- "To clear up confusion: This was played on console with controller, at no point did I use flyhec/rolling on controller to try to have an advantage over anyone else playing with keyboard..."
I don't know how long people have been trying for a maxout in PAL Tetris, but it's finally happened! Really amazing game all around, and that was my first day with a real cartridge!
I have so many people to thank for this.
Jani for mastering the game early on and drawing many new players to it,
Jake for inspiring many others to try the game out (even though the game eventually turned out to be fake),
Adam for pushing the limits of PAL DAS,
Sam Finch for paying for my cartridge,
and many others, who provided inspiration and support.
New World Records:
PAL Score (824,020 → 1,096,300)
PAL Lines (341 → 400)
PAL Level (40 → 46)
PAL Post-Transition (493,300 → 565,380)
The intro tune was some thing I made in garageband in like ten minutes, and the music throughout the game was a Scott Joplin playlist ( • Scott Joplin - Best Of... ).

Congratulations! Thank you for naming the game after me, it means a lot
Yeah, I thought that was a really respectful nod from Eric.
I love how everyone in chat just slowly realizes that this is the run and starts to freak out
No way. Well, we know this has to happen sooner or later, but with that huge margin of WR, I thought we will have to wait at least a whole year to see something like this, and by the man who a few moments ago didn’t even had the cartridge. Simply amazing
I like how you got the the max then kept playing going “now what?”
Considering his history of going past the kill screen doing anything else would be disappointing.
Congrats Eric! I was sure this would happen! Also great to see that you already had the game genie code in. The start of the description and the smashed records that appear during the video are also amazing ideas (btw, the overall lines WR was 371 from 19 start).
"Cheatertaps" (faster than DAS+quicktap):
- 5 high left longbar at 6:01
- 6 high left J at 6:59
- 5 high left J at 9:23
- 5 high left S at 9:29
... and some more 3-high, 4-high 5-taps and 7-high + 8-high 4 taps. I am not listing them to say anything bad about your stacking, but just to show how much of an advantage a hypertapper can have over a DAS player and that I always believed that a tapper would have much bigger chances to achieve such a thing. Also it shows your ability to recover from painful misdrops that would instantly kill almost any other player. I am pretty sure this record will stand for a very long time unless you will try to beat it.
yes poet
!pb poet13
are cheatertaps just regular hypertapping or something new i’m not aware of?
regular tapping but faster than frame perfect das so cheats yepbear
Just wait until Rolling.
Remember when lots of people were saying that it is impossible to max out on PAL using console? This is why do not ever say that something is impossible to be done. This is a living proof that even the things that seem impossible is actually possible.
Dang finally a pal max ! Congratulations !
What does pal stand for
@@elliotsanderson392 according to wikipedia it's a 'colour encoding system for analogue television' :3
But basically here it refers to the version of NES Tetris programmed for pal NES consoles with a framerate of 50hz (to match 50hz pal TVs) compared to the NTSC NES at 60hz.
With that change in framerate it is much harder to get a maxout because starting level 19 pieces fall at a speed of 1 frame / cell (the board in a 20x10 grid) compared to 2 frames for NTSC (levels 19->28 and then 1f from 29 on...).
@@elliotsanderson392 The other guy didn’t answer this but it stands for Phase Alternating Line. The reason for the name, which I shamelessly pulled from Wikipedia, is kinda dense and might leave you with more questions than answers: “The name ‘Phase Alternating Line’ describes the way that the phase of part of the colour information on the video signal is reversed with each line, which automatically corrects phase errors in the transmission of the signal by cancelling them out, at the expense of vertical frame colour resolution. Lines where the colour phase is reversed compared to NTSC are often called PAL or phase-alternation lines, which justifies one of the expansions of the acronym, while the other lines are called NTSC lines.”
On the other hand, NTSC is just named after the committee that established it - the National Television Standards Committee
A real landmark performance - truly astonishing. Congrats!
Extra kudos for doing this to a Scott Joplin soundtrack!
This is why we should've never let touhou players play tetris. ggs
And ragtime to boot! Haven't heard that in a long time...
Well done!
who would've thought that reimu the broke ass shrine maiden plays tetris at a professional level
wtf is this comment
Congrats Eric! Absolutely amazing
seeing this on stream was the most insane thing ever. GG on the wr(s)! Absolutely insane
Congrats! That's quite a historical achievement!
This is mind blowing! Congratulations Eric!
6:14 a_massive_zebra: Only 470K post needed for a maxout Kappa.
Little did he know...
Excellent work, even with the number of burns you did it turned out really well
Eric, respect and congratulations from Poland
“At no point did I use flyhec/rolling on controller”
Well you already tap fast enough lol but still good game! You can truly get 1.2 if you grind harder for pre-trans score XD
Oh my God...400 friggin' lines! Joseph Saelee and Dogplaystetris better be shaking in their boots! 🤣
Also...was this done on an NTSC console?! The sounds are definitely different than what I'm accustomed to for PAL. If it was done on an NTSC console (that's been modded to circumvent region-locking), this would be an even more epic feat.
