow, what a gem Llandudno is! Lots to entertain people, especially a transport nerd like me! Shows what you can do with a seaside resort in this country. Rhyl, take note!
Yes come on rhyl
Problem is, when locals have their say most can only compare to Rhyl and one or two others as they haven't travelled in their own country. Rhyl was never anything like Llandudno, so it's a pointless comparison.
Love your video from Wales. I have wonderful memories of Wales in 1986 and 1987 which I look back with fondness and joy.
Glad you enjoyed it
Hi Tim. This is one of my favourite places to visit in Wales. Many happy memories here. I've even stopped in the Lighthouse for a night. I'm not sure if it is still a B&B. There is a lot of prehistoric history on the Great Orme. Old mines etc. Which are fascinating. Lots of great fish and chip places, but have to watch out for the seagulls if you eat them on the front lol. Thanks Tim. I love your walks. It's like being there with you.
thanks Steve, loads more coming from Wales :-)
That was excellent Tim. One to go on my would like to visit list..
You should!
We are going to Llandudno this fall, what a wonderful sneak peek at the beautiful place! We will be staying right there near the pier. Can’t wait! Thank you for the tour!
You are welcome Judy, thank for watching
Love it there. The old train up the Great Orme is nerve-wracking and the old mine is a great place to visit. The main drag reminds me a lot of Southport.
:-)
Love Llandudno just got back last week. The Mostyn family used to own the town and they told everyone they had to have the same colours on their buildings. Well something like that the street behind the prom is called Mostyn street
Thanks matt
Great memories there Tim i stayed there a few times during the 80's when i was young in the Grand Hotel when it was Butlins owned and i loved the red coats and my family enjoyed the entertainment they had on. I got my first computer there it was a Commodore 16 yes 16 not the 64 lol. I went to the wrestling somewhere there and met Big Daddy and Giant Haystacks and all the rest of the Saturday World Of Sport TV ones during the 80's it was brilliant i was on the cable cars and also the tram thanks for bringing me back to happy times with my family sadly my mum died 18 years ago she would love to see this i will let my dad see it he will enjoy this as this resort was his favourite holiday destination thanks again Tim top man.
Thanks for watching, big daddy omg memories
Just got back from my holiday there,
Went up the great Orme and could see soo much of the north Welsh coast,
Such a wonderful town
N. Wales has some beautiful places, it's just let down by its rainy weather.
I remember going to butlins in Pwllheli as a kid and was forced to spend the entire time in the arcade due to the weather.
By end of the holiday I was Britain's number 3 at air hockey.
lol
keeps the kids quiet
I didn't know there were ever air hockey rankings in Britain. Bury was planning to hold a national championship and a UK Air Hockey Association was registered for it. And the World Crazy Golf Championships held some short Saturday afternoon side tournaments in Hastings, but that's about it, I thought.
The Council should be really proud of themselves. The way they have kept this place is amazing. It really is a nice place to go. They have lots of interesting activities going on throughout the holiday season too. If you're one of those tattoo covered fatties who likes to drink a lot (usually found at Rhyl) it's really not the place for you. Maybe the tourist board should take advice from the people who run this place and sort out the so called tourist attractions further up the coast.
Good points
Whilst I'm sure the council might indeed have had a part to play in how the town has managed to somehow keep it's Edwardian elegance, I'd argue it has more to do with most of the place being owned and managed by The Mostyn Estates which has very specific rules regarding such things as what limited colours you may paint your seafront hotel, no neon signs, no bingo halls, amusement arcades or burger bars on the prom etc etc and which are rigidly enforced.
And I for one agree wholeheartedly with that being the case.
Long may it be the way it is and then it can continue to attract the clientele that appreciates that ambiance.
@@dancedecker Thank you, I didn't know that.
@@ramalama9650 You are most welcome. Happy to help.
Mostyn estates and Conwy council actually suck balls. Try living here and seeing how your taxes are used.

wow!
