The entire time of the last ending I was expecting Papa to kill the original Lily. I was just waiting for that gun shot sound to break the silence. Never been full of more anxiety from a game I wasn’t even playing

I think it's a huge twist that the original lily is still alive in this game, not only that but she sent her dad a letter and asked him to stay in contact with her. For the entire story he could have reconnected with his daughter, but he's so warped by narcissism that he'd rather pretend she's gone forever and keep working on a 'perfect' obedient version of her. He can't accept her as a real, independent person who's no longer under his thumb, but all of his attempts to shape lily that way have failed, and they're in this never ending conflict. This feels like a metaphor for holding on to abusive family members and trying to make it work, but in the end you just end up trapped in the same destructive cycles, feeling the same frustrations you felt as a kid. lily's only able to set her younger self free when she burns her bridges and leaves her dad behind for good. this is such a unique take and I loved the happy ending

Manly's the type of person to hear that there's a serial killer on the loose, and go out with a shotgun, and war paint mask just to hunt the killer
I think what's interesting is that the original Lily is the complete opposite of the cloned Lilly. She's vulgar, wears punky clothing and tons of makeup, headstrong, is seemingly the disobedient type, while the cloned Lily is innocent, thoughtful, very forgiving of her cruel father, and would only think of breaking the rules to save someone's life (responded to cry in the well). I bet Papa hated the way his daughter, the original Lily, turned out. But he was so obsessed with his daughter, that he wanted to create a more "perfect" version of her, which is what he tells you in the game. His ideal Lily is one that is super innocent and would never break his rules, so he created the clones to be that way. Pure speculation of course but it would make sense right? I don't know
It's funny cuz if all he wanted was "perfection" in kindness and sweetness his lily clones have checked that mark. But bc of his obsession with control he never appreciated that hes already got the kind of daughter most will find 'perfect' in a human way

Yeah the ending was so so validating. Finally a character in a horror game who can comfort the victim WITHOUT ending up dying.

Usually there are 2 factors that lead to determining if people are family. #1 is Family though blood; Being related to someone through genes . #2 is Family through bond; Having developed a special connection to someone for how they treat you and how you feel about them and vice versa. The latter however is usually the true determining factor, while the former is more of an add-on and proof of where you came from.

Honestly, when they said, "it's ok to still love him," that made me tear up a bit. My parents were extremely neglectful of me, I had to essentially take care of myself, my younger brother, and them from a fairly young age. But despite all the abuse and emotional manipulation. There's still love there. And that's ok. I don't forgive them, but I still love them.

Dude, this game made me cry so much
My father had parents who were abusive of him too. One wrong step out of line and he was beaten for it. They didn't comfort him or say they loved him or even hugged him. He said they were monsters. But at the end of the day, he still loved them. Especially his mother. I never understood why he would love the monsters that were his parents. But after reading this comment, I believe I understand now. Thank you, you really opened my eyes.
My mom has kind of told me the same thing (she’s not abusive or anything) but her parents were not the best and didn’t always help her when she needed it so she told us that “I will always love you but that doesn’t mean I will like you”

I really like the pseudo-loop thing this game has going on. rather than being a time loop, it's more of an "experience" loop with previous actions having consequences

This is a story about rescuing your childhood self from an abusive father, isn't it. The true ending makes me really happy, what a wonderful game. Also, the MORTIS reference made me laugh out loud.

ironically, the most terrifying and anxious moments in this game are when you're closest to freedom
when you finally discover the well's secrets, when you're finally able to leave... well, anything could happen
waking back up in that bed again is ironically comforting in comparison. I dunno if it's intended, but it's an amazingly good metaphor for abuse.

I think that the narrator is actually Lily's soul, seeing as it talks about the loop's effects while Lily herself has only vague memories
The soul is the same soul, not the original Lily, because she still has hers, possibly a peice of her soul or a copy if anything? But the soul in these bodies are the same while new bodies are being made. Used with alchemy and not just science so I wouldnt call it clones.
@@CalsGirl97 alchemy was both vaguely scientific in its rigor and an occult spiritualism, so in a world where it's real and being mastered, it makes sense they'd study how to transfer souls and such.

i'd love to see takes on the narrator, they have a self-depricating humor, a sliiightly more stable memory than the Latest Lilly, and are not omniscent. i love watching people (souls? idk) think and slowly draw conclusions like the narrator does

