I used to use nothing but metal hooks, then switched to Furls (metal tip) and used them for a long time. Then I discovered Prym and never dreamed I would love a plastic hook. I have NO problem crocheting with them at all with ANY type of yarn, but I don't crochet as tight as it appears you do. I'm not super "loose", but not really tight. But THEN I found the Yarnology ones at Hobby Lobby and bought the 5.5mm (because for some reason Prym does NOT make a 5.5mm) and I realized they are basically the same! I have been using Prym for about 3 years now and they don't slow me down a bit! My daughter told me about 2 months ago that she is pregnant with TRIPLETS (!!!), so over the past 5 weeks I have now crocheted 12 baby blankets using all kinds of different stitches.

I have both the Prym and Yarnology hooks and love them both. I use my Prym hooks more simply because that white shank allows me to see the stitch better, especially for the darker yarns. The 6 and 6.5 Yarnology hooks have a dark shank and you can’t see the stitches well because of that. The white of the Prym just works better!

I use my Prym hooks when a yarn is too slippery for my other acrylic, wood, or Furls Odyssey hooks. That little bit of grab actually helps me maintain tension.

I have recently bought some Yarnology hooks and they are so light and comfortable. It makes me wish I had tried them sooner. I haven't tried the Prym yet. I'm a Boye hook user so Yarnology is right up my alley. Thanks for showing off a comparable hook.

I love reviews. It helps me so much. As far as dog breeds go by saying"dangerous" is so ridiculous. It all depends on the owners. I have had pits before and they are so lovable if raised correctly. Thank you for your review!

Same. I was raised around rotties. My parents bred them for God's sake and never did any show signs of aggression.
Then they got a red nosed pit, bigger sweet heart you've ever met. BUT she did have a problem with anyone who appeared wearing a durag, even my father, who was arguably her best friend.

i use prym too all sizes, i didnt like it much from the start but once i started using more i realise two things, No.1, the more you use the hook, the more it slides easily through the yarn, No.2 , ii give it a good rub with a dry smooth napkin before i start my project and it works perfectly smooth

This was a great comparison Jennifer. I love my Yarnology hooks. Laughed at the price you pay. I live in Canada and there is one store in town that sells Yarnology hooks. They are sold individually and start at $12 CAD, and go up to $18 CAD. Yes, quite expensive in comparison to what you pay. Am greatful my sister would go state side to Hobby Lobby and she bought the set. She has since become a Clover gal and passed all her Yarnology hooks to me. YAY me! Thanks again Jennifer

When I first got back into crocheting, all I had was the boyd hooks, and I struggled. Then I bought a Prym hook, and the first thing I tried using it on was cotton. Bad choice. I use them on slippier yarns like velvet, and they are the Bomb!. Then I tried yarnology hooks and loved them too. My favorite hooks are the Clover hooks. I can use them on about any yarn and they seem to work the best overall. Thank you so much for all of your reviews, they really help!

I was the winner of both a small and large set of Prym hooks last year from the Marly Bird TOS. My immediate thought was that they reminded me of the wooden and resin Furls hooks. Prym hooks are a fine option but for me nothing can beat a Furls Odyssey. I’m hoping that one of my grandkids picks up the craft so that I can gift the underused Pryms. Great review Jennifer.

I just got sets of Prym hooks from Walmart, of all places, for really good prices. They have a set of E,G,7,H and J for $19.00 These are mm sizes 3.5,4.0,4.5,5.0 and 6.0. They have a second set of the larger hooks for 20.69. They include sizes 7mm, L,M,N and O, mm sizes 7.0, 8.0,9.0,10.0 and 12.0. My step daughter (who is 35 yrs old) wants to make herself a granny square cardigan and doesn't have the hooks I gave her when she was 12 years old and first learned to crochet. So it's going to be an early birthday present for her! I ordered them Sunday or Monday, and they are due to arrive today.

