  • This is one of four videos we filmed on our trip to Southern California. We went out with Brian Norris of Fin Fetish Charters out of Marina Del Rey, California on an overnight island fishing trip. The California Channel islands are a popular destination for offshore fishermen in California, as they hold a wide variety species such as rock fish, yellowtail, halibut, white sea bass and more. We were fishing an area where squid were spawning, so we ended up catching hundreds of squid for both live bait and to eat. Squid are nocturnal and feed at night, so we use lights under our boat to attract them. We used both dip nets and a giant two pole net to scoop up the squid. These squid are called market squid and are the same squid used both for bait and what end up in a restaurant.

Nice guys!!! I love calamari! Back years ago before the hurricane tore up the Okaloosa pier here in the panhandle of Florida they had lights under the pier and the squid would come in so thick. No special jig needed just a shiny spoon worked great.

I've caught them many times off the docks/piers here in Washington. Clean them up and cut into rings is pretty easy. I don't batter mine, I just toss in some flower with a bit of garlic powder in it, fry for 30 seconds, pull them out sprinkle with a bit of salt and a squeeze of lime or lemon and chow time. I have a hard time getting any...my wife and daughter eat them so fast it's unreal.

Boil the whole squid with zatarans and make a good tartar sauce, pop off the heads slice down the middle and clean the inside out. The skin comes off in your hands. But after cooking ice them right dow!! So many ways soooooo good