@@psychotheunsane7285 it was done on a retron HD which has a pal switch, and I think Eric recently got a pal cart to go with it
@@benjaminpalmer6248 That still counts as a real console, and therefore this record is legit, no cap. This is a serious blow to those who said it was humanly impossible for anyone to max out on PAL Tetris...among those being Jani Herlevi himself, who even had the audacity to tell me to "go to hell" when I told him I thought it was possible to max out on PAL Tetris.
@@psychotheunsane7285 yeah I wasn't trying yo say it was fake, completely agree, sorry for confusion
Epic game and great music pick, love Scott Joplin's ragtimes.
Congrats mate, was great watchin this live
INSANE!! Congrats Eric 🔥
Funny how getting a higher score in pal is now easier than in ntsc
reading the description, i feel obligated to say that rolling is technically possible on keyboard, but it requires both hands (lightly position one finger on a key, rake it with the other hand's 4 fingers, tap a 5th time by flexing the main finger with proper timing). it might still be possible to control the remaining inputs with free thumbs and/or feet.
bro was a genius
And I was wondering why Adam put "former" tag to his WR video xD.
New challenge for you
- overcome Jake's disputed PAL score of 1.25 M
- overcome Adam's PAL 19-start WR 377 lines and 677k points (or how much it was, dont remember it)
Prediction: The pal wr will become higher than the ntsc one
made that prediction like a year ago lol, it’s all coming together
Ehhh idk about that one
Gunny Sim, your prophecy has come to realization. Well done
damn no way u were right
Update:
Wr trades
NTSC WR 1.676 mil
PAL WR 2.1 mil
NTSC WR 2.43 mil
PAL WR 2.8 mil
PAL WR 4.3 mil
PAL WR 4.888 mil
NTSC WR 6.492 mil
Always thought that this will happen!
With the level of skill reached on NTSC killscreen a PAL maxout was knly waiting to be made.
I also think that if more players get into this, we'll soon see a PAL WR being higher than the NTSC one
How amazing!Looks like Eric can play endlessly
Good job buddy! Watched it at least 10 times, very impressive, hope more people could appreciate it
Congrats Eric. I was sure you’d get one of these eventually. Also, can someone fill me in-did Jake admit his PAL max is fake? I know Jake’s been accused of it being fake before, but I didn’t know it was definitely known to be fake. Did Jake admit it, did people discover something incriminating that makes it obvious it’s fake, or is it just Eric’s opinion?
Jake admitted it was fake after he was confronted about it in the CTM discord
@@santeritaimi6843 Not too surprised honestly. His NTSC 29 didn’t really seem good enough to be able to play PAL 19 sustainably for that many lines. Kind of makes me wonder what else is fake. Like his 1.356 NTSC game from a long time ago that he still hasn’t matched.
It’s just so weird that he would cheat because he was a top 10 (maybe even top 5) player for a while.
@@IRNjuggle28 yeah that game was also fake, basically anything he claimed without video proof was fake
@@IRNjuggle28 He's a 14 year old kid who derives a huge amount of self worth from his standing in a very niche community. That he would lie to enhance this standing shouldn't be weird to anyone.
@@b.t.8879 True, it's very often the top players that cheat because they feel entitled to be on top. They put so, so much effort in it. In my opinion it's no desaster for a 14 years old to cheat, as long as they confess later - I probably would have cheated too at this age. And him coming clean about it is very mature. Jake is a top player and I hope he will make a come back to Tetris.
Minor correction: the PAL level record before this game was 43, not 40.
Still though, this is literally the most insane tetris accomplishment I've ever seen and I'm BEYOND lucky to have seen it live.
he didn't know
indeed
Today I discovered that Reimu is a great Tetris player :pp
WOW! This was insane to watch. Bravo man! Bravo.
Out of this world!
Congratulations!
lol that thumbnail
I never once realised that you had a previous music channel until half an hour ago, been subscribed since your second video (Tetris World Championship Explained) released.
Can't believe I never knew this.
yeah his brother is a pretty big youtuber I heard yepbear
The best classic Tetris game ever.
Not true anymore :) check out Cheez's new score WR
Not even surprised to see this happen from one of the fastest (maybe fastest) hyper tappers out there.
Holy shit dude, congrats on this epic play
Fun fact, this run wouldn't be possible on a tournament cartridge because they only generate 1,000 pieces!
They generate 1000 sets of pieces, not 1000 pieces
yea exactly
i remember saying the exact thing back in jake's fake vid
Scott Joplin in the background? Nice
Amazing video.
Nice going man. Holy moly
Whaaaaat?? You are amazing bro! Congratz!
Absolutely insane
This is like going to the new neighborhood and seeing that the fire hydrants are all yellow
Congratulations! That was epic
So after 31 years it has finally happened
But has anyone gotten a maxout on Tengen NES Tetris
The WR for Tengen is nearly 16 million points, if I understand correctly: ruclips.net/video/u18T1TDTJkc/видео.html
@@Xenophilius Wow I didn’t know
@@daxmoney5011 Yeah! The problem with Tengen is that the speed levels out before being impossible to sustain, so you can kind of just keep playing. The world record is determined by patience rather than efficiency.
