I bought mine in '92-'93, liked the Sonic games, Ayrton Senna race game, baseball and others but my God it would go through the batteries! Ended up getting a power adaptor for it.
Even when using modern alkaline batteries the battery life is so small! An ac adapter is a must!
my parents hated battery guzzling devices like that!
@@jobadirk6371 Well it was all on me to buy them, I was 22 at the time in the Air Force. If I were a kid still at home no way my parents would've bought them.
@@NewsmakersGamesi had a battery pack and a car adapter in the 90s i guess i never thought much of it. I had 2 battery packs they did 9 hours each.
Mine is in a box somewhere in the basement. I go down to feed it batteries every now and then like old times.
The Sega saturn!! I Fing loved mine so much. I had so many games. If only I still had those to show my kids, not that they'd care lol
Because of pokemon. Only reason game boy was able to do what it did.
My Master System adapter was a little different than pictured, it held the cartridge at a 90 degree angle so it formed a sun-shade for the screen (sort of)
It would be nice is Sega made like a, Sega Game Gear Mini XL, something smaller than the original chunky beast, but bigger than the mini, which I believe to be a console made for ants.
My friend the part where you dug out the game gear to find it broken makes you a REAL game gear guy !!
We've all been there lol
I just got my 3rd one, I love these things. Pure distilled nostalgia, I feel 30 years younger when I'm playing it lol.
Keep up the good work, this was an excellent presentation top to bottom. Your a good presenter.
It's always a shame to see consoles that just don't age well, so many broken Game Gears out there!
It's so easy to fix them
I actually still have my Game Gear. It's in near mint condition too.
Pretty sweet!
My brother had a Game Gear, so I did play Sonic and a few other games on it. I thought it was okay, but I have always been a Nintendo fan. I didn't have my own hand-held unit till the Game Boy Advance came out.
Thanks for watching! Have you ever used a Game Gear? What's your favorite game?
Sonic Chaos!
@@creativecatproductions A friend and I were just discussing how cool it would be if Sega let the Sonic Mania team do full direct remakes of Sonic Chaos and Sonic Triple Trouble in the mania engine, probably the best 2 classic Sonic games that very few people got to play
I loved sonic and Bevis and Butthead. What I hated was needing batteries like everyday
Back in the day I had one and one game that sticks in the mind was all the levels on Lemmings. Also had the big battery, TV tuner and master gear converter as I had a master system too.
It's a capacitor issue, well documented on RUclips
I had an interesting history with handhelds, I started with a Game Gear, then moved to a Neo Geo Pocket, (which was kind of a downgrade) then a GBA PS then a PSP
Thank you for mentioning the modding of game gears. Because yes the gameboy was better but the game gear is a really nice console that many have a great attachment to. There are some fantastic games on it and if you get one modded with a rechargable battery and better screen I honestly feel most would love it because other than the size not being the most portable friendly the issues many people had with using it was the horrible battery and the screen not aging the best.
Great video, I had a GG as a kid and loved it. I remember thinking it was 100x better than the GB. I recently purchased a busted GG on eBay and got it repaired, they make for fun projects and are still 100x better than GB.
game gear also has input for source, I played only with no batteries. I support a story of Tectoy in Brazil for our American brothers to know. what the Tectoy company did in the country was a great revolution at the time
Good job on the game gear!
Thank you!
The game gear is a very clean looking console, if it is in nice condition!
1:41 GENESIS DOES!…..what NINTENDON’T!
My cousin had a game gear and we used to play it all the time on road trips. The first time I saw an NEC handheld was in the movie “Enemy of The State” with Will Smith.
Darn have the sega nomad, loved that system cause you could play the regular cartilages, wonder if it still works, been sitting out side in the shed, going to have to see if it work or not.
I was 100% O.K. with the short battery life. It had color, backlit screen... and that was something I was willing to sacrifice battery life over. This was playable, whereas I felt the Gameboy was practically not very playable due to the screen. Besides, with an AC adapter for the wall and 12V DC adapter for the car, I hardly ever needed to operate on batteries.
