@@midinerd Many Emulators are shit and have lag and other Problems mate.. but i guess you can find some good now but if you still have the Original Games at home then to buy a Real GameGear with Mwill screen shoudl be considered to say the least...
@@SugarRainer dude what emulators are you using is the question. For Game Gear I have MasterGear on Android and it works flawlessly. To be fair using the touch screen controls isnt always optimal but the emulator works great.

thank you for showing so many games I didn't even knew they existed! It is amazing how some GG games just doesn't looks like 8 bit! Programmers made some miracles over there.
I absolutely love that little lens flare effect you've added in, emulating the way the ovalish shaped outer screen cover would reflect light off the screen of the real GG. Kudos for recognizing that & implementing it so darn well. Emulator developers should be taking your effect and adding it to their GG Emulators. I gotta say, this was easily your most impressive video yet.
This is a fantastic count down. I already have shining force on the Nintendo 3DS, and loving that has made me get an original game gear. This list will help me choose what to get next! Thanks! Ace video

also psychic world is in most top lists of game gear. This is a good list though, especially good putting sonic 1 first of all sonics due to crispness and speed, that shows a real players list. Most hours i spent time wise was on putt and putter, and marble madness, very difficult games.

Worth mentioning that the Shining Force Sword of Hajya was completely remade with 16 Bit graphics and sound for the Sega CD and is part of the Shining Force CD games. It's fantastic!
An awesome list!!! Something that astounds me about the GG is just how many games there are for it! Like I could probably add another 50 to that list without much thought and they'd all be good games. It's an awesome system! Pretty easy to service (even today) as well!

Shinobi should be top 5 that was by far the best Shinobi Game, great music. also G-Lock and Woodypop should be on there..

You didn't play the other shinobi games, if you did you would know that not only it's not the best, it's the worst shinobi game.
There is absolutely nothing in that game that it's better than the others in the series, it's an absolute tedium, i know because I'm playing it right now, i have been playing the entire shinobi series in the last week's. The final level is sadistic and terrible level design, and i'm a guy who loves and "hunts" hard games, but this is just terrible, i'm forcing myself to finish this crap and when i have to force myself to play it's not a good sign.
I owned shinobi gg 2 back in those days, from what i remember it's far better than the first, but i might change my mind because it may be worse than i remember.
Nostalgia it's not objective, shinobi gg is a bad game, it pains me to say it but it's objectively true. And yes, games can be objectively bad, and you are allowed to like them that's ok.
Super shinobi 2(shinobi 3) is extremely good, you can't be serious comparing that to shinobi GG.

@@Phantom_Zer0 The final level being hard doesn't mean it's a bad game, it means you suck. There are 5 good Shinobi games: Shinobi III, Revenge of Shinobi, Shinobi 3DS, GG Shinobi and GG Shinobi 2.
It's honestly quite amazing that they were able to expand the color palette to be even greater than the Genesis with the Game Gear! It makes you wonder why it was so hard for them to do the same for the Sega CD at the very least. That's the one thing the Sega CD needed badly. The games could have really had a look far greater than the Genesis had it had the color palette it needed.
My favorite game on this system has either been Sonic the Hedgehog, NBA Jam and Mortal Kombat. There are so many fantastic games.

Oh man the nostalgia, Aerial Assault! I played that to death as a kid. Wonder boy and many others in the video too. I remember my mom getting me an ac adapter to plug the thing to the wall, because it was "the destroyer of batteries". Great video!

Great list! The first Sonic for the GG could be the best designed Sonic game ever made. Its perfectly balanced , and Yuzo Koshiros music is fantastic. Shinobi 2 es another masterpiece with a perfect balance of gameplay, level design, difficulty and music. Easily in the top ten. The Mortal Kombat versions where pretty good and remarkable efforts, but is amazing what they achieved with the Fatal Fury port, at the cost of smaller size characters you got the best portable fighting game of the era. Brilliant.
GG Shinobi 1 is for me nr 1

I took game gear on an Alaskan fishing boat {in 1990somthing} There was one game that everyone loved. I had to loan out the game gear till everyone finished it. Defenders of Oasis ! a tiny magic world to escape to from an otherwise tough hardworking place, When all the space you had to yourself was a coffin sized bunk bed. :)
Shining Force Sword of Hajya has such high levels of Nostalgia for me. I really do need to mod a Game Gear with a new screen, RGB out, Etc. I also hope the new Analogue Pocket has a screen filter similar to what you have in this video. Bang up job on the screen filter, it looks great!

