      I wonder what a more expensive room looks like. Probably larger, but I would expect the same stains, but a larger bed, I'd guess. Exposed pipes are because the building was built without much plumbing, and they just couldn't add it in the walls, or it was lead pipes.

    I've said this before, but these old Grand Hotels are just too big with too many rooms. Back in the day when labour was a lot cheaper, they would probably have had hundreds of staff looking after the building and guests. They just can't do that now. I also dread to think what the cost would be to completely renovate such a large hotel, it is probably not even economically viable! I don't fully understand why Britannia even buy them, or what their long term intention is! Great review though, and yes, Llandudno is a truly lovely place😀

    • @infrasleep

      Maybe the land can be used to build on or the hotel converted into luxury flats after Britannia have proved the Hotels are beyond repair/unviable. I'm more and more wondering what the story is behind these Britannia hotels. The impression I get for each of them is that _someone_ along the chain of responsibility cares about getting it back into shape, but they're not getting the (financial?) support they need for structural works, so they can't do much more than patching things up here and there.
    Perhaps it would be interesting to do a "the story behind" sort of video at some point, and dive into where the problem lies?

    • @RushfanUK
      @RushfanUK 2 года назад +17

      Nobody cares, the company is run by one man only, they have huge staffing and management turnover, carry out surface renovations but never really deal with issues such as roofs and structure which is why so often you see damp everywhere, all that matters is making a profit any way possible. Things like the linen trolleys and equipment being left out is because when they take over a hotel they will quite often turn storage rooms and linen rooms into guest bedrooms to squeeze as much out of a building as possible, as an environment to work in it very quickly sucks the life out of you as you are constantly battling the lack of staff and guest dissatisfaction.

    This used to be a hotel owned by Billy Butlin. Yes, grand in its day, but that was a good few years ago. Originally, it would have had next to no ensuite rooms, which is something everyone expects nowadays, even in the cheapest rooms. Hence the additional pipework. The hotel must been adapted many times since it opened. Good honest assessment of the facilities. You brought all the right things to light. Those windows were disgusting. I was in Llandudno for a day trip with my sister and she showed me this hotel which she'd stayed in the past. We went onto one of the balconies where Tim went. It was extremely hot that day and the sea view was magnificent. When I went to the bar I noticed how old everything was and even if new it would still look awful as the hotel is very tired looking. It needs a complete overhaul. But bet they can't afford it! We went down to the ground floor overlooking the sea and it was quite shabby with a cheap and nasty looking cafe! I wouldn't stay there if they paid me!
    We then went to view another hotel further down from The Grand looking onto the promenade. The St George's hotel a very upmarket hotel completely immaculate. So different and more my style any day! We peaked into the dining room and they had the most wonderful setting with damask covered chairs and tables. That is how a real hotel should look! They also had their coffee afternoon tea section which to our disappointment was fully booked! Superb decor and if you check out their rooms online you'll be stunned by the quality! So if I stay over in this resort I'll be staying here for my creature comforts. and it is literally 1/2 a mile from the Grand Hotel.

    I was very surprised to not hear you talk about how this used to be a Butlins Holiday Hotel. After Butlins decided to just concentrate on the camps, they sold the hotels to a company called Grand Hotels Limited who were subsequently bought out by Britannia. The Blackpool Metropole and Grand Hotel Scarborough were also old Butlins hotels and it doesn't seem they have changed much since then. Sadly the best 2 Butlins hotels, Ocean Hotel Brighton and Grand Hotel Margate, are both long gone with the former being luxury apartments and the later having being knocked down to build flats (an absolute scandal as it was an iconic building!). It would be cool to see you do a tour of all the remaining ex-Butlins hotels.

It seems from your video, it's as bad now as it was then. Nothing seems to have changed, it remains dated, grotty and neglected. If the right owners had that hotel, it could be turned into a stunning place, taking advantage of its stunning location

    While it is sad to see how these old historic building are falling into disrepair and Brittanias mismanagement is worsening their decline, I think it was honestly inevitable for many of these buildings with or without Brittania. Seaside location and old huge buildings are always going to end in destruction unless massive amounts of cash are injected to their upkeep, which might not be a sound investment for most businesses. I certainly think there should be an effort to maintain these buildings (with or without Brittania) but unfortunately the fiscal reality of that is grim these days

If you’re in Llandudno on a weekend break a hotel like this can ruin your trip better off at a bnb much smaller and easier to maintain. Six minutes in the room and we left (just going to watch that video next), but we were stuck in the middle of nowhere, no idea where to go. So I googled The Grand Hotel, Llandudno, because I used to holiday in North Wales, knew the area well, but had never stayed there. There were two adults, two childrens, so we ended managed to get a room with double and a single, and one of the turret rooms. It was a bit neglected, but apart from paint flaking off and damp, the rest was beautiful.
    To me, it's a snapshot of a byegone era. Very Twilight Zone, but has character. We all enjoyed it, and would stay again. The area is amazing.