AHHHH!!! I'm so honored you played my game!!! You're actually the only person I've seen find literally everything! I especially didn't expect you to find the trash can easter egg!
As for the Master ID, it is what allows access to the archives and the test room. You can get into Antonio's office fine without it, but based on achievement tracking, a lot of people seem to like killing Freddy Fungus. I was going to make the rest of the rooms accessible with the card, but I plan to add those optional rooms in an update.
I'm seriously happy you enjoyed the game. Even though it gets pretty grisly, it came from a big place in my heart. I hope to make more things you and everyone else enjoys in the future! :D

Amazing work! It has so much detail in it I'm not surprised it took someone as thorough as Manly to find it. This game obviously took a lot of work and the true ending honestly made me tear up a little which I wasn't expecting.

okay, he specifically told lily never to call 911, implying that what he was doing was something he could get in trouble for if discovered by law enforcement. meaning that even in the context of the game's world; antonio's actions were unethical and unacceptable. but the kicker is, he was doing it to develop a 'perfect' *OBIDIENT* daughter, which his REAL ORIGINAL daughter wasn't. he's not doing it to further any greater goal, he's not doing it as part of an experiment, or as research or anything else other than... just wanting a slave that looks like his daughter. all that time, energy, resource and manpower....wasted on one man's sadistic narcissism. antonio literally developed a method of creating life, and a potential path to immortality... AND TORTURING MURDERING AN ARMY OF CLONES OF HIS DAUGHTER IS WHAT HE SPENT IT ON? all of this and that's before mentioning the trauma he inflicted on lily... protecc tha pink hair.
I feel for bad for the clones still in tubes and all the monster-looking ones. They probably died from burning, or starvation if the scientists just ditched the place
It's implied (I think) that the dad also hunted down tons of people who could be used for Lily's body. He did say that they had the 'meat' to create more lily's and the corkboard pictures are said to make Lily feel sick.
Well, Papa may have been doing it for his own selfish goals. But he was part of a larger group where "For Science!" (or "For Alchemy!") was probably a part of it. I see it as they didn't care about his motives so long as his project furthered their research.

I loved the ending of this game! I was expecting some horrible ending where the father caught them and continued his experiments, I’m so glad it had a sweet ending where both Lily’s got away.
As the credits stated: you deserved it for playing that far
I believe those monster Lilies were the some of the first to be created. The long tube one would've been the first, as it's the least Lily like, while the more humanoid, red eyed one with pupils would be last before he perfected the cloning process.
If you pause, the creature that eats you in the forest looks like one of the Lily abominations in the 8 rope ending.
Agh! The Lily needed the hug part... It didn't say which Lilly needed the hug. Which is a nice touch!
I'm really happy it had a good ending! (And that it was the true ending.) If it didn't have a good ending, I think the only other ending would be to keep making it to the bottom of the well to show the dad that she'd never learn no matter how many times he killed her.

Probably because both of them needed a hug. We obviously know why the younger lily needs it. But I imagine Lily’s childhood was a pretty toxic and abusive environment if this is what the father is willing to do to create an obedient child.
As much as I appreciated "it's empty. like your soul", Manly could have gotten through the game without killing Freddy Fungus, but you can only find that out after making your decision.

The cycle of Lily dying and repeating traumatic events to finally get to see her future/‘real’ self really resonated with me as a survivor of trauma myself. The little details throughout mean a lot to me too.
agreed. The moment I realized she'd called "the Real Lily's" phone number -and my mind flashed back to the concern/horror OG Lily was displaying at what was happening- it instantly made me think about, like... my reaction and desperation to help those who're going through the things I did.
This reminds me of inner child healing or healing from childhood trauma 🥺 the hug at the end made me happy, I really loved this

This was something my therapist has been helping with the last couple of sessions. I wasn't abused as a child, but I am trans and repressed it for a long long time. I feel like I missed out on the childhood I should've had. Therapist told me to write a letter to my childhood self and to visualize her and just give her a hug.

Then the parents try again and again always getting the same result a child that removes themselves from the parents as soon as they can.
Yeah, the refusal to accept the child as an autonomous person with their own personality and ideas is a problem a lot of parents seem to struggle with...

