Game Boy and Game Gear both dropped around a time in my adolescence to teach me the value of money by way of A) Not owning either one, and B) learning how much batteries actually cost. It was actually a really great lesson, and my Dad got my brother and sister involved so we all understood that in theory the money we would "save" could go to buying or renting NES games. It's actually a fond memory I still have despite the fact that we were all getting news we didn't want to hear.
I was lucky enough to have both the Game Gear and GAMEBOY growing up. Although, I have many more memories of playing the GAMEBOY, it was partly due to the Game Gear having dead batteries. I didn't have many games but I remember I did have sonic 2 and a Tetris style game called "Collumns". God I miss the 90s.
The Game Gear also had a couple really cool Shinobi games, some solid X-Men titles, and literally ALL the best Power Ranger games. I loved this system so much.
Here in Brazil we enjoyed all of these games without having a GameGear! The Master System was such a successfull console, that Sega adapted GameGear games all the time. 3 Mortal Kombat games were released.
@@BatCritic21 the irate gamer was dead on as well...i had too look several times just too make sure it was still gamesack...givin daves channel a dislike at the end cracked me up..
What I love about Defenders of Oasis is how it's a classic JRPG set in a middle eastern fairy tale world, that's totally for me. My one complaint is that there are no explanations of what each item does so I have no idea what heals and such.
My dad bought me a Game Gear with a magnifying screen to make the game look bigger but I never really played it. I wish I still had it now that I play more games.
It's also worth noting that the Game Gear isn't region locked, and the different regions had unique game libraries. No matter where you live there is an awesome import library that is actually pretty affordable compared to most systems. Half the fun of collecting from the system is ordering stuff from Japan, Brazil, and the UK for less than most NES collectors pay for their domestic games.
I grew up with alot of these for the Master System 😊. Both the Master System and the Game Gear are such underrated consoles. C'mon Sega! How about a Master System Mini!?
I’ll never forget getting the game gear for Xmas when it released, I was so excited. I popped the 6 aa batteries in it fired sonic up, and within a lil over an hour the batteries died lol
@@archibaldc.1833 Entertainment is a business, and if there is business, then I will put my claw on it. But first things first, I need to be informed to understand it.
SEGA have done a really interesting work between Game Gear and also the Nomad. Some decades ago I had my claws on a Nomad, but use it full AC to the wall. The 6 AA battery consumption was like having a 1973 Lincoln Continental in your hands.
one of my all time favorite games is surf ninjas on game gear and if you remember the movie the kid plays a game gear the entire time and the game he plays becomes the game he's living.
I had like over 40 games for Gamegear I even had a Gamegear suitcase😂😂 some of my favorites where Shinobo, strider, NBA jam te, Chuck Rock 2, choplifter and X-Men Edit: nice list the only one I heard of was Tails adventure
Defenders of oasis was honestly amazing. I was lucky enough to have a game gear at the time it was released and that game somehow fell into my hands completely randomly. I could not believe it. Way ahead of its time, cool combat system with initiative (speed) and also spells that you had to find in the actual dungeons for the genie character. Memorable characters, good pacing despite the little grinding required at times, nice twists in the story but more importantly amazingly unique setting. Arabian nights. Nothing more I could ask for as a kid, even the graphics were pretty bonkers for 92 for a handheld device, hugely influential as it was probably the first pure rpg I ever played. Finished it 3-4 times total or something. Thinking about it, it later led to dnd and a way down the rabbit hole when it comes to rpgs. Great memories. Its criminal how underrated this title is, but on the other hand the game gear was never a huge success as a handheld console, and very few games ever released on it, let alone great ones. Thanks for the nice review and memories.
My first rpg. .. was 5 or 6 at the time... loved the Arabian settin... went on to all the final fantasy... but Defender's of oasis is where it all began
Sonic Drift 2 was featured on Sonic Gems Collection, which I picked up for GameCube 14 years ago from the time I'm posting this at Toys R Us along with Viewtiful Joe 2. I really enjoyed this one.
Who knew the most faithful Jurassic Park game was on Game Gear? Even had the helicopter scene from the opening portion of the actual film and Ellie in the power bunker trying to re-prime the fuses to the fences. I'm gonna have to grab that one now...