We are going next week
The last time I went there was 1961 on a friends works coach trip, we were both still teenagers. From the view of the bay it looks exactly the same as it did then. Unfortunately we went on a Sunday in the days of extreme Welsh Sunday Observant laws. More or less everything was closed. I still say it has one of the most picturesque bays in the whole of Wales even after 60 plus years since my visit.
Oh wow .. yes when Sundays were boring
Great video Tim beautiful place last visited as a child still as lovely thankyou 😁😁😘😘
Glad you enjoyed it

First visited Llandudno back in 1984 whilst on holiday in Colwyn Bay. Can just remember the pier pavilion theatre which was next to the Grand hotel. The Palladium was a cinema before turned into a pub. One of my favourite resorts and alway find something new each time I go.
Agree I love this place
I was born in Llandudno and live in Deganwy a short 5 minute drive away, I absolutely love seeing videos of my home town bring backs so many memories when I see the pier as I use to dance there as a child in the Pier Pavilion sadly that is not with us anymore.. Thank you so much for sharing this with us.
you are welcome
There is going to be a new pavilion now that pier owner Adam Williams has acquired the site.
I think the consistency of the architecture might be to do with the Mostyn Estate owning most of the land in Llandudno. I don't live too far away and it's definitely one of my favourite places to visit on the North Wales coast. Rhyl on the other hand...
Could be right
lovely victorian buildings going soon hope weather is nice right about the B&Bs all getting full
I hate to say it but probably the iron grip of Mostyn Estates has kept it the great resort it still is when most others have gone to the dogs. It's pity though that Conwy Council have allowed some very dubious architecture over the past 30 years.
Thanks for a great tour of Llandudno Tim. I first visited in the resort as a child in 1966 but I can barely remember anything from that holiday. We stayed in the Plas Marina Hotel which is no longer there. My Dad used to talk about the lovely Alice in Wonderland display in Happy Valley which sadly was destroyed in a storm later that year and never replaced, although as you pointed out, there are still plenty of links to Alice to be found. Our family holidayed many times in Llandudno in the 60s and 70s, staying in the Jenivore Hotel (when it was run by Mrs Barlow) and later in the Somerset Hotel on the prom (Mr Winter managed it then). I came back to Llandudno in 2001 with my own family for a week in the Dunoon Hotel, and in many subsequent years we holidayed there again or in cottages close by, but always visiting Llandudno. I can understand how some visitors fall in love with the area - the town, the Great Orme and the beaches will always hold fond memories for me. This year I will be holidaying with my family in Tenby, another Welsh gem of a resort which has been mentioned in other comments. However, Llandudno is very special place and I hope to visit again soon.
thanks for sharing Richard
Good advice, I lived in Scotland for 6 years back in early 2000's, I've been to Wales three times. You gave me a good tip for a trip
Glad you enjoyed it
Hi Tim, thanks for taking us up the Great Orme, my late dad lived in Anglesey, and when I used to visit him ( I live in Manchester) he used to say one day we'll take a trip up the Orme, but unfortunately he passed away before we got to do it, so at least now I know what it's like up there, thanks for that🌞🌞👍
sorry to hear that :-(
It is certainly a nice place for a day trip. The "Grand" Hotel does need a date with the demolition experts though. The cable car is rarely open, it doesn't like wind and it tends to be windy. If it is running, it's a spectacular must do. Also check out the Ski Centre and toboggan on the Orme. Llandudno is near many other nice places. Hope you have Conwy, Beaumaris, Caernarfon, Llandwyn and some of the Anglesey towns in the pipeline.
:-) thought so thanks Philip

Havnt been here since I was in year 6 at school, so 28 years ago roughly, so many memories, definitely need to take my children this year
Llandudno is an absolutely beautiful place to stay. It holds very special memories for me, and I love visiting here at least once a year.
I've stayed in a few of the seafront hotels and every one of them is as beautiful inside as they are outside.
I've also stayed in the Grand Hotel when it was owned by Butlins and had a great time in there. However, guess what? It's now owned by Britannia Hotels so I don't need to tell you what's happened to it since they took over, especially as it's a another listed building they own.