Quick story recap: Antonio works as headmaster at an alchemy school that works with the demon, azoth. The secret entrance is under the well. We can assume Antonio’s mother died and he started spiraling. He tried to bring her back, but his wife caught him in the act. She then kills herself for unknown reasons, probably just because of the abuse she’s suffered at Antonio’s hands (bullwhip?) Lilly finds her and eventually runs away. Antonio, however, attempts to replicate her (the monster Lillies) and fails. Cut the loop of Lilly falling over and over. Her father allows this in the name of creating the “perfect” Lilly. The true ending is when original Lilly returns for Lilly #30. They assumedly burn down the college and stop the cycle. They then proceed to eat pancakes.
I LOVE this game, it’s so good! The story is amazing, as well! To the game creator, who is actually in the comments: PLEASE keep making games! This is amazing, and you are an extremely talented artist!
The only thing I don't fully agree with with the summary is that it seems the game implies Antonio killed Lily's mom. Both from you getting a Dead End that breaks the 4th wall when seeing the hidden painting and, in the flashback with OG Lily climbing the ladder, texts pop up that's very clearly her mom fighting with Antonio and saying she's leaving and taking their kid. Him being a narcissist/abusive can't handle the lack of control he's told is about to happen and kills her as a result, but OG Lily manages to run anyway

Sheets probably would make a decent rope if that’s all you have. I think Mythbusters did a series of prison escape myths and they tested bed sheet ropes. From what I remember, bed sheets did pretty well. I honestly don’t remember. They also did a myth where you use toothpaste and dental floss to cut threw bars

His injuries were more so the result of how Grant descended than what he used, though.

They also tried toilet paper and found that if you weave ir properly into a rope, it's possible that it can be used to climb down a building

Okay, I can just recommend to play or watch a playthrough of "I cannot drown", another game by pureiceblue, because there seem to be some interesting interconnections for Lilys Well:
SPOILERS
You can find cool things like:
- The frightening entity of the Stardust Witch, who has flesh creating abilites (which could maybe used by vile alchemists who are somehow connected to her, to create something like clones or other monstrosities), is trapped in a purgatory-version of her own memories, and supposedly is tried to be reborn into our world by her children/followers/vile alchemists
- Aunt Mifuyu and Black Bunnies
- Something that could be connected to the strange headphenomen the dad shows in 1:08:35
- Fuku and Ume
- An Ivy Witch, who doesn't seem to be a big fan of the Stardust Witch and is trapping her in the purgatory
- Lots of Base64 coded stuff
- A entity called the Pink Lady which super long pink hair, who is pretty headstrong and the manifestation of THE MEMORIES OF TRAUMA OF A CERTAIN SOUL, who was trapped in the memories of the Stardust-Witch, so that the certain soul doesn't kill herself if by chances she remembers ALL THE TRAUMA after reincarnation.
- Lots of other strange shit
It's just vague enough that you cant make any strong conclusions, but the idea that there is an overarching story is pretty cool. Would love a third game in the series!
Edit: Okay, this gives: "And yet my flesh is a part of you. How selfish of Antonio to recreate the living before the Stardust Witch." its the base64 coded sentence from lilys well in the airvent scene. Antonio somehow has a part of the flesh of the stardust witch (which they call azoth) to create clones of Lily. She is trapped in another dimension, but wants to reborn in a new body in the real world (which she states in I cannot drown). The headthingy from 1:08:35 reminds me a bit of the mentioned Ivy witch, but thats a bit of a stretch. At least the stardust witch seems to be aware that Antonio is misusing her power/body/whatever to dabble with his own cloning experiments instead of reviving her... I know it's a bit far fetched, but it just feels so connected.
Edit 2: okay, the key is the hair in the memorial. It plate says hair of mother plum in Japanese. Ume (which is plum in japanese) is the agonist of I cannot drown and in the end the stardust witch, who calls her followers children. The characteristic color of her is pitch black. The black oily stuff could be connected to her flesh/powers (which is stated as cell duplication by herself) and somehow spawns the pink, out of control replicating hair which seems to be the azoth that is used to create the clones.
okay the only bad thing i can find about this comment is "Lots of Base64 coded stuff" since it really can coincide with alot of scary and horrory games that want to be cool by forcing people to write down a b64 string by hand.

Azoth = Was considered to be a universal medication or solvent. Essentially either hoping to be or is the universal center of all medical science this organization.
Mercury symbol (female Venus symbol with horns) = In biology is used to denote an organism with male and female characteristics. The pink floor essentially contains the progenitor Lily. Gives my Elfen Lied vibes at this point in the game.