Hi Jennifer. I don't usually comment, but I agree 100% about the hook vs the yarn makes all the difference in the world. I bought a Prym hook (the exact one you're using, lol) to try when I ordered the Metallico yarn from Hobbii which is very slippery yarn. I loved the friction when I was making ribbing for gloves with Metallico but changed to my Clovers for the acrylic blend body of the glove.

Hooks can be expensive so it's nice to see some more affordable options. These would be great if you're a person who likes to keep your hook with your work and have several WIPs.

You've mentioned before that you have skin issues, but I think this is the first time I've heard you mention eczema. I have eczema too, so I was wondering what your favorite lotion/cream is for your eczema. Mine is Aveeno Eczema Therapy Moisturizing Cream. I always forget how well it works until I have a bad breakout when the weather changes drastically and my hands dry up and crack like the Sahara! The relief is almost instant and my hands begin healing overnight. And (as long as I use it regularly 🙃) it keeps my hands healthy. 😊

I feel exactly the same about the Prym's, especially in the smaller sizes with smaller sized yarn and slippery or splitty yarns. The larger Prym's don't have as much friction as the smaller ones. I think they stop being as "grabby" at or after the 6mm J hook, but they are still very much like the Yarnology hooks in those bigger sizes. If I had to pick one or the other to keep, it would probably be the Yarnology. I love that I don't have to store them "hook down" to be able to see the colors to know the sizes. The color for the Yarnology ones are up top with the hook, so you can always see what size you are grabbing without picking them up. It was the Prym hooks that made me realize that I like this shape of hook better than Boye, and now I love the Susan Bates, too, which I didn't when I first learned to crochet, so we definitely have that in common. Thanks for another great review, Jennifer. Hugs & blessings!

    • @vegangelist
      @vegangelist 2 года назад

that must be true. i have the Pryms, but only in 7mm and up and I LOVE them and they are not grabby at all. I have not used the yarnology but have only felt them on my hand and they don't feel as smooth as the Prym to my hand. For anything 6.5mm and below I am strictly a Tulip girl so I definitely am a snob for smoothness. I guess, for science, I should try a yarnology hook to truly compare it to the Pryms. Ha!

Great review Jen. I’ve Furls, Prym, Yarnology, Clover Amour plus all my other aluminum hooks and my least favorites are the Clovers. I’ve no issues whatsoever w/the Pryms. (maybe try rubbing them w/wax paper to remove any residue). I don’t think the Pryms like cotton. Btw, I got mine at Joann’s in 2020 for $15.00 for the small set n $17.00 for the larger ones, now you don’t want to. It them there. Try Amazon or Walmart for better prices.

Is the Yarnology Luxury hook an in-line or tapered hook?

I have two of the Yarnology crochet hooks but have not used them yet. I also have a set of Boye Ergonomic crochet hooks, Boye aluminum hooks, and Boye acrylic hooks. I also have some crochet hooks from Dollar Tree and Dollar General.

I'm on a fixed income , however I got a super great deal on my furls hooks, and I absolutely love them, I have arthritis and the furls allow me to crochet with a noticeable less pain, I loved my Susan Bates until the furls, and since I paid alot more for them I am very careful with them and how I store them when I'm not using them.

I have the smallest prym hook, 3.0mm, and the 2 sets they offer, I love them. I recently bought some yarnology hooks, 5.5mm, 6.0mm and 6.5mm. I haven't had a chance to use them yet though.

It looks like a large toothbrush, l am new to crochet, l have a pony type hook and although l have small hands it still feels short, and was having problem going threw the stitches with it, but l can only crochet using hook and wool in my right hand, but if this is longer may be better for me, as l hold hook like knife x

