i find it funnier to think that the puppets don't actually hurt gordon when they grab him for hugs. it's just that gordon is so allergic to any sort of positivity and affection that the psychic damage causes him to hurt himself on the floor lmfao
I do hope someday the devs release a transcript of all the random stuff the non-character muppets say cus there's a LOT of weird stuff they'll talk about
A lot of the dialogue from the muppets sounds like they're recounting what they saw/did during the war in a very morbidly happy way. Could be some weird plot by the founders to brainwash the younger generation into seeing the things they did in the war as acceptable.

I like that this game uses actually friendly looking and sounding muppets. Many games in the mascot horror genre try to convince you, that the mascot is a friendly character beloved by children when it's clearly a nightmarish being with a demonic voice. Here it's possible to believe that. In fact it even adds another layer, where I'd feel bad about hurting the muppets. The first time I heard Norman say "Owie!" I actually had the urge to give him a hug. I'm also pretty sure that this mindset is going to kill me at some point.
Yeah, I appreciate that the characters aren't nightmare fuel and at least somewhat act like they did when their show was running rather than axe crazy psychopaths with nightmare inducing forms. I know that won't last by the next part of the playthrough, but I appreciate that the creators took a different approach to mascot horror.
well tbf most of the time it's like decades after they were icons for children, they're supposed to be all corrupted and broken down. A Barney costume isn't scary new, but you leave that thing in a dingy closet for a few decades and it'll look pretty creepy