I can't see the word Azoth without Haunting Ground coming to my mind. I haven't seen the video, yet (I know it'll be a million times better than the Game Grumps version I just saw...smh😅) but I'm guessing Papa won't be trying to rip Lilly apart for it?
So long story short: this is another game where the dad hates the idea of their daughter growing up and becoming their own person so he attempts to make mental and/or physically underdeveloped but "perfect" clones that'll stay under him forever.

I like how most of the ending art is Lily dying in various horrific ways while the art used for the true ending is just the two Lilys eating pancakes like nothing happened.
The storytelling is brilliant. It's a hugely unique addition to the collection of RPG Maker titles.

Really liked this playthrough Manly. It was a really nice way to see an abusive cycle and learning to help yourself. It's also really cool art and despite being gruesome it never felt creepy or malicious about it, just somewhat honest. It was also nice to see the 'grown up' character being designed in a fashion that isn't commonly seen in these types of games. The alchemy part was a nice vessel along with whatever mommy issues Papa had. Though it is refreshing to see that all of the harmful characters are shown as surprisingly normal; the kind of people who you wouldn't assume are running a mass murder and child endangerment ring.

Agh, I loved that true ending! Seeing OG Lily caring for a younger version of herself, giving herself the love and attention that was missing from her childhood, and helping both Lily 30 and herself move on is just so freakin great!
25:34 is a randomly triggered event and if you stick around for longer in that bloody fog you will continue to hear breathing and eventually a voice will speak the following:
"As our last breaths leave our lips something new begins to enter our bodies. The flies come and begin to feed upon our rot. They then burrow into us and lay their eggs so that their children may join the feast upon their birth. When the maggots appear, they fatten up and help us return to the Earth. They make homes in our veins and meals of our skin. The maggots will always be there. They will be there if we have a funeral. They will be there if we are ever forgotten in the woods."
The weird breathing will then return and the dialogue will loop. I found this while playing through the game myself and went on a hunt online to find what was being said.

This was weirdly compelling to watch. It was... Spooky? Sad? It was a great many things, but none of them boring. In fact, I accidentally burned dinner because I was fascinated by this. Manly, your voice is very soothing, and took the edge off of some of the sudden scares that cropped up.
It was also shockingly nostalgic. Honestly gives me similar feelings to my first time watching an Undertale playthrough when I was 11.
It would be cute if Lilly becomes original Lily’s little sister and lives happily ever after 😭

I tried deciphering the "foreign" text from the game. It's Japanese, and its looks close to 母梅の髪, which roughly means "Mother Plum's Hair". That's what I think, but I don't really know for sure, because I am only starting to study the language, but it feels good to me to be able to recognize some of it!

That's correct. I think it's supposed to read as "Mama Ume's Hair" as 梅 can be a name and 母 by itself is informal. (as opposed to the standard お母さん) However, Japanese doesn't generally conjugate like that, so 母梅 looks like a name. As far as I can find, 母 isn't used in names. (I spent a very long time trying to make sense of it as a name...)

Would love secret endings for trying to call 911 over and over (Lilly's determination breaking through to reveal secret lore or the police coming, seeing nothing wrong, then dad coming home and killing everyone), calling with a death count of 0 after deleting save, calling with a count of 69 for a Silent Hill style alien ending.
Man, this was really good. The idea of a loop-except-persistent game is always really cool to me, but the amount of TLC and effort that it feels like was put in is captivating: the way the idea of it being a continuous game instead of just loading files slowly creeps up on you is great (especially with features that seem like conveniences until it starts to add up), but it doesn't drag on, either, confirming that's what's happening as soon as you start to think you've got it figured out. I appreciate that it was an actual mid-story plot mechanic rather than a twist ending, too, it felt like the game really explored its ideas to the fullest where others might just drop the idea and leave. I also feel like it took some good creativity to make your actions persistent without having a bunch of obvious holes, too, like how you can feed the monster repeatedly for a purpose, how they managed to come up with a way to make the final lab scene loop while still feeling organic, making puzzles that make sense to stay solved, etc. Also a small thing but I really like how much it used the text box jump cut whenever something surprising happened. Not to mention the - sometimes cute and really well-made but - gruesome CGs, genuinely off-putting but in a good way.
Maybe I'm weird for gushing so much about a game I didn't even play, but really, I love how well done it seemed. Honestly might have to go and buy it myself just to show support.

