It may just be me, but I feel like Sykes wants Phil back more than anything. And if it came to being in Thin Lizzy or Whitesnake. He'd choose Phil. I think even after all these year he just misses his friend.
No question about it ! the fact that he has participated in many Lizzy related tours , since Phil passed . In 30 years hasn't toured with Coverdale . Even though i think he did the best work of his career with Whitesnake ! it's clear he always had a much stronger bond with Phil .
he has to fluff the fast part though. Only gary could play that part properly. the Irish jig part. I have seen gary do it once at the Phil Lynott memorial concert and he turns his back to the audience so maybe he couldn't do it either? I'm a guitarist and there is no way i could play that
Sykes is not in Gary's league, that's a terrible version of a classic song. Never liked the sound of Sykes guitar. The notes sound wonky and not crisp, so the duel guitar sound suffers
Agree...no one plays Black Rose like Gary Moore but John Sykes version is very good and he deserves a lot more credit than he gets when all the Lizzy guitarists are compared. Thunder and Lightning was a underated album and its a shame Phil was starting to deteriorate health wise and we didnt see and hear more of Sykes and Phil collaborating on new material.
If you look behind them you can see that John Sykes is using a JCM 800 style Marshall and Scott Gorham is using a Plexi 70's style Marshall. It's really cool you can really clearly hear the difference in tone between the two amplifiers and also strat and les paul.
@@maxsavagetheshredinator5840 The Strat just sounds thin and weak compared to Sykes' LP. It may be a bit to do with the FOH having Sykes' send more up in the mix - him being the one playing more of the intricate stuff that is beyond Gorham. Keep Thin Lizzie’s music alive guys. Stop the bullshit arguments about which guitarist is better , and enjoy the music. The Thin Lizzy music. Two years ago, I drove 450 miles one way to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, just to hear the Black Star Riders playing the best Thin Lizzy songs live. I’ve never seen Thin Lizzy in my life, so, seeing Scott Gorham and BSR, was still special to me.
Was fortunate enough to see both Gary and John play with Lizzy. Moore was just a god, but Sykes was still brilliant. Both incredibly enjoyable in their own ways, but you'll know where my preference marginally lies.
Thank you for this comment, stop comparing different guitarists and styles and just enjoy! All Lizzie's guitarists had different playing styles but they just made Lizzy a constantly changing band but we're always Lizzy coz of Phil, Scott and Brian keeping the thread. I honestly think some folks feel they need to criticize instead of enjoying the music that made thin Lizzy unique.
Wow John nailed Phil's vocal big time. Works amazing with Scot . Truly is the best tribute to phil . Almost deserving of the Name Thin Lizzie. They should carry on with John. Keep the name too.
