Trivandrum Rajdhani Express High Speed Blast: Delhi-Surat Compilation

  • A compilation featuring the highlights of the first day on India's longest Rajdhani in terms of distance. The tri-weekly Trivandrum Rajdhani is a superb train to travel on. Leaving Nizamuddin at 11 in the morning, it races through the plains of Uttar Pradesh till Mathura, before swerving south-westwards into Rajasthan. Past the barren terrain of Bharatpur, Bayana and Gangapur, the Rajdhani crosses Sawai Madhopur, after which it travels for sometime past the hills forming the outer boundary of the Ranthambhor Tiger Reserve, curving sharply along this stretch. The first stop is at Kota, 458 kilometres away, covered in this instance in around 4 hours and 50 minutes at an average speed of over 95 kmph.
The Rajdhani continues its south-western sprint post Kota, racing through the forests and sharp elongated curves of the Dara Pass. Subsequently, it skips the major stations of Shamgarh and Nagda, crosses the Chambal river, and sedately crosses the station of Ratlam, having covered 731 kilometres in seven hours and 30 minutes at a whopping average speed of 96 kmph.
As evening descends, the Rajdhani is hit by a 100 kmph barrier and snakes through the Panch Pipla hill ranges. We enter the state of Gujarat after Dahod and post Godhra, are able to hit up to 120 kmph where the Mumbai Rajdhani crosses us with a Ghaziabad WAP5. At Vadodara, we change traction from electric to diesel and are subsequently powered by a Golden Rock WDP3A. As we head through coastal Gujarat, we undertake two major station skips of Bharuch and Surat at a steady pace, also crossing the Narmada river after Bharuch.

Yes, as I experienced in my 12218 and 12264 itself, Bharatpur-Bayana-Sri Mahabir ji-Hindaun City-Gangapur City-SWM are all hauled at massive speeds with, as I pointed out, even the station names not being deciphered, unless one is accustomed to this route (and by the way, Gangapur City is very famous for its steam loco shed, that used to haul the old 23/24 Mumbai Janata exp. even when trains like 19/20 Dehradun Express plus all other trains on the Delhi-BRC stretch were being hauled by diesels). The third train in which I experienced this high speed action between MTJ-Kota was in the 12963 Mewar Exp., by which I travelled to UDZ. I took back 19722 UDZ-JP SF spl. and hopped on to the elusive triweekly 19609 UDZ-HW and travelled by it between AII-DSJ.

I always loved travelling by trains till i moved overseas in 2006. Now i travel in my imagination by watching thesr videos...slipping into nostalgia...imagining myself lying on one of the sleeping berths and drifting to sleep by the rocking of the compartment....😊😊😊....One question used to intrigue me then ...and even now...all these trains with a huge number of compartments moving at such high speeds..manage to keep moving at high speeds even in those sections where there are lot of criss-crossing of railway tracks without getting derailed...I would love to know from anyone who can tell me this

Ritadhi, the railways need to create more facilities like at least a trip shed at Panvel, so that Kerala/Mangaluru bound trains can travel on AC traction for a longer distance, rather than shifting to diesel at BRC itself. any comments?

Hi Ritadhi, I feel that in the light of electrification being undertaken beyond PNVL on the Konkan Sector (PNVL-Roha-Kundapura-Mangaluru), railways should expressly create trip shed at PNVL to enable all trains between North and coastal Maharashtra/Karnataka and Kerala, to travel on AC traction up to PNVL, i.e. for the maximum distance. For example from CDG there is a train like 12218 Kerala SK on LHB, plus 12484 from ASR and 22660 from DDN, all of these can cover their first 1800 to 2000 kms. on AC traction, with the inflated distance of PNVL-MAQ/MAJN being only around 1140 kms. on diesel traction, as MAJN/MAQ-TVC-CAPE is an electrified stretch. any comments?

Ritadhi, you wrote the following: The first stop is at Kota, 458 kilometres away, covered in this instance in around 4 hours and 50 minutes at an average speed of over 95 kmph. I think that is incorrect. Both 12264 and 12432 which share route path between NZM-BSR, cover NZM-KTT in not 4.50 but 4.25 hrs. at much more than 95 kmph. If they run on time, then their average speed between NDLS-KTT comes to over 100 kmph, possibly around 102-103 kmph. This is quite possible because even while travelling once by a much delayed 12218 Kerala SK in SL, after being overtaken by the 12952 Rajdhani around Kosi Kalan or Palwal, the SK became a demon and its P5 was in full flow, and for the first time I noticed that in even a train with SL I was unable to read station names between MTJ-KTT. I had two more experiences, but in much faster trains, namely the 12264 in October, and in the 12951 King Rajdhani both in the BVI-BRC and KTT-TKD stretches. But probably the overall volume of traffic in the Mumbai-Mathura stretch is lesser than the NDLS-CNB-ALD-DDU stretches where trains like 12302 or 12259 by which I travelled are not given the priority they deserve, because of the enormous amount of freight traffic. The so-called 3rd lines in the Delhi-CNB-ALD stretch simply do not work, and once the Rajdhanis/Durontos are trailing the goods rakes, invariably they get delayed. But between MTJ-MMCT, faster trains are treated like kings by WCR and WR and they simply brooke no opposition. Broadly speaking, in this stretch, trains are more consistently speeding at 129-130 kmph for 90 to 120 mts. before slowing down. This is not so both in the Delhi-Bhopal-Nagpur-WL-BZA stretches, or indeed in the NDLS-CNB-DDU stretch. Strangely, my 2302 Rajdhani and 2259 Duronto on return did pretty well on the Kolkata-ASN-GAYA-DDU stretches. In fact, my Duronto was only around 10-12 mts. late during its Dep. from Kanpur, but the Etawah-GZB stretch proved its downfall. My 2302 was close to 30 mts. late at CNB, around 48 mts. late at ALD, but strove manfully to reach DDU 21 mts. late at 2.05 am, but couldn't manage much beyond that, just that it didn't lost more time, but couldn't make any. It reached HWH at 10.20 am. My 12259 Duronto left CNB at about 6.40/45 but beyond Etawah it was killed by reckless operations of letting in freights ahead of it, I think between Etawah-Aligarh, a stretch of 170 odd kms., we chased and overtook some 15-17 freights, so you can imagine the amount of acceleration and deceleration subjected to it, and naturally it only crossed CSB (Minto Bridge, just before NDLS) at 12.10 am, where I alighted from it.

Why hasn't a trip shed been built at Panvel or Vasai Road to cater to numerous superfast expresses taking the konkan route and coming from New Delhi , Jaipur , Chandigarh e.t.c, first taking this route on WR and then on to konkan route is beyond me?
