I think the Captor X will work for you. It's not like playing straight into a vintage cab but it's a really great-sounding option. This nice thing is being able to play through a bunch of valves and only model on the back end. You still get all of the tube feel from the amp you're using. There's going to be a learning curve no matter what so you'll have to get used to the idea of sorting that out but the Captor X is pretty intuitive. I just bought one for my mesa single rec. Yet to try it out. But, what I’m really getting from your video, is I can get an excellent clone of my usual rock tones through a 4x12 v30 Marshall cab. But, I can also get the amp to sound totally different with different boxes and microphones to expand the tonal opportunities from my amp that I can’t get unless I have a load of real boxes and mic’s that can make the amp sound like a different brand/amp, if you know what I mean Very excited.
Thanks for the introduction! This is the first video (out of maaaany) where the Torpedo X sounded not so "digital" :D (maybe mainly because of missing in-box post processing?)
Hi Shawn, could we get your thoughts on how the Captor X compares to the Suhr Reactive Load IR and which you prefer? Both companies have plenty of good reviews which can make the decision all the more challenging. Thanks!
Both the Captor X and the Suhr Reactive Load IR are exceptional. I would look at it more from the standpoint of your needs as opposed to which is better because they're both very comparable in quality. If you just intend on using great sounding IR's and don't need to tweak reverbs and eq for any reason, the Suhr might be a better choice. If you really need stereo XLR outs, the ability to go in and change mics on the fly or choose reverbs or add EQ? The Captor X is the better choice.
Wish this had MP3 clean through … for practicing .. so, you can run ur guitar and effects … by jam along with either a backing pedal (Trio) and/or MP3 or Bluetooth audio.
Now if they just become in stock somewhere in the US it would be nice. Not as bad as Spark with them taking $$ 5 months before delivering (sans all the youtubers). Will be picking up a Captor X at some point when it comes available. I’ve been tempted to order from Andertons as they’ve had them on and off.
Thanks for the demo. I've been thinking for days about buying the Ox, but now I'm hesitating. Which of the two would you recommend. (without thinking about the price). Thank you
Hi Shawn, GREAT playing as always! What would you recommend between the Captor x and the Suhr Rl IR mainly for the "feel" under the fingers, in terms of response and fidelity to the touch, as well as for the overall sound quality? I have no chance to try them both and I am very undecided... what interests me most is the sound quality and the touch response, without too many frills, but having a few more possibilities (as in the captor) intrigues me...
hey Mike, it's really hard to get to a smaller size and still be able to handle 100W. Have you touched a lit 100W bulb after some time? That's the kind of heat we need to get rid of. :)
Hi Shawn! As always, amazing demo! I might have missed it in the video, but I was interested to know if it's possible to use the reverb from the Captor X when the amp is connected to a speaker cab, and the Captor X is acting as an attenuator?
@@ShawnTubbs so, you’re saying that you can’t use all the “features” through your speaker cab? Is this only valuable for recording, or using it into your DAW? I want one of these to use with my high-watters, for attenuation, but was hoping these features translated to my cab too…? Thanks Shawn for all your help and hard work! ✌🏼
@@Stashmanfpv That is correct, the only feature you would hear through your cab is attenuation. If you are planning to use the Captor X mainly as an attenuator, it might not be the best option for you.
Good question. I don't think there is a reactive load box that has stereo SPEAKER inputs as of yet. I know the Two Notes Studio has stereo LINE inputs. I would think you would have to have two in order to run your rig.
I've not used the Captor X live but I think it would be ideal because it allows you to route different signals to FOH and monitors as well as the mic'd cab if you want.
Hey Bro, I'm new to these IR Boxes. With this one, can I use the attenuator AND the XLR's at the same time in a live situation? or is this one or the other? Another great vid!
Is it half as good as an OX box. it's half the price. I saw your 1st review of the OX and have had it in my cart a zillion times, just haven't pulled the trigger on $1200 this seems more doable. Thoughts?
The Captor X sounds exceptional and for the money, it's pretty hard to beat. I've been using my OX from the time I demoed it and I still prefer it for a couple of reasons. The OX has dedicated cab mics as well as a dedicated room model and mic selection. This allows me to choose two separate mics for the cab and still be able to choose a room mic and model. The onboard comp, EQ, reverb, and delay are really top shelf and overall, the OX just has more horsepower. I don't feel like the OX is twice the price better, but it is better. I don't at all think you'll be disappointed with the Captor X if you go that direction and the price is certainly more doable compared to the OX.
