this track is timeless
💯
In the liner notes for the 46 Songs That Weren't Good Enough outtakes album, Mike says the song We Threw Gasoline On The Fire is virtual primer for The Decline, as in they were combining fragments of different songs they were working on into one. And if you haven't heard that track, drop whatever you're doing and listen to it immediately: it's an all timer! I won't say it's better than The Decline, but as a standard 2 min 30 second skatepunk track, it comes out pretty fucking epic
Great song.
It holds an emotional staple in my heart just because it was released in the same year I got into punk rock and the lyrics hit me because I was opening my eyes to the world and the system. Side note it's funny green day are considered to be the first to make a punk rock opera but Nofx was the first if you think about it.
That's what happens when normies talk about punk rock
I’m with you on this one. It wasnt love at first listen. It grew on me over the years. My house is thirty minutes from everything so sometimes I’ll hop on a motorcycle and ride out w this song.
I actually like the outro. I think it sums up the entire point of the song quite well...live in decline....nothing changes. Throughout, you have Melvin doing the Mel Yell lyrics which backs up the lyric "we know the truth but prefer lies...lies are simple, simple is bliss"... and again, nothing changes. It just keeps playing the same thing over and over.
I'm more optimistic than that. But I mean, we all like what we like. Although, I agree with what they're saying in the song, I just don't get down with it
Just saw them play in Fort Worth 2 weeks ago. Magical
I put that set up on my channel, i was there too!
I'm 42, I still love it, it is like the punk 2112 overture, I wasn't paying as much attention to NOFX at the time I was vibing more with AFI, Pennywise and Propaghandi at that point but this stood out.
Hey, I'm glad you like it! Enjoy whatever you want, however you want.
I couldn’t disagree more with what these guys are saying tbh.
Elaborate?
@@thepunkrockreview I think when you guys said they were pretentious and talked about what was punk rock and what wasn’t, or this is the most punk rock thing… it rubbed me the wrong way. These guys have lived and breathed it for 40+ years.
@@meccaollielord No comment from these noobs
Agree 100%! Love nofx and I can appreciate a band that after the first 20 years wanting to do something ambitious that pushes them and challenges them musically, but nofx by and large is their best when they are the South Park of punk... Absurdist, irreverent, quick and to the point. That said, I won't dump on em too much for wanting to nerd out and be self-indulgent. If they wanted to make a "magnum opus", then mission accomplished... Knock that one off the bucket list. But the audience is just thinking "man this is just musical masturbation. They are having more fun then we are." And to y'alls point... This is definitely not the joyride house party NOFX. This is more like being on psychedelics in an altered state of consciousness all by yourself in the Lincoln memorial in Washington DC and being like "woahhh"
Welcome to the darkside
Wow. You've listened to it four times and have an opinion
Four times on preparation for the show. I've Lauren's to it many times. But I mean, I could have heard it once and had an opinion on it. I don't understand people getting so angry about a different opinion, that's super wierd. But I mean, like what you like, enjoy it my dude, I don't care 👊😎🏴☠️
Jerry is the Nass player from the stooges
The Decline definitely is a sweet tune and definitely still holds up great in my opinion. The only thing i dont like is the fadeout but thats just something I generally dont like on songs 😮 fade ins are pretty neat though 😂
Lol, I knew I was gonna get hammered with this one...
Fat Mike was inspired by the Subhumans track. From the Cradle to the Grave.
Yeah, another song I don't personally care for. It just sounds like sounds like a Zeppelin song with a shitty singer... I mean, I like the vocals normally, just not on these long ass ballad type songs. I just dontncare about them when I lose interest in like 4 minutes. To each their own, tho, I'm glad they exist for the people that like them
In 2003 i was attending that show, they played life o riley and directly played the end of the decline from "and so we go on with our lives..." i can tell you it was awesome. How can you dislike this song.