The constant chatter from even taped up puppets just strikes my funny bone. Also that was a really cool last section of this part, I really hope this game does go that direction where the main guy shares morals and lessons and kinda relates his own problems to them, the notes make it sound like the studio just couldn't get the morals right, either too extreme, or just too sappy and not really relatable or applicable, or just warped. If the main guy gives them a "Real" experience to reflect on, rather than a scripted one that seems to have not done them much good.
The chatter manages to be both unsettling and hilarious at the same time; like the puppets are definitely not in a good mental state and are likely dangerous to you and themselves, which their constant talking makes clear, but said chatter is still morbidly goofy. Especially when the puppets are taped and can't hurt anyone.
It's the way that this actually became a super competent game in its genre but with a muppet twist, really good voice acting, and has been getting good reviews all around that took me by surprise - I know that there's been a bit of a mini burnout for everyone with mascot horror these days, but the game itself has been received really well
Yeah, it doesn’t feel very cookie cutter. Sure there’s similar aspects to other games, but it really feels like it’s carved out it’s own space rather than be a clone of something else, another “flavor” available for a template. It’s neat
It's because it's not meant to be mascot horror. It's not some lazily hashed out nonsense that is supposed to sucker stupid kids into buying merch, the dev specifically said they made it a survival horror first (gameplay wise) and the muppet aesthetic on top of it is just supposed to make the whole thing feel absurdist and humorous.
@@youtube-kit9450 it was also in dev and posting videos BEFORE poppy playtime/etc came around, FNAF would have really been the only real "mascot horror" when they showed the first videos of this.
My theory is that after the trauma of war, people got cynical and abandoned the puppets and their message of kindness and love. Left to themselves, the puppets got bitter. They display ticks like caged animals in zoos that don't provide enough enrichment, they need to interact with people to be okay. Maybe their plan is to somehow destroy the adults and take over the education of children as "we can teach them" (which is why they're attacking Gordon, he's an adult and therefore unreedemable in their muppety eyes). Gordon, despite being a rude grump, still can display kindness and empathy for the neighbours, giving them back the things they lost or talking to them. He's kind, under a layer of cynisism. So maybe the muppets start realising there's still good people out there, and Gordon gets some healing from his time during the war. Maybe helping everyone gets you a peaceful cohabitation ending?
That would have been a better story than the one we got, where Ricky is the main villain and blinded by his thirst to be famous again, created the unfriendly neighborhood to be popular and get his revenge. Also, have the studio people be responsible for corrupting the puppets, that was an idea I liked in the demo before it got cut out and have more human characters in the game, where some get killed or transform into body horror puppets. In the end, Gordon works together with the puppet bosses he befriended (there would be some puppet bosses he killed because he couldn’t reason with them or he just didn’t have the chance to bond with) to exterminate the evil remaining puppets and kill Ricky and destroy the unfriendly neighborhood and the mfn tower along with it. In the epilogue, Gordon, the surviving human studio workers who were trapped in the studios too, and the surviving puppet bosses form a new tv show and bring back hope to the city, while exposing the corrupt politicians and powers that be that were responsible for the puppets’ corruption and the war itself. I feel the game was a little underwhelming and could have done more with a bigger cast, budget, and if it actually was a horror game that was Sesame Street but combined with bioshock and resident evil.
@@liamerolduffy7738 that's a very fine concept but you are asking for a completely different game there haha. the message of the game is wonderfully counterculture by having the puppets actually hold no ill will toward humans, even if gordon just like the rest of the world wants to believe they're harmful.
It’s cool to see how they finished the game and changed the demo area slightly so it’s fresh enough for people that might have played it relatively close to the launch
I don't know why, but I kind of like that they're all so chatty. It's kind of an amusing change of horror games usually being so silent, or the 'evil mascots' just do nothing but growl and cry out with the souls of the damned. These puppet pals though are just vibin.
You did somewhat "help" Pearl, the giant bird. But the cutscene still isn't activated like you did with Goblette (Green giant frog gal) in the theater. Walk up to the mirror and the cutscene should activate for Pearl. But yeah you can help Ray and a few other mascots later in the game.
I remember seeing various RUclipsrs some time back play the demo, so it’s amazing to see the full game released! The game has a unique charm to it while keeping it unique to the genre horror~
i was pleasantly surprised by how much heart and personality this game has- gordon feels like a real person (and one i keep picturing as bob hoskins from the live action mario movie) not just a player stand-in character, the puppets don't feel pointlessly malevolent (it really and truly just feels like they're so desperately lonely they've lost all sense of what's appropriate, but don't see the harm in what they're doing), and the theme of the war and the way it's implied to have disillusioned people, to have spelled the end for My Friendly Neighborhood because the world felt so much grimmer in the aftermath of atrocity... i guess all the puppet horror stuff we've been seeing lately has been pretty surface level or "possessed by evil" that i wasn't expecting this game to feel like it's turning out to have a surprisingly poignant message about loss of cultural innocence in the wake of what is functionally the not-vietnam war
I love how they give you a melee weapon but make it so that enemies can't be hit at close quarters reliably without stunning them first. Prevents you from getting softlocked by running out of ammo while still making the ranged attack the most viable option.
For anyone wondering, the dev has said The Coffin of Andy and Leyley is a little over halfway done. This was about a month ago. Also there will be four main endings, which doesn’t include “you died” type stuff.
Gotta love the concerningly strange implications brought up in the fringe details, like how the employees refer to the puppets and what the puppets say.
41:28... Im glad he still randomly multiplies. I Manly mentioned it too, I get some strong RE remake vibes from this - the idea of backtracking and using ammo to clear out areas with frequent zombie spawns or the crimson heads. This game has a lot of good inspiration from early horror, like Bioshock of course. It's amazing how much they added onto this, and how its like the devs really enjoyed making a horror-inspired game, but its more about the puzzles and the hockyness of the genre rather than suspense.
I love this approach to the mascot horror craze focusing more on the story and having genuinely heart felt moments where you can relate both to gordon and the puppets
Another change from the demo to main game ive noticed is ray’s script being changed to something that makes a lot more sense, in this version ray got insulting and stopped doing the plumbing work which caused everything to flood, in the demo the reason everything was clogged was because people were flushing their bills and taxes (yes, im for real) down the toilet. I really love these little changes in the script because it makes a lot more sense for a kids show to be talkingg about not hurting others feelings then about taxes.
Nearly 90 minutes of straight bangers, I'm really immersed in the atmosphere created by the juxtaposition between Vietnam-era gildings and Jim Henson-style puppetry.
I like that the puppets are standing around gibbering like lunatics rather than stalking the player like monsters. It really sells the setting of a deranged kids show.
I love the attention to detail in this. From the mountain of idle dialogue, to the big bird thing just vibing and acting like a bird, I can already tell a lot of love went into making this
I like that the game doesn't try to make the muppets any more scarier than muppets already are (surprise, not everybody regards them with positive nostalgia lol), the scare factor is that they are alive and a bit deranged but it's not horribly over the top. Also the dialogue in this game is just top notch. Well, Gordon does sometimes go into the "protagonist saying dumb one liners" category but since its a comedic horror game I can let it slide since it's not taking itself too seriously. And I love that it's basically Resident Evil but with puppets.
Speaking of muppety characters, I'd love to see Manly play Smile For Me. It's not strictly a horror game but I feel like it'd be great to see him do. You've got heavily stylized characters, literally a puppet in the intro, creepy elements, multiple endings, the works.
Okay I just followed your instructions. Someone is banging on my front door and screaming unintelligibly. They don’t sound like any of my neighbours. They don’t sound human at all. I assume this means my neighbours are all sound asleep. Good advice! ☺️

