Wrestling Bios Presents - The Story of Glacier in WCW
When Eric Bischoff created WCW Nitro and began turning the corner in regards to the success of World Championship Wrestling, one of his mantras was to create a more reality based television show in comparison to the WWF's Raw broadcasts. With the introduction of The Outsiders in WCW, this mantra came to fruition. However, there seems to be exceptions to every rule when it comes to Eric Bischoff, because he also decided to create The Glacier character, a character he thought would be big money.
The WCW debut of Glacier was but on hold as the nWo storyline took over WCW programming in mid 1996. This didn't stop WCW constantly airing vignettes and hype videos regarding the debut of this Sub Zero inspired character. In maybe a case of too much hype, Glacier eventually made his debut on TV screens and the similarities to another huge selling franchise at the time were really hard to miss. Soon after his debut, Glacier would begin feuding with Mortis and Wrath in a storyline dubbed "Blood Runs Cold", and in a reality based WCW, things didn't go quite the way Eric Bischoff envisioned.
This mini documentary from Wrestling Bios takes a look at The Glacier character in WCW. Topics covered include:
00:30 - Eric Bischoff wanting to create a more realistic wrestling show
01:49 - Raymond Llyod, the man who portrayed Glacier in WCW
04:30 - The "Blood Runs Cold" Glacier debut vignettes
06:31 - Sub Zero in WCW
07:07 - The Glacier WCW Entrance
09:00 - The making of Glacier's ring gear and entrance effects
11:03 - Wrath and Mortis
13:28 - WCW gives up on the "Blood Runs Cold" Storyline
14:44 - Glacier turns heel
16:45 - The return of Glacier
- Much More!

What a promising career. So sad he had to travel to Outworld and protect Earthrealm and his clan
we all have to do our part for earth
😅😅😅😅
FINISH HIM!
😂😂😂
13 year old me accepted Glacier as a member of the Lin Kuei clan.
32 year old me still thinks he might be
& at that time, 24 year old me would've accepted him as well!
😄LMBO, ntm I was heavy into the MK VIDEOGAMES during the 1990's. Seeing Glacier for the 1st time I was screaming "SUB-ZERO WINS" after his matches. Lol
Arcade Dude lmfaoooo
Lin Kuei don't remove their mask.
But in mkx sub zero is maskless
Glacier's problem was he was just a bit late. If he'd debuted in 1995, smack bang in the middle of all the dungeon of doom silliness, he'd have fitted right in.
He could’ve been “The Yet-ay”
Yep. 1995 needed Glacier, not 96.
@@JM1993951 i would've paid good ppv money as a 7 year old to watch glacier take down the yet-ay lol
@@rollo-koster5338 the fact he's still remembered and talked about to this day shows that the character still made an impact despite the era displacement

yeah. prick beat me to the punch! 🤣
Hell yeah! I don't care what anyone says - as a teenager in the 90's this was cool AF!
Waterborne Camper the lasers and the snow effect. Wrestling in blue lights not the red light like Kane and the Fiend. Was awesome
Hey,I'm glad someone said it because honestly I thought it was great too
Waterborne Camper Agreed. Sting and Macho were my guys ,but I was always entertained by this dude. Totally cool to me and my crew.
I agree. I remember his debut and thought this guy is cool as hell.
Waterborne Camper I thought it was stupid and wanted the nWo to kill him.
Glacier was my physical ed teacher in high school at lassiter Cody Runnels (Cody Rhodes) was in the same class as well, I also wrestling teammates with him in middle school. Glacier was a big goof ball and really nice guy.
billy lomax I went to LHS too. Used to see Scott Steiner & Buff Bagwell in the halls going to see Coach Day. Always heard about Glacier there but that was after I graduated.
@@mikebuglione32 I know coach day. What year you graduate? Scott Steiner owns the shoneys in acworth off highway 92.
I was in his PE class in Simpson middle school in the late 80's
@@shawdawg3675 small worlds man I went mcClesky in the 1990's. And I grew up off of trickum Rd
I was working for cobb county on the Hvac crew and Glacier saw me and thought I was a wrestler (I was a big dude ) when I told him no he talked me into training for it. Long story short I got into the independent scene and had a few matches against him. Super super cool dude.
It’s ridiculous how many people DDP put on and helped get back
Gabe Marmolejo a good man shares what he has
Yeah. DDP is one of the rare great people in this world. Seems like a solid dude.
I used to think yoga was BS before i saw what DDP yoga did to like half of ex-wrestlers
love ddp. Seems to be a great man.
I loved this character when I was a kid. I loved the power rangers and of course mortal Kombat put that in a wrestling ring I was so excited. It's a real shame they didn't do more with that.
You and me both are fans of both MK and Power Rangers.
Missed opportunity never having Jushin Liger vs Glacier
Yea I loved him but...I don't know what more you could do with ray. He was pretty much typecast as a cartoon gimmick.
Ray Lloyd represents the Lin Kuei.
👊😂
The bio I never knew I needed. Nice!!
At least we got Mortis (kanyon) and Wrath (Bryan clark) out of the deal.
Shang T Sung and Sektor??
@@reginareece7081 I think Wrath was a rip-off of Shao Kahn.
Ya, the heel part of the Mortal Combat ripoff was actually pretty damn solid. Thought both were worthy of a push.
Mortis was that dude. But when they made him take the mask off, the character sucked
😆 😆 😆
He was a middle school teacher in the late 80's as well. I know this cause he was a teacher at my school.
Your school was the Lin Kuei!
My mom worked with him. Said he was a great dude.
He was a P.E. Teacher, so a Coach.
Fun fact: Ernest The Cat Miller went on to have a more remarkable run than Glacier "Somebody call my momma Imma about ta whoop somebody" lol
@Nich Hodge hes an actor.
Perfect theme in the intro...he definitely was sub zero
You managed to make a 20 minutes video about Glacier in WCW, you are a legend mate. 💯 Respect
If they left his mask on it would have been better.less intimidating without it.
Exactly
I agree they should of let him keep the mask on
This character was cool per say 😁.
hbk1469 I remember in 1999 he sold his gear in backstage segment
Except for the fact that MK3 was the game that was out at the time and they were going with the "newest" version at that time.
I remembered they hyped him up so much
And it was so weak right lol.
@@debravalreyes2033 "you're world is about to change.... Blood will run cold!" In July LOL 😆