Was the Captor able to handle your 100 watt head no problem? No red flashing or anything else? I know it's rated for 100 but heads like the Superlead build I am in the middle of put out a lot more wattage.
@@ShawnTubbs I'm going to get a variac and take the voltage down. I think that might help tame the output. I heard it knocked off some volume from Ed's plexi.
Hi Shawn, awesome videos! They are really useful and fun to watch. I have bought the Captor X. But I am wondering if mine is not working properly or not. Have you noticed the latency? To me it sounded like I was playing through a virtual instrument with a clear noticeable latency. Everyone seems to be very happy with the Captor X. But it made my amp sound like a low end amp. What did you experience? Latency and quality of the sound? Thanks very much!
I didn't notice any issues of high latency. I believe the spec is 2.2ms from the Captor itself which is reasonable. Are you listening via headphones or a DAW?
Hey @Shawn Two Notes just released an update for the CABM which add a preamp section based on a Fender Silverface 1974 whatever that means! Lol, a review on your thoughts on that would be awesome!
If you're not tweaking, basically just using the stock built-in IR/cabs, which factory sounds are better to you between Captor X and Reactive Load IR ?
You and me both?!?!? Just bought a Rockett Majestic and the Rockett I.Q. Compressor...... my partner's beginning to wish I had a crack habit, it'd be much, much cheaper!! :-)
Hi Shawn, new subscriber loving your content! Really interested in your camera/video set up, what do you use? Have you done a video on this topic? Cheers
Hey shawn, I notice in all the demos i've seen of the captor x it puts the twin tracks in the rear rather than front. Obviously i can run the captor into a board and adjust where the tones are but does it put everything in the rear rather than the front?
Hey Shawn, I love your demos man! Question: I've got a solid state amp that I love the sound of, could I use it with the Captor X for direct recording for all the cool features it has as opposed to only using IR's on the DAW?
Please check with TwoNotes to be sure but I do believe the TwoNotes interactive load boxes are one of the very few that can be used with a solid-state amp. Thanks so much for watching my content and for the kind words!
@@ShawnTubbs I did and they told me the Torpedo Captor X specifically has an insulated load, so it can be used with any solid state amps no problem. Very helpful guys by the way. I thought this was useful data. Keep up the good work!
Very helpful video thanks! Just ordered mine a few days ago. Some people complain that these recorded sounds can be too "direct" sounding. Do the reverbs and moving the mics back help with that? thanks for the video!
Hello Shawn, considering the type of tones you're primarly after, I was wondering if you had the chance to try the Bogner Helios Amplifier. It would be a great fit for you I think :)
Great demo. Thanks! I wonder how it feels compared to an amp, if the response is the same, if the sound carries like an amp and cab does with the same settings or if it breaks up early.
If you sit next to your amplifier and play, the response will be the fastest for obvious reasons. There will always be a very slight latency when you run your amp into a reactive load box followed by software but it is indeed very slight. As far as the actual response curve goes or "feel", Two Notes pretty much wrote the book on that. As far as the amp breaking up early or later, it depends on the cabs you choose within the software. I always stick to V30 type models because I'm very familiar with how that speaker responds to my amps. So for instance, if I'm used to how my 60-watt V30 cab reacts to my amp and I choose a 25-watt greenback model in the software, the speaker itself will break up sooner than the V30.
Hey Shawn. hope you'e doing well and staying safe. How would you compare the Captor X against the UAD Ox? I know they're not exactly the same thingy, but there is some overlap. Do you prefer your trusty Ox?
Thanks Darin, my family and I are doing well and I hope you and yours are staying healthy. I still prefer my OX. It just has more horsepower sonically but that being said, the Captor X is really impressive, especially for the price. The Captor X is certainly better for live use and allows for loading 3rd party IR's as well as midi control. Software-wise I prefer the OX because it's easier to navigate and it also allows for using 2 choice mics on a cab as well as a stereo or mono room mic. That's a big deal for me but not for others. I guess it just boils down to your needs and personal taste.
Shawn, quick question; do you feel the 3-position toggle switch to select the cabinet volume is adequate v. having a continuously variable cabinet output knob? Another terrific demo, thanks.
It's hard to say how the 3 position attenuator will perform without a continuously variable control in a live gig environment. I listened to the two positions and they both sounded fine, but it's hard to say if the "club" position will work for everyone, especially if you're using a non-master amp.
