I've never heard anyone say "I really regret keeping this great guitar," conversely, I've heard people regret SELLING said guitar over and over. Smart choice.
I actually sold my '61 335 Reissue because at the time I felt like I wasn't worthy of such a great guitar. Now I strongly regret selling it as the prices have skyrocketed since then and it was the best guitar I've ever owned
Same thing here. I was always saying to myself "man I have to get a tele" then I realised that there's more point in buying a humbucker guitar. And what better choice than the best humbucker guitar ever. I have to say I love this thing to the point I've started thinking that I maybe not the fender guy I used to think
When the time comes for new pickups I VERY HIGHLY recommend a set of wolfetone Dr vintage PAF's. I've owned and played dozens of PAF style pickups, Duncan to bare knuckle, lollar to ox4, manlius to throbak...there's no shortage of fantastic pickups out there, but the Dr vintage set has yet to be knocked out out of my #1 guitar. They've got all the buzzwords you'd want, clear, articulate, dynamic, beautiful attack, and most importantly, that mid-range quack/honk that just nails the old school sound. I've been fortunate enough to play quite a few vintage Gibson's fitted with PAF's and while all old PAF's are different, there is a characteristic thread throughout and the wolfetones nail it. Wolfe is also a great guy to work with, customer service is second to none.
Mick, it's drop-dead gorgeous. On my screen it's always looked pale gold; so I was very surprised to hear it's a blonde. Yeah, and your playing ... brilliant ...
Mick. When I was a youngster in the late 70s. There was an ES-335 in the family coat closet. I snuck it out and played it. It was a very cool sunburst and I miss it. A few years later, I got my own Les Paul and off to Kramers and Fenders. One of these days in 2020, I want to have a Gibson ES-335 of my own. Such a great vlog and I am very pleased to see it.
Thank you Mick, my guitar friend. You’re an awesome awesome player and a great man. Today at rehearsal, I was pondering how great it is that you bring every so and so day, a video with amazing content that is very much appreciated by (semi-)pro players. It’s really incredible. All that wisdom. Being the source of knowledge. Think of it and enjoy it. You deserve it.
Thanks Tom. The best thing possible is that Dan and I are some form of inspiration for you to try something or find something that helps light the fire to play. There are many far more wise than us, but we share what we have willingly!
Oh man Mick... could listen to you and Dan play all day. Always have killer tones and the playing is better every show. Would love to purchase more of your TPS original music, should you guys been inspired to record and sell again. Anything to support you guys. Keep on Rocking!
I love this type of video mick! Your thought process on guitar guitar/gear rabbit-hole is inspiring and interesting. Hope to see more like this in the future including an update in the strat journey!
Mick, yourself and Dan put yourselves down too much. Some really stellar noodling going on here. Super musical too. You're passion for what you do is infectious, so much so that after a few years of watch TPS I've gone from GT-100 into a PA speaker to a bunch of analog pedals into the front of a tube amp. It's a heavier setup, less reliable, more stuff to carry, temperamental...and I love it, all because you guys reminded me it's all about how your sound makes you feel. Cheers
Hey Mick! I work at the Gibson Nashville factory and can confirm that all the ES style guitars that were previously built in Memphis, and are now built in Nashville, are still of the highest quality possible along every step of the process. Also you and Dan should come to Nashville soon. Maybe next summer NAMM.... 🤔
Alec, thanks for the message! I was blown away by Memphis - and the Custom Shop too to be fair- so it’s great to hear it’s happening in Nashville. Would be cool to visit some day for sure. Cheers, and thank you for your work.
Yo mick! Due to most of my “friends” abandoning me over my (correct at the time, and vindicated now) views on the C-19 hysteria, I havent been able to show off my brand new VOS custom shop 335 in vintage sunburst. So here I am, living vicariously through your video showing off yours! Cheers!
Is Memphis gone? My 335 is made there. Was always hoping to go see where it was born. I play it through an original magnatone and there are days where the tone is just so perfect at every tone/toggle position that I could just happily live in a single note indefinitely. I always hear people say the "If you're gonna have 4 guitars" thing concerning this guitar's place among the classics. I say START with the 335.
I sold all my Gibson’s because of the “authentic” video: Two Figured ES335s, a Les Paul Standard HP, a Hummingbird, and a Songwriter. Still have an R9 I’m on the fence about. All lefties. Vastly prefer the Collings I bought as replacements. The R9 is hard to let go, but I too felt (and still feel)very alienated by the video.
This is really fascinating. I know it wasn’t just me that felt that way but it’s still shocking when you hear somebody else actually say it. Wow. Right with you on Collings of course. But my heart loves Gibson too, even if the corporate side has been bonkers at times. I also feel for corporations who have to juggle this crap. :0)
Mick, as much as Blue is your guitar, the 335 is equally so. You sound at home on this guitar, comfortable, but not in the normal Strat-y/SRV kind of way. This brings out another side of you, not entirely dissimilar, but just different enough to make this guitar equally a part of you. I’m glad you didn’t sell it. Also, I couldn’t stop laughing at your listing the guitars at the end! Absolutely perfect execution there, especially with editing it in through the playing.
Beautiful guitar presented by a beautiful person. Always amazes me that couple a sheets and chunks of wood plus bits of metal can do rock n rolll. Grtz
Mick, I think you are such a fantastic player and what I appreciate (of many things but maybe most) is your organization and dedication to covering the important issues that help the lesser knowing of us to learn the takeaways of the show. You and Dan have a magical thing. Tx!
It's a lovely guitar, and of all the ones you guys use on the show I think it's the one I'd like to own the most, closely followed by the DGT. It's funny how outside influences can make you feel differently about an instrument despite the fact that the instrument itself hasn't changed at all, I'm glad you kept it.
Great video Mick. I love the insight as to what drives you to pick a particular guitar. I also love how honest you were about having to pass on a guitar due to the money not being there at the time. I feel this is something that all guitarists deal with at some point. Also the jam at the end was excellent. This channel always makes me want to play, and also play better than I did yesterday.... Thanks for the video.