This is like Bob Beamon jumping 8.90 m.
Congrats!
GG, this is insane, congrats!
What is hilarious is that with rolling, the PAL wr might overtake the NTS wr
You were correct
Just when I thought nobody could progress farther into uncharted territory in PAL NES Tetris than Jani Herlevi.
(edit: he was so close to level 31 on either version, but Joseph Saelee just had to take it)
eric this is incredible
This was wow!
My record on PAL from lvl9 was 510K
Monumental! Congratulations
Wasnt there a PAL Maxout a while before? I remember a pretty sick Video of someone going nuts on PAL lvl 19
Was it Jake's? If yes then he already claimed that he cheated on that.
@@b3neaththestarlight299 I think it could have been jake. Oh, did not know about that. Thanks! I also cant find the video anywhere.
@@b3neaththestarlight299 Oh yeah it was Jake, found the unlisted video via reddit. In the video he is just defensive about using keyboard and emulator. Is this considered cheating or did he do something else?
@@Anomaly92 I don't know exactly what I did. He just admitted he cheated a while ago.
@@Anomaly92 He used an emulator called Mesen, which has rewind/slowdown features that don't show up on history viewer (which he used to show the game).
Pretty much every PAL player knew from the beginning that it was cheated.
Yo this is insane
Why is this significant, I thought people had maxouts before
People have maxed out on the NTSC version of Nes Tetris. This the PAL version of Nes Tetris where the old world record before this game was around 824,000
Sublime!
Amazing
Can someone help me to understand the different between pal and ntsc tetris ?
The "killscreen" on PAL is level 19 (lvl 19 is the fastest speed on PAL) PAL 19 is 17% slower than NTSC 29 so the killscreen on PAL is more playable than the killscreen on NTSC
@@rvp6455 ohh yeah I know the hz or fps difference but it's also just a "other game" that's interesting thank you for taking the time and telling me it.
@@StrkezJr no problem!
Here before Jdmfx's and aGameScout's comments.
the only thing i was worried about was his fingers after a 13 min pal game
how am i supposed to get that, i mean its pal but i need that sound from the game
gg
Congrats Eric! Also Hi to twitch chat :D
GG
wtffffffffffff this is actually ridiculous whaaaaat
Ok why was it so hard to max out in PAL Tetris? But you can survive longer? I.E. Level 46 with no kill screen? Where NTSC has the kill screen at Level 29...
Because PAL lvl 19 onwards is much closer in difficulty to NTSC 29 than NTSC 19.
Absolutely insane eric
Very epic, gg!
PAL level 46...geez. I wonder when humans will start getting the glitch palettes that only TASes have seen.
edit: Nevermind, the first glitch palette is at level 138. That'd be reeeeeeally far off at this point.
Whuuut! Congrats!
Have you considered trying B-Type on PAL? AFAIK, nobody has cleared 19-3 yet, which you could do pretty easily.
1:58 nice tspin double, sending 4 lines of garbage
Well, WOW
Such a shame he had to have his hands amputated after this game.
But seriously, this is one of the greatest games of Tetris ever played.
I played rhythm games for 10 years and this is a new one to me. Well done. Most of these jokes are along the lines of sexual gratification.
Amazing!
Congratulation!
Overall highest level ever reached
Overall most lines cleared
First ever maxout in PAL
what's next? Level 50?
11:39 how do you get out of there
is the speed even increasing when reaching lvl 29 in the PAL version or is the increase so small that it's not noticeable?
no its not. its one frame per line drop for level 19 plus. and it stays like that forever. so no change in speed unlike in NTSC. because its “only” 50 hz instead of 60 its not as fast as the thrillscreen in NTSC, but still very fast. so for a piece falling from the top to the bottom in the thrillscreen a piece needs 0,33278 seconds, and for PAL 19+ it needs 0,39994 seconds. tetrissuomi.wordpress.com/english/nes-tetris-pal-or-ntsc/
@@dario-viva thank you
Yoooooooo congrats!!!!
man i was wondering who would max out pal tetris
And this is with some very avoidable misdrops, imagine him on a good day of playing
Thats insane!
Wow level 46, what the fudge!?!?!?
It was almost a 1.1m too...
wait jakes pal keyboard max was fake?
Why is PAL harder? Shouldn't it be easier because of running slower?
It runs faster, not slower. PAL 15 is 83% as fast as NTSC 18, PAL 18 is 83% as fast as NTSC 19, PAL 19 is 83% as fast as NTSC 29.
you’re not supposed to do that, eric
"maxout or I unfollow"
that was by far the coolest comment in the chat... foresight?
Better than mecex constant bs
What an achievement!
Good, but why no camera? No face or controller to see.
thank god for the maxout otherwise bunnybisbycyde would've unfollowed
What is the difference between NES and PAL?
@@007CF I'd just add that the slightly slower frame rate and faster auto shift makes the kill screen slightly easier in Pal.
@@007CF
So essentially level 19 and on is just a slightly slower killscreen on PAL
I personally think keyboard is an advantage when it comes to FlyHec, but who am I and what do I know. 😁
what is flyhec?
Level 29 feels so slow