Good video!!! But ummm..... I'm still waiting on Norman Smiley!!! Come on brother!!!!!! Norman Smiley lasted longer than Glacier!!!!! The big wiggle dance is legendary!!!! He trains wrestlers now!

Mortis = Reptile
Wrath = Shang Tsung and Shao Khan
david otunga = the ratings bonanza
@@sappyfoot bet you waited months for that
Ernest Miller=Liu Kang and Raiden?
YOU A LEGEND FOR THIS ONE
I don't get it, we know it's a show... I LOVED Glacier lol I never liked them turning him heel and jobbing to everyone on Worldwide
I know it sucked they did that
Yes Glacier was Great!!! He would have been an Excellent Intercontinental Champion in WWF. Its just that WCW was run by people like Hogan, Nash, etc, etc, and they would not give a Character like him any shine.
Mic Carter I didn’t know he went heel. I watched Glacier as much as I could when I was young.
@@dusthue Ya, I didn't have cable growing up so I mainly watched Worldwide. After he lost a couple of times on Nitro, they started jobbing him out to Ernest Miller, Jerry Flynn, etc. He would work heel and beg off while the announcers would "note a change in his attitude since his loses". I think they could have done more
FieryReign they could have reworked his entrance, honestly it should have just been like that the first time and maybe on a rare special occasion. Otherwise have a much more normal but still theatrical and cool entrance that doesn’t bleed money. He could work and had a good look, even if it was inspired by a video game, you could have made him a teen and young adult favorite by giving him a hard edge but keeping him face, kind of anti-hero like. There was SO much more to be done with him.
I watched this only because your childs first word was Glacier. My childs first sentence was Winter is Coming.
_"WCW's creative team had no idea where the storyline should go, and just like that, it was gone."_
Fast forward to AEW's women's division.
Loved the Glacier storyline. Sad there wasn't a follow through, I think it would have been a good change of pace from the NWO stuff.
Agreed! The NWO was great but I knew eventually people would get tired of Bischoff cramming HALL, NASH, HOGAN & the rest of the boys down our throats for 2 to 3 hours.
Glacier (& the Cruiserweight class) was a refreshing change from the predominantly NWO format.
Dre Murf 313 at that stage WCW had a deep deep pool of solid midcard talent. Minus the cruiser weight division and the NWO upper card the US title scene was strong. Raven Glacier, Mortis, wrath, Saturn, Jericho, Benoit, Gurrero, Malenko, Konan, Bagwell etc etc. That’s a solid mid card talent pool that deserved major pushes.
@@Bossman525 the only two names you wrote i think deserved more are Jericho and Raven. The other for one thing (like Guerrero's phisique, much more lean compared to 04) or others (charisma) couldn't take the next step. And remember. You talk about a company that created one of their greatest wrestler, and didn't know how to continue.
@@ds4life886 Benoit and Eddie could have been pushed to a higher level had they been booked properly.
WCW definitely missed a trick in taking the Raven character up a notch or two. I still remember the triple threat matches he had with DDP and Benoit.
Man for man WCW of that era had a far superior roster to WWF. Stacked with future superstars that were never booked or pushed correctly. Or maybe “Mr Bookerman” Kevin Sullivan had agendas against some of that mid card talent?
Glacier would have never worked fully at the time. It was the golden era of the anti-hero and he was just too cartoonish.
Glacier was an awesome character!!! I was a huge Glacier fan!! I was pissed when they started using him as a jobber. I was 16 and in Martial Arts myself. Glacier could have been an amazing talent if WCW would have just used him correctly.
I'm watching a near 20 minute documentary on Glacier.
This isn't my proudest moment.
You and I both
Childhood favorite of mine. I made sooooo many CAWs of him over the years.
I remember the buildup for Glacier. Seemed like it took forever for him to debut.
It did....almost a year or something
And he only had like 3 matches...
Literally THREE matches
It was a dumb idea
Lmao do u remember the promos for it? Super short mortal kombat rip off vignettes haha. I don’t know why they ever thought this would be cool. It’s barely a couple steps above the shock master lmfaoooo
@@iCycle086 I do, they were funny as hell. "Blood runs cold!!!" LMFAO!!!!
This vid was an unexpected surprise. Thanks for doing this one! Loved Glacier's kick in the N64 game...it was one of the better KO moves in that game.
Long hold "B"
if RVD had played Glacier as was rumoured to be the plan, it'd have ended up one of the most popular wcw gimmicks of all time.
There was no truth to that rumor.
or booker t
A Great Muta bio would be dope
As a kid at the time, tjhe Glacier entrance was mind blowing. I didn't really notice it at the time but it was actually a great ove to keep him away from the NWO.