That thing with one of the puppets splitting into multiple of the same puppet when taking damage? I'm almost CERTAIN that was a bug that happened during development, and then the guy making it decided "I'm gonna make that a FEATURE." I might be misremembering, though.
This game seems like weird mishmash of BATIM, Resident Evil, & Who Framed Roger Rabbit. 🤨 16:03 "The Shadow Sapphire"? I freakin' saw that! I'm loving all these Jim Henson parody/Easter eggs.
Watching to decide if this game is a worth buying and it's a really good showing. The Resident Evil influences are plain to see and the manic blabbering is a welcome change to the quiet shock-horror from other titles. But the floppy stun animation really sold it for me. It's so weird and original and sells the idea of the puppets. But it also makes follow up shots difficult while opening them up to a wrench attack. That's textbook dynamic gameplay but I'm a sucker for games that go beyond head-clicking-sim.
i like how this game is like a sensory overload by many sounds of muppets and manly sounds like a war refugee ex-soldier or smth guy in the middle of a children show

I love how Ricky acts sarcastic when Gordon doesn't care about the bs spewing out of Ricky's mouth, only about finishing the job so he can go home for the day. Everything about this was thoroughly entertaining to watch.
The animations in the cutscenes are so mesmerisingly on-point. Like, I can genuinely imagine how the rigging for them would work as actual puppets. Top-quality "Takes up half the set behind this convenient wall" Jim Henson stuff.

If I walk into a building and find a talking sock puppet with no arm, i'm calling my boss to ask about the job. I'm not going further into the building.
I love Ricky, they did a fantastic job with that character, its so incredibly well done and proper to the times. I'm really impressed on that sole detail alone, everything else is great, but Ricky really carried the game, I was actually looking forward to each time the character interacts with him.
The health levels should've been "Alright", "Bruised", "Caution" and "Danger". The fact they do it for the last two but not full health seems like a missed opportunity.
Hey, was unsure where to put this but wanted to recommend Saturnalia! Its a survival horror set in Italy drawing inspiration from local folklore and Giallo horror films. Its got some interesting rogulite elements but I think they can be adjusted, either way the story and presentation are fantastic and definitely worth a look!
This turned into a long involved game...pretty fun. I had to chuckle ad you complained about inventory space as you conserved every possible letter for ammo even though you had literal hundreds haha...
Ive noticed that the muppets, the neighbors, all talk about things ranging from uncomfortably self destructive to outright psychoticly violent. This talk of the war, i have a feeling that it has somehow influenced the neighbors and twisted their perception of what is good. In a children's show, being a good person means sharing sugar and flour, engaging the community, having a virtuous character, or as best as one can have. In a hot war, especially one reminiscent of Nam, though, being a good person means jumping onto landmines, killing enemy forces, mowing down foreign civilians, using guerilla tactics, sacrificing for your country unquestioningly and to your own unrewarded detriment. The intro says the children's show is broadcasting over the news. What if it wasnt one way, and the puppets became more disillusioned, or worse, delusional towards their child friendly world, where they became more and more exposed to the violent war, resulting in these seemingly schizophrenic puppets insisting on teaching "them." Are they teaching children how to behave, or are they teaching the trees not to speak Vietnamese? Is it both? What if the negative reception to the warriors coming home, and the poor reception of the slowly derailing show, became a downwards spiral, where the more worse news came in, the worse the show did, and the worse the puppets deteriorated?
man i still remember the demo and how you wend out of bounds for the models we been waiting for this game and where best to see it than with the big man himself
Been looking forward to the Manly playthrough of this one! And gasp, is that the marker of a multi-part longplay I see? This is indeed a blessed morning!

Me, an over-analyzer who was somehow able and willing to pick out symbolism and a nice message from a funny puppet game (I have too much time on my hands): I DEFY YOU CIRCLEMAN!
I love the atmosphere and vibe of this game so much. They've pretty much nailed the Muppet parody and put a legit weird twist on it. I'm not sure about the whole Vietnam war thing, but hopefully it doesn't throw off the vibe or go too into the weeds with it.