I have had a GameGear since high-school, I bought one second-hand. It’s decent. The games are decent. I have a Sega Nomad also....It does not have problems like the GameGear....The Sega Nomad can play all cartridge based Genesis games, including Virtua Racing. 3D Polygon Graphics on a handheld from 1995....I use it with rechargeable Panasonic Ni-Mh AA batteries from the Dollar Store that I recharge with a Duracell charger....My second GameGear still works....Not well, but it works....I have the GameGear Micro, I really wish it had Space Harrier built-in.
Umm.. there are 2 different screens covers on the game gear, the early more expensive units had a glass screen which did not scratch and was replaced with a soft plastic screen when the cost reduction happened.
4:37 Poster child of corporate mismanagement.
I got a used one and quickly bought a rechargable battery pack, as its battery munching issue was well known by them. Sadly, i dropped it while walking and it never worked again. :(
10:20 samething happened to my lime green ds lite i found it in a box when i was moving i was so happy then i turned it on and the screen was just white and glitchy i was so sad until i remember i had a 3ds and found it
My friend and I bought those $30 Majesco Game Gears at Toy R Us when they came out. I wish I knew they would end up being rare, I'm not even sure if I still have it somewhere. I got an original Game Gear at some point and the build quality was definitely a lot better better, but the screen was indeed pretty bad compared to the re-release.
If the game gear is mostly master system ports, whats the point of emulating it instead of the master system? Are the ports better than the originals?
Sega game gear is a great system
If that’s a va1 board I’d got the what the fuck route, that would be clean as fuck.
It's really too bad these were not better made. It's actually hard to find a Color Computer, or TI99 4/a that is not working. But these Sega systems were kinda junky. I got a Lynx after looking at both of these in the store (I think Service Merchandise), and just not trusting the fit and finish of the Game Gear. I loved my Lynx and never felt like I missed out, but now, thirty years later, I kinda feel like I did miss something.
That's a tough call! The game gear definetly had the more well known games but some of the things the lynx was able to pull off are incredible
I HATE replacing the capacitor's in these.
I was a Game Gear kid.
U can only compare portables in their screen groups id say
O own an halfbroken and a restored gamegear.
The Game Gear was a battery eater and had capacitor issues.
I still have my Game Gear but it appears to be dead. 😣
It seems like Sega always bit off more than they could chew.
Yeah but that's what made them so interesting! Look at the Dreamcast
@@jacobjones9071 I love the Dreamcast!
@@jacobjones9071 I wouldn't classify the Dreamcast as biting off more than they could chew though.
There was nothing wrong with the Dreamcast at all though, in my opinion it was one of the best designed consoles.
They were just in financial trouble already, had a bad reputation from the Saturn(mainly due to being difficult to program for apparently), and of course the PS2 included a DVD player.
Similarly the Master System & Mega Drive had no issues, but they did go a bit wacky after the Mega Drive with all the addons etc.
It's not broken it's capacitors need changing they were bad and leaking
The original nintendo gameboy dominated the sega game gear the nintendo game used 4 aa batteries also lasted 36 hours the sega game gear used 6 aa batteries only lasted 4 hours
That's SEYYGA. Not SEGGA.
No, that is not what GG looked like, it had much worse graphics. It was a CRT...

Im a sega kid, but I gotta say. Was never a fan of the game gear. Screen was color, but blurry. Battery life was just bad. Game line up? Non existent
Hey the game library isn't that bad, we have sonic labyrinth!
In some way a few games were better on the Game Gear than they were on Game boy. The Mortal Kombat games were at least playable whereas on Game Boy they were atrocious. Also the two Mighty Morphin Power Rangers games were good fun despite short. The only Mega Man game for it was also good despite short.
It was mainly the high framerate games (Sonic the Hedgehog being a prime example) that looked blurry: the LCD's refresh rate wasn't high enough to keep up. Games with less high speed movement, like Columns, looked fine, though.
well at least AT games did not make it
Why are you looking off to the side?