I always thought glacier was cool when I was a kid. But I never considered him more than a mid carder. The nWo and eventually Goldberg were all the top stories in WCW and there was no room for glacier. And when he went up against anyone credible he got smoked. If they booked him right I really think the character could have done well. Have him come right in and start taking out nWo members. But we all know the egos in the nWo weren't going to let that happen.
Glacier bombed
The Brood had a damn cool entrance, and I guarantee you it didn't cost WWF $400k or an additional $35k for Gangrel's puffy shirt and goblet of blood!
Their musical theme was mad 🔥 too!!!
in all reality, the sub zero gimmick was a great idea. it was super cool, and i mean look at what the crow gimmick did for stinger
Apparently Kanyon was supposed to wear yellow but Midway sent them a cease and desist.
What if he did tan or orange?
I was a huge sub-zero fan so I thought this character was awesome.
Can you do Ernest “the Cat” Miller
Heck yeah and Norman smiley
Sure why not
Only if we call his momma
Norman Smiley was my favourite during his peak wiggle days
People keep bringing this guy up in shoot interviews, I want to know more
I liked Glacier. Felt he was underutilized like a lot of WCW talent. If they played their cards right, Sting, Luger, Flair, DDP, Booker, The Giant, the Steiners, Jericho, Benoit, Rey Mysterio, and Glacier could have been the WCW representatives to dismantle the nWo for good in 1998.
I love Glacier. Was really happy to have see him back briefly in the Aew Casino Battle Royal.
Wasn't the character part of hyping the Mortal Kombat show that was on TNT after Nitro? I think Wrath even appeared on the show.
Yup, he was a background guy in one of the last episodes
The show was called
Mortal Kombat: Conquest
And the actress Kristanna Loken from Terminator 3 was in it.
Mckxm beat me to it, I always got confused with Siro as I thought he was meant to be sub zero😂
Come to think of it, I think Meng appeared on the show too.
The entire series used to be on RUclips, it was pretty decent, but it ended on a cliffhanger which is super frustrating lol.
Mortal Kombat Conquest, also had episodes with Meng, Wrath and Goldberg made an appearance. Spolier the show only lasted one season with the final episode being Shao Khan kills everyone and ends no conclusion even to this day.
Glacier should have beaten Undertaker’s streak.
the ammount of sense that makes is just. astonishing
(obvious sarcasm)
Glacier should have done a lot of things. Put an end to the NWO, unify the WCW and WWF championships, win world war 3 and the royal rumble as the number 1 entrant, there was no end to the possibilities!
@@Benjatron-jw2rg 👀
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I know the man Ray Lloyd who is known as Glacier and he is hands down the most humble nicest guy I have ever met, and proud to call him a friend.
I laughed very hard at this video because it was a flashback and a half and just how ridiculous it is seeing this as an adult (great job with the MK music lol). But seriously. A guy who cosplays as sub-zero, with a name more Killer Instinct than Mortal Kombat, and with poses from WMAC Masters. Can't get any more 90s than this.
Yo on some real deal sheit, wrestling bios has the best wrestling content, *HANDS DOWN* THANKYOU VERY MUCH MR BIOS
I'm still waiting for the Glacier cinematic universe
If he had debuted a couple years earlier or in the 2000s, he would have been a perfect addition to WCW/WWE. He was good in the ring and would have been a great mid-top level guy who could do lots of mid card matches, whilst also being capable of going into top card matches here and there like a lot of guys did.
Good in the ring?? No he wasn’t. He was slow and clunky with his moves. His matches were boring and there was no way his character could have success in the NWO dominated story line. Everything revolves around that story then there was whatever glacier. It was like he was on an island working with the two or three other like characters I didn’t care about. He came one a couple years late
Dude he was on a wrestling game on Nintendo 64. I forget the name
Glacier was one of my favourite midcarders back in the day
I live in Valdosta. I remember seeing Glacier on WCW, but I didn’t know til around 2008 that he had gone to college here.
I ended up working at my local sheriff’s office with his tag team partner from back when they were in the independent circuit. Their team name was “The Blazers” which comes from the name of the Valdosta State University sports program.
I wish scorpion would’ve showed up, and said”Get over here!”
Love watching these videos on my lunch break
Honestly, RVD could've made this character work.
Rob could've got this over!
In WCW at that time? I doubt it. Glacier didn't not work because if the performer, it was just the wrong place and the wrong time.
Right. A stoic rvd.
Doubt that..
Your Channel brings the best memories back. Thank you!
Another BRILLIANT bio 👍😎👍
Glacier was legitimately my favorite WCW wrestler as a kid. I was born in 90 so ya they knew what they were doing. They got the young boy crowd huge by making a wrestler into sub zero.

