The Game Gear was a handheld I did own back in the day and I also share some game play that I bought growing up as well. Did you grow up with Game Gear? What do you remember playing? I recently bought a gamegear off eBay to revisit games from my youth. Especially NBA Jam. Loved that game. Games and system are in incredible condition. Got it in the mail, turned it on and no picture. Sound is awful too. So I purchased new capacitors and I'm in over my head. I'm afraid I'll never get it repaired. But some day I hope to play it.
Even if you have minimal soldering skills, then the re-cap of a Game Gear is easy. There as quite a few vid's on RUclips showing how it's done. The main thing is to make sure that you get the polarity of the Caps right.
+ If you have not already disassembled the Game Gear, you will need a 4.5mm Gamebit screwdriver or a melted BIC pen to get the screw in the cart slot out, the rest are just plain Philips screw headed one's.
Sellers on ebay will fix it right up for ya. I got a mc will lcd mod done by gamegears4you. Excellent guy. Great service. Check it out if you're serious.
@@bigceelos I saw some of the modded ones they looked real nice. How much did it cost you?
@@bigceelos I tried looking it up on eBay but nothing came up for gamegears4you. I saw some others.

Fatal Fury Special and Bobble Bobble looks great. I want to try them out now that you mention them.
One of my favorite consoles, my grandma got me a blue game gear when I was little. I’ve rebought everything she got me and more. A couple weeks ago I found out about custom game cases and I’m so excited to get purple clamshells for my games!
Here from Italy , I am 52 , i don't hunt for complete collection , at the moment i have The console complete in box , the tv tuner in box , the Master Gear Converter in box and 74 games , 64 complete in box and 10 carts only with custom boxes made by myself using empty Nintendo DS replacement cases with custom covers. Game Gear is my favorite portable console of all time !
How well do they fit in DS game cases? I had not heard of that before. Sounds like a great way to display them!
Great video thank you for sharing your collection
Hey John- I always appreciate your videos; keep up the awesome work!
Awesome collection! I love my Gamegear and my small collection. After seeing yours I'm gonna def try to get a few of those titles for mine.
I just finished my complete US Game Gear collection a few months ago! Also got dupes of games for multiplayer support. I'm using 3-ring binders with plastic sheets designed to hold Game Boy carts, but it's jut big enough for GG carts (minus the Codemasters games). Loved Sonic 1/2 as kid, and really got into Dragon Crystal. The color screen was *amazing*, but I never really took it outside because it'd suck up batteries like nothing. Was always tethered to the wall. Good times.
Stranger stranger now that’s a gamegear collection! 😱😱😱😱👍
Hell of a collection. I love the Sega Game gear so much
1000 thanks!!! I loved gamegear back in the day.
Great video, John. Thx for sharing.
Choplifter 3 is definitely one of my favorites to play and I still have it 29 years later when I got my game gear christmas of '93. Been thinking of building my game gear collection up as I've been doing with all my other systems I have. Great video and great insight into what I don't have
Was my 1st console. Got it for xmas 1990 with columns, paperboy and super Monaco GP. Loved it. Built up a nice collection, but sold it off for Saturn games, which I sold off for dreamcast games. Still have the dreamcast and games (pal dreamcast with about 60 games). Was actually gutted about GG micro. They should have just released all 16 games on a compilation similar to the megadrive (genesis) collection that they did on PS4 etc.
Great video John. Always was envious of people
With the Game Gear. I had a game boy and loved it though.
I’m just starting to collect for this system. Currently going to upgrade one of my screens with the mcwill mod. This will help in my quest. Thank you
I have the tv tuner adapter. Back in the early 90s I worked as a parking lot cashier in the summer and would watch tv on my game gear when the parking lot wasn't busy.
Glad to see the Sega Game Gear getting some love.
I loved my Game Gear when I was younger. Mortal Kombat and Ren & Stimpy were the two games I played the most on it. I also had Sonic 2 and a Solitaire game my Uncle gave me.