The pier is amazing and a lovely walk on a sunny day. There used to be a tall slide which in the summer months, people would climb up the frame of it and dive in to the water below!
Infront of the hotel there used to be The Pier Pavillion but that burnt down in 1996 and the site has been left derelict ever since. Some of the supports are still standing but it's just an empty space, and because it (along with The Grand Hotel) both have listed status with CADW it limits what can be done on the site. There have been many plans submitted but none have got approval so Conway Council periodically clean the site and send the bill to the landowner.
Oh wow thanks for sharing I didn't release it was owned by Britannia
@@WalkWithMeTim They seem to like buying hotels with Grand or Castle in the title, and then ruining them!
It was lovely hotel when Butlins had it. Every room was spotless, the entertainment was brilliant and the staff too.
Perhaps you could do a Vlog of the Grand Hotel and add it to your "Worst Hotels in the UK" list!
The old Pier Pavilion site has been bought by the owner of the pier so there's hope for the future of it.
@@BereniceLydia Adam Williams owns Llandudno Pier but Alan Waldron owns the Pavillion site, and has submitted plans to build 50 apartments and a restaurant on it.
How Conwy Council have approved these plans god only knows as it is a Listed site, so in theory the building should be re-instated. This sounds like a few brown envelopes have been passed around to get this application through. Also, 50 apartments means at least 50 cars need to be parked somewhere, and as there is nowhere to park around that area, this should be fun watching the arguments after it is built!
Adam Williams has submitted a "call-in", basically an objection, because the original plans submitted in 2018 have been amended.
Adam is threatening to close the pier because he says he will have to reduce the hours the pier will be open because the apartment residents will object to the noise.
The £20million development is currently on hold whilst the objection is heard.
Love Wales. Beautiful part of England I think I've been to Conwy. Great views even nice in the sun . I've read that great orme have ancient tunnels that lead to a cavern, sounds interesting.
Wales and England are two different countries 🤣 Conwy is lovely 🙂
Anyone Welsh would be annoyed ....Wales and England are separate countries.... But part of Great Britain and u k...
Yes some brilliant exploration there
Lol
Have been there three years ago. Beautiful place, the Great Orme tram was nice, we didn't have the best of weather but wouldn't have want to miss it. Llandudno is very nice , lots of flowers everywhere and spectaculair views over the bay.
It really is!
Those rocks / pebbles are big but the colors are pretty Tim. Lovely views and lots to see. Beautiful sea .Fun for everyone there. Fish and chips Tim.😋
yum yum
I absolutley love llandudno. A beautiful place to visit, and so well kept, theres loads to do for all ages too BUT…….. the seagulls are a nightmare!!!! They are vicious things stealing food and harassing people, they need to be culled, you have to hide to eat anything !!
Plus something needs to to done to the Britania Hotel at the side of the pier, it lets llandudno down, what a mess and an eyesore!! Such a beautiful building just being left to rot away, such a shame, probably the only thing that lets llandudno down☹️
Yes but you get those crazy gulls everywhere
Herring gulls or on the endangered list.
@@basylpeterjones never said they wernt! But they are still a nuisance!
Thank you for this video it gave me so much pleasure. I visited this lovely town many many times in the 60s and 70s as a child and then later with my own children. We used to go up the Great Orme and have the whole place to ourselves (apart from the sheep) as it only had a shop a pub and a small playground then. Have been on the cable cars many times also it is beautiful up there! Thank you again
thanks for watching and the nice comment remember to subscribe
Have done! I have poor mobility so these videos take me on journeys I couldn't make otherwise 🏖🎠
My wife and i ate a couple of times in the Palladium Wetherspoons. Food was very nice but was very busy and staff struggled to keep up with cleaning. Still a good time was had.
well you shouldn't. no public showers, no toilets, Colwyn Bay is far better(Porth Eirias). Llandudno is more of a "no beach day", cable car ride, promenade stroll, fish and chips with view
Fantastic place, i was there 2 years ago and really enjoyed it. The buildings were magnificent and had that old world victorian charm about the place.
Couldn't agree more!