@@Simpy1621 personality is but I assume Cage would have a moveset similar to John Morrison and/or Rob Van Dam.
Back then, Johnny Cage was somewhat of a comedy character, the ninjas were the face of the game and really what most people alligned the game with.

You never pull punches if something sucked and I REALLY appreciate this about you. I had to come back to visit this video for Glacier Month. I can't want for the next one.
That's the sort of outfit that you could get for 35 grand?

I liked using glacier on the Nintendo 64 game WCW VS NWO I think was called that, because of his karate style he had lot of cool kicks and punches and you could cheese it up! I loved that game,
Could you do a video on the first brand spilt in 2002
Loved to steal his special in world tour and Revenge. Great video
Just imagine if they had done with Lloyd what the WWE did with Blackman and Shamrock, just bringing martial arts ass kicking to everything. Although, I did like the whole Glacier/Mortis/Wrath trio. Adding James Vandenberg in was also a great stroke of genius.
My man with the consistently good videos.
I liked glacier
I used to call Glacier's finisher the Kronic kick😁
WCW booking was an absolute clusterfuck. EVERY match ended in a schmoz, so nothing ever meant anything.
Ray was a good wrestler. I saw him when he was working in Dusty Rhode's Turnbuckle Wrestling and he did good work.
Glacier could've been WCW's Undertaker 🤦🏾♂️

Cool video bro
That intro man 😎😎😎 quality stuff
Came back to celebrate Glacier month.
With his karate skills.
He truly bridge the gap between wrestling and UFC.
The one thing that ruined the glacier character for me was him taking off his mask. He should have kept it on, even if it was a half mask
Met Ray Lloyd many years ago during an acting course I was taking. He was a really nice guy and super down to earth.
Guy’s debut is right when Hogan turns heel and NWO starts. Lol
I remember that! It felt like he was a leftover from another era. The whole NWO thing took over. Cartoon characters like Glacier became outdated quickly...
How did I forget about my dude Glacier!
Imagine this in the attitude era of wwe 😂😂😂😂
Yea picture stone cold hitting a stunner on glacier everytime he saw him. LoL
B.K. Rhoda well that era was all gimmicks and stuff 😂😂😂
I miss the "gimmicks" I miss being young also. HaHa 36 and counting. :-) Wrestling rules. Did you watch the Royal Rumble last night? Thought it was pretty good.
B.K. Rhoda I did and apart from the Corbin vs Reigns piss break match and Charlotte winning I think it was a good show
Yea I agree. Charlotte could still have a nice mania match without having to win the rumble. My favorite part was Edge coming back then tossing Orton out.
Eric Bischoff recently said it best:
"In 1993-1995 Glacier would've worked out better in that era."
Have you done a video on The Great Muta?
WCW should have made a whole separate, maybe monthly show with these „fantasy storylines“. It would’ve been unique - and could have actually worked
Wow they really dogged that character I used to like Glacier he was badass
I do remember hearing a little bit about The Glacier. This was during a time where not only WWE but WCW were depending on cartoon characters to enhance their brand. I'm glad that it was ultimately taken away...
😂😂😂😂😂😂
Who else is back for glacier month?
I feel so dumb, all this time I thought Glacier was an official collab with Mortal Kombat to promote the game. How the hell did they not get sued for this?
Idk why I laugh wen I heard the mortal Kombat theme lol
The snow is being used by Sting now. It’s awesome just like this .
Where did you get those sick ass remixes of the character select music from mk2 and 3
