- This is the second part of an overnight fishing trip aboard fin fetish charters out of marina del rey, california. We went offshore to fish the channel islands of California, namely Santa Cruz and Santa Rosa islands. Our goal was to fish squid beds and catch California Halibut and White Sea bass. We got into the most insane wide open White Sea bass bite I have ever witnessed! We caught our limit of White Sea bass and even managed to release 12! Hope you enjoy this catch clean cook. White sea bass were fished to near extinction back in the day, but California has a hatchery system now that has rebounded the species.

Obviously they aren't endangered anymore. These guys wouldn't be catching them to cook them. But only to release them
For this that may not know, in the 80’s the white SeaBass (not a bass but a croaker) numbers we’re dwindling down and over 30 years ago the Ocean Resources Enhancement and Hatchery Program in Conjunction with Sea World started to raise thousands of juvenile white SeaBass started from small fry and released them when they were over a foot long and this has undoubtedly saved the species and has allowed anglers across Southern California to enjoy fishing for this species again.
That is badass. I don't ever hear of any hatchery programs in Florida, but it seems like the whole west coast has them. especially with salmon and trout species.
@@LandsharkOutdoors a lot of these hatcheries were put in place during the hydroelectric boom. Goal was to compensate run losses.

Actually, what really saved the species was the ban of inshore gillnets in 1994. The effect of hatcheries is debated. Previous studies determined that the hatchery efforts were unsuccessful. Currently unpublished findings by the hatchery itself indicate the hatcheries may be successful, but many believe these findings to be suspicious and the study is yet to be published. The new findings should be looked at with skepticism.
Next time you are out on the W. Coast you should look into going to the hatchery for WSB in Carlsbad. You need to schedule a reservation but the facility is epic.
Otoliths are the fishes ear bone. You can also tell the age of the fish from the otoliths. Being a calcified structure they grow faster in warmer conditions like summer and slower in colder conditions like winter. This leads to the layers being more compact in winter and more dispersed in summer- much like the growth rings in a tree.

@LandsharkOutdoors to talk about lucky, the only legal white seabass I ever caught was on a full day overnight trip on the thunderbird back when it was originally at Davey's locker, early 90s, we were fishing big 6x jigs dead stick on the bottom with live squid pinned on, it was around 30 lbs, with about 40 people on the boat and I was the only one to get one.
Caught several juveniles in Newport bay where one of the hatcheries is, but that big legal is a rarity.
The only way to get one is to be lucky enough to be on the boat when one of these bites happen, which requires luck, Intel, or just being able to afford going out all the time to raise your chances.
I have never been on a boat when a wide open WSB happened. Nowyellowing, albacore, bluefin yellowtail, Mahi, sand bass, calico bass is another story,
unreal bite man, i really knew nothing about these fish (being an east coast angler) and I am definitely going to have to take a trip for these guys in the future! keep up with the amazing content man, love all ur vids!

I've been dying to catch me some Ling Cod and Halibut. I've caught quite a few flounder while I lived in Florida, but nothing like the Halibut they catch out on the West Coast. I fished in Long Beach Harbor once, but I was on my honeymoon and I bought some cheap spinning combos from Walmart while I was out there, so I only had a medium rod and reel and 12 lb test. It's not like I could catch anything worthwhile...lol I'm from Pittsburgh btw...

Another awesome video! I went after White Sea Bass in CA a few years ago but I tried to get them while spearfishing. I managed to get just one in 3 days of diving. I cannot believe how many you guys caught! However, it seems that you guys were in the right spot. Loved the way you prepared the fish and as always your culinary skills are outstanding. Nice family dinner to cap it all off.

I am happy you made it to the west coast Victor. The Channel Island are one of my favorite places to fish locally. Sometimes those White Sea Bass come up dead after the fight. I am glad you could release some. It was a good season here last year for White Sea Bass. Since Fish and Game have been hatching them and releasing them in Oxnard they have been coming back strong and big! Keep the videos coming. They are awesome.

Hi Vic that was an awesome bite reminds me of a red drum bite we go on back in the late 1990's on a head boat I was working on out of NC only problem was as we were federal waters not state waters we could not keep any of them. Our 40 customers were mad that we stopped them from fishing and threw close to 35 red drum back in the water after our captain explained how much the fine would be for each fish they were OK with it.
Red drum remind of these sea bsss, but I’d say the drum dig a lot more. Sounds like a crazy bite you were on!
Wsb make one initial run then they just come up, nothing like a yellowtail as you have experienced, but they eat better as a cooked flakey white fish, but you can't beat yellowtail raw

Nice ghost, that’s a prized catch in these parts! The trouble is just finding where they’re holding and having that spot not be too thick in the kelp beds. Looks like you guys followed the squid lights?
We catch them from the surf when the squid are near shore and a king tide comes in around some kelp.
We were fishing squid beds and at night there were a lot of commercial squid boats by us

Great video Victor. I live in Southern California. I have a trip planned for August 21 to the Channel Islands for white seabass and after watching your video. I'm so excited for my chance at a whopper seabass. I've been fishing San Diego lately and been very successful with bluefin tuna and our yellowtail. But never really targeted white seabass, so I am so excited to try my best to make it happen. Thanks for sharing. This video has got me more excited about my trip to the Channel Islands. those stones look like the ones we find in our fresh water "drum" here in eas tennessee i'm sure they are in the salt water drum too,, just look for em.. try microwaving asparagus,, cut to length & rinse with cold water,, wrap/roll in paper towel after salting & adding some pats of butter & garlic powder one bunch takes 2-3 minutes comes out al dente' & beautiful!! & quick & delicious!! (may have to adjust time a bit for different microwaves).. great video!!
The first time I saw a freshwater drum was at a lock on the Mohawk river and I thought " it looks alot like a white seabass ". Yep a close cousin. I wondered about the stones and you just confirmed it.