You're right, the mono to stereo algorithms are usually designed to be heard in.. stereo. Mono summing is usually not great, better work in mono start to finish in that case.
Confused. I have an Ox. One unit does all. If I go fir one of these. Portability. I remain torn 8 or 16 ohm? Any recommendations. All amps have 4 /8 /16. But majority of cabs I own are 8 ohm. Also am I reading this wrong - The manual says: "FULL: the attenuator is bypassed. The full power delivered by the amp is passed on to the cabinet. If I go direct to board live. I need to not screw up the board and forget it’s on full, ever. There is still load protection though right?
@@ShawnTubbs wait wait r u serious? Can you tell me the model of your switcher? That’s a game changer the only reason I hadn’t picked up the switcher is because I was under the assumption that each amp would need its own captor to work as the cabinet. I currently have the torpedo reload which requires the wall of sound plugin which of course comes at the cost of latency even at 16 samples setting. I am assuming using the signal sent directly to the interface even with the IR built in is latency free?
@@floridapunkarchivist Ampete 88S. It can switch up to 8 amps. I believe there is an Ampete switcher that will switch 4 as well. www.ampete-engineering.com/products/switcher-series/ampete-444/
@@guillaumepille that's fair! I suppose if I'm carrying two Amps around, two of these compact loadboxes won't be too much extra hassle haha! Looks like a great product, and a great demo by Shawn. Thanks for the reply!
Hey Michael. It really depends on your needs and budget. If you prefer the option of using different mics, and rooms as well as third party IR's, the Captor X will be excellent for you especially at the price point. I hope you're doing well!
I would like to know how low of volume I could go with the switch in the back set to low ? I understand I could use the headphones. But I just prefer to play at low volumes. Thanks
I might have missed it in your video but as far as the attenuation goes there are only 3 levels of attenuation correct? On my Weber Mass 150 you just dial down the attenuation level.
Hi Shawn, what if or is it even possible to run one of the virtual cabinets through your real cabinet instead of monitors? Would it work/ how does it sound?
I'm most interested in the attenuator in this thing. How good is it and how much can it attenuate? What is a good transparent attenuator for medium to high gain amps?
Hi, can i use the Torpedo Captor x with my Roland blues cube Stage 15w? my main goal is to shut the volume and record with headphones,i have only line out at the back of the Amp,will it serve it's purpose ? thanks.
Is the OX twice the price better? To me, it is, but my opinion is not so much based on "which is better" as much my needs. I really prefer a dedicated room and mic model along with the ability to choose mic combinations for the cabs. The onboard effects on the OX are exceptional as well and for the most part, the OX has more horsepower but it does come at a price. I thought the Captor X was exceptional sounding, especially at that price point, and it has features that I've not seen elsewhere like the "twin tracker". The software on the Captor X is intuitive and easy to navigate and I was very impressed with the XLR outs as opposed to the TRS outs on most. The Captor X will definitely travel better do to its size and the XLR outs are far better suited for a live gigging environment.
@@ShawnTubbs Thanks very much for that. I think for me I'll stay on the OX path. A bit more saving but my main application will be recording tracks at home where I have no option to mic a cab rather than touring.
@@Grant_Ferstat If I may, two notes has a whole range of products, and Captor X is not the flagship, take a look at the Torpedo Studio maybe, or Reload if you don't plan to travel with the unit.
I think Justin is correct. There's always going to be variables to consider that are unique to each player and the gig environment they're in but the -20DB "club" setting is really good. Is it perfect? Hard to say.
I can't help, but for the first time your sound is not as beefy, full and chimy as in your other videos. No matter what you use, at the end it's all about the sound, isn't it?
@@paulyougreat9106if you have some time it would be interesting that you come to our Facebook Two notes Community forum to share your thoughts. We don't talk about a 4 knobs units, there are many options to be considered. Would be awesome if you had some reference real recording of your rig to compare with what you're getting with the Captor X.
The Suhr Reactive Load IR is exceptional and is perfect for the guitarist that just wants to use IR's. Not all guitar players are the same. I have a Suhr RLIR and I think it's fabulous, but I still use my OX because I really need the ability to make quick adjustments like turning down a mic on a cab or adjusting the room mic while I'm in my workflow. The Captor X and the OX are better suited for players that prefer to tweak things a bit.

