- This is a breakdown of my Playstation Longbox Collection. I did not see someone upload the complete 102 Game collection video, so I thought that it would be an interesting subset to show. For those who enjoy to collect Playstation, this subset is doable although it is much harder now to attain. Thank you folks for the all the support. I am very consistant on my video uploads, doing two a week on Thursdays and Sundays.

I love longbox games. They may be more fragile than jewel cases but those instruction manuals are just so cool in their long form. Good work John. Now bring on part 2. Hopefully you have a few variations of good old Wipeout.

I dont have many, but I have a few long box PS1 games myself. I'm especially fond of Rayman and Jumping Flash, they're classic.
I was all depressed when he just said “Assault Rigs” and put it back on the shelf. Such an awesome game!!! Thanks for mentioning it!
If I started a PS1 collection I wouldn't be able to get these games.... My OCD would constantly be itching.

Great collection the long boxes reminded me of the long cardboard boxes that music cd's first came in... until people started complaining about the waste of paper used since they were thrown away when you opened them up.
Great stuff John! I'm nearly finished with my own PS1 longbox collection as well. I'm going for all of the individual box variants too, including case style (Jewel/Smooth Cardboard/Ridged Plastic) and cover art variants - A-Train (sticker/no sticker), King's Field, NFL GameDay (with and w/o Sony Sports Logo), NHL FaceOff (w/ and w/o Sony Sports Logo), Raiden Project (had a game disc misprint where the data on the game disc is actually Kileak DNA Imperative), Ridge Racer (retail and Not for Sale), and Tekken (w/ and w/o TRU exclusive game guide pack-in) - might be missing a few off the top of my head.
I got my first longbox ps1 game at a show recently. Bust A Move 2. It is a lot of fun and those longboxes are fun to come across. May have to work on a set.
I wanted to try to collect all of these until I found out how many there are! Maybe if I lived in the U.S.... Thanks for sharing!

Great video John! I'm not really sure if I should be happy or not that we didn't get these longboxes in Europe. I think they look cooler than the normal CD cases, but they're so fragile. But then again, the standard PAL CD cases are pretty much just as fragile. I should probably import some of the cooler titles like In The Hunt, if I come across a cheap one on eBay..
I agree with John Riggs Assault Rigs is a must have. I bought that game thinking it wasnt much of anything and wow I was wrong. That game can keep you playing for quite awhile. Also enjoyed ESPN Extreme Games too.
I've got Jumping Flash in a ridged longbox. My only one.
I've always wanted to play crazy Ivan and Assualt Riggs. I've had the demos on my PlayStation underground disc my brother got on Christmas of 95 or 96. I STILL want to play them too after all these years

Always enjoyed the ps1 longbox games, it always bugged me that they stopped packaging games in the longboxes and went with the smaller standard size cd cases, only thing good about those is that they take up alot less space haha
Agile warrior omg!!! Such a classic. I remember you could open the disc tray while the game was playing, put a cd in of your choice, and play the game to the music of your choice. How revolutionary.
Doom, NFL Gameday and Resident Evil were the only long box games i had in my small teenager bought PS1 collection.
D is pretty hard to find etc etc..says @ 4:27 "anyways, good luck with that" as he puts it back lol

Great video! I have 10 of those long box games, but my Cyberspeed disc doesn't work. I took the cardboard plastic off the disc and that ruined it. :( My prized possessions out of them are Darkstalkers and Doom. Darkstalkers is one of my favorite fighting game franchises!
It's interesting to see where the PS1 started here in US. I was just born by the time Sony switched to using jewel cases in games like Crash (one of my most nostalgic games), lol.
Funny you mentioned Battle Arena Toshinden on a demo disc. I remember going to a friend's house and playing that demo disc with Battle Arena and Loaded when his family first got a Playstation...my first exposure to Playstation and thought Toshinden looked AMAZING.

I always forget about ps1 long boxes. The last time I saw one in the wild was sometime in the mid 90s. Seeing them here is so cool.
I wanna get a few longbox games (some because I only have the discs) like Resident Evil, Jumping Flash! and King's Field. Im happy they went with standard cd cases eventually.
Resident Evil is my favorite longbox but I love Darkstalkers too. Great vid idea!
Very nice PS long box collection i have four or five long box Play Station games. I gotta find a better condition Doom copy due to stickers and sticker damage. Keep the good vids coming John!
Have Warhawk in plastic rigid long box. Had Twisted Metal also and an obscure basketball game in a cardboard longbox, but that was the 3rd time I tried a PS collection. Now I just kept Warhawk because the case is immaculate (blockbuster copy, so it just sat on a shelf). I see them going for around $35-$40 on Amazon.
I love the ridged boxes, I wish they would have kept them.