Brilliant list, found some games on the list I had forgotten the name of. As a 11 year old I was disappointed with Ax Battler, but kept going back to it. I was expecting Golden Axe . Montanas NFL football was the first NFL game I ever owned and hammered it, but forgot I even played it until now.
Excellent vid! I went straight to 3DS eshop and downloaded Shining Force afterwards.
i watched this to see if shining force 2 was on the list at all. it's the only game i played much for GG. i fast forwarded through every game in your list until we hit #1 and i'm thinking 'oh great i guess it's not there at all' and then BAM! THERE IT IS! shining force 2 had secret characters, too. awesome game.

The GameGear was my first game console, which I bought for $5 when I was 9 years old. That was back in 2008, at a yard sale. It came with a few games that were alright, but I’m not sure what happened to it. It just disappeared I guess.
Fast forward to recent times, I heard Nintendo was discontinuing the 3DS, which is my favorite system. I bought a few virtual console games, including Defenders of Oasis, and I absolutely fell in love with that game.
I wanted to see what other GameGear games are worth buying before Nintendo shuts down the 3DS eShop, and after seeing your video I bought Shining Force and Shinobi.

It's nice to have the real hardware, but emulation is practically perfect for the system, and it's easy to find key titles on things like Virtual Console on DS / 3DS and WiiU too.
6:37 G.G Shinobi, the absolute favourite game of my childhood! Loved it to bits. Fan-tastic music too, as some other fellow commenter said as well.
I also absolutely loved Castle of Illusion, the first Sonic and Olympic Gold.

I gotta say buddy, you NAILED the #1 spot for this list. I actually bought Sword of Hajya back when it first came out for the GG and my god it blew me away! I had SO much fun playing the hell out of that game growing up! I really loved my GG & it amazes me that more ppl didn't enjoy it growing up. I had the rechargeable battery dildo (pack) which made the battery issues bearable, as well as the car adapter and all that jazz.

Shining Force was a random pick up in a hole of the wall comic book store when I was a kid. Absolutely blew me away. Didn't expect to see it on this list, let alone top it.

I got giddy when I saw that this posted! You do an awesome job of showing that systems that seem lame at first are actually brimming with great games.
Thanks! Truth of the matter is, there are very few "Bad" video game systems. They may not be able to compete with other systems at the time, but most systems at least have a few gems in their library that are worth checking out. Hell, even the Game.com and the Virtual Boy have a selection of good games available for them!
Anyhow, The Game Gear video is up, and I'm going to leave Sega consoles alone for a while as I feel my channel is a bit top heavy with Sega stuff for the time being - that means Saturn and Dreamcast will have to wait :D
I'm currently working on Nintendo 64, but after that I'm not sure what to do next. I might start tackling some old computer systems like the Amiga.
Looking forward to it! If you have a Game & Watch collection, you could make a list of those, although you wouldn't be able to capture the footage yourself (obviously, unless you know witch-craft). Also, the various Atari systems or ColecoVision would be cool. Whatever systems you do, I'm looking forward to them!

Btw its hard to hear your voice over the game audio, i know it takes time to balance out the audio for each recording but it does work out if you fix it in your videos. We rather hear your voice more louder than the game's audio.
Sorry. I'm not good with audio - I'm trying to learn. I'm a total novice when it comes to this video editing thing, and I don't have the best audio equipment, either. I hope to upgrade in the near future.

Great video. Something interesting to note is that the Master System Streets of Rage took something like one or two million years to come out, whereas the Game gear one came out a few milliseconds after the Megadrive version. The times might be approximated a little, but still they illustrate why the Master system version was so different to the game gear one. Although saying that, the Game gear version is my personal favourite (after the Megadrive version), but I'm happy to concede that it's probably nostalgia blindness.

When I was a kid, I had that giant GG battery pack that I'd carry everywhere I went. It was bulky, it was heavy, but it gave me 3 extra hours of play! Thanks for watching

skins4thewin I want to, it’s just getting the time to do it! I’ve got 4 or 5 that have been on the go since new year. I scrapped one (Wonderswan and Color combined - so that I could re-do it as separate lists and incorporate WS Crystal Support), and have recorded footage for several. I think the closest machine to completion is Famicom Disk System as I just need to re-record 5 (lengthy) games, sort out rank order, and compile it

