also the fact that "dark romance" has just reduced to being smut instead of a romance that explores dark topics and when it does talk about these elements, it tends to romanticise it as opposed to acknowledging it as something unacceptable and toxic. and then of course there's the debate that "everyone knows this is fiction, don't take it seriously" but we all know that unconsciously it does have an effect on the readers, especially if they're young and impressionable!