Og Lily gets mad because she doesn't recognize Lily. All while Lily doesn't know why she called in the first place.
This was actually an amazing game. So many details and such a pretty good storyline put together. The way it also holds onto progression so you dont have to undergo so many tedious details! It might not be "A cat in the Box" but it was just as haunting. Maybe even a bittersweet ending.
Honestly after so many bummer endings, it's really refreshing to get a happy ending. There's only so many bummers you can handle before you just get depressed, this was really nice and made me love the game more.

It depends on her age, I guess. She still looks sort of young so I guess the original Lily is more likely to treat her and introduce her as her younger sister than as her daughter, but it may just be me
Reminds me of a game called Clock Tower: first fear. Another point and click horror game from the Snes era.
If you don't gather the right items or investigate first before you do the common sense solution and just leave (or at this case climb down the well) you get a "dead end." Because theres are hidden psychos after you, with hidden dangers, and hidden choices.
Clock Tower series is one of my favorites! Honestly, just the sound of scissors snip-snapping, Bobby's theme that played whenever he's chasing Jennifer, or the theme song brought anxiety to me when I played it so many moons ago. Nowadays I play it whenever I'm bored or I'll watch youtubers' let's play for the nostalgia of being scared sh*tless back then 😄

if you collect all the ropes, it plays the "your rope is creaking, something is very wrong" end; if you call the number before you "learn" it, original Lily complains about the hour, won't let you speak and hangs up on you, the new version Lily says she probably shouldn't call again and disables the interaction until you die; I tried picking Mandragoras up but I couldn't find any

This whole game reminds me of a movie where this man kills wife or clones of his wife every time they discover her clones. It's at that point where he derive sick pleasure from doing so. I can infer that this dude is pretty much the same but what I don't understand is why he needed to clone his daughter if the original one is still alive, I guess they became estranged and he craves the "perfect" father daughter relationship but to go through a whole army of clones is just absurd

Elizabeth Harvest! I watched that with my boyfriend once and I was thinkimg the same thing while watching this.
He seemed to think raising Lily from scratch again would make her turn out obedient, so she would never leave him, unlike the real Lily. At one point the game said something about him loving the memory of Lily, not the actual Lily. That certainly seemed to be the case. What he really wanted was a Lily that would do anything he said without question, so his real daughter might have paled in comparison to the idea of making a "perfect" Lily.
That was gripping from the beginning to the end. Truly macabre but great game, what a good watch.
While I get the main gist of the story, there a still some plotpoints who are quite mysterious to me...

- Who is the Aunt Mifuyu?
- Who is the Women mentioned in the Attic Scene by Lilys Mom? The Mother of the Dad? The Woman in the Painting before the Glitch? Is that connected to "I cannot drown" somehow? Is that maybe the Stardust Witch?
- On the Grave is a japanese Inscription who mentions something with Ume. Ume is the agonist of the former game I cannot drown... Connections?
- Did Lilys Mother kill herself or was she suicided by the dad?
- Was the father dabbling in cloning before he tried to make an obedient Lily? Who is he trying recreate like mentioned in the attic Scene?
- Who is Vic and whats the mothers speciality? Is she influencing the Dad?
There seems to be a bit more going then shown. What a great game.
"Death Collector" is a really good name for this genre. This game is like Outer Wilds but the horror is occult rather than cosmic.
Bonus note: the text that flashes for an instant after the fatal error message but before the game freezes says “NO WAIT I WANT TO REMEMBER”
Manly's reaction to the "Empty. Like your soul." is just fantastic.

I hate horror games- I'm a huge coward with this sorta stuff. But I'm glad I gave this one a shot. Story was very well written, IMO. It felt naturally horrific, and... I dunno.
I'm so glad it ended the way it did though. That Lily comes back to save the clone, and help her escape everything.
Honestly I started to cry when Lily said she died thirty times. Seeing her cry on the phone like that... It hurt! But in the good way? Like... Yes, you HAVE suffered- But it's over now! And you NEVER have to experience it again.
...I dunno. I guess I just wanna say well done developer. I really value good storytelling and you've created a terrifying scenario without leaving me scared to sleep at night, because in the end, I know Lily's gonna be okay. :)
So, papa had the screams of the First Lily recorded for more experimentation.
The hair issues came from the cloning, and the hair was there from the start of the game, implying she had been killed before (she had normal hair in flashback) and is still being tested on to make her Perfect.
Most likely explains the character of Papa pretty well.
If anyone was confused on how the attic event happened when manly was in a office the red floating text said there is a ladder in the pantry
