  • A full journey compilation on the 12261 Mumbai Howrah Duronto Express, a revolutionary train which reduced the rail travel time between Kolkata and Mumbai to 26 hours, beating the existing fastest rail connection in this route, the legendary Gitanjali Express, by a whopping six hours. The Mumbai Howrah Duronto, a seventeen coach fully air-conditioned rake, operated from its very onset with posh LHB coaches, covers the 1,968 kilometres between the western and eastern coasts of India at an average speed of 75 kmph, with a maximum permissible speed of 110 kmph and six technical halts at Kasara (Maharashtra), Igatpuri (Maharashtra), Nagpur (Maharashtra), Bilaspur (Chhatisgarh) and Tatanagar.
This compilation features the first part of a full journey from Mumbai to Howrah on the Duronto. Heavy monsoon rains had delayed the incoming train, leading to a 20 minute delay in the departure of the Howrah bound Duronto. In Mumbai's packed suburban schedule, this translates to an immediately loss of a travel slot, leading to very sluggish progress till Kalyan, past overflowing suburban station. Post Kalyan, the Kalyan WCAM3 in charge of the Duronto gathers speed as we head towards the Western Ghats through the rugged terrain forming a buffer between the Konkan plains and the ghats.
We arrive at Kasara for our banker attachment as dusk unfolds, and a triple-WAG7 attached (for braker purposes) Geetanjali Exprees comes rolling down the ghats. Ascending up to Igatpuri about 20 minutes later, the WCAM3 gives way to a crisp Itarsi WAP4, and almost immediately, we are racing through the Deccan, storming through large stations such as Nasik and Manmad.
Early next morning we are at Nagpur and the Duronto progresses eastwards in its merry fashion. After a breezy morning run, we skip the station of Gondia and enter the reserved forest between Gondia and Dongargarh at a reduced pace, negotiating sharp curves on either side. Having entered into Chhattisgarh, we undertake possibly our biggest skip of the trip, skipping Durg, and proceed past the massive steel plant of Bhilai. We take the bypass across Raipur, and rejoin the mainline towards Bilaspur. After crossing the Shivnath river after Bhatapara, we reach Bilaspur at about half past nine in the morning, having covered a distance of over 1,200 kilometres in around 16 hours.
On the way, we have some notable crossings such as the Pushpak Express, the Raigarh Gondia Jan Shatabdi Express, the legendary Mumbai Mail, the Bhilai WAM4 hauled Ambikapur Durg Express, the Pune Indore Express, and the Ernakulam Mumbai Duronto Express.

Excellent Video! Yesterday I Have Seen the Legendary king at Nagpur yesterday at 04:18 am! It was Very Exciting to see! But only the Thing was the Iconic Duronto Livery has fully abolished and got replaced with the Normal Rajdhani Coaches. Only one or 2 coaches were in Duronto Livery. However I Have Seen this train after nearly 6 years. One day, when we were going to Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh AC Express, We Saw Duronto running 1 hour late and departing from Nagpur in front of me in Platform 3. Finally, Our train was 1 hour late. It Came at 01:25 am! We Finally Boarded inside our train and reached Visakhapatnam Jn at 17:35 pm (05:35) pm 15 mins before time!

I remember back in the 70s when the Gitanjali Express was first introduced , it used to have stops only at Kasara , Igatpuri , Bhusaval , Nagpur , Durg , Rourkela, and Tatanager . Hauled by WCM4 / WAM4 / WDM 2 and also with with a top speed of 110 kmph, I think it might have given a tough fight to today's Duronto , and was definitely much faster than today''s Gitanjali .. It would be fantastic if someone had a timetable dating back to 1977 in order to compare .. Stops at Akola and Raipur were added a couple of years later and today's Gitanjali has as many stops as the Calcutta Mail of those days.

Bro, one thing I am always curious about is how can you tell the train name and engine model for a fast moving train. Do you watch the recorded videos in slow mo to find it out? And how to know the speed of your train?

Yet another masterpiece from you. Kudos to you.
However it is sad that this high profile train is only limited to 110 kmph speed. Imagine if this train travels at 130 kmph or at 140 kmph how much more time will it save. Dunno why this entire section has a 110 kmph speed limit.
Also if you can answer a query of mine. Why is this train linked with WCAM3 or with WAP-4 and not with WAP-7?

This video made my day. I am glad that you included all the three bhilai stations. And that route from nagpur to bhilai is quite close to me. Spent my whole childhood travelling at this region. Since my father is a railway employee, I am very attached to this one. Have travelled many times on this train but only upto nagpur due to less stoppage. All in all its a nice video. :)

it is a great video Ritadhi Sir. Fantastic to see that despite the ghat section up to Igatpuri, you reached Badnera (a full 663 kms. from Mumbai) in less than 9 hrs. I think your train started 20 mts. late at 5.35 pm and reached Badnera at 2.28 i.e. in about 8.53 hrs. If you leave out its slow run between Mumbai-Igatpuri, I suppose between Igatpuri-Badnera it must have averaged not less than 85-90 kmph...

Vishal Ch This being a duronto doesn't stop at Raipur doesn't even have a technical halt, so makes sense to go through Raipur bypass. On a side note do you know that Delhi- Chennai duronto doesn't stop at Bhopal, not even for 2 minutes , just passes through the junction like a goods train!

Sparsh Bhondekar there's a bypass line. Major trains like durontos and rajdhanis and freight trains take the bypass line skipping Raipur jn and directly joins to the Bilaspur main line. Hence, reducing lots of time.