Impressive White Sea Bass bite! I once worked at a WSB grow out facility in Redondo Beach, Ca. Once the fish achieved a certain length and were tagged, they were released into Redondo Harbor with long term hopes of re-populating the Palos Verdes Peninsula, Santa Monica Bay and perhaps even enhancing the Catalina Island area.

A once in lifetime bite hahah
We started doing hatchery back in the 90's in Santa Barbara CA. Kicking the gill nets off the coast was what really helped the seabass, same with the halibut. The great whites really came back in big numbers too. A lot more people fished in the 80's and 90's before the depth restriction, MLPA's and winter rockfish closer in the early 2000's. Something like a 60% drop in fishing license sales from mid 80's to today. 1.8 million to 800k I'm a bit off but it's close. Also, in SB we had 4 party boats then it went to 1 now it's back up to 2 and we always had live bait available 7 days a week 365 days a year now there isn't any available regularly. Unfortunately, you have to be a multi-millionaire to live in SB so I had to leave the state 10 years ago I'm still bitter about it lol. Awesome trip you had California has a lot to offer on the fishing side.
My fishing days in California were in the 70s and 80s - so seeing this is mind-blowing.

@@LandsharkOutdoors The black sea bass were few and far between for a long time seems like they have made a bit of a comeback which is really cool to see. I used to pinhead on the dive party boats out of SB we would go to Anacapa Island and dive with the black seabass they were huge. Fishing on my dad's boat we had one come up and eat a 15lb yellowtail it had to have been 300lbs. Living there you kind of forget about them because they are so rare but now and then we would hook one and just get destroyed. Santa Barbara is an amazing place to fish out of too although pretty much fish the same islands but better coastal fishing imo. Next time you and Brook are in California you should check out SB or take a drive up to Morro Bay and Avila go up Highway 1 absolutely beautiful there and great places to eat. Love you and Brooks channels, so cool to see California getting recognition. Oh yeah you need to get out to San Miguel Island too if you haven't already.

Going on my FIRST fishing trip (since I was like 10) in a week or so and I'm stoked! Quaint river fishing here in the UK , very different from this but still. So excited.
Hi there. Like Ure channel. Yes we also get them winter time with our yearly sardine run. We call them geelbek cob. They pass following the sards also in schools. And yes it's so epic that u loose Ure gaffs under all the fish. But also we only allowed to keep two per licence holder. And they are fighters. Also the prodical sons or kobia in the mix. Nice to see that they travel following the shoaling sards and squid. Weldone on Ure channel. U Brooke and Ryan are my son's best utubers. Thanx guys

The only other fish I’ve heard of getting stones like that from are freshwater drum. I’ve caught several around the 3LB mark and they have stones just as big or bigger than those! I’d be interested to see if redfish or black drum have them as well!
I think all fish have them, just some are more pronounced than others

99% of people won’t even try harvesting their own food regardless of what it is.
They know nothing about what it takes to do it and don’t deserve any kind of apology! You pay for whatever licenses that it requires, keep other families fed from your purchases of gear, tackle, boats and tons of other expenses that go unseen. Not to mention it’s work and with all the hours of not catching fish and time invested, it’s probably the the most expensive fish you will ever eat!
It’s the love of reconnecting with our innate abilities of feeding ourselves from nature’s bounty! I love watching your show and am happy for your success.

Only WSB I've ever caught was in Oceanside Harbor on a dropper loop with shrimp. Hatchery sized (about 12"). You got it spot on with how they tap baits. Felt like a mackerel or shiner perch but when I set the hook, felt like I'd hooked into the pier pilings. Great vid

Caught 3 of those in Panama only kept one hands down the best fish I've ever tasted, had no idea they were rare. We asked the hotel to cook it, they kept most of the fish 😂 gave us each one serving. A once in a lifetime experience loved every minute of it.
I won’t forget seeing Instagram posts from charter boats up in Oxnard hooking up on some giant white sea bass since like April and even catching a few now as well as some mahi and tuna on 3/4 days. Really hoping to catch a lifetime fish if I get on the water next week. Still hoping to fish Channel Islands some day though

this must have been that hot bite from 2-3 weeks ago, i missed out cuz i only get to fish weekends, and of course with all the weekend warrior armchair capts out on the water, doesnt make for a great time on the water. glad you got to experience the highs of chasing the ghosts, because most times its a huge let down like bft fishing

This fish looks very similar to what we Aussies call a Mulloway. They are very elusive and hard to catch. One of the best table fish I've ever eaten. Recreational fishing rules where I am is you are only allowed to keep 1 fish per person per day and has to be over 70cm.

Yup. Up here on the northern tip of Vancouver Island, I've heard guys say when they got 100 to 150 pound halibut onboard that were alive, they would destroy the boat. They always said to harpoon them in the head first before bringing them onboard.

So what you guys were cutting out of the head is basically like the ear bone You can actually age a fish by by getting a cross-section of it and counting the rings under a microscope it will show you the growing seasons like a tree pretty neat