I always thought Mk1 was a great port personally and also loved the Shinobi series on here.Great video John \m/
My Game Gear collection consists of one cart at the moment. This has definitely inspired me to pick some more up!! Way more than the mini ones have!!
I had the game gear as a kid, why I got it instead of the Gameboy still surprises me to this day. I had to carry it in a hard protective case with the power adapter because those batteries wouldn't last at all. Sonic 1, Batman Returns, and the Donald Duck game were the standout games I had. I would literally bring it with me wherever I could and watched over it like a hawk just in case someone tried stealing it from me. I still have it to this day, although it needs to be recapped.
Sonic Triple Trouble and Aladdin were my jam. Those games were life changing.
The Game Gear was my handheld of choice back in the Nineties. I never saw Dizzy for sale back then but I loved his games from UK home computers (Amstrad and Spectrum were great systems in the Eighties) but I’d have snapped that up the second I saw it. Back at the time, my go-to games for the Game Gear we’re Sonic 1 (of course), Columns, Out Run, Mortal Kombat 1, and Wonder Boy. So many hours of gaming fun. :)
Nice collection of Game Gear Games! I got into the Game Gear, in the late 90's! Got some boxed games, when Majesco, was selling the Game Gear and some games, at rock bottom prices! It's not a bad little system! Good video!
Me, I'm a Big Game Gear Fan. The thing I like most about collecting for the Game Gear is that it is REGION FREE + un-boxed game's are normally very cheap, except for the rare games of course, but even those are not astronomical in price usually. The most I've ever paid is £20 and that was for a boxed copy of Streets of Rage, but it is in immaculate condition. So for under £200, I have 56 games + an extra 11 duplicate copies of some and 8 of these are also boxed with instructions.
Great video I loved the game gear. I even had the adapter that lets you play master system games on it.
I remember as a kid in the early 90’s seeing a GameGear in a shop window as I was walking past. I instantly stopped and ran back to get a closer look. All I’d seen as far as handhelds went at that stage was a GameBoy and being familiar with how games looked on that system you can imagine how blown away I was seeing Sonic in full colour with a backlit screen way back then!... I asked my folks for one for Christmas but got a GameBoy instead. Can’t say I was unhappy with that, but I never forgot seeing that GameGear for the first time.
You're amazing man, keep being you ✊
Another excellent retro video from the man himself: The Immortal John Hancock! Great video John!
What a butt kisser.
My brother had a Game Gear as a kid. I miss that thing.
Amazing collection John! I love the game gear, I still have my collection from back in the day and I'm currently going for a complete US release set, right now I'm a little more than half way.
Man what an awesome collection. I love game gear. My collection is ok. The games I play the most are battletoads, Taz mania, castle of illusion, and X-Men. Eventually I plan on getting mega Man.
I'm new to the channel and love your videos
👍👍
Game Gear is one of my faves! I Iive in Scotland and play my GG regularly. This vid is a help as I just buy stuff I think I'll enjoy as I usually play it when my gf is playing her games on the tv, like Yooka Laylee and so on lol luckily I've had it modded with McWill screen so it's such a joy to play! My fave games are Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (I know most ppl hate it but i love it lol) and Sonic 1.
Hi, from another Scottish Game Gear FAN. The McWill screen's for the Game Gear and the Lynx have been on my list for a while.
Same here. My favorites are sonic 2, putt n putter and columns
Love mine, I find it easier with a flash cart though 😂
My parents bought me a GameGear years ago. I remember running with my friends out to the car after church so we could plug in the cigarette lighter adapter. Later my best friend got one and we would swap games. Good memories. I bought one off Craigslist a few years ago and enjoy pulling it out occasionally, but that screen is hard on my (older) eyes, and I haven’t wanted to sink the money into a screen replacement.
I remember the game genie!