@@Juganawt By the way, where did you find that rendition of the Puyo Puyo 2 track? It sounds like a 50Hz version of it or something, and it's paced SO much better than the original song! Was the game even released in Europe? I haven't been able to find that version of the song anywhere & I REALLY want to turn it into an MP3 to listen to outside of the computer.
skins4thewin it was manually speed adjusted by me to extend the length of time the track played, in order for me to fill the entire length of the honourable mentions section.
@@Juganawt Ah lol very nice, you ended up making the song even better by doing that! I really want to find a way to grab that version of the song and put it as an MP3. What percentage did you reduce the speed by the way? Perhaps I could find a way to do this myself to the original track.
I loved the 8-bit Sonic games. A lot more fun to play than the Genesis ones for some reason.
The 8-bit Sonic games are great but I much prefer the Mega Drive ones which are what Sonic is all about: fast scrollings, complex physics, full loopings, huge environments... while the 8-bit games are simpler in comparison and more like traditional platformers which is why you prefer them (but you're not alone at that). To each their own!

I also rate the SMS / GG version of Sonic 1 over the 16-bit version. It's a really nice game, but most people are either not aware of it even existing or just presumed it was a stripped down port of the Mega Drive version. There's nothing wrong with the 16-bit version, but I just like the 8-bit version a whole lot more. I think it's got a better layout and is generally more fun to play. It's a much overlooked classic, which would have gone down as one of the best games ever, if not for being upstaged by its more famous counterpart.

great video you forget Halley wars awesome shooter for the Game gear my first game on this system I love it from the start surprise you didn't mentioned on your video 🎮🎮✋✋.
+handheldgamer 78 didn't forget it. When making the video, I played the entire GG library - 370+ games. Halley Wars is okay, but the problem is it only really gets interesting and challenging about 20 minutes in, and when the game is only 35 minutes long, that's a bit of a problem!
Actually 2 of the Shining Force Gaiden games were translated the one mentioned and another one only on Sega CD unfortunately the final one was never released on Game Gear or Sega CD which kinda sucks.

Sonic 2 was the first gg i ever played.
My first gg game was aerial assault.
I loved column. I forgot the exact title, but it was very similar to puzzle fighter 2 turbo.
I slept on Gunstar Heroes; which was released a couple weeks before my birthday, but I had to get MK.
i like ur videos better than most poeple who do these best of countdowns for video games but howcome u didnt comment on the super nintendo part could u do more with commentary its good shit man thanx

Thank you for showing love to this highly underrated and often misunderstood and maligned handheld system! Even to this day some reviewers contend that the Game Gear was inferior to the Lynx. Actually in "some" aspects, the GG was better in having a larger library, slightly better graphics and lcd screen, and a slimmer case. Was it all better? No, and before I get static from Lynx owners hear me out. I own both systems and while Lynx did have separate chips for graphics including mode 7 and scale rotation, sadly Atari did NOT optimize their use to their full potential. As for the LCD screen, the 90s were an emerging time for this tech and it showed in the low res in the Lynx display. Now as for is one better than the other? No, both have great games, both were an attempt to challenge Nintendo, and both are great in their own right. It could also be said that had Atari went the Nintendo route and created the Jaguar hardware as a handheld/console, it could have made Atari return to the top. We will never know, but thanks again for giving an objective view of the GG games, it's refreshing that not all reviewers are closet fanboys ready to strike the minute their "favorite" game or console is challenged.
Good vid but mine would include Woody Pop, Slider, Halley Wars and Factory Panic
The SNK fighting games always ported well to the GG and GB.
Number 16 looks like an Adventure Island trip off honestly, but I still play it on my emulator.
i agree on the 8 bit sonic beeing better than the 16 bit one, the only gripe i have is the fact that you only get the invincibility and speed shoes power up in the very first level, and after that its like they forgot it xD

I'd be keen to see a Nintendo DS list next.
Nintendo DS is tricky, but it is do-able. See, emulation is nowhere near good enough to record, and recording the screens using a camera is ugly. You can buy a DS capture card hardware mod but it's nearly £300!
However, I've recently discovered another way of doing things. Apparently with the "New Nintendo 3DS" you can download custom firmware that allows you to stream footage to a computer via Wi-Fi.
The problem is, I don't own a "new" 3DS. I only have the old one. I'm looking to acquire a New 3DS purely for recording footage, but they're still like £160 and with 2 kids to buy christmas presents for, I can't justify that kind of money at the moment.
I will get one eventually (I'm hoping for a price drop when the Nintendo NX comes out), but if you'd like to speed up the process, then please consider supporting me on Patreon at www.patreon.com/juganawt. I haven't got a clue when it comes to the audio side of things. I'm new to this whole video editing thing. I did try to normalise audio, remove background noise and put all audio in envelopes, but any tips / suggestions on how to improve the audio would be greatly appreciated.
Not sure what you're using but the game audio should be on a separate audio track, so just lower that one a bit and it should be good.
Road Rash and the EA NHL hockey were very impressive conversions of the Megadrive. Well done by EA