* The questions I'm about to ask and detail with my scenario come from a specific place that I haven't seen many others mention and I'm looking for the simplest, of simplest ways to use this setup,
I want to :
* keep all my amp heads; the 20,50,100w ones and use this Captor X to be able to play at home volumes
*
Right now even my 20w Friedman runt head (great master volume tbh ) through my 1x12 with greenback is too damn loud for townhouse practice volumes if i want to play after work at night past 5pm which is only free time 90% of the time with the master vol past 1.5
*
let alone even touching my bigger 50 or 100 w in this equation, really even 20 can be loud maybe it's my space walls room wood idk but that's where I'm at right now lol ;
SO
* Is all I need to do to make this work ;
* my guitar - amp - CaptorX ( choose a cab preset like 4x12 with blackbacks or V30s ) - then interface - out to 2 speaker monitors = then start playing? No massive shelf and desk filled with other studio gear mixers pre amps and see of wires etc etc ?
^
* I've never bought tech like this or fiddled with drag and drop plug ins on a computer and dialing things up for hours; as you can tell- and that's exactly what I don't want to spend doing, sitting and dialing these virtual computer speakers simulations for hours -
So I need to know if you think
* the Captor X can actually emulated the sound of classic speakers I love like my 20 w greenback in my 1x12 and 2x12 marshall cab with V30s ?
* It's really good enough of a tone that is close to the real thing ?
*
Surely if Pete thorn , George lynch and Phil X , Shawn tubbs (you ;) aka tone junkies who are used to high end, coveted vintage cabs and speakers love it with their stamp of approval - then it must sound pretty damn good for home uses then ??
* And most of all ;
* Are the speaker emulations EASY to use dial in presets ?
* Or will i have to sit for hours the first night with my captor X and drag drop and move things all over a computer screen just to get some tone ?
* as cool as the sound could be I don't want to buy a ton of other gear with this captor to get the sound of speakers in a quieter way or spend hours clicking through presets- are the simple 4x12 greenback or 4x12 V30 emulations good enough to NOT sit all day tweaking ?
* OR is it like being your own studio man and every different preset has a learning curve that can take a long time to just nail for say the 20w Friedman or 50w ceriatone ?
^
*
I wouldnt call myself a purest ; just that at home I'm used to plugging the chord into my Friedman runt or 50w Morris, into my 1x12or 2x12 and play with maybe slight reverb in the fx loop - boom thats it and i can play.
* So I always told myself if i go this digital route it has to be simple to setup and sound good, because right now I live my 1x12 and 2x12 but those cabs costed money that isn't really getting used to its full potential by playing amps in a townhouse with volume set to 1/ 1.5 just seems like shame to keep a big 2x12 especially without really getting its full use ..
*
Yes, Attenuators exist, but not a solid one until you get into 1k - 2k range it seems, after talking to a few friends I found the 2 notes captor X and of course watching your video and many others I have been hooked on what it could potentially offer for some time now since I live in a setting with
" noise limitations " this Captor X reallyy looks like the ticket for me.

