@@elliotsanderson392 according to wikipedia it's a 'colour encoding system for analogue television' :3 But basically here it refers to the version of NES Tetris programmed for pal NES consoles with a framerate of 50hz (to match 50hz pal TVs) compared to the NTSC NES at 60hz. With that change in framerate it is much harder to get a maxout because starting level 19 pieces fall at a speed of 1 frame / cell (the board in a 20x10 grid) compared to 2 frames for NTSC (levels 19->28 and then 1f from 29 on...).
@@elliotsanderson392 The other guy didn’t answer this but it stands for Phase Alternating Line. The reason for the name, which I shamelessly pulled from Wikipedia, is kinda dense and might leave you with more questions than answers: “The name ‘Phase Alternating Line’ describes the way that the phase of part of the colour information on the video signal is reversed with each line, which automatically corrects phase errors in the transmission of the signal by cancelling them out, at the expense of vertical frame colour resolution. Lines where the colour phase is reversed compared to NTSC are often called PAL or phase-alternation lines, which justifies one of the expansions of the acronym, while the other lines are called NTSC lines.” On the other hand, NTSC is just named after the committee that established it - the National Television Standards Committee