I loved the gamegear growing up. I've gone through 2 of them. The capsitors they came with are junk and that's usually the leading cause to the system not working anymore. I bought one that came with an updated screen, sounds and new capsitors. It also came with a travel bag, ton of accessories and games. I got a fairly uncommon game in it as well. It's the vampire one, side scrolling awesomeness. Great music and playability. Awesome job with the vid John 👍
John, your video has inspired me to dig out my Game Gear and get to work. My poor old blue sports edition Game Gear needs a recap now to be usable. Lost audio first, now video has faded out. Time for the soldering iron.
this was my very first game console, got it on 13/12/92 with the sega game pack 4 in 1 box
Nice! I got a collection of over 40 BOXED game gear games including most all of the Sonics and boxed Pete Sampras tennis! And around 10 loose.
Awesome, man!!
Always great to see the Game Gear getting some love! I was saving up to buy one back then but my parents surprised me on Christmas. Stargate is an absolute hidden gem puzzle game. I haven't added any since the 90's but it is a system I want to collect for. Currently I have 14 games.
IJH what suggestions do you have for getting Game Gear systems updated/repaired? I have 2 in my collection and neither of them is functional. I always hear about hetting them recapped and the McWill mod which sounds great, but I'm not able to do that myself.
Edit: I've seen online sites doing box repros with included cart trays if you ever want to have those displayed.
Was never a huge GG fan...I am and will always be a Sega fan but I didn't get a GG until years later for collecting. I had an Atari Lynx soon after launch. To get a GG would be a step backwards for me at the time as the Lynx was a power house compared. But I later appreciated what the GG brought to the table along with the rich Sega heritage at the time. There were plenty of games for it and a lot of known titles such as you said,Sonic games for example. If thats what you had, there were plenty of choices of games to play on. I don't have the nostalgic attachment like others but I could see it. Thanks for sharing John!!!
Your collections are always impressive to see! I've been thinking for a long time about getting some of the games from the 3DS eShop, but I don't know what's good since I never had a Game Gear.
This is very awesome
Just scored Super Space Invaders today too, sweet
Man I LOVE the Game Gear and love the games for it. Mega Man is my all time favorite and still have the original cartridge that my dad bought for me brand new back in the days. I wished I would have been a wiser kid and saved the retail box and everything. Nonetheless it is still my favorite console of all time!
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie was my favorite Game Gear game growing up. Not to be confused with the regular Mighty Morphin Power Rangers game! It’s a solid fighting game that felt satisfying had great music. I never see anyone talk about it!
That game is SO MUCH fun. I love those power ranger games on game gear. Lots of fun and its cheap to pick up :)
I did a let's play of those 2 games back in 2018 or 2019
I didn't play Game Gear until my uncle and aunt let me borrow theirs. I think i was about 7,8? I fell in love with Super Columns since I was a huge Tetris fan and they didn't have much else besides maybe a solitaire game. Since I was using the handheld so much I asked my grandma and mom if I can get games for it at a local store we had, "Hills" it was called. The number 1 game i wanted to get... Sonic! I got Sonic 1 and realized I couldn't spin dash.. The first Sonic game isn't all that great... I must of gotten 2 soon after that?! But the real K.O. of sonic games was Sonic Chaos!! Great game, great music one of the best on the system. Sadly, I had to give my uncle and aunts system back.. I was heart broken.. I didn't play one until years later working at a video game store. Since Im a huge handheld fan I love collecting for the system and it does have some great games.
Just wanted to through out another of my favs as a kid. - George Forman KO Boxing!
I was more a Game Boy user those days, but still that is a really nice collection and library of games.
I need about 5 or 6 games
to complete my set. I’m also trying to get the manuals as well. The codemaster games are the hardest to get. Pete Sampras Tennis is the most expensive one of the US set.
Congrats on your journey. What are you missing?
Fantastic Dizzy
Pete Sampras Tennis
Ristar
Tempo Jr.
Vampire - Master of Darkness
The Simpsons - Bartman meets Radioactive Man
Fantastic Dizzy and Pete Sampras Tennis are going to be expensive! I have been collecting for GG at least 10 years off and on.
The G.G Shinobi games are awesome
I would not mind seeing more Game Gear!
I remember when it came to choose which handheld I was going to buy there was no contest between the popular but sadly black and white Gameboy and the less supported but modern colour Game Gear. Column came with the console but it was playing Sonic, Outrun and DuckTales that are my fondest memories. I had the magnifying glass but rarely used it. A 64 bit Game Gear 2 would be great.