Mick, very helpful piece on the 335-I’m mulling over whether to own one-I use/record/gig with all my guitars, so they need to be flexible and inspire. I really needed to cut through the lore and hype and hear someone on YT harness the sound of the 335 (most have been muddy messes). You really dialed it in in a lovely, articulate way that spoke to me, as my current fixation is roots rock and Blues (but across the spectrum of each-jazz, country, rockabilly, experimental, old school flavors). Cheers, Mark in Canada.
Thanks Mark! I’ve actually just changed out the pickups on this guitar and there’s a vlog upcoming - might give you food for thought. They can be super articulate guitars. Good luck!
Steve Marriott used to play a Blonde 335 in his latter years with” Packet of Three “ to great effect so you’re in good company Mick 58 my birth year must get me one too 🎸🎸🎸 Great guitar face too Mick 😁
Ha! Not sure where the faces are coming from today. I don’t normally do too many. I think I had to get this recorded fast and I had time for two takes on the track run through so I think I’m just trying to get in the zone. Ish. Ha!
Gotta say towards the end of the Memphis factory’s life, they were putting out amazing guitars. The reissues were superb and excellent with no QC issues. I own a 63 reissue 335 Memphis and it’s up to par with my 95 custom shop 355. Idk how I feel about the ES models move to the USA factory now.
I selected and bought one. NOTHING needs changing. Blonde Because blondes have more fun. Clubby neck. It may be my imagination, a bit snappier brighter than burst. Great guitar, the MHS pickups are the best I've heard from Gibson. Besides changing pickups on a 335 is a hassle if you do it properly. Let it be, you won't regret it.
Nice! Mine is definitely a little dark sounding compared with a lot of the old ones I’ve played. I’ll change the pups for something a little bit lighter at some point, but nonetheless I love this guitar!
Have to say, I always appreciate when Mick puts down Blue and says “let’s try some humbuckers.” Like you said, the 335 is a perfect foil for Blue and each instrument brings out different aspects of your playing. Beautiful guitar, love the big Micky Mouse ears those earlier 335s had.
Complete 'down the lens' honesty, again, Mick. This proves that corporate decisions can effect people in so many unseen ways. Still think you made the right choice, to keep it - it sounds pretty special in your hands!
Thanks Gordon. I figure we’re all friends, so may as well say what’s on the mind. I think Gibson are probably aware of the hearts and minds game. Be interesting to see if they can actually play it from the heart over the next year or five.
Was out at lunch today, and the place we ate was playing BB King and SRV tunes. I got to thinking noone can sound like these musicians, but the music they created would not have been the same if BB King played a Strat and SRV played a ES-335. Its a symbiotic relationship, the instrument and is pallet of sounds shapes the player and the music they compose, but itself not creating it. Keep exploring with the 335, I bet it will take you surprising places.
Finally the video I was waiting for ! I remember Mick wanting an ES335 and I had seen this blonde one on the videos since last year but I could never know if it was his or he borrowed it from someone else. Well now I know! Also Mick, could you please upload the video of when you bought this beauty from Andertons?
What about you and Dan each making a video about your complete collection of guitars and a little cool fact attached to them ? Anyway cool video thanks for making it and actually listen to the people. it proves that you are truly interested in the people’s suggestions and shows the commitment you have to this channel. Nothing but respect !
Mic have you seen the new 335 they put out with mhs p90s they don’t don’t have binding on the neck either and are amazing I bought one and it was one of the last Memphis guitars made in the factory 335 + j-Drive in the two rock = unreal
Mick ace video. When u tweaked the sound into clean tone at 10:06 you made a Tsunami of powerful guitar magic that made the whole universe crave for that ES335 tones! Great musical spirit you have Mick. Live long and prosper.
loved the rambling walkthrough of the 4 guitars you need to own in life hahaha... I am on my way! Have a Tele, a Gretsch semi-hollow, a Martin DM, a Yamaha Classical, and a Strat coming in next Monday! Plus some ukulele's thrown in for good measure
This guitar might be your most inspiring guitar to me! Never thought I’d want a 335, but I think I’ll get as close as I can to that one some day. Killer guitar!
Thank you! If we forget the Tele for a nanosecond, I think the 335 is basically the ultimate guitar. The Tele is Ultimately The Ultimate Guitar of course. :0)
@@ThatPedalShow I'm always surprised at how truly unique the 335 is. It's very different from a midtown or anything solid/carved top. The 3-ply laminate might have been someone's idea to make a cheaper guitar, I'm not sure, but there's nothing else like it! It might be difficult to get a hold of a bunch of them, but maybe another show on hollow bodies/ semi hollow/ etc. The old shows on the collings hollow body with p90s vs 335 were helpful to me in choosing my current D'angelico DC (trying to get close to 335). Keep up the good work!
Nicely done, Mick. Can't get enough of my own Dot Reissue. Listening to your impeccable playing, it occured to me that Blues Saraceno would make for a killer TPS show! Great guitarist, gear nerd and pedal head !
Oh no! I really did not need to know that there are 335s out there without binding… That blonde is gorgeous without it! If I ever won a lottery I would be after a custom built 50’s spec Les Paul without binding, whether it would be a Gibson or not is a whole other question I don’t have to worry about for now ;-)
Ha, the ten guitars thing made me LOL. I just had to do this exercise with my spouse, as GAS hit quite hard this year. Being a heavy duty acoustic player I had a little variation from your list, which is great. One of the guitars that forced the list making this year was a 1970 ES-335 TDW in the walnut finish. Sounds and plays amazing, and I got a great deal on it. So I agree, long live the 335! Definitely a must have in the arsenal.
"If you're going to own 4 guitars..." *proceeds to list 17 guitars. Man after my own heart. Love ya, Mick!
Get out of my head, Mick!
Listed many of the guitars I own........lol
Honey, that's not your 5th guitar is it? .....Oh, you mean this thing? No baby ummm, errr, I just scraped the paint off one of those.....
I've never heard anyone say "I really regret keeping this great guitar," conversely, I've heard people regret SELLING said guitar over and over. Smart choice.

