- In this tutorial you will learn How to transfer files between Ipad / Iphone and A computer / Laptop running Windows 10 Operating System without using any software like iTunes etc.
Both Windows 10 and Ipad / Iphone with ipad os 13 have a feature called as SMB ( Server Message Block ) which supports file transfer in the same network.
Every year or so, I make another attempt to set up file transfer between my iOS devices and my Windows 10 laptop. No matter how many different explanations or RUclips videos I follow, no one explains it clearly enough for me to succeed. And I am a retired computer consultant!
But, FINALLY, I succeeded, thanks to this clear, no BS tutorial that explained ALL the steps required.

Also would like to ask: whether I can use ipad in the bedroom, control/operate entire PC which the machine is sitting in lounge? Could you please make a vedio for this task? Before bedtime, I always like to sit in the bed, do 30 min ipad work, but with pity can NOT access whole PC to do other type of work. I often have to use AUTOCAD, ARCHICAD software, but there are no ipad apps for these software.

Thank you so much! Finally a solution without any cables, minutes of waiting for the iphone photos to show up in explorer, just wifi and 1 minute per gb. bought the iphone 14 pro to shoot raw, but struggled to get them onto my pc so far. Thanks again and keep up the awesome work!

@@MyHowToCodeSchool I stumbled over a problem though. If my PC goes to energy saving mode and I wake it up, then I have to restart the iPhone to be able to reconnect to the folder over smb. Any thoughts or tipps, how to avoid this? Maybe an advanced sharing setting?

shared folder will not take your ipad storage
you can remove the smb server conection in your ipad if you dont need it

Thank you for the guide! I'm still relatively new to the ipad and I was able to follow the video and get this set up. Now I have a way to transfer work files back and forth between my ipad and PC. Most importantly, I can now back up my Procreate files to my PC.

Thank you, You helped me a lot. If it doesn't work, you need to enable one other thing, that does't show in this video. So go to "Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Network and Sharing Center\Advanced sharing settings" on Private -> File and printer sharing tab enable "Turn on file and printer sharing" option, also network discovery should be enabled as well if it wasn't. By changing these setting helped me to connect. I am using windows 11. Hope it will help someone, who is encountering this issue as I did.

I can get it to work (thanks ). But for what I do in my shop I need to have the connection all the time . The next day it will not connect as my lease on ip address has grabbed another from the pool , so I have to update it daily Is there a better work around …or would I have to reserve a ip from dhcp. Or set a static ip for the computer and use that. Thanks

Thank you. This is great. It works for my iphone but for some reason I don’t have the three dots in the files app on my iPad to enable me to connect to server. Any idea why that would be? I also don’t have “my iPad” in the Locations tab on my iPad. Only iCloud and recently deleted. If you could help me with that I would really appreciate it!

hello. Very nice and clear tutorial. On my iphone when i try to connect to server I get a message that there is a problem connecting to server. Could you please help with this.

may be issue with windows.
i have seen this error before.
one possible solution is to turn off windows defender.
try this.
turn on wifi and disconnect it from internet. ( it will be a local network )
in windows search for windows defender and turn off / disable it for private network
connect pc and iphone to that network
try all the steps
after success or failure turn on windows defender
connect wifi to internet
Wow!!! Thank you so much!!! I'm using this to transfer folders n files from my laptop to my Ipad Pro M1 2021. This is so amazing. At first, I tried to use FILES app to enter the 'smb' address. But it doesn't work. Then, I tried the DOCUMENTS app. I just tap 'add connection' then choose 'Windows SMB' to enter the address. I can easily transfer multiple folders from my laptop to my ipad. Thanks again for your great tutorial!!! :-)

Thank you, I have been messing around for days now, with iTunes, i bought a USB cable too, and did a trial of a app and none of it worked. This allows me to watch my mp4 movies, leave them on another computer, not using up resources on my iPad. Only thing different i had to do was log into my pc domain/user

From other people's comments, it sounds like this is a good solution. I don't understand the first step, which is setting up a new network. Is there anywhere I can find an explanation for how to set up a new network, that's different from the network that I've already got set up?

thanks for such a crisp and clear information.. i Tried this and it worked great at start.. however now whenever I am adding user in advanced sharing it automatically gets deleted and everyone appears in its place.. can you please help me here
Thank you for this. The only problem I now have is that I can only access the internet through safari on my ipad or use mail on my ipad when my laptop is active. I can use youtube but can’t get emails or browse the internet without the laptop being active.

Do you know how to setup the ANDROID phone to share a resource/folder so that it can be seen from the IPAD? Question #2: which app you used as file manager/browser in your iPad??

This was a very good tutorial which I followed to the letter relating new user, ipad data file, file sharing, permissions, network, IP address, etc. but for the life of me I don't know how to open the ipad to begin using this. I have an old iPad2 for which all of my previously uploaded music (over 600 music files) was overwritten when a new version of iTunes was downloaded. All of the music is still on my old iPad 2. I have one music file presently in the iPad data file I created on my desktop. I just don't know what to do next. Did you open the iPad on a PC...and. if so, how do you do that? So close...but I didn't understand the end. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.
does the transfer speed depends on the Network speed or is this the same rate as cable transfer?

Just bought a new iPhone 13 Pro Max and nothing connects anymore. Tried sorts of different routes but still unable to connect.

Should we keep the wifi connected for both the devices always?

only when you need to transfer files, both devices needs to be connected to same device.

Thanks for sharing.....I followed your tutorial very smoothly until I came to connect to server. I did put in my IPv4 address, also name and p/w - connect to server. Unfortunately the server response was "The file couldn't be opened because the specified URL type isn't supported." My file transfer is between my Ipad Pro to my Windows 10 desktop computer. Any help will be appreciated.

One solution which worked for me was disabling windows defender
Make sure that your WiFi is not connected to Internet ( it will be a local network ) and try if you want to

I have transferred a folder containing PDFs and MP3s, but when i copy or move the folder or parts of it to "On My iPad" folder, they do not work if i am not connected to the WiFi. I am looking for a way through which i can transfer and take things with me. Any ideas? Thanks.

Could you please tell me if I can transfer data from an iPad to a regular External HDD hard drive that's used for windows laptop.
If so could you make a tutorial on that.
Or do we need to buy specific iPad compatible external SSDs? Because they are pretty expensive unlike the external HDD drives.
There are some pendrive with lightning connector from SanDisk if u want to try that out ( if u have lightning port // if u have usb type c port then type c pendrivess are also available

Very good explanation. I did exactly as instructed. But when I try to save files onto the shareable folder on the ipad (for retrieving on my windows laptop), the error message is "the operation could not be completed. permission denied", any advise how to handle this?

It’s so tricky and never transfers all the photos & videos without an error. Will it connect even you don’t have internet? I don’t have internet and it wouldn’t connect to the server even though I entered the IP address correctly

Some people have connection issue
One solution is to disable windows defender
If you disable windows defender then make sure that you are not connecting to the internet
After transferring files turn windows defender on and connect to internet