I explained how in the video
Yeah and i can understand your point. What I really like about punk rock (among other things) is that songs are short. 2 min 2.5 min ,30 sec, whatever, they re short. That's what bothers me with metal, always 5 6 7 9 min, it lasts again and again and again, like a hit song in a green day show! Unfinishable... But once in a while you can make an exception. The Decline is the exception that confirms the rule as we say in French. And you got some fuckin great movies that last more than 1h30. Tarantino's movies i.e. once upon a time in Hollywood, the hateful eight, Pulp fiction...Scorcese too the godather ,good fellas, casino . Have not you ever listen to a song 15 or 20 times in a row cuz everytime it ends up ,you want more? Bad Religion made me feel that way so often but Bad Religion remained loyal to basic punk rock even if lyrics are all but basic. And melodies, harmonies...Fat mike gave me this with the Decline. But I understand you point and indeed ,you explained it and I well heard your reasons. I 'm not used to seeong a dude with a Nofx patch and cap, not liking the Decline. Hence my stupid comment... how can you... cheers to you and see you in da pit
Instantly lost me when you started talking about Green Day and being a NOFX fan since Pump Up The Valium
@lukepalmer7072 not really what I said, but ok. My favorite NOFX has been Ribbed since the late 90s
Bored with it? Not one song? You guys clearly don't understand the composition of the piece.
🤣🤣🤣
Well, there was the assumption that it was just a bunch of mashed up songs ate first so that says a lot. I respect people opinion and they have the right to dislike anything but to claim this song is not sonically brilliant say a lot about musical knowledge.
No it doesn't, just says we like and appreciate different things. I have no problem admitting the objective greatness of making something like this. I just don't like it. Doesn't mean I don't understand music, that's nonsense
@@viracocha03 liking or disliking it has nothing to do with being able to appreciate the compositional arrangement or depth of the design, it just reiterates my initial point.
@@venaseph6314 yeah, that's what I was trying to say, worded it poorly.
Yes.
Yo each their own 👊😎🏴☠️
The Decline is in my top 10 NOFX songs for sure (even though its basically an album). But personally, I lost interest in them after this release. The Codefendants stuff Mike is doing now is the first time I've been excited about his music in a long time.
Shit, I like post Decline NOFX the best outside of Ribbed
Do yourselves a favor and listen to Fat Mikes interview with Chris DeMakes Podcast about The Decline.
Just wondering, are either of you musicians ?
We talk about that podcast in this podcast. We're going to watch it and jump back in to The Decline next week or two.
Not sure about Rob, but yes, I'm a musician (or was) and put out an ep and recorded a full length. Not quite the discography of NOFX, but we were aight 🤣🤣🤣
Oh, I must have missed that part, I was doing some other shit while listening. Appreciate the reply.
It’s a fucking masterpiece… that’s it, that’s all there is to say. I can’t even make it through without bawling, it’s incredible. Just saw them play it live… again, just incredible
Also… music is like art, it doesn’t appeal to everyone, it’s not supposed to.. so if you don’t like it, that’s your opinion. My opinion is it’s the best thing they’ve ever done, “The Bag” is my next favorite song, you may not like that song either 🤷♂️. I think White Trash is their best album, you probably don’t so what.
Lol, I guess 🤷🏻
Super sensitive about a "masterpiece". If it were that good, you wouldn't care what anyone says about it. Also, WTTHAAB is a terrible album. It's ok to like bad music tho, someone has to... lol 🤦
@@thepunkrockreviewmy opinion is different, that’s ok. Regardless, your channel is interesting and you have a new subscriber.
This video was a waste of my time. I thought they were gonna play the song, and then comment on it. Not just 23 minutes of this dude bitching about the song.
Can't play the song, it gets copyright claimed. Not only that, but that would have been a waste of MY time (close to 23 min actually, lol), since I don't like that song. Given the choice of wasting your time vs mine, I'll waste yours every time.
Also, nowhere does it say we would play the song, that was mighty presumptuous of you.
The most over rated gimmick in skate punk. This album is a joke for those of us who were already punk fans. I assumed it was an album just with no gaps, and everyone hails it as an epic, I think you are silly, and it's pretentious as hell . I love the breakdown, and its very obvious that most people fell for the gimmick.fat mikes bohemian rhapsody os a cringe concept
Lol, dang, why am I catching strays?!? 😂😂😂 what exactly makes me dumb?
@@thepunkrockreview people that blindly consume this album as an epic, are silly. I'll retract that particular derogatory statement.
the decline is boring, i tune it out after the first couple minutes. all my friends keep telling me to give it a chance. I fkn have. its lame.also I'm a huge NOFX fan, why I'm a punk
This guy, this guy gets it.
