What Happens if You Die after Grabbing the Flagpole? (SMB Glitch Demonstration)

  • A very old & important Super Mario Bros. glitch, demonstrated in 5-2, 6-1 and 6-3, leading to different endings.
    Grabbing the flagpole when Mario's at the right edge of the screen can send Mario to the left side of the screen, sometimes causing death after the flagpole.
    If Mario touches a solid object (not including a lift), you'll enter next stage after over 2 minutes of music; if not, you'll be stuck in a loop forever.
    Don't miss the moments in 6-3 in which Mario falls down from the sky, and the flag reappears during the loop.

    If you do this when there's very little time remaining you can transition pretty quickly

      remember that one glitch world with flags that dont work? try that glitch there and see what happens

    I was always under the impression that the game was effectively softlocked if Mario died after grabbing the flagpole. I didn't know it was possible to wait 2 minutes and a half for the game to potentially continue.

    So what I'm thinking, this is merely a guess... If and when Mario comes into contact with a block that stops him, it counts the timer down. But being as Mario has fallen off the bottom of the screen, it attempts to do the death sequence, and the victory walk combat each other. But, being as the timer has counted down, or is counting down when it happens, Mario's position will eventually overflow at the bottom, and put him up into the sky instead, where the music stops stuttering and pushes him forward to the next level. Which is the inverse of what happens when you use a cheat for infinite jumping. You go up too high, you wrap around to the bottom and you restart the level immediately with one less life.

    I think I found a new glitch, but that'd require the TAS to perform:
    1. Clip into the ground bouncing off an enemy (as big Mario)
    2. Break the castle brick (when Mario enters the castle he hits an invisible brick that simply puts him behind the foreground - and yes, that brick is breakable)
    3. Grab the flagpole - this will make Mario go past the castle and walk endlessly
    3-1 seems the perfect level to do so (I guess).

      Yeah maybe. I think every hole have the same "depth". Eventually Mario would fall down from the sky if he didn't die. :D

    Interesting. It really gives strong hints in how the game and probably the NES actually work. To be honest, I am surprised at the "depth" of the hole. How did they do it seeing the great memory limitations of the time?

    The first glitch i saw before but thr 6-3 one was weird, does it have to do with falling platform?

      The 6-3 glitch has nothing to do with the falling platform. It would happen in any situation like that, but in SMB, I guess it can only happen in 6-3.

      @@Kosmicd12 Oh yeah I think you're right. I just did a quick test. Bumping into the lift in 6-3 doesn't count as running into a block. :)

      @@EliasHasle No effect. Only holes and Firebars have effects after the flagpole.

      No scrolling mario all the way to the right is fairly easy, especially the wine glitch that was done in 5-2

      No it's not TAS only. It can be demonstrated without using TAS, but I think it's more fun using TAS.