*Manly pummeling the bird with a wrench*
Also Manly: Bird what are you sad about?
"Imma go fight some puppets"
"God damn, elmo got hands"
You did somewhat "help" Pearl, the giant bird. But the cutscene still isn't activated like you did with Goblette (Green giant frog gal) in the theater. Walk up to the mirror and the cutscene should activate for Pearl. But yeah you can help Ray and a few other mascots later in the game.
I remember seeing various RUclipsrs some time back play the demo, so it’s amazing to see the full game released! The game has a unique charm to it while keeping it unique to the genre horror~
When he had under a million subs he played the demo version, It was fun seeing his channel grow.
IKR? Of all the insanity, the rolodex business card [but they're alphabet letters] shooting gun cracks me up the most.
@@macrograms shame he privated one of the videos of the demo.
For real, this is one of those rare games for me that instantly triggered the "I gotta play this myself" response. Very interesting world design.
@@Lucas-iSL same to bad I am poor
22:41 That "Educate the children" line and attack as soon as manly rounded the corner really got me. this game is legitimately funny.
Definitely worth destroying my sleep schedule to watch this glorious content the moment it releases
Agreed
i was pleasantly surprised by how much heart and personality this game has- gordon feels like a real person (and one i keep picturing as bob hoskins from the live action mario movie) not just a player stand-in character, the puppets don't feel pointlessly malevolent (it really and truly just feels like they're so desperately lonely they've lost all sense of what's appropriate, but don't see the harm in what they're doing), and the theme of the war and the way it's implied to have disillusioned people, to have spelled the end for My Friendly Neighborhood because the world felt so much grimmer in the aftermath of atrocity... i guess all the puppet horror stuff we've been seeing lately has been pretty surface level or "possessed by evil" that i wasn't expecting this game to feel like it's turning out to have a surprisingly poignant message about loss of cultural innocence in the wake of what is functionally the not-vietnam war
Also there will be four main endings, which doesn’t include “you died” type stuff.
wait the one manly played was a demo..????
@@zandiek effectively yes, since the full one is going to be a direct continuation of the events we’ve already seen.
NO WAY
@@ryanrouse5590that’s awesome!
@@ryanrouse5590 So this is basically a prequel before the real game?
Gotta love the concerningly strange implications brought up in the fringe details, like how the employees refer to the puppets and what the puppets say.
41:28... Im glad he still randomly multiplies. I
Manly mentioned it too, I get some strong RE remake vibes from this - the idea of backtracking and using ammo to clear out areas with frequent zombie spawns or the crimson heads. This game has a lot of good inspiration from early horror, like Bioshock of course. It's amazing how much they added onto this, and how its like the devs really enjoyed making a horror-inspired game, but its more about the puzzles and the hockyness of the genre rather than suspense.
The fact that bioshock can now be considered 'early horror' aged me about 10 years...
To be fair it is a cancelled kids show, confusing plots could've been a part of it
Well of course the hug box is large, don't you know that the arms are the longest part of a puppet?
Dumb excuse for poor enemy hit box. The fact that you can be grabbed while the enemy is turned around proves that further
When I read "hug box" I thought of the slaughterhouse equipment 😂
@@sainttrish7544well, they are shaking a lot back and forth which lets them see from behind so kinda no wonder they can do that
Never thought I wanted to see what a Bioshock version of a mascot horror game would look like, but here we are.
To spoil it; no they do make the puppets more deranged later on.
I love how Gordon enters a realm of murderous Muppets, with absolutely nothing blocking his way out, but he doesn't leave at all. 😅
Hellllll, yes! Been a minute since we had a multi-episode series from you. I can’t wait!
As someone named Gordon, I can appreciate the taste in names that sock puppet has
I Like Gordon, looks like a good protagonist for a "happy" game like this one
_Nice to see this game again_
I remember this from a year ago or so - great frenetic energy, good music, and duct tape. Looking forward to next part!
Same! :D
Speaking of muppety characters, I'd love to see Manly play Smile For Me. It's not strictly a horror game but I feel like it'd be great to see him do. You've got heavily stylized characters, literally a puppet in the intro, creepy elements, multiple endings, the works.

That thing with one of the puppets splitting into multiple of the same puppet when taking damage? I'm almost CERTAIN that was a bug that happened during development, and then the guy making it decided "I'm gonna make that a FEATURE."
I might be misremembering, though.
You're right! Ascended glitches are fun.