Man those long boxes are so fucking awesome. I miss my Resident Evil evil long box so much.
I didn't realize they made more Hardball games. I had the first one on my Atari XE and loved it back then. It did have a weird bug though where a player would go sliding across the whole field for no apparent reason.
I don't own any of these yet in my collection. I'm definitely going to look more in depth into this.

I'm starting collecting pretty much from scratch for everything . But PS1 is my first console I got when I was 5 . I'm gonna start grabbing these long box cases I find them cool an alot of them are pretty cheap besides the big titles like resident evil
I remember getting Loaded back in the day. Though I always thought it was strange that I had to see a guy in the alley at the side of the game store, rather than at the checkout as per usual.
What I would love to see if you have are The Black Label jewel case variants of some of these long box games.IIRC, The list is not very big. I personally have about 8 to 10 of them. The hardest most elusive, and definitely most expensive one for me to get has been Tekken. I missed out on getting that one three times on eBay!
Awesome video! PlayStation is my favorite system so I'm loving any and all of your vids on the original PlayStation. Perhaps one day you could do a longer, more in depth video covering the system and it's history. That'd be excellent.

929292matt929292 tecmo world golf was the last release. Money is my guess. Jewel cases were super cheap.

The only two longbox games I own are the mighty King's Field and Resident Evil. I'd love to get my hands on Philosoma as I love the music from Kow Otani (Shadow of the Colossus, Outlaw Star, Gundam Wing). The only problem that I have about longboxes are that the covers of both of mine are starting to peel off and I want to take some kind of glue to them, but I'm afraid it may seep through and ruin the paper. What should I do for that?
Got hi octane, gex, and cyber speed. Had em since the Christmas I got my ps1 and they were completely fased out that twar because l never even saw any on a shelf at a store.

I am still mad that my Resident Evil long box went missing. I still have the disk but I doubt I am ever gonna run across a replacement.
i loved my ps1 when i was younger, good times.
I don't think we had PAL UK long box PS1 games. (or I haven't seen any in the wild, ever) Although we did get long box Sega Saturn games, and 3DO games came in all shapes and sizes.
I've been working on long boxes since i started collecting 2.5 years ago. It's very hard to find these without going to stores and such. I never buy from stores or ebay so not sure I'll ever complete the longbox set, but so far I have about 30. Best ones I found were resident evil and street fighter the movie. I really want to get D though but i never see it. I thought disk world was a long box game though but you didn't show it here.
There is a sequel to D for the Dreamcast I think
I have a couple long boxes. I can't really dedicate a space to them, so unsure if I'll keep them in the future. I was wondering though. John, do you know why there's such differences in the boxes? Cost or time of release or ? I can't seem to find much info on it.
Were these longbox style cases exclusive to only the US market? Original PlayStation games were scarce in my country as it was a pirating heaven with shops selling modded PlayStation and pirated games to people back when the original PlayStation was relevant
love the excitement when you saw battle area :) was hoping to see that when you got to kings field. awesome game, weak on bosses and ending, but a great early exploring game with lots if secrets. vectrex and neo geo please. I only have a few long boxes, they are just too damn big.
Hi John. I have a question about the longboxes that have labels glued to the cover (smooth case type). Some of my labels are coming unglued. What would you recommend to use to fix the label back to the case? Thanks.
hey john think your channel is fantastic and your collection is unrivalled but i really feel like your channel doesn't get as much love as it deserves you should really consider putting in some gameplay of the games you're talking about i know it'll take a little longer but it would really help

@@johnhancockretro actually the sole reason for these yo exsist was to keep the angsty teen age troublemakers from doing into stores and just pocketing cases... instead you could open them in the store or just shove it under your belt or shirt. Store owners found that keeping things behind glass was a much better alternative and thus the long box fell into obscurity, plus they were more expensive to produce.
you mentioned you got these in the wild, I was wondering what years you got these. I was an early collector in relative terms I did a lot of my collecting in the late 90s and early to mid 2000. not nearly as big of collection, maybe 3k titles. im guessing you did alot of collecting before the scene was big like me.

You REALLY should be describing and showing the back of these games. There were a few which looked familiar and I needed to look them up just to know what kind of games they were. That's a fail. Most of your videos are better than this one.

Hello John. I live in Argentina I today I found a copy of Thunder Strike large box with the foam and, well, complete in box for u$11. Is it a good game and the price is right? Also and for information, original PS games in my country are extremely hard to find, since all the piracy that the PS suffer with the first and second model. Saying that, should I go running and buy it? Amazing videos! Ah, when you say 102 games, that is all of the PS games or just the ones that where made with this longbox format?

Yes, LB were a NA thing. JP and EU had jewel cases which Sony later switched over to using for NA as well.