True, although I have heard people say they regret not being able to pay the rent.

How to make a shite Tuesday better. A new unexpected blog from Mick! Coffee time!!
Strat and a 335 are perfect foils. Gets me through every kind of music i want to play
I've made no secret that the 335 is my favorite of your stable of fine guitars. It's great that it has its own origin story video at last.
As a fellow strat player, I believe the 335 is the perfect counter guitar to a strat. Keep rockin!
Clapton proves you right. I'm not a big fan of him, but he uses both.
Me too. I’m a strat and 335 guy too.

Thank you Peter. It is kinda dark... the ones can be very brash yellow, but this one is warm looking for sure!
the playing part starts at 3:35 Was this done on purpose?
Ha! No, total fluke. Awesome.
Illuminati confirmed.
Maybe starting at 19:58 would have given us longer to ogle the guitar..

Mick, I agree, there's something about the look of the blonde 335. Also your playing style is very suited to the sound of this guitar. Nice video!
Blonde Thinlines always appealed to me because I liked the look of John Lennon’s Epiphone Casino after he sanded off the original finish.
My favourite of any TPS guitar. Love the way it looks, and I think Mick plays his best music on it. Laaaaaavly.

Beautiful, Sir. The blues at the end had some great nuggets in it.
Very happy you didn't sell your other guitars like you planned to. That one is just at home at TPS. It's already a classic.

Great vlog and great playing. Love the 'you only need x guitars' thoughts.
I've never seen one of those before, but that's GORGEOUS!
loved the rambling walkthrough of the 4 guitars you need to own in life hahaha... I am on my way! Have a Tele, a Gretsch semi-hollow, a Martin DM, a Yamaha Classical, and a Strat coming in next Monday! Plus some ukulele's thrown in for good measure
I really love the playing at the end of the video. The slight crunch is awesome!
Thanks Chaz! The slight crunch is the dear old Klon. Blessed thing it is!
My fav TPS guitar by miles, sounds awesome.
Sensational jam at the end!!!
You perfectly explained my feelings about the whole Gibson debacle. Thank you.
Gorgeous guitar, Mick.
Nicely done, Mick. Can't get enough of my own Dot Reissue. Listening to your impeccable playing, it occured to me that Blues Saraceno would make for a killer TPS show! Great guitarist, gear nerd and pedal head !
Gorgeous guitar!
That jam ripple fall sounds killerrrrrr
love you guys!
Love you Ryan!
Just bought one of those. From 2016. Might be the perfect es 335 for my taste. Also love the MHS pu´s. Great, great guitar!
Ah cool! Something about walnut too.... so classic!
I've always been a cherry red 335 fan, but that blonde is definitely something special.
Looks and sounds incredible!