@@eyesofnight my only problem with the game was getting to where you had to but the gwar tickets and finding out you didn't have enough money. The game never told you how much money you needed. ugh
Growing up, I only ever saw one person, an older teenager, with a Game Gear. Tiger handhelds were much more common with kids my age at the time. I was one of the lucky few that owned some of them as well as a Gameboy. Okay enough rambling. Good video RGT. Keep the nostalgia/retro vids coming.
Batman!!! That game was dope, even holding the jump button in while falling off an edge to get Batman to glide down with his cape!!! totally awesomeness 👍🏼
I dont see many Game Gear videos on YT. So thanks for taking the time to show us some great games for the system. Its awesome to see love for the GG and 32X. Cheers.
I feel that no-one talks about games on the Game Gear because, so many were just ports of Master System games. In answer to your question, I had Batman Returns for the Master System (it’s the same game) as a child, and I loved it!
Tempo I didn't even know existed for the GG. With the split screen action I could see where the GG adapter for Sonic Drift would come in handy. More viewing room for gameplay. YES...bring more retro back 85!!
I still own my original copy of defenders of oasis to this day in fact I still whistle some of the songs all the time. Crystal warriors and shining force were other amazing games.
I remember getting my Game Gear back in '93 for Christmas. I don't know if it's a hidden gem or not but RoboCop vs. Terminator is my all-time favorite game on the system. The graphics are solid and even the music is decent. I actually prefer this version over its bigger brother, the Sega Genesis. 😊
Awesome!! So glad you did this video the game gear was great. Not many videos out there on the GG hopefully you'll do a follow up on more gems. Great job.
Batman returns was amazing. So satisfying swinging on the grappling hook. Must have beaten it a dozen times. Pretty quick play once you got everything down. Also loved Streets of Rage 2 and Road Rash.
I own several game gears (one with led light) and many original games - a very unique system. Unbelivable for that time and really expensive. But the Atari Lynx was also very good!
I know this video has been out a few months now, but I wanted to contribute with one of my favorite Game Gear games that doesn't get the love I think it deserves. Aladdin for the Game Gear was a great video game adaptation of the Disney animated film that unfortunately is overshadowed by the Genesis and SNES Aladdin games. Obviously, it can't compete on the same level as its 16-bit counterparts, but you can definitely tell that a lot of love and care went into the game design with great attention to detail to foreground and background elements, very well implemented parallax scrolling, animated cutscenes, and a faithful following of the source material. In fact, I would argue that it does a much better job of following the movie than either the Genesis or SNES games.

Batman Returns was awesome on the Game Gear!! And I DID order a copy of the book, but I'm still waiting for it. Ordered a signed copy. Can't wait to read it!
I was recently watching the Game Sack episode on the Game Gear, so I was familiar with several of the picks here. They were doing a similar thing, showing how the Game Gear was better than many think. Like you, I'm also a Garfield fan, specifically from the old Garlfield and Friends cartoon. I watched that a lot through the '90s, including around the time of the Garfield games. I got the Game Gear version when it was new. I agree that the game looks pretty good, especially the main sprites like Garfield. I revisited the game a couple of years ago, as I never got very far back in the day, and I thought it was pretty good and I had more fun with it than expected. However, I did find one of the later levels to not be as well designed as others and was pretty cheap.
I see Game Gear, I click. My recommendations are Coca Cola Kid, Puzzle and Action Tant-R and Fatal Fury. Fatal Fury has the best visuals the Game Gear has to offer.
My brother's friend had one and he would bring it over and I would play a bit of it. I always wanted one but couldn't afford because I was just a kid at the time.
Love it! Please do more and I would love it if you could put a title at the bottom of the video for each game you’re talking about. I have to try that Tails’ Adventure
Thank you for showing the Game Gear some love. I love the Game Gear! Jurassic Park on the Game Gear was one of the best for the console. A personal favorite was Hook, even tho it was made on other consoles, I liked the Game Gear version the best as it's the only one I could beat!
Good selection of games! Didn't even know about most of them. Some of my favorite gems are: The Lion King, Power Rangers, Ecco The Dolphin, the X-Men games, due to the fact that Sonic 2 came with the game gear, I do have Sonic 1 for it too. I still have my game gear and all the games. I play them every once in a while.