Have had a Torpedo Live for several years and love it, but this looks like a better form factor for using live....come here wallet....
I just bought one for my mesa single rec.
Yet to try it out.
But, what I’m really getting from your video, is I can get an excellent clone of my usual rock tones through a 4x12 v30 Marshall cab.
But, I can also get the amp to sound totally different with different boxes and microphones to expand the tonal opportunities from my amp that I can’t get unless I have a load of real boxes and mic’s that can make the amp sound like a different brand/amp, if you know what I mean
Very excited.
You're an ace player. Love your phrasing!
Thanks very much!

I don't know about you guys, but I see this man grab a guitar and play it, and I hit that like button!! thumbs up everybody!!
Been using the Torpedo for almost every video I make, especially since military housing doesn’t appreciate vintage Marshalls.

Thank you for your service.
It's a real treat just to listen to you playing all those tasteful guitar parts.
Great vid, Shawn!
That intro!!!! 🤟🏻
Wish this had MP3 clean through … for practicing .. so, you can run ur guitar and effects … by jam along with either a backing pedal (Trio) and/or MP3 or Bluetooth audio.
That would be cool!
Great video - I will probably get one soon
Now if they just become in stock somewhere in the US it would be nice. Not as bad as Spark with them taking $$ 5 months before delivering (sans all the youtubers). Will be picking up a Captor X at some point when it comes available. I’ve been tempted to order from Andertons as they’ve had them on and off.
Andrew it's shipping now! :)
Great review. Thanks.
and Another Great little tune....
I have no chance to try them both and I am very undecided... what interests me most is the sound quality and the touch response, without too many frills, but having a few more possibilities (as in the captor) intrigues me...
man, that is a killer intro. mind if I steal it?!! I've been needing to dial in my firebird!!

Hi Shawn! As always, amazing demo!
I might have missed it in the video, but I was interested to know if it's possible to use the reverb from the Captor X when the amp is connected to a speaker cab, and the Captor X is acting as an attenuator?
Thanks!! It's not possible to hear any of the software functions of the Captor X through your amps speaker cabinet.
So... We’re you even plugged into an amp or was everything going through the capture X and software…? Great video as always ..! Cheers
Thanks very much. The amp I used is my Friedman BE 100 DLX.
Man so dig your videos! Which one of the IRs do you like the best Suhr or 2 notes?
Great tone!!! I use a Triaxis and Vht 2092 power amp in stereo with a 2290. What do you recommend for stereo application without buying two?
Good question. I don't think there is a reactive load box that has stereo SPEAKER inputs as of yet. I know the Two Notes Studio has stereo LINE inputs. I would think you would have to have two in order to run your rig.
Extremely informative as always. Could you comment on using it for playing live with a signal routed FOH and to a monitor?
I've not used the Captor X live but I think it would be ideal because it allows you to route different signals to FOH and monitors as well as the mic'd cab if you want.
Hey Bro, I'm new to these IR Boxes. With this one, can I use the attenuator AND the XLR's at the same time in a live situation? or is this one or the other? Another great vid!
you can use both. :)
Shawn Tubbs thanks Shawn
Was the Captor able to handle your 100 watt head no problem? No red flashing or anything else? I know it's rated for 100 but heads like the Superlead build I am in the middle of put out a lot more wattage.
I didn't run into any issues but it's always best to reach out to Two Notes.

I hadn't heard about that! I'll look into it, thanks for the heads up!

Thanks for watching and subscribing. My cameras are older Canon EOS 70Ds with the kit lenses.
Hey shawn,
I notice in all the demos i've seen of the captor x it puts the twin tracks in the rear rather than front.
The mic positioning is important and you can certainly get more of a "room" sound by moving one back.