THE FLUTE SALAD WILL CONTINUE UNTIL MORALE IMPROVES
Manly never lets me down when it comes to games I wanna see him play
As someone who used to watch some of Sesame Street, they really nailed that muppet feel in a horror setting
I love the little mice guys, they’re adorable and sound like a whiteboard squeak
The enemies talking to themselves gives me so many good Bioshock memories. The devs of this game are doing such a good work with this.
This game seems like weird mishmash of BATIM, Resident Evil, & Who Framed Roger Rabbit. 🤨
16:03 "The Shadow Sapphire"? I freakin' saw that! I'm loving all these Jim Henson parody/Easter eggs.
Watching to decide if this game is a worth buying and it's a really good showing. The Resident Evil influences are plain to see and the manic blabbering is a welcome change to the quiet shock-horror from other titles.
But the floppy stun animation really sold it for me. It's so weird and original and sells the idea of the puppets. But it also makes follow up shots difficult while opening them up to a wrench attack. That's textbook dynamic gameplay but I'm a sucker for games that go beyond head-clicking-sim.
i like how this game is like a sensory overload by many sounds of muppets and manly sounds like a war refugee ex-soldier or smth guy in the middle of a children show
7:43 OH MY GOD THAT ARM. THAT’S SCARIER THAN THE ENTIRE DEMO.
you mean game, this is the full version not the demo
@@thecaretaker9571 no, I meant that the entire demo of this game is less scary that that one part of the full game.
I love how Gorden is consistantly more annoyed by all of this than surprised.
Its so cool to hear Arlo as Ricky, i really love it!
It is Arlo right!? I thought it sounded way too close to not be him.

I'm surprised he didn't end up approaching Pearl at her mirror after giving them the glasses in this session
Watching both Manly and Jello play this is fun as it provides different contexts given Jello was the voice director for this game
I love how they incorporate references in this, the Resident Evil manor and the Welcome Home Tshirt were some of my favorites😊
Those little muppet mice are really cute. They just squeak and bounce. Looking forward to seeing the rest of the game, Manly. As a 30's mom, it reminds me of Sesame Street and The Dark Crystal and all those movies from back then. A bit nostalgic.
I love how Ricky acts sarcastic when Gordon doesn't care about the bs spewing out of Ricky's mouth, only about finishing the job so he can go home for the day. Everything about this was thoroughly entertaining to watch.
"*UNRELAAATED,* howdoyafeel about blunt-force head trauma?~" easily one of the lines of all time
The animations in the cutscenes are so mesmerisingly on-point. Like, I can genuinely imagine how the rigging for them would work as actual puppets. Top-quality "Takes up half the set behind this convenient wall" Jim Henson stuff.

Fun fact
41:28 is based on a glitch the developper ran into while developping the game
I love Ricky, they did a fantastic job with that character, its so incredibly well done and proper to the times.
I'm really impressed on that sole detail alone, everything else is great, but Ricky really carried the game, I was actually looking forward to each time the character interacts with him.
Ricky is actually voiced by Arlo, somebody already used to voicing puppets.
Hot damn, this has probably been the earliest I've ever been to a video! Can't wait, I loved the demo of this game.
I'ts been noted that the enemy puppets really aren't trying to hurt you, they want to hug you... very aggresively.
*waves fleece fabric arms in the air* -YAY a manly video YAY!!
The health levels should've been "Alright", "Bruised", "Caution" and "Danger". The fact they do it for the last two but not full health seems like a missed opportunity.
We need to respect how dedicated the protagonist is to their job
One of the few games I want to play myself after watching someone play to listen to all the various characters/lines.
The animation and voice acting for Ricky is amazing.
Yeah he's voiced by a RUclipsr called arlo actually

Hey, was unsure where to put this but wanted to recommend Saturnalia! Its a survival horror set in Italy drawing inspiration from local folklore and Giallo horror films. Its got some interesting rogulite elements but I think they can be adjusted, either way the story and presentation are fantastic and definitely worth a look!
This turned into a long involved game...pretty fun. I had to chuckle ad you complained about inventory space as you conserved every possible letter for ammo even though you had literal hundreds haha...

"Step on me, puppet." -My last braincell seeing that title.
it's out now?! great! this has been one i wanted to see more of! it's ludicrous, hilarious, and I want more already.
19:47 Genuinely made me jump. Also it’s cool seeing this game finally get released! I almost forgot that Manly played the demo.