Does your copy of the majors pro baseball work on your retron 5 I cant get my copy to work on it.
I feel like game gear games in general are uncommon but it's a cool little system to collect for. Also, i had no idea about some of those games, thanks :D
Game Gear is a system I'm growing in love for, although I haven't been able to stumble across a working handheld for a while! (I'll have to get one fixed!) Though I play my cartridges fine through my Retro Freak on TV!
I lived off MK1 on the game gear as a kid. I was more surprised the Secret blood code still worked.
That's a lot of GG awesomeness
My Game Gear memories here in Germany: Nobody had one, I only learned from it in magazines :D
Everybody had NES, SNES, Gameboy, Genesis, Master System, but nobody I knew even considered buying one,
which sounds strange to me these days, since it would have been the better mobile gaming experience. Not only
that it has colours, but you could see in the dark when playing secretly under the blanket :D
Nice Sega game gear collection
Recently got a game gear, and devilish is one of coolest breakout clones
Aswome collection!!!
Got my first game gear in November 1996 I was so happy omg I was
Nice game gear collection
Yup I wanrt a full set. NOW 🤦♂️ Great vid John pone thing I remember about the game gear was the cost lol not cheap at all
Just started going for a loose US set myself. I'm particularly fond of the portable fighters - the Power Rangers games are way better than they deserve to be. Glad to see how much physical space the whole set (doesn't) take up.
As a kid, I never even heard of Game Gear. I learned about it from the internet. I got one GG (but I traded it for games) and while it found it neat, it lacked something like Pokemon.
But right now, if I find one, I would have to fix and clean it. Time isn't kind with it, that's for sure.
I love Dragon Crystal!
I would love for Sega to publish a Game Gear cartridge collection for Evercade !
Hook! Love that game 😃
Thank you for sharing your collection, it must have been a pain in the rear to arrange them in alphabetical order. Great job!
john forget the haters please keep uploading your a great person/dad my son and i enjoy all your videos
nice burkinstocks!
Love it x-men sega gear
Great vid John. Question for you... how many games have you finished?
I heard you can patch game gear games to run on master system. Meaning you can load them on the everdrive and use on genesis!
I definitely had a Game Gear as a kid and it was quite impressive when compared to the Game Boy...
And then the battery life happened.
I just started getting into the gg like a week or so before they said about the gg micro coming out lol
That must have put you off then 😂
O God I didn't even think there were that many games that released for the Game Gear.
A lot of these games were released on the Master System in PAL regions. Dragon Crystal, Speedy Gonzales cheese catastrophe just to name a couple
Could you make a video of games that were both on Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis. I've always been curious. Growing up I only knew about the Super Nintendo.
Tails game look fun and crystal warriors also, shinobi 1 and 2, double dragon and maybe robotnik and columns
I just saw a listing on my local FaceBook marketplace that has new old stock of 4 game, each game NIB is running around $15
Those micro GG are such a missed opportunity. They should have made one system normal size and those 16 games If not more.
3 more years have past John. So have you finally aquired a Sega Super Wide Gear? They are nice you know.
I have one of the X men games and both power rangers for my game gear also Aladdin
Hi I own two original Sega Genesis model 1 systems and Sega game gear I bought all 3 off ebay
Today all you need to put your new Game Gear sistems is... not a box.. not a draw.. no. all you need is your jeans back pocket!!! 😎
I am going for a full PAL EU GG set (around 40% there ;) ) and maybe some US exclusives. Man, some of those little carts are quite pricey...
Wow didn't realise the US releases had such a mixed set of label styles.
John was gonna ask if you'd do a GG hidden gems video but I guess they're all hidden gems lol
got pete sampras for 50 cent in scrap yard had no idea it was rare wow
You should mod the game gear battery life
We've got a game gear video on our channel showing our collection which shows a very rare game too
Hi I have 38 Sega game gear games out of 364 I only have 326 more to go im going for a entire Sega game gear set
sativa or indica?