Dude you are a tasty player.
Hello Shawn, considering the type of tones you're primarly after, I was wondering if you had the chance to try the Bogner Helios Amplifier. It would be a great fit for you I think :)
Bogner builds great amps.
Sounds like Mooer Radar + Attenuator +reactive load
Robert, Two notes pioneered that type of product in 2008. ;)
Did you use xlr in both left and right?
Yes.
Great demo.
@@ShawnTubbs Thanks! Technology is definitely starting to reach the point we have been waiting for.
Hey Shawn. hope you'e doing well and staying safe.
Great video...did you try this thing with pedals?
Yes, I did and there were no issues.
In mono (phone speaker) the twin track setting sounds quite phasey.
You're right, the mono to stereo algorithms are usually designed to be heard in.. stereo. Mono summing is usually not great, better work in mono start to finish in that case.
Can i use a 100w mesa dual rectifier with volume at noon on the captor x? Ive heard that the captor x fan noise sounds like it may explode?
I've not heard of anything like that happening but you should reach out to Two Notes.
In my opinion, the 8-ohm option is best. The attenuation has no effect on the XLR outputs to the mixing console.
Hello there...when you switched amps..was that amp also using a captor or did you mic it?
The amp I switched to was also running into the Captor X.
@@ShawnTubbs as in u have more than one captor x right? I have 3 amps so if I had the ampete switcher I would need 3 captors correct?
@@floridapunkarchivist You only need one Captor. The amp switcher is capable of switching multiple amps to one speaker cab or load box.
Can you also use the usb out/in as an interface to load into garageband for example?
I don't think that is possible.
Would be great if you could plug 2 amps into this so you can use your own stereo effects instead of just their room algorithms
Tom you'd need two loadboxes, so at least a box twice as big, to be safe. The idea here was to stay compact.
@@guillaumepille that's fair! I suppose if I'm carrying two Amps around, two of these compact loadboxes won't be too much extra hassle haha! Looks like a great product, and a great demo by Shawn. Thanks for the reply!
@@TomGledhillMusic 2 amps with 2 Captor X? That's the rig dreams are made of. :)
What is that awesome chord at 10:35? Some sort of D6?
It's actually Bmin6.
Can this be used with pedals only, like Revv G3 or other preamps? Or does the "speaker in" works only with speaker out from an amp?
Thanks for the question. There are no "line inputs" for use with a preamp.
Simple question... When I plug in the headphones... does my amp cut out for use in an apartment?? Thanks in advance....
When using the Captor X, you don't have to use the speaker in your amp.
Will the effects in the captor X pass through to the cab when using a cab, like the Tube Amp expander? Or do the effects only work with the XLR outs?
I’d really like to know this, too!
I think the speaker out on these load boxes is an unaffected signal straight from the amp so it bypasses the cab sim interface.
@@geomusicmove I think you are right.
Shawn, what would you recommend for purely going direct for recording?
Hey Michael. It really depends on your needs and budget. If you prefer the option of using different mics, and rooms as well as third party IR's, the Captor X will be excellent for you especially at the price point. I hope you're doing well!
Shawn Tubbs Thanks Shawn, I’ll check it out. We’re literally hanging in! Hope you’re well too bro.
I would like to know how low of volume I could go with the switch in the back set to low ?

I think the low setting is a 38db cut so it's really quiet.
I might have missed it in your video but as far as the attenuation goes there are only 3 levels of attenuation correct? On my Weber Mass 150 you just dial down the attenuation level.
Yes there are just the 3 levels of attenuation.

@@ShawnTubbs ok, thanks for letting me know.
How does the headphone output sound for silent practice? And does the space knob/stereo reverb help simulate an "amp-in-the-room" sound? Thanks!
The headphone out is maybe the BEST part. We created stereo reverb algorithms- to do EXACTLY that! It's pretty amazing.
Paul - you can’t replace the physics of the room ... did you adjust the reverb settings on the app?
I'm most interested in the attenuator in this thing. How good is it and how much can it attenuate? What is a good transparent attenuator for medium to high gain amps?
It can attenuate up to 38db in the lowest setting but if your primary need is attenuation, I would look at the Tone King Iron Man attenuators.
@@ShawnTubbs i suspected the Tone King thanks!

@@ShawnTubbs They gave me an answear that straight out of the box is the answear is no, Diy job should be done here .thanks.
I think you could connect the Roland's speaker out to the captor. Two Notes say solid state amps are OK with the load.
So..getting my head around this. What does this lack that OX has? OX is almost twice the price in Australia. Anyone heard both to compare?

I would love to hear your thoughts on the attenuation part of this unit. How good is it?
Ken- I'll let Shawn respond if he's able. The short answer is 'really good' the -20db setting is perfect for gig volume and -38 is REALLY quiet.

The Suhr Reactive Load IR is exceptional and is perfect for the guitarist that just wants to use IR's. Not all guitar players are the same.