First of all: yes, yarntopia is ridiculously soft! it is nuts how soft it is.
I have felt the yarnology hooks but, honestly, to the touch they didn't feel NEARLY as smooth as the Prym hooks.
I am not normally a plastic hook lover. In fact, the only plastic hooks I will use are for size 7mm and up. Everything 6.5mm and below, I am strictly a Tulip Etimo girl. The smoothest metal EVER plus an ergonomic grip so I can hold the hook very lightly in my hand. The only hook that I can crochet ALL DAY with without pain in my hands.
I used to have Clover Amour hooks for my large size hooks. They are pretty good. But I HATE that flat thumb rest. My thumb cramps up so quickly with that because that isn't ergonomic, honestly.
I tried the streamlined Furls hooks when they came out and hated them, though they were beautiful.
When the streamlined swirls came out, I was reluctant but I gave them a try. I REALLY like them for many projects. I have them in size 7mm to 10mm. I wish they had a 12mm too. They are quite smooth. Not tulip etimo smooth, but still smooth. And they are comfy in the hand, even if they are a bit heavier than my norm. They are comfy but not as all day comfy as my Tulips. But, again, I use them when I need sizes that my Tulips don't come in. And the resin hooks are wonderful for what they are. In a perfect world, resin hooks wouldn't have to be babied so much, especially at their price point and with their new not so good replacement policy. But still, the swirls single-handedly helped me make friends again with Bernat Blanket yarn. I had utterly refused to use blanket yarn after HATING to work with it with my older plastic Boye hooks (wretched things!!) The swirls are like a DREAM with the blanket yarn. I would own the 10mm for blanket yarn alone. Truly. I also really like the swirls for roving yarns (such as the scarfie). And the deep cut in the hook (which i don't love for all stitches or yarns) is wonderful for slip stitches and herringbone stitches, among other things.
But the swirls have limitations. And, again, the swirls would NEVER EVER replace my tulip hooks. They are only ever going to be for my chunky projects.
But sometimes the swirls aren't good for a particular yarn or stitch. For those times, plastic hooks are my only option (since i can't stand working with wood hooks). Prior to the Pryms being available readily, I would use the clover amour hooks. But since I got the Pryms, those poor Clovers have been abandoned!! The Pryms are as good as plastic gets, as far as I am concerned. I love the handle SOOOO much more than the Clovers. And they are so light and smooth (for plastic). I feel extremely minimal drag with the Pryms and don't feel any texture to mine so I am wondering if yours is just slightly off. To be fair, I only have the large size set. I have ZERO need or intention to ever replace my Tulips with any Furls, Prym or any other hook. I have 5-6 sets of Tulips. I am fully committed and in love with them. LOL But the Pryms are a VERY happy and somewhat accidental discovery for my large hooks. I would say that the Pryms (which also do well with blanket yarn, though not as well as the Swirls) are now my "everyday" large hook and the Swirls are what I use for certain types of yarns and stitches. I am very glad to have both but I wouldn't be happy with only the Swirls and the Swirls are better at some things than the Pryms. I got my Pryms on Amazon in a set. They are great and the price, as a set, was excellent. I think about 22 for a set of 5. Can hardly beat that.
As you eluded, this review isn't really a true comparison since you aren't using the same yarn for both hooks. As for the scarfie (wool-blend) doing so well, I think that roving style yarns do fairly well on plastic hooks so maybe that is why is the difference.

I absolutely love Furl’s hooks. The Prym and Yarnology sre both great too. I believe that the Prym hooks would be great for beginners because of the texture on them. It’ll hold the yarn easier and teach tension a bit faster. The yarnology are a dream, especially the older ones with the decorative handles. I also really like the Prym knitting needles. They have the same texture and are triangular if I remember right. I’m a beginner knitter and cannot get over them. I just wish they came in smaller cable sizes, and the range of the needle size was broader.

I absolutely love my Clover Amour hooks. I tried Bamboo hooks and couldn’t stand them. Can’t afford the Furls.

In the past, I purchased several Furl’s hooks as well as their yarn. The metal hooks are heavy. I have arthritis in my hand snd the Furl’s Odyssey hook cuts down the time I can crochet. The acrylic hooks break off at the tip. I received an acrylic hook and the same day, the tip broke as I unpacked them. I notified Furl’s and the CSR accused me of “not storing it properly.” She refused to replace the hook despite me offering to send the broken hook back. They offered me a coupon to buy another hook. No thank you. Their yarn is beautiful and worth the money. Unfortunately, Furl’s lost a return customer. I’ll never buy from them again.