So many games I never even thought were on the GG. Only just recently I came to know Turrican had a GG port!! Too bad I sold my GG back in the 90's because too few games available. It was such a drawback to own any console back then, open an USA imported magazine, and just lay tears because you knew immediately that in Europe we would have got none of those except maybe Mickey Mouse...

I liked Triple Trouble better then Sonic 2 but maybe that was because I could actually beat it. Sonic 2's first boss was so hard as a kid. Also I can't believe that neither Aladdin or Lion King made this list. They were both great games.
Is this an Emulator you're using here? The screen filter as well as the effect on the outer edges of the screen looks so authentic! I've never seen the Game Gear look this good on the big screen before! What is being used to show the footage here? Please do tell!
skins4thewin it is an emulator, yes, because at the time there was no really good way of capturing footage from the real deal. Since then, of course, there have been VGA mods and a consolised GG model that people can capture from. However, at the time of recording, there wasn’t, so this is using good old inaccurate Kega Fusion, and in post processing on Sony Vegas I tried to make it look as authentic to the real system as I could with my limited video editing chops.
@@Juganawt Ah, so that's not actually an Emulation screen filter then. Well I gotta say, you did a bang up job then cus it looks freaking amazing! The way the picture looks gave me all sorts of nostalgia with the way it actually used to look on the LCD screen back in the day.

Ax Battler looks awesome
I owned a Game Gear and don't remember loving any of the games for it. They all felt either incomplete or too easy. I should try some of these on my PSclassic. Maybe I missed the better ones.
Really enjoyed this top 50 never understood why Game Gear didn’t beat the game boy. For my it was beter in so much ways well good work on the video!
Nintendo was a powerhouse after the success of the NES. But while the GG had more capabilities, the GB was smaller, cheaper, and had much much better battery life. The GG sucked down batteries. I had the rechargeable packs and they didnt last long either, plus the tabs broke off both of them and i had to tape them to the system.
Worth noting that the other Shining Force Game Gear games do have English fan translations available. So you can triple your pleasure, triple your fun :)
For these lists, I'm sticking with retail releases. I plan to make other videos based on the best translations, hacks and homebrew games for each system.

even with it's nice black color and the bright colored screen I still prefer the Gameboy. I mean the Gameboy had more battery life and required less batteries and it's all in the games for me. Also the Gameboy was a pain to carry in your pocket but the Game Gear was even bigger
I prefer the Game Boy, too, but that's not to say that the Game Gear wasn't a great machine in it's own right. There's no doubt that GG was a superior technological experience, but Game Boy had the 3rd party support to release a library that's over 4 times bigger than the GG's...and that's where it counts for me - it's all about the games.
@Cameron McCourtney I was lucky enough that donkey kong is my first game on gb I'm 89, although I never had gbc but gba on my cousin and first game i ever beat was hulk and Jakie chan adv..
Axe Battler is really much closer to Gameboy's Gargoyle's Quest in gameplay, but a bit more difficult. In Axe Battler, you don't regain health between those random fights in the overhead sections, which would be hard enough if it weren't for the fact that if you get hit one single time during a fight, you get bounced out of the fight. WTF??? That never made sense to me. It's like your character gets scared and runs away or something. Some hero.
With all the fighting game love, I was gonna be mad if neither of the Power Rangers games ended up on the list. Very underrated handheld fighters

Lol love how that Puyo Puyo 2 track is clearly the 50Hz version too, playing all nice & slow. Way slower than it's supposed to.
All Game Gear games run at 60hz because they're not standardized by region like TV's were back then.
@@cheekydaze6018 Maybe so, but that Puyo Puyo 2 track has clearly been slowed down. If you know the song then you'll know for sure that it's been slowed down.

honestly, wonderboy the dragon's trap should've been in 2nd place in my opinion. it's such a great and timeless action adventure platformer. And Sonic 2 shouldn't really be on the list due to the small screen resulting in a game filled with "leap of faith" deaths... Sonic 1 on the other hand was a good game on the GG, even though it lacked some of the 16-bit gimmicks.
